I say I'm a newby, but I've actually been compiling some things over the past year. I am starting a videography buisness this coming year and hope to be transitioning out of my job as a therapist sometime mid to late 2012. My question is..."I have a lot of equipment right now and know that I am either lacking, or could upgrade, in various areas. What do you think would be a good way to start spending my money in regards to equipment purchases? (ie, back-up harddrives, faster computer, better camera, etc). Here is a list of what I have so far...

Canon t2i, Sigma 28mm 1.4, Tamron 10-24mm 3.5-4.5, Neewer viewfinder, Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 monopod, a couple 16gb class 10 cards, homemade steadicam & slider, 3y/o 24in iMac, 1y/0 15in Macbook Pro (i7 dualcore w/ 8gb ram), using FCPX & Motion 5, LaCie 1TB external HD, another 500gb for Timemachine, and probably some small things I forgot to mention, but that's the big stuff.

So should I look at investing in a Drobo for storage, a Canon 5D MkII, a 8-12core Mac Pro (preowned), more memory cards, Zoom H4N, wireless lavs, etc? How do you suggest I prioritize? I will be shooting events (weddings and other events, as well as real estate property tours). Any help would be very much appreciated!

Hello,

I just bit the bullet for an Intel (Nehalem) Mac Pro and need some advice on monitors.

The Mac came with the standard DVI/mini port combo card. I need to be able to do my Final Cut and photo editing work, so here are a few questions.

1. Is one large LCD 24" monitor better than two 20"? What do you prefer and why? I am only looking at monitors that support 1080 and up, and have HDMI, VGA, and DVI conectors.

2. The Mac monitors seem too expensive for the features. What other brands work well?

3. Connections. Is a DVI connection enough? Or do I need to add a card for HDMI? And what about connecting to a regular interlaced TV/Monitor? Everyone says I need to check my work out put there too, but what do I need? Something with s-video?

Help- I am confused and am have enough on plate just learning the OS and NLE. And I am just starting out so I am not flush with cash, but will invest in worthwhile equipment.

Thanks.

Hi all,

I have had a look through some of the other posts and I am struggling to
make an informed decision about which way to go in terms of Mac Pro or Mac Book
Pro 17". I currently use PCs and regularly get frustrated by the
slow performance levels associated with Windows etc. So I am looking to
switch to Mac as I am hoping that the overall integration in terms of software
etc. is better executed.

Where I am struggling is which is going to be the better choice in terms of
hardware investment between a Mac Pro (and what level of spec to go for if this
is the best choice) and a 17" Macbook Pro.

I shoot and edit video for work to create various training and internal news
magazine type outputs.

I tend to shoot on Sony XDCAM EX in both 1080p and 720p as well as receive
mixed content from a number of sources e.g. MPEG2, MPEG MTS files in 1080 50i
as well as flash video.

Often they need to be managed on the same time line either as fully mixed
content or as nested sequences.

I have to create various animated comps to accompany voice over sequences
often made up of text, layered Photoshop images, vector graphics etc. both in
3D and 2D space with various visual effects applied. These are mainly
created in After Effects CS4.

So I was wondering which way to go in terms of Mac and which spec? I
want to move to Final Cut and make use of icolor as well as use the machine for
producing After Effects comps for use in my final edited sequences.

Also is there any specific issues that I would need to be aware of in terms
using XDCAM EX material in FCP?

do you need to retender everything as ProRes first?

and what is the time overhead like if that is a necessary part of the
workflow?

I was looking at coupling which ever is the more practical choice with a
Matrox MXO2 with Max to offload H.264 rendering as ell as providing a good
means of calibrating an external programme monitor for color grading etc.

Thanks in advance for any help or guidance provided.

I edit film with FCP and I have reached a point where I need a better computer. The Mac Pro I have now dates from 2006/2007 and is way to slow for my needs. The question now is: should I upgrade the computer I have or should I buy a new iMac or Mac Pro. I would appreciate any advice! I'm of course looking for the most cost effective solution.

This is what I have today:

Mac Pro

2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon

2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Hard-disk: 232,44 GB

I might also have to upgrade my Final Cut Pro as it is as old as the computer: FCP 5.1.4 What would you recommend here?

I need a computer to edit film (possibly HD) and also a good way to do my back-up. My internet connection isn't very fast...

Thank you in advance!

Hi all,

I am wanting to get a new mac pro in conjunction with Final Cut Studio. My question is should I wait for the 2010 model to come out or should I get their current model. If I get their current model what specs would you recommend? I shoot with an HMC 150. Thanks

Hello. I'm a tech, but primarily (by far) I work on PC's. But now I'm helping a friend buy new hardware to run FCP3. We want to make the best choices for his budget. Towards that end, I have these questions to help him determine where best to put his money now:

1) Would it be better to go to 12 GB RAM (triple channel) on a single-CPU Mac Pro, or upgrade to the Dual-CPU (8 Core) Mac Pro, adding more RAM later on?

In both cases, we won't upgrade up front to the faster CPUs Apple offers (but we could down the road).
2) How important is the video card to FCP3? I know CS4 just takes a small advantage of graphics card GPUs versus the CPU when rendering. What about FCP3? Should we stick with Apple's basic GT 120, upgrade to the offered HD 4870, or go to multiple video cards? We could just order it with the basic GT 120, and then go to third party video card(s), if that would be a significant benefit.
3) What is a realistic minimum RAM amount to get decent editing and rendering performance?
4) Any suggestions for a good RAID card rather than Apple's? We'll add at least a second hard drive for all the video data, even if we don't start with a RAID card and striped data drives. What priority would you place on a RAID set-up?
5) Any suggestions for anything I'm overlooking?

Thank you! Chuck

ok,

several times Ive rented XL2's and tried to firewire capture the footage into FCP / Mac Pro. it will be working for some time, then stop all of a sudden.

other times I get "looking for timecode"

otehr times I use ZR25MC camera - usually have pretty good luck with it a s deck but it sometimes stops in the middle of capture as well.

Ive tried "non controllable device" and some other settings but always have some problems capturing.

is it FCP or Mac pro or ME?

PS, ZR25MC has some sort of pixelation going on on the right side. Dont know if this is from taping over something else but its right through the tape. Ive tried a head cleaner but no difference. Suggestions?

I have spent most of the day and a several days last week doing research to determine which camcorder to purchase. I have just about decided on the HG10, but I would like some last minute help before making the purchase.

My main purpose is to record high school soccer games. I am a high school coach and a teacher. We review the game videos to analyze the games so I would like to have as much detail as possible. We also have a lot of requests from players for highlight videos to send to college coaches and to keep as family videos.

I also make instructional soccer videos for my players. I am not doing anything on a commercial basis, but I do like to have high quality videos. These are action videos and I usually like to break them down into slow motion and freeze some of the frames to demonstrate skills.

Most of our games are played at night. We play in stadiums and the lighting is usually good.Â

I know that this camera produces AVCHD format. I will be editing with a Mac Pro Intel Dual Processor which currently has 3G of RAM. I plan to import the video using iMovie 08 and then edit with either iMovie 08 or HD6 and then use iDVD to produce the DVD's.

I am looking for advice. Is this the best camera and is High Def the best way to go here?

Thanks for the help!Â
