I hardly use lights as I believe they are intrusive to the wedding and the atmosphere is changed. To compensate the lack of light I use fast lenses such as 1.8 F or a DSLR with good low light capability such Canon 5D MK2 or Sony NEX5N.

I saw a review of a light that was a modular 3 piece I think it was LED light that was super powerful, and since it was modular you could pull each ring apart and have 3 lights from it. I'm having a heck of a time finding that product again, forgot to bookmark it. :-(

Anybody remember seeing that review or know of the product?

I prefer not to use video light during a wedding but will always choose to do so if the light is poor. The LED light on the top of my camera is adjustable and so I don't have to make everyone look like frightened rabbits!! You also get much better colours in the final wedding video and the wedding photographer often appreciates the extra light. So I would always advise to use when needed.

My LED light goes on top of my camera from the beginning of the day - I am never without it just in case I end up in a situation with bad light. The thing with weddings is that you are dealing with constantly changing levels of light as you move through various rooms and locations over the day. So I would never be without it!!

Good points vid-e-o-man. At my last wedding shoot, moments before the "grandparents" dance, the DJ shut down all the lights except the "mirror ball" and I didn't have my camera lights handy... ruined the whole dance. Live-and-learn.

If all else fails,I have had some success, with the brides OK, getting some of the house lights back on for a short time: during special dances, bouquet toss, garter, etc. This, I think, will help the photographer focus. At least thats what I suggest.

Wow, great responses (and so quickly). I've done lots of corporate videos where lighting is a given... and now that I've jumped on the wedding wagon, I will need to (quickly) learn the secrets of good videos in dim lighting. I can't see dragging in lots of lights to accomidate every scenerio, but having good lighting on the camera seems like a "must have". For weddings, I use 3 cameras and that would give me 3 light set-ups. I'm hoping that would be sufficient (sounds like it should work fine). Thanks guys.

I ALMOST ALWAYS ASL but also have them attached and ready to use in emergencies. Regardless of what people in or out of the industry say, what manufacturers claim or otherwise, VIDEO IS LIGHT, LIGHT IS VIDEO, and you will NOT get the same quality color and image results in poorly lighted venues without some kind of lighting, used appropriately. THAT BEING SAID ...

... another thing I do is turn on the light with it and the camera facing the floor or ceiling, THEN when the people I throw it on notice it's coming I bring it into play. I use toughspun in front of the light if it needs, or use a dispersal filter if such a thing is available for the model lights I happen to be using. I DON'T use Kleigs or some other Super Nova lamp system ;-(

I also use small, LED units with disposable batteries to place inconspicuously around the head table, etc. that are rather unobtrusive and yield just enough glow that I get good results, same thing for audio backup, using my arsenal of Zoom H2 standalone recorders for sound.

I HAVE set up and used 1,800 watts worth of NRG studio lighting around the dance floor. Reaction is a mixed bag, but if I have hassles it's usually from the DJ who complains that My lights are having an adverse effect on HIS light show ... most of them are compliant enough that a compromise is possible, say for the main dances, but not after the party dancing starts.

Until there's an affordable camera that tests out to produce the SAME image quality, clarity and coloration with or without available or added lighting, I will bring and use them when they are necessary to produce a quality production. I HAVE had clients tell me NO LIGHTS and I add a line to the production agreement so stating, warning of the loss of quality, emphatically stating that NO CAMERA on the market can match one that USES lighting properly, and they sign off on any resulting liability due to perceived lack of quality based on their demand to NOT use any lighting at all.

Their call.

I always ask, and I always am told to go ahead. BUT asking is better
than "pissing" them off if you don't know. I have the SWAT set from
flo-lights and a couple others that go on for at least the spotlight
dances (and sometimes needed for toasts). Then I use a single camera light once the dance starts to get the rest of that footage.

I've only done a few weddings so far, and after every shoot, I ask the folks if they thought camera lights (during the dark scenes) would be distractive.... and they have all said they would rather have the lights to get a good video than no lights. What is the opinion of other wedding videographers -- camera lights on or off??

A small camera light (or basic lighting kit) to start off. Time and again I've thought about building my own out of LEDs, but then realized the better option may just be to purchase a set of quartz lights or LED mountable camera light.

I've bought a number of support items including a new laptop, a new monitor for the NLE, lights, portable studio items and a Sony clamshell. The last items I've ordered for now are a long overdue Blackmagic capture card and some HDMI cables (definitely not Monster!)

On the 'pending list' are items to assist with adding full tapeless acquisition to my existing tape based cams and and upgrades for CS5 Master Collection, Vegas 9 and Sound Forge 10.

On the 'wish list' is a couple of Zoom H4n's and one or two DSLR's. Despite the impressive low light capability of the D3, overall I'm sold on the Canon line. Right now I'm torn on whether to get a 7D or a 5DmkII. I ruled out the 1Dmk IV after seeing it in 'The Great Shootout' and though it's very good, I wasn't impressed enough to want to pay $5k just for 1 body.

I'm seriously leaning towards the 7D as it can shoot in 720p which can work with my GY200UB. But I really like the overall imagery the 5D and firmware controls that come out regularly. Unfortunately, going to DSLR will mean a whole new set of support gear to make a usable kit which means more money!

I'm gonna try not to aquire more overhead this year. My camera can't last much longer, I'm sure so a RED Scarlet may be in my near future. Same with the Avid. I'll milk it till it croaks then move on to a nice FCP suite.

I do want a wide angle lans adapter for the FX1 soon. The one I want is just a few hundred bucks so I may do that. There are some plgins I'd love to have right now but I don't have immediate demand to warrent spending money on something I'm looking forward to bidding farewell. I'll beef up the FCP sute to the max when I make the change.

This could fall in any one of a number of other topic titles, and certainly might become more of a "Making Losses" instead of "Making Profit" but I'm gonna put my wish/shopping list for 2010 up here. Some, if not all of it will be purchased by Dec. 31, and hopefully the remainder in 1st quarter 2011. At the current level of production work I'm getting, and have booked over the next several months, it is not ALL wishful thinking.

Two JVC GY-HM100 HD camcorders

Two Litepanels MicroPro units

Two Sennheiser MKE 400 and/or MKH 416-Pr8U3

Two Sennheiser wireless units in the 3000/5000 model series

One Manfrotto 468MGRC3 Head w/ 190XPROB sticks

One Disc Makers 15-unit portable CD/DVD burning rack

One of the BRAVO disk printing systems ??? or suitable heavy duty alternative for in-house printing

Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it (or most of it, well some of it, then again...)

Anyone else care to share, or debate or willing to volunteer donations to help make my wishes come true ;-)

Sorry about the poll, wanted to have one for tripods/heads/support, one for "other" and one for none, but settled for NOPE.

I'm looking for the best bang for my buck on an on-camera light. Use the Panasonic HMC150 for non studio interviews and seminar stuff.

Sometimes, the best option for attaining good brightness is to allow your mind to settle with the simple, usually-trusted Auto-gain. Personally, I'd set the Gain to automatic and turn on manual Exposure, which will allow you to have some control over the brightness. The camcorder will tend to keep the scene adequately (and evenly) lit. Manual exposure should only be used if there's a particular scene with too many bright colors or whites that are blowing out of the screen.

Hi Dave,

I sometimes shoot hockey with JVC HD7's and I have noticed that using an aperture priority semi-auto setting is best. For arenas that don't regularly televise games, you run into a mix of lights. (fluorescent, sodium, halogen) I set my zebra to 100% and sometimes white balance against the boards. Your footage looks like the camera is reacting to a different TYPE of light reflecting off the ice as you zoom. Hope this helps.

I am shooting all types of HD film and docs in and outdoor. I need a lighting kit/system. I love the Litepanels 1x1 LED lights but they are VERY expensive. Westcott softboxes with TD5 fluorescents lighst are more affordable.

Any recommendations?

First post in this forum, thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I searched all over this BB with no luck getting the specific information I'm seeking.

I use a Sony HDR FX1 camcorder to shoot HD footage inside hockey arenas. Primarily, I am up in the stands, away from the ice surface.

For some reason I keep getting large fluctuations in the lighting and I believe it has something to do with the florescent lights used in the arenas. There also seems to be a correlation between the amount of zoom and the light level fluctuations. When I zoom in the picture seems to brighten up.

Here http://vimeo.com/8507644 is a link to a video I shot last week. There are examples throughout but you can see them easily around 1:28, 1:43 and 1:58.

I shoot the video in manual setting levels. Typically the settings will be as follows: shutter speed 125, gain 3db, iris is around 2.8 to 3.4 (depending on the zebra exposure), zebra is set at 95, white balance is set to indoor and calibrated using a "Shooters Blues" card (blue side). Focus will usually be set to automatic, but I will sometimes set it to infinite if the subject is far enough away.

By way of setup, I will calibrate the white balance at the arena, turn the iris dial until the zebra starts showing up and the shoot away. I have no idea if that makes sense but that's my process.

I edit using Pinnacle Studio 14 Ultimate, typically utilizing the auto color correction feature. I will also try to use the white balance feature if things are too dull. The light level changes are prevalent before and after post production, in case you are wondering.

If anyone has any ideas on how to eliminate the light level changes or
thoughts on achieving proper color balance etc. I'm all ears. Thanks in advance.

Here's a little tip for people sitting next to each other. Put one light behind person 1 so it acts as a fill for them and a key light for person 2. do the same for the other person. You can also use one more light behind the actors for the back light. (wide enough for both of the actors) I hope that makes sense and can help you out.
