Hi guys, I am a new chap here and having some issues importing my media on Premier. A bit of background I am using Mac 10.7.2 and Adobe Premier 5. Shot my media on a JVC GY-HM100U and it was ingested by copying the whole folder into my computer. My video is 1080 60i the .xml file says:

dataFormat="xdvb"

videoCodec="MPEG2_VBR35M_1920_1080_60I_MP@HL" ch="STEREO_2CH"

audioCodec="LPCM16_48K"

Neither Premier nor imovie can't open the media and the error I get is that the codec is missing. I tried to convert my media using the Video Converter by iSkysoft but the quality decreased exponentially. I also tried Calibrated{Q} XD Decode, but it won't play in real time in Premier and looks choppy.

Went and downloaded the JVC HD pro clip manager but ironically it doesn't recognize the media either and the error is that is not a m4p file. JVC site and other reviews say that there is no need to wrap or transcode and the media formats are compatible with Mac which is false or I am missing something.

Does anyone have any advice how to get around this issue? Your thoughts would be highly appreciated!

Hello,

I have a Canon Vixia HF S21. When recording I use the settings 60i for the recording mode. I also have a iMac i7 core. The computer is about a couple months old so that eliminates one problem. The only way that I know how to transfer files between my canon and mac is through iMovie. (I only use iMovie for transfere and Final Cut Pro for editing) When I transfer 60i clips from the camera and use iMovie to do the transfer i select ORIGINAL FORMAT. So the clips should be 60i. And when I right click on my clip, located on the harddrive it says in the properties 29.97. Why is that? Does iMovie convert the clips or is there something wrong with my software?

Summary:

How do you guys transfer AVCHD clips from a canon HF S21 to a mac and have them in 60i, just as they were recorderd on the camera?

Thank You in advance!!!

Hi there,

Sorry to bother you all but I was wondering if anybody could help me with a couple of queries!

I have a Canon HG10 which is wonderful little camcorder which I'm told shoots in AVCHD. Now, I always thought it filmed .mov because that's what it comes up as when I upload the footage on to imovie.

I was recently helping my mother choose a camcorder and did some research as she doesn't have a Mac but a PC so I was looking for compatibility issues etc. Anyway I've found a lot of people saying that imovie'11 doesn't have support AVCHD and also found out that that is supposedly what my Canon HG10 films in.

So my question in why does my Canon work fine (and come up as .mov files) when working with imovie...yet everybody says AVCHD doesn't work with imovie?

And my second question, I may be looking to upgrade my camcorder to a mid-level Canon XA10 HD 'pro' camera, which also films in AVCHD. But I don't want to buy it and find that it won't work with imovie or other Mac editing software. (I'm learning Express and Pro but imovie is just sooooo much easier to use!).

So is there anyway I can find out once and for all, whether it will work on a Mac?

(And as a little aside: if there are so many problems with AVCHD compatibility and editing, why do so many of the camcorders these days use it?!)

Thank you in advance for your help

I've got a fairly powerful PC right now, Intel i7 2.67GHZ, Radeon HD4670 Graphics 512MB, with 2 GB Ram running 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. When I work in Sony Vegas Pro on HD Video I lock-up or crash with the BSOD. I had originally had the 64-bit version of Windows 7 with 6 GB of ram and I crashed even more often. It also seems like I have to restore to an old image every couple of months because some virus infects the PC.

Since I retired recently I no longer have to develop on Windows based machines and was considering moving to one of the all-in-one iMacs. My question is if I go this road and start editing HD video with Final Cut Pro should I then be in a blissful state of hardware stability or are you iMac users getting your share of lock-ups and crashes too. Hate to drop a couple Gs and go through a new learning curve just to have the same old problems on a new platform.

I would love to hear any and all opinions.

Hi everybody, this is my first post here, so I'm not sure if this question has been asked yet:

I recently got a new computer (Toshiba Satellite M645 (500GB of Hdrive, 4GB of RAM, Intel Core i5)) and I was thinking about buying CS5 Master edition. I'm a video student and have learned to edit on FCP 6 and 7, but our iMacs at school have CS5 on it with Premiere. Now my problem is is that my camera I use only has a 6 (or 4 don't remember) pin firewire port and my computer does not (that's really the one downside with my comp, no firewire ports whatsoever). So my plan was to capture the footage on the Premiere at school and then transfer those files to my computer that way I could edit at home. I was wondering if there would be any discrepancy between transferring files on Premiere from Mac to PC. I don't think there would be, but I would just like to be sure. I would like to know this before I put down money on Premiere and then only find out that I wouldn't be able to transfer the files.

My other option, if it is even possible, is if there is an adapter that converts firewire to USB. After searching the web, I haven't found one and don't think such a thing exists. But if anyone happens to know of such a device, please let me know. Thanks.

Okay, for all you PC based editors who are lamenting that Apple's Pro Res doesn't come in 'PC' flavor, it's no big deal. Magic Giant's 'Magic Bullet Looks' Color Grading software has been around for a good while and though you may hear some pro's bellyache about 'how it all looks the same' are correct if you only use the preset looks provided. DoP and filmmaker Phillip Bloom's recent short film was color graded on a laptop with MBL and FCP (MBL also comes in PC flavor so don't fret.) In his video he gives a demo/tutorial on how he did it and I must say he got a very impressive look by just putting some tweaks in a preset. Imagine what you could achieve if you used the software to design your own unique look! Check it out....

Hi all, I have been filming outdoor turkey hunts for a few years now and have several hunts that I am wanting to edit and make a DVD to give to friends and possibly pass out at tradeshows to hopefully "get noticed". Ultimately it would be a dream to be able to produce and sell some DVD's to help pay for my "hobby" which is hunting and filming my hunts. I have a Canon XH-A1

I am in need of some advice and guidance as I am very un-educated on the editing/production part. I am a fast learner and intuitive thinker, but this is an area that I am just about to get involved in.

I am looking at the Mac's and trying to decide on what would be a great set-up for me. I don't have to have the best of the best, but I do want to have more than what is sufficient for me to start to get involved in learning and editing and producing my videos.

I am trying to decide between a MacbookPro or the MacPro and any variations of each that would be reccomended. Info on such things as extra monitor, monitor/screen size, memory, graphics, external storage, external keyboard if I go with notebook, connections, etc. Also, I was thinking of FinalCut Express for starters unless it is recommended that I go with FinalCut Pro.

Any guidance and advice is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for helping a newbie. I am sure I will have many more questions along my journey.

I have a new flash memory HD video camera and have filled the internal memory. I've been searching for a way to archive the footage so I can go back and edit later, and allow me to empty my camera memory to shoot even more. I'm a beginner here and have a new mac, I've read on the apple forum about going into disk utility and saving it as a disk "image". The idea, I believe is to make the computer think the new image is the camera. So I did that, all 32 GB. Now when I go back in to Disk Utility I have folders of stuff I have no idea of. Clearly I am over my head. Can any of you much smarter folks give me some pointers? I do not believe that just dumping in iMovie or Final Cut is lossless.

Hi there,

I am a first time/amatuer and would like someday to go pro. My experience is only with a digital slr camera. I owned a Canon 350D DSLR and a sony Laptop running Windows Vista Business. I sometimes use Adobe Photoshop but I prefere not to "cheat/enhance" those photos. I do know that there is a huge diff between a camera and a camcorder and is willing to take up the challenge.

My friends and I (all not professional climber) attempted 6,962 m (22,841 ft) Mount Aconcagua and was documented. The documentary cost was sponsored by local TV. To make the story short, the documentary was done professionally by 2 cameraman and unfortunately we failed only 300m to the summit due to bad weather. They used 2 sony pro video camera with DV tape type which I forgot which model it was.

The group now is trying for another attempt in January 2011. Unable to secure a sponsor, our budget is kinda tight this time around that we cant afford to hire professionals to the the documentary again. Since I have a long interest with video making, I am now jumping into this oppurtunity to document the journey. I am thinking of submitting the end product to local tv or competition if it is good enough! It is about normal people trying to do the extra ordinary. We do have a list of mountains to conquer!

My budget allows me to purchase:

IMAC 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 with 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM. ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB and 1TB Serial ATA Drive.

Final Cut Studio.

Canon HF200.

My questions:

Will this be a good computer that doent take forever to render or complete my work and software for a first time documentary? I do hope to go pro in the future but I do not wish to buy another computer in the next 3 years. Yes I cant afford the macpro just yet.

Is that a good choice for a starting camera that can handle "some/little" outdoor abuse? I wish to shoot the documentary in HD and it MUST not be heavy!

Will the camera take the cold weather? My research tells me that flash memory handles cold weather better than any other type... is this correct?

Am I going the right path by choosing Mac over Windows?

My budget is REALLY tight... please advise.

Thanks in advance.

I have a jvc miniDV camcorder, and recently I have been thinking about getting into the HD craze. I have an iMac with Intel processors and Final Cut Express 4 installed, so I'm pretty sure I can edit in almost any format. I was wondering which HD format, and how it is saved, is the best (meaning looking best)? File size is not really an issue, because I have a 500GB external HDD. Is hard drive, memory stick, or tape best? What about HDV, AVCHD, or some other one?

Hello - There are so many strong supporters of macs on these forums, so I would like to know _exactly_ what they use (hardware / software) to produce their work. I have only used minor software on a pc.

I was gonna have a custom computer built for editing. But found out here in my local area, Mac is the standard everyone uses. And if it requires more, you rent it. And realized i should get a mac. I will get a nice discount due to accademic pricing on all software and computers i get. But stuck on which Mac model I should get.

I'd like to get a Mac Mini. Since I'm looking at price first. It's a desktop, but still portable if needed. But does it have the Memory, graphic and processing power to edit video with Adobe Premiere, and other Production Suite Apps? I think it does. But id like to make sure before i go out and get one.

The other option I'm looking at is a Macbook Pro. As it has the 8 gigs of memory without getting the full blown mac pro...which i do NOT have the money to get no mater how much I'd like to have it. But its a considerable price increas just to have the extra 4 gigs of memory that the Mac Mini cant have (The Macbook pro im looking at even has the same graphics card as the Mini.)

Or could i just get a plain old Macbook for full portability? does that have the power to use Production Premiere and company? Thanks to anyone who can help me

My question is in regards to publishing original videos online with clips from tv shows recorded via DVR.

Is it legal to use video acquired from a DVR system in a video of your own? (like video clips from the news or a tv show)

If so, are there regulations? ( Water mark? Not full screen, or frame the original video?)

Is youtube's policy on this congruent with the actual copyright law?

Is youtube's policy on this congruent with the actual copyright law?

This is done all the time in pop culture talk shows where they review what happened the previous night on television... is this relevant?

any thing else you think might be useful to my inquiry?

Lately in the post threads I've been getting questions concerning the benefits / drawbacks of building a custom system versus buying a pre-built system for Non-linear Editing. To keep from taking over other posts I've opened up this one to specifically address these issues. Up front I am not a computer engineer by any stretch. However, since 1998 I've upgraded and built PC's and Mac's out of 'self-defense' because either it was too expensive to send out for repair or if I didn't do it, it wouldn't have gotten done. My current depth of knowledge leans strongly toward PC because it's still 'legal' to build them on your own. However, now with the resurgence of the 'Hackintosh' I am again taking an interest in 'mac clones'. So with all that in mind please bring your questions / comments about building and upgrading pc's and mac's, but spare us the PC' vs Mac' debate.

Thanks.

I know this isn't a mac site, but I have a macbook and i just bought new hard drive I want to put in it

I also bought a hard drive enclosure http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PKC102 to put my old hard drive into basically to use it as a flash drive. HELP!

What do I have to do to get the new one to work?
Do I Just put it in and install the disks that came with the lap top and its ready to go?

(See if you can wrap your brain around this one) What if I put my new h.d. in the drive enclosure (aka flash drive), plugged it in -just as if it were any other flash drive- , drag everything onto it from my old hard drive, then just install the new H.D. into the macbook? Its probably not that easy though.

Say I take out the old hard drive, then for whatever reason I need to put it back in- will it have to be re installed or anything?

Any advice regarding this topic would be great

Thanks a bunch

Hello, I currently have a MAC and I have been making some great photo montages for friends etc and I would like to make it into a business. I have found a website that I think has some good montages on it and I'm curious if anyone is aware or could figure out what program this company uses? The website is http://www.cinemashopvideo.com. I'm also interested in any advice anyone can give me with going into this type of work? I have a couple questions on how you can make sure they can't be reproduced. Ihave also been taking a lot of photography and some classes. How can I make it so that people can't reproduce my work?

Thank you in advance!!

Hi,

I've got kind of dilemma in which direction should I go regarding my NLE system. I am producing documentaries - mainly for polish national TV. Till now I've been using Sony DVCAM camcorder and Premiere Pro CS3 with Matrox RT.X2 (also AfterEffects 7.0 and Encore) on Core2Duo based PC. I cannot say that I am satisfied with my system. It is not as stable nor perform well as I would like. I'm experiencing numerous hick-ups and performance drops as material become too complicated. Recently I've made upgrade to Premiere Pro CS4 and replaced camcorder - Sony PMWEX3 - situation become worse. I got problems with timecode, performance is even worse, moreover I cannot use full resolution that camcorder produces - 1920/1080. It is time to make serious upgrade. Here are my options:

1. Upgrade to Matrox Axio LE - regarding to Matrox reseller, that system does not require very powerful platform as it posesses quite a computational power

2. Upgrade my workstation - for example Dell Precision with Dual Quad Xeon, by professional IO card with SDI interface and switch to Avid Media Composer or EDIUS transfering all strain to PC.

3. Switch to Mac, buy AYA IO card and choose Final Cut suite.

Do you have any other suggestions? The most important thing for me is stability of production process and robustness.

I would be grateful for any ideas...

At first I was going to gloat about this, but then I thought differently:

Malicious Code Targets Macs...

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/04/22/first.mac.botnet/index.html

As much fun poking fun at my old 'macie' sparring partners would have been (and it would have), instead I took a moment to look at the 'big picture':

"...this particular Trojan hasn't yet infected any computers that do not have pirated versions of iWork on them... this is a low-level attack and many won't be affected by it. It's going to become a bigger problem and people will have to become more aware..." "I don't think it's a tipping point; I think it's an evolutionary step.
We see virus authors often use what somebody else has done," he said.
"There's a model. There's something out there to follow."

The article does discuss from the Apple's position vs the Antivirus Software co's. After reading both side's point of view the big picture issue I caught was as usual, this is all about money. If the 'panic' the Apple rep mentioned sets in (which I don't think it will just yet), then one of mac's biggest selling points (viral invincibility) will be lost and could hurt revenues. Apple does make good computer's but they are more expensive and why would now more budget conscious consumers spend more money for something that catches viruses just like cheaper pc's? On the other side, the AV software co's are (rightly or wrongly) raising the alarm and stoking the 'fires' because the fear of destructive viruses make them more money in AV product sales. A third more obscure detail occured to me with this, the hacker's profit too. As many on these forums have said, 'it's just a matter of time before the hacker's get a foothold in the mac OS. Consider 'foothold' established. Yeah, it's not enough to go running through the street gnashing teeth an pulling hair amid the smoking ruins of destroyed mac's (hang on, I'd like to enjoy that thought for a moment............), but as stated in the article 'it's an evolutionary step'. With that in mind, that means that hacker's are now paying attention to the 'obscure' mac community. Hacking is big biz and now with the pc 'front' under permanent siege, the mac 'arms race' is beginning to heat up.

What really made me pass on gloating (sigh) is the fact the 'losers' in all this are consumers. Apple typically sounds like the Mayor from the old 'JAWS' movie "This beach is safe and will stay open!", the AV software companies are drooling over their next wave of 'captive customers' (wanna' use your computer? Talk to us) and the hacker's (cyber serpents in what used to be Eden) are going to make Apple, the AV co's and themselves richer (Apple charges more for 'security'+AV co's charge for 'security software'+hacker's create negative computing environment= $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)

When I looked at things from that angle, I really didn't feel like gloating.

Also which one do you recommend me to get. All i use the computer for is to edit and watch my videos and go on internet like for yotube and other things. I am tired of having all types of error when editing.
