i'm in the same boat as OP.. I can get a Samson UHF Series 1 and a MR7 for about $100 anyone familiar with these? Are they good? Any other current models that folks suggest for 2 affordable lav-capable mics?

Roblewis56, you're link didn't go through.. at least I didn't see it.

I totally agree with Roblewis56, use mine ($34.95) all the time, and I also have the option to use handheld which in your case might not detract from the neighborhood interviews segment of your project. I do have a UHF wireless system by Sony (UWP V6, about $900) built like a tank and very, VERY dependable. But that's not where you have to go for decent narrative audio.

You are recording voice, not music, so you don't need the wide frequency response you would need for music. So I suggest a RadioShack Tie-Clip Microphone. Should be about $30. with 4ft cord. You can get a 16ft extension. I use this mic for doing voice over.

A lavaliere Mic system is pricey, two of them very pricey. One way to lessen the cost is by visiting your local Music Store. The folks that sell Drum Kits, Guitars and many other Musical Instruments are audio experts. They can help you and odds on they will have a rental system you could take advantage of. Spending $1400 on 2 wireless sets is big for 3 shooting days, where 25 dollars a day time two setsis about $600. Do it on a weekend, they might charge you only for one day, out Saturday Morning, back Monday Morning. See if they have used equipment for sale, they may surprise you.

BOB FLEISHMAN sez:

" I am beginning my first documentary about the life and times in my old neighborhood, and I would like to interview some of the people that I grew up with.

Of course, I could use the built-in microphone on my camcorder, but I would like to use a lavalier microphone as I believe I would get a better audio result. "

No doubt you would! Have you paid attention to the miniature lavalier mics worn by all on-camera newsfolk? Really, that's just about all you need to know . . . unless you ARE planning on purchasing a wireless system as Pseudosafari assumes. Hard-wired lavs are, as one might suspect, significantly cheaper than a wireless, and could possibly work out well for you . . . unless you're planning on some medium-distance or full-figure shots while the subject is walking around.

If you are planning on future productions, then you should plan on buying the very best you can afford so that you won't have to upgrade any time soon. A good hard-wired lav can be found for around $ 100; a good wireless system can be found for $ 400 to $ 700.

As a videographer, you'll most likely be looking at new camera gear in the future, and that's where you should spend your money.

this forum is a great resource to start with. search past entries on here, too. read and compare catalog descriptions and specs on sites like B&H Video (and even call them, they're pretty good) and then search for reviews on Youtube. that's what i did before buying and i am generally happy with how it worked out.

for lavs, VHF is cheaper than UHF but since it offers fewer channels you sometimes get more interference. i have a vhf set from azden though and it works fine for me. you can use different mics, too, not just a lav (I plug a boom into it sometimes and a regular looking mic for those man on the street interviews and it works just fine). i'm rural, so not much interference. if you're in a city, UHF might be more important.

BandH has a little bit of everything. It's been a long time but seems like I paid less than 400 bucks for mine there. Its single. I'm about to get a dslr and will be setting it up much like this:

that's the basic studio set up but I'm going with this duel xlr input box:

Pretty much spot on but with shorter cables and just one shot gun and a lav. Light, tight, all inclusive... add a lil dimmable led and I probably won't even tote a different lens when handheld. I've always liked to be mobile with everything I need on me and this little combo will let me do that as I transfer into a dslr work flow.

I am in the market for a new Lavalier system too with more than one mic hook up.

I purchased an inexpensive unit on Ebay for a shoot and it worked just fine EXCEPT if you had any flourescent lights on over head! Then you got a terrible hum on the audio track. I learned a tough lesson, check your audo track before you shoot a scene. I had to do the shoot over again because I did not test before I started filming.

It is my understanding that the UHF systems are not as sensitve to flourecent hum. There are a number of different UHF systems for sale on EBay but I have not been able to find any reviews except on Amazon.com

This is just thought, but if you're planning on taking actual film courses in college, you might wanna think about getting a dslr. Since it's the closest thing in technique to shooting on film, it would give you a head start on becoming comfortable with lenses, exposure, pulling focus, etc. Kind of a "two birds with one stone" type of thing. Sure, most only record 10 minute clips, as far as filming your trip is concerned, but all you have to do is stop recording and start again (only miss a couple seconds). A camcorder, like the one meantioned above, would be the easiest to handle on the trip and give you really good results (easily), I just thought the dslr might be something to consider for a future film maker. Since it's closer to what you'll be using in film school.

I have a Canon Vixia HF S200 and for the money I don't think you can beat it. Videomaker did a review on the S21, S20 and S200 if you want to check it out. For the camera and a few accesories you'll come in under $1,000. It's small which makes it easier to take travelling. It also has a lot of manual features so you can play around and get the settings you like.

For a vacation though, I would remind you this uses SDHC cards and unless you have a way to dump the files off to reuse them, or you take plenty with you, you may find yourself running short of storage space. I use Transcend 16gb class 10 cards with mine and they run about $30 on Amazon if I remember correctly. You can get 32gb cards as well. If you plan to take a laptop then you storage issue is no problem.

Alternately, you can choose to use a lower bit rate file but won't get the best image possible.

And it also takes some pretty good stills, actually.

I've been editing on a small scale for a couple years now and on final cut express for about a year but next year I will be a senior in high school and will be doing an independent film course and I am probably going into film in college so I need a good camera. I will be going to italy in two weeks with a leadership group and I have been asked to make a film recording the trip and the work put into it but I need to get a good camera preferably under $1000 which I know is ridiculous but I figure y'all know what is best and can help me

I'm not sure what your budget, application or project needs consist of, but a small mixer allows dual sterio inputs without have two mono voices coming out of different speakers. I have a Shure mixer (older than this model) that allows voice over control. Just a FYI. This model sells for aprox. $220.00.

Hi,

I realize that this topic is probably super obvious and answered elsewhere but I'm selfish and needy

=-).

We run (right now) a single HF 200 and have been using a shotgun mic in our how-to videos. The problem we run into is that the shotgun is great for stand ups, awful when we are looking away from the camera (we shoot how-to videos on car restoration and are thus in places that a boom is impractical. A lavalier/lapel mic seems to be the next best solution.

With the background out of the way, how would I easily and CHEAPLY (we have yet to show a profit in our venture and money is as tight as a pair of pants on Britney Spears) get two lavaliers to work on our one HF200 (we often have two people working and are often off site with limited help: see Britney Spears above)?

The kit posted above is not a complete solution. The receiver mounts into other devices, which are extra.

Try Sennheiser, it falls into your budget and works great.

You should definitely get a lot of power in durability and quality with a $550 lavalier system. Surprisingly, I haven't found any reviews on the lavalier version of this sytem - just some specs.

Does anyone have any info regarding the Sony UWPX 7/3032 wireless lavalier system... There is a great deal on a used one, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice pertaining to this Mic system.

Also it doesn't seem to be camera mountable, is that something a wedding Vid must have, or is it okay to attach it via a belt clip??? Thanks guys!!!!

"NADY is a low-priced, entry-level system that can do the job, but believe me you WILL experience heart break sooner rather than later, and it WILL crap out on you More than less, compared to the better quality instruments available. It is seriously SUB 'entry level' and certainly far from 'pro.'"

The sound produced by the NADY DKW-Duo set performed fairly well and works great for the price. One complaint I've heard from a musician practicing is the receiver unit getting fried on extended use after multiple practices. It was literally pouring out smoke, though I don't know how long and how well he used it.

Sorry Rocky...I am totally NOT familiar with that unit, but I have to say that over the years the Fender name meant and still does QUALITY as far as I know. Though guitars are the company's specialty and their mic systems are likely either focused on instrument/vocal performance - and probably built by another company, then branded Fender - I would not be averse to taking a chance on a Fender product. You might find a Guitar Center or other BIG ROOF music center near you where it could be possible to get a demo of this unit. Or check NewEgg's return policy and if it don't work as you'd like...

Hey, what do you know about the Fender passport uhf-exec-sys passport wireless executive system. the only reason I ask about this specific mic is becasue it is offered at newgg.com which I have an account and I'm having trouble getting financing anywhere else. This seem to be the best mic system newegg offered. I can't find many reviews on it, or anything so I thought I ask here?
