Jesse,

On the one hand, you're in the place where industry is most predominant so that's an edge. Really, it's all about you continuing to do the work and making connections in the industry where you are. The disadvantage you face is there are truckloads of experienced editors already trolling about for the limited gigs and there's a tidal wave of fresh out of school grads and people looking to do what you do coming from other industries. It's all going to boil down to you having current work to show, networking as best you can, going to expos and the like to meet and greet with others in the biz and teaming up with up and coming indie projects. The result will be your name and work being on people's minds which when an opportunity presents itself, you'll be ready to take advantage of it. That isn't the traditional way of doing things (go to school, pound the pavement, get a job) because for now those days are over.

Main thing is to not lose heart if you truly want to stay and succeed in this industry. It's nothing against you per se. It's just the times we live in. The shark tank just got bigger to accommodate more people is all. You'll just have to swim harder and perhaps longer to get out. So in the meantime, do what you gotta' do to maintain and keep your skills sharp and your eyes peeled!

jesse1469, as usual EarlC has shared lots of great info that should be very helpful to you or anyone else in the same position. The only thing that I can add is in reference to your video. Great job demonstrating your skills. The only thing that I might suggest is to hold on the contact information at the end for a little longer time making it easier for someone that is watching it to be able to write it down. This doesn't seem like too much to ask of a prospective employer but if they get bunches of videos to review anything that causes them extra time or effort might be just enough to toss yours. This will make it as easy as possible for your prospective employer. Good luck and keep trying.

The success stories I've read and heard of guys getting a break nearly always seem to be connected to extreme perseverance — where they continuously hone and polish their reel until it slaps people in the face. It is daunting, to say the least, seeing some of what is being done in the "I want to get my foot in the door" arena, and it is tough to generate a reel that will float to the top with all the competition, especially anywhere near the West Coast and L.A. area. However, shear perseverance ... sending out that demo reel that you're constantly honing and polishing, tightening and making pop, adding new and better stuff as you can acquire it, is what's going to make it happen. That and even MORE patience than you've already exhibited.

Another way, of course is to keep uploading your stuff, new and improved, on YouTube and sending those links out; setting up a connection on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and other sites where you can also hammer on your demo reel's existence and links, and update continuously when you have something new and improved. Join all the forums you can and showcase your work and your qualifications (and experience when and where you can get it) — especially LAFCPUG and similar sites where people like you are congregating and sharing information and comments.

Then take whatever days you can, and armload of demo reel DVDs, make a plan to hit as many places you can find in L.A. and wherever else you wish to try, hit their doors, ignore the front guard (receptionists) if you can and insist that you'll wait until they close and lock the doors if SOMEBODY in a position to make a decision to give you a chance will only give you five minutes of their time ... or less.

Be bold, be aggressive, be polite but insistent. When you get an audience don't hesitate, stammer or look at the floor or wring your hands or genuflect USE DIRECT EYE CONTACT AND HOLD IT. But by the same token don't over act your confidence or come off cocky or haughty unless of course you have every reason to believe you're the next GREAT EDITOR and have the demo to prove it.

Then explain that you KNOW for a fact most of these houses have need for "ground floor" interns and you also know that there are labor laws and other legal considerations that may or may not make it THAT easy for them to accommodate someone like you who is willing to be there for as long as it takes. But assure them that you WANT a chance and if the only way to get one is to start out gofering and pouring coffee for some jerk (well, don't actually USE that term) head honcho, then you're their person.

Whatever it takes, then do it again until you find a door with a crack in it big enough for you to crawl through, then stick like Gorilla Glue until they let you sit behind an editing system and show them something.

This would be MY approach.

You could also appeal to the HUGE number of independent professional video services providers all over the West Coast who are focused specifically on weddings, and others who focus on events, performances, small business and commercial productions, and offer them your internship proposition. A lot of these guys and gals might be a bit more approachable and give you some editing time that, while it isn't in the entertainment or high end commercial industry, still provides you with additional experience, honed skills, material to improve your demo reel (get their permission and make that part of your "working a free internship" proposal of course) and possible connections with others who might know somebody who knows somebody ... if you know what I mean.

Hi everyone,

I have been looking
for a position as an intern or editor’s assistant in Los Angeles for about 3
years now, since I graduated from college with a degree in Media Arts, and I’m
starting to run out of ideas and become frustrated as to why nobody will hire
me. As far as experience goes, I have worked
at two tv stations and on the behind the scenes featurette of a large scale
film. I know Final Cut, Premiere, After
Effects and Photoshop, and spent about 2k this year taking an AVID course and
getting an AVID technical certification. I have a subscription to
Media-match.com and get job alerts sent to my email. I’ve been applying to
about 15 online jobs a week but I never get any responses. Lately I have been
calling post-houses off LA411.com and cold calling for basic internships in order to
learn a little more and just get my foot in so I can start on the ground floor
of a company and grow with the position. I have offered to work for free for a trial
period at all the places I’ve called…After about 2 months, I’ve had one
interview but no call back, and most of the people I talk to seem to just be either
incredibly flaky, or just giving me the run around. I also have a demo reel.... http://www.vimeo.com/17581129, but
after all the positions I’ve applied to it only has 8 views?

Is there something I am doing wrong or missing?

How am I supposed to break into this industry if I don’t
know anybody and nobody will take a chance on me?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Not all wedding video producers are "desperate wedding videographer(s)" as there are many who may be placed in a more tenable category than perennially acerbic zoobie tends to imply. I really do not understand zoobie's tendency to almost always use negative-sounding responses in most post replies on the Videomaker forums.

Many in the video production field elect to focus entirely on offering editing services, making this their business model rather than opting for being all things (like me) and including shooting, editing and producing video. There are plenty of non-desperate professionals who prefer to shoot only, edit only, or even produce/package with quality graphic design and mass production capabilities in limited quantities more affordable and practical to independent video services providers opting for sub-contract arrangements.

It is a personal insult, as well as industry-wide insult, to lump people open to offering editing and other specific services into a "desperate wedding videographer" category when many have developed a solid business model that incorporates wedding and event video production alongside a valid duplication, editing or other side to their business.

While this does not address your desires and needs by specifically offering contacts with whom you can negotiate services, I felt a need to point out that desperation isn't a significant factor in finding them. And, while I personally do not focus on Craig's List or other similar forums for acquiring the business I pursue, I realize that in spite of the "desperation" factor many postings there and on the Knot and other places would tend to imply, not all are such.

Use some respect, zoobie, when referring to people in the video industry who maybe do not always climb to the heights to which you aspire, or belong in an elite category in which perhaps you have placed yourself in a moment of misguided narcissism.

Subcontracting out is an option but if someone is going to put their name on it and their reputation behind it, I would think they would at least want to record it themselves - If there is a problem with the editing, you could throw it out and start over with someone else - At least you are guaranteeing the source material.

I think a bit of both. I just moved to AVCHD but looks like I have more or less figured out that part. I was just hoping to get out more and run after business than sit in front of the computer you know. But i would still buy that Upshift, so thanks for that.

I think you just want them converted. Editing would be a final production. Like birdcat said, just find a way to convert them to a more manageable format and use a free/older version editor.

But if you actually wanted them edited into a final production, I'm sure there are tons of desperado wedding videographers out there getting ready to go out of biz that will take your money....with relish.

Just a suggestion.

I don't know if you just don't want to do the editing yourself or if you are having problems editing AVCHD.

If it's the latter, there are products (I use Upshift from VASST/New Blue FX - something like $40) that will convert MTS files to lightly compressed M2T files, so your editor can use them without lag.

Hi

I am a wedding videographer based out of NJ and need to get my videos edited.

I shoot in 1080iHD and can send the footage in memory cards. You would need to edit them and send them back to me on a dvd and the same card.

My format is AVCHD. You will need the latest version software that supports AVCHD
( cs4, vegas 9, pinnacle 12 etc)

Please reply with your hardware / software setup, rate and if possible links to your work.

Thanks

Though you can use copyrighted materials according to the 'Fair Use' laws, if you're not going to take the steps in order to get permission (sometimes all you have to do is ask), then it's best to steer clear of copyrighted material.

An example (though not music related): On our first feature film, we went through with a fine-toothed comb to make sure we either owned or had permission to use elements in our flick. After final cut was completed and the film was shown, I realized that in one scene a church we had in the background had no documentation for permission. Having the church in the background was critical to the scene and our options were to either do an expensive 'paint out' in post or cut the scene (which would have killed the film outright.) I personally contacted the Monsignior of the iconic church (which by the way was copyrighted by them) to get permission. I sent him a tape of the film so he and the church board could approve it. Fortunately, they loved the movie and despite their disapproval of harsh language used in the scene, they completely understood the context and gave their approval. Bottom line; don't put yourself in that position. We dodged a major bullet.

In your case, there's metric buttloads of royalty free music out there either already created or in the form of loops so you can make your own. The music and music creation software is worth the investment and will keep you out of trouble.

Thanks for the link, Coreece! I decided I probably won't use this as a demo.

In my opinion, a demo reel is making money anyway. You are trying to get a potential employer to hire you, therefore, you are making money if they do hire you after seeing the demo reel.

I work for a non-profit, so we figured we are free to use copyrighted music in our Fire safety puppet shows (educational use, etc.). Now, I'm making a highlight video to both thank last year's sponsors, and rope in new ones for this year. The music in the shows (which means it's in the video too) include "Bye, Bye, Bye" by N'Sync(?) and "Who Let the Dogs Out?" QUESTION: Can I use this highlight video as a demo reel for future jobs? NOTE: I'll be studying this on my own too.

It is my understanding that regardless of who you work for (or who is using it), copyrighted music is not allowed to be used without purhasing rghts or acquiring permission from all the different rights holders (who wrote it, who performed it, who recorded it, who published it, who distributed it, etc...).

The DMCA is very specific about who can use what and where - Major exceptions are parody and fair use (like news organizations or schools using short clips for illustrative purposes).

It makes no difference if you are not going to be making money from it. To use a copyrighted piece of music you need to get synchonization rights, performance rights, reproduction rights, distribution rights, etc...

Also realize that while most folks are not going to be targeted but the DMCA has very sharp teeth and if you own anything or ever hope to, it is best to stay on the legal side of that line.

Just MHO - I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV - Please consult with legal counsel before making any decisions in this area.

QUESTION: Can I use this highlight video as a demo reel for future jobs?Â

I don't see why not. It's not like you are selling your demo reel for profit or broadcasting it. I've seen copyrighted music in demo reels before, but obviously you can't tell if they got the rights or not just by looking at it. But my assumption would be that using copyrighted music for demo reels wouldn't be done as often if you had to get the rights. So I wouldn't sweat it. Go for it, bro.

I work for a non-profit, so we figured we are free to use copyrighted music in our Fire safety puppet shows (educational use, etc.).

Now, I'm making a highlight video to both thank last year's sponsors, and rope in new ones for this year. The music in the shows (which means it's in the video too) include "Bye, Bye, Bye" by N'Sync(?) and "Who Let the Dogs Out?"

QUESTION: Can I use this highlight video as a demo reel for future jobs?

NOTE: I'll be studying this on my own too.

I am in the process of building a network of people creating videos for the tourism industry, so they can finance their passion for film and travel. I'm also hoping as more people do this it will eventually become the standard for tourism companies in the same way websites have become the norm, and that means income for people like us, who love travel and film.Â

That's why I wrote a manual so people can become familiar with tourism marketing and producing effective promotional holiday videos that sell more holidays, and all of the elements and the structure of promo videos.

After reading the manual you may then want to create a couple of videos using local operators and accommodations and once you have a couple of sample videos and a showreel for tourism we may then list you on our database for tourism companies and will endeavor to send some work your way or you can start contacting tourism companies yourself  as I have also included a section on how to sell to companies and a list of contacts for interested companies.

Please have a look at http://www.filmingholidays.com for more information and let me know what your thoughts are.

thanks

After Effects will definitely be a requirement and probably other tools as well. You are talking about some very expensive software and needing a lot of training. Check out Lynda.com for tutorials on After Effects and other professional software. Try to find a job as an intern at a local cable or TV station.

Hi chuckengels. Â I am not quite sure what the specific job title is but it would involve editing, FX and some creativity regarding videos for music festivals, concerts or entertainment. Any ideas? Â Thanks Again.

The Video and Film industry, like anything else, has very specialized fields. Do you have any idea of what you would like to do in the industry, what you would like to specialize in? There may be other tools or things to learn depending on your plan, like After Effects or other animation and effects tools.

If you are hoping to work as a professional someday, then I would suggest that you try to learn ProTools (audio) and one of the major video editors (Avid, Vegas, Premier Pro, or Final Cut.) You can never go wrong if you know how to use all of these. Hope this helps.
