Might be the speed of your hard drive. R U using ONLY your internal, OS and programs hard drive to capture to? Is it slower than 7200 rpm? Do you have an external, Firewire, 7200 rpm HD you could utilize. Even though your laptop might be powerful enough for basic editing, your hard drive might be the choking point. There are other issues and I'm not at all familiar with your computer but it would seem that trying to use the same hard drive, especially with Premiere 5.5 still might be asking too much of the system in trying to ingest.

Hi to the folks out there,

I've recently bought a HP Pro book 6560b primarily as it still has a
firewire port so I can still transfer video from my Legria HV40. I have
installed Premiere 5.5. but when I try to capture the video I get jerky
pictures with a frame or so 'sticking'. This seems to happen in
conjunction with a sound like a burrrp/buzz. This noise is very evident
when playing a Youtube video and am wondering whether it's interfering
with something else/program I'm not aware of?

I have changed the firewire driver to the 'OHCI compliant host
controller (Legacy) as suggested on another site, rolled back the audio
driver 'IDT high definition codec' to a previous version all to no
avail.

I've used HDVsplit to transfer the video and it still happens though not
as badly as with Premiere, which makes me think it's something else on
the laptop?

I'm sure it's NOT my camera as I can capture video to my desktop that
runs XP. In anticipation of the next question "why don't I capture using
my desktop PC and then transfer the footage to my laptop?" Answer -
It's at home and I work abroad hence I have the laptop to save space.

The video runs smooth as silk via the camera viewfinder. Any ideas, suggestions, solutions will be most gratefully received.

I'm running windows 7 professional, 64bit with SP1 on a HP Probook
6560b, Intel (R) Core TM i5 2410M CPU@2.30GHz 2.3GHz with 4gigs of RAM.

Thanks in anticipation

You are not the only one. When you mention this to people the typical response is rolling shutter, jello and a variety of other terms. The fact is, if you Google this, so many people are having this issue with Canon DSLR's. Even with a Class 10 card this situation can still occur and I'm not so convinced it's the card. The problem is, as soon as you pan or tilt with any motion, you will get that jerk and again it's not rolling shutter, it's not jello, it's not shutter speed. what you are seeing 90% on the web are non moving shots with DSLR's. Then you get people stating, that jerk is 24 frames per second, it's the "film look" and I disagree with that also, that's not what it is. I'm convince it's a problem with many of the Canon DSLR's. And then you'll get, it's your "settings" and it's not that either, neither the editing settings or the menu settings in the camera. I am convinced it is the processor in many of the Canon DSLR cameras

I had a similar problem with the jerkiness in the footage. I didn't notice it until I had made a render and thought it was something in Vegas.

I went back to the original footage right off the card and the problem was still there.

It's the card. Sometimes even a class 6 isn't up to the task, but it is very rare.

Here's the clip in question:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvMhUWYj9Rs

Note when the girl raises her hand to move her hair around the 4 second mark and see if that's the same thing you had happen.

It was a one time thing for me, and I haven't had it happen since, but I'm always watching for it.

Just for the record, I'm shooting with a T2i as well and editing in Vegas Platinum 9

I am not familiar with the camcorder or software you are using, but, in general terms, dropped frames are caused in the 'capturing' process, because a camcorder transferring material at a fixed-speed, tends to outrun the capacity of a computer without the 'fire-power' to keep-up with the demands being placed upon it. The computer, under those circumstances, has to resort to dropping-frames to 'keep-up-with-the-play', which is about the only thing it can do.

Another cause of jerky and dropped frames in my experience, is using a camcorder which multiplexes audio and video into a single stream, under conditions of high wind-pressures and extreme gusts. I once went to an extremely exposed coastal position locally, to try and film the shapes of sandhills being re-shaped by a gale with gusts to more than 125km/H. To give an indication, sudden changes in pressure were sufficient to cause the camcorder's microphone diaphragm to wrinkle with a metallic tinkle in what was being recorded. That proved to be more than the camcorder was able to cope-with, and the picture became disjointed and proceeded in 'fits-and-starts' when displayed. However, I am talking 'serious' wind there, which blew my tripod over at one stage, and only being blown up against a wire fence, stopped it from disappearing over a cliff altogether. Similarly, having crouched low against the wind's force at one juncture, I had my work cut-out getting back to my feet again.

Hi everyone,

To my horror, having just shot my first comercial project, I get home to discover that the camera(a Canon T2i / 550D) has dropped frames. Its not a playback issue - its in the actual footage. Its jerky and looks terrible(obviously!). I belive its the fault of the class 6 SD memory card I was using

Is there any action I can take to save this footage and my skin, Im using Final Cut Express / Sony Vegas Platinum ?

help please!

That is probably a type 1 avi, Premiere Elements will only work with type 2 avi files.

Convert the file to DV-AVI using Windows Movie Maker and Premiere Elements will work with that file just fine.

First time opportunity to use newly purchased Premiere Elements 7.0;had been using online services and/or MS Movie Maker neither of which I had issues with imported .avi files being excessively jerky on playback within the application.Â

Properties on the .avi files are as follows:

Image: 320x240; Bit Rate: 64kbps; Audio Format: MPEG Layer-3; Frame Rate: 30FPS; Data Rate: 5080kbps

I've tried what adjustments I could find in the application, but to no avail. Since this was a relatively easy thing in the other applications I used am I just missing setting a particular configuration or other parameter?

I am editing a music video where we shot a good deal of it with the audio mix sped up 100% and then filmed the band at 60 FPS, so that when played back they have that surreal, "singing and playing in real time but looks kinda slowish" feel. It's been done a billion times and I know you know what I'm talking about.

At any rate, when I right click on the clips in the timeline and choose "Speed/Duration", then drop it to 50% (with the Frame Blend option checked), it plays in the source windows at a nice, smooth speed. But, when I render the clips out, suddenly they playback WORSE, containing jerky motion and it's not at all smooth anymore.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I've tried checking off Frame Blend as well but it still looks the same; clunky when rendered. I think it's odd that it plays back so smoothly when not rendered (I'm assuming my vidcard is responsible for the video playback of unrendered clips?). Here's some critical data that might help you come up with a solution:

Shot On:Â Panasonic DVC PRO HD Camera w/ Red Rock Lens
Editing:Â Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 (licensed)
Editing Mode:Â P2 720p 60Hz DVCPROHD
Frame Size:Â 960 x 720 (16:9)
Timebase:Â 23.976 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio:Â HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.33)
Display Format: 24 fps timecode
