Hi everyone,Â

I'm new for the forum, and new to video in general. I am, for the most part, a musician and an amateur photographer. In about a week, I'm supposed to be recording an interview and acoustic session with a local band. This will be my first "real" video session, and I'm not expecting perfection, but I'd really like it to turn out quite good, as its going to be used to promote their new album.Â

My equipment is:

Canon Eos Rebel T3 DSLR

(borrowed) Canon Rebel XTi DSLR (can't shoot video, I'll be using it for stills during the shoot)

Zoom H1 Handy Recorder

(borrowed) Zoom H4n Handy Recorder

iMac w/ iMovie

Audio interface and mics that I normally use for my music recording.

My thought was to have the T3 on a tripod facing the band and me (the interviewer), and the H1 on a boom stand above it, at least for the interview part. For the performance, I was thinking probably the same thing, except I won't be in the video then, because I'll be photographing. I should probably have the T3 on autofocus (I would think?) since I won't be behind it shooting the whole time. I may use the H4n for audio, since I could then at least have vocal mics out or something, but it may not be necessary, and I think it probably would be simpler to just use the H1 for everything, unless there's a deep need for the H4n.

Obviously my equipment isn't top of the line in any sense of the term, but I was wondering what advice you would have to make this session run as smoothly and professionally as possible. I'm going for an NPR Tiny Desk series kind of feel, if that helps at all.

Thanks!!

Alex

Justin,

I'm with Grinner on this one. If you don't have mics of your own, break out the check book and get a digital recorder like the H4n, a couple of XLR cables and patch into the audio tech's mixing board. He aught to have at least one Master Out for you to connect your recorder to and just record what he gets so you can concentrate on shooting if you're doing that as well. The H4n also works as a great stereo mic when you're not using it strictly as a recorder.

I have the Azden 105ULH system and am pleased with it. It goes for $400 and comes with a wireless lav mic (omnidirectional) & xmitter, wireless handheld mic (cardioid) and receiver. Only caveat is you can only use one mic at a time.

Justin, wireless lav mics are pretty expensive at about $500 a pop. Have you considered using shot gun mics set up on the front of the stage directed at the actors. Depending on the mixing board, you can set up 4 or more of them to get some pretty good sound. I would also suggest the you make sure they are XRL as most sound boards have XRL inputs.

Have you considered using a boom microphone?

If so, the right kind of microphone to use for this is a shotgun microphone. They can be found for as little as $100, but also remember a boom pole which I have faked by attaching a Windtech CM21 microphone clip to an extendable paint roller stick.

I work with a local improv team and tape there shows often. The group is struggling with getting a workable sound solution for when they do large venues. The team usually has 8 players per show and scene games are unpredictable so players are entering and leaving scenes often. I'm looking for something not too visible like lavs without wires thats kind of portable and could work with most mixing borders you would encounter in small theaters and clubs. If I'm wrong for thinking that route feel free to smack me around and get thinking in the right direction.

I am a complete and total newbie when it comes to this stuff and I only record the shows because I have a decent camcorder that stumbled into owning.

Thanks for reading have a great day

You'll pull audio from the house. Your camera selections are totally up to you. As you said, you'll be tweeking and matching colors in post. Pricing for this ranges from nada to seven figures. This is between you and your client. Think of your costs and time and do the math depending on your normal hourly rate.

Guys not a major concert (Want to head in that Direction) but I have been asked to video a new years event in South Beach. A portion of the block will be blocked off and I am setting three cameras to cover this events. Two are HD, one is SD. My quesiton is the following since the event will happen at night.

Best camera to use...I am considering the Panasonic AG-HPX370 mainly because I need rich colors.

and speaking of colors how to make sure that in post I can enhance what is already there. Since this is a small area I won't be using a Jib rather all cameras will be on tripods.

I also need information on the post production of this event, as the event manager wants to sell the DVD, so I am not sure on the pricing for this events So, the next question is what does a prince for such an event run?.

Thrid question is, It's live and but there will be post production work. So I need to have an idea on getting the best live audio and and sync with the video.

Currentlly I use Premiere as my editor.

So, Best Cammera so concert event...Color is very important

Pricing for such events

Best method of getting the live audio...

I can be email directly to francisco.colon@att.net

Hi Andrew, I just spent the last 20 minutes searching this forum for a post I saw recently (during the last couple of weeks) on just this subject but I can't find it. I know there are issues with the distance between the camera and the wireless receiver and also that you would need to have the wireless transmitter hard wired which might be difficult out in the field but I know there is advice from some of the more prominent and experienced regs like EarlC, Composite1 and grinner so maybe you could check out their posts and see if anything emerges. There appeared to be some issue with the signal not coping with walls as well. I guess my post doesn't help a lot. Suggest you try searching as well. I've keyed in phrases like "300 feet" (I seem to remember that was stated to be the optimum distance) but nothing came up.

Good luck

I'm offering advice on school-based broadcasting to some local schools, some elementary and some high school. For the past seven years I've had good success broadcasting over my high school's cable network using an old Panasonic MX-20 mixer and an even older Realistic sound mixer.

As an upgrade, I was sold on the Tricaster system from Newtek, but it's too pricey for the elementary school that I'm talking to. Does anyone have advice for a good basic mixer that wouldn't break the bank, but a person could buy new? If not, what's your best advice for used? I know you get what you pay for, and $5000 for a basic Tricaster is cheap for what you get (choice of output format/recording capability/chroma-key/audio mixer/all-in-one solution) but they have a budget of around $3000 for the mixer.

There aren't a lot of MX-20's around now, but WJ-MX50A' seem to be plentiful used, and can be had for under $1000. I've also been looking at Edirol systems as a 'new' option...

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi. My company had adopted an alternative to Newtek. It's called Globecaster. Really it's almost the same as Globecaster, but as a split off the original Newtek company, it was named Trinity at that time. I was one of the first in Burbank to use the now Globecaster. I use it to Live switch up to 7 camera feeds and/or roll-In video decks along with 3 down stream keyers at the same time, color correction and Titles... This thing ROCKS!

It's really solid and rarlely crashes. We stream Live events such as church services, Speakers conferences, Live High School Sporting events and Talent Shows, Weddings and Company meetings.

A little pricey at first, you might find a good deal used, but worth every penny io what it delivers.

I'm not a sales person for GlobalStreams, just a very Happy Customer-Client.

I am currently editing footage that I hope to project behind my band as live visuals. My problem is that I think once I burn a dvd and play it through the projector on a larger screen, the footage will be pixelated and stretched. Is there any plug in or software available that can convert or repair video footage so that it does not do that?

studio to video our broadcasts. We would like to use chroma key to give
us a cool studio background.

I have Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 12 and we
may have 14 around somewhere. We are using the Logitech Webcam Pro
9000 (an excellent Web cam) with good results, but I haven't a clue as
to how we can set it up for live broadcasts with chroma key. Our
computers are PC's with Vista and one with MS 7.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

This is how I webcast successfully on a PC :

Canon XH A1s (in SD 4;3 mode)
PC with Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit OS) and quad core processor (takes a lot of ressources to webcast)
Adobe Flash Media Encoder 3.0 (free download)
Adobe Flash Player - latest version (free download)
Ustream.tv account and creation of webcasting event (with the provided embedded code you rebroadcast live on any url)

Of course you need a good wifi or wire internet connection with a min of 300kbps upload

I don't know how to add graphics using Ustream.tv but a quick search should help you

The workflow is a bit tricky but I can give more info if interested...

Gerald,

You get around the 'lack of control' by shooting as many dress rehearsals as you can. You also use dress rehearsals to get those close-ups your clients desire because camera set-ups are infinitely easier without the audience present. If you notice, in Ian's piece there are slight variations in exposure between the main shot and the different cut shots. Since live performances aren't exactly the same each time there will be differences in performance, where the light hits the talent and a host of other stuff. So it'll never be perfect, but you can narrow down those variables considerably by shooting the dress rehearsals. It's more work, but it justifies itself when it comes time to get busy in the editing bay.

The videographer has nailed the exposure and composition. You normally can't control it as well as it is controlled here. I shoot a lot of live theatre. I think this is excellent but most of my clients require more close ups. Gerry in Calgary

Not long ago a member was looking for info on how to shoot a live theatrical performance. He got some really good advice, but sometimes it's just better to 'see' how something should look than to just read about it.

Here's a video by Ian Lucero discussing how he shot a live dance performance. He gives some good tips on what to do to round out your shot list so you'll have plenty to work with during post.
