I edit film with FCP and I have reached a point where I need a better computer. The Mac Pro I have now dates from 2006/2007 and is way to slow for my needs. The question now is: should I upgrade the computer I have or should I buy a new iMac or Mac Pro. I would appreciate any advice! I'm of course looking for the most cost effective solution.

This is what I have today:

Mac Pro

2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon

2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Hard-disk: 232,44 GB

I might also have to upgrade my Final Cut Pro as it is as old as the computer: FCP 5.1.4 What would you recommend here?

I need a computer to edit film (possibly HD) and also a good way to do my back-up. My internet connection isn't very fast...

Thank you in advance!

I've got a fairly powerful PC right now, Intel i7 2.67GHZ, Radeon HD4670 Graphics 512MB, with 2 GB Ram running 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. When I work in Sony Vegas Pro on HD Video I lock-up or crash with the BSOD. I had originally had the 64-bit version of Windows 7 with 6 GB of ram and I crashed even more often. It also seems like I have to restore to an old image every couple of months because some virus infects the PC.

Since I retired recently I no longer have to develop on Windows based machines and was considering moving to one of the all-in-one iMacs. My question is if I go this road and start editing HD video with Final Cut Pro should I then be in a blissful state of hardware stability or are you iMac users getting your share of lock-ups and crashes too. Hate to drop a couple Gs and go through a new learning curve just to have the same old problems on a new platform.

I would love to hear any and all opinions.

Hi all,

I am wanting to get a new mac pro in conjunction with Final Cut Studio. My question is should I wait for the 2010 model to come out or should I get their current model. If I get their current model what specs would you recommend? I shoot with an HMC 150. Thanks

Hi Everyone,

I have the latest version of FCP and wanted to know how I can burn a high quality DVD. I don't know if it is possible but can I use a regular DVD and burn HD onto it? The video I want to output is only 30min. Note: I read somewhere that you can tweak FCP and apple DVD studio pro to make such a disk that I am noting here.

FYI:The inputed footage to my timeline was HDV 1080i (Sony HVR-V1U). I have a new iMac computer and want to use the DVD burner that is built into my apple computer instead of taking the blu-ray route.

Hi there,

I am a first time/amatuer and would like someday to go pro. My experience is only with a digital slr camera. I owned a Canon 350D DSLR and a sony Laptop running Windows Vista Business. I sometimes use Adobe Photoshop but I prefere not to "cheat/enhance" those photos. I do know that there is a huge diff between a camera and a camcorder and is willing to take up the challenge.

My friends and I (all not professional climber) attempted 6,962 m (22,841 ft) Mount Aconcagua and was documented. The documentary cost was sponsored by local TV. To make the story short, the documentary was done professionally by 2 cameraman and unfortunately we failed only 300m to the summit due to bad weather. They used 2 sony pro video camera with DV tape type which I forgot which model it was.

The group now is trying for another attempt in January 2011. Unable to secure a sponsor, our budget is kinda tight this time around that we cant afford to hire professionals to the the documentary again. Since I have a long interest with video making, I am now jumping into this oppurtunity to document the journey. I am thinking of submitting the end product to local tv or competition if it is good enough! It is about normal people trying to do the extra ordinary. We do have a list of mountains to conquer!

My budget allows me to purchase:

IMAC 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 with 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM. ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB and 1TB Serial ATA Drive.

Final Cut Studio.

Canon HF200.

My questions:

Will this be a good computer that doent take forever to render or complete my work and software for a first time documentary? I do hope to go pro in the future but I do not wish to buy another computer in the next 3 years. Yes I cant afford the macpro just yet.

Is that a good choice for a starting camera that can handle "some/little" outdoor abuse? I wish to shoot the documentary in HD and it MUST not be heavy!

Will the camera take the cold weather? My research tells me that flash memory handles cold weather better than any other type... is this correct?

Am I going the right path by choosing Mac over Windows?

My budget is REALLY tight... please advise.

Thanks in advance.

But i want to and i heard the vixia hf20 needed like a really good computer to be able to edit and alot of people edit on macs. And i dont know if i would be able to on this mac because this one has NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics while the others have ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics with 256MB I hope this makes sence and i dont sound dumb. lol thanks

I'm looking at a 24" iMac with 4GB RAM and a 1TB hard drive. I will be using Final Cut Express and a future AVCHD HFS100. Am I missing anything? Will this computer suit editing? Ideas?

Hey all,

I have a white 24" iMac (first gen Intel chips) and am running Final Cut Express to do some painting lesson videos. These are pretty basic stuff with minimal effects. They are rendering super slow. A 20 minute video took 24 hours to export using the standard Vimeo HD quicktime settings.

My machine has the max amount of ram 4 gigs with a internal 250 GB drive. I have several external Lacie drives hanging off of it for storage and backup. One 1TB on the FW800 port One 1TB on the FW400 Port and a 500GB off of the usb port. I have my source video files on the FW800 drive and the FCE project on the FW400 drive with all apps and os on the internal drive. All of the video is shot in full 1920X1080 HD from a Canon HF100 AVCHD

I don't know where the bottle neck is...Bandwidth to the hard drives, lack of memory, or just processor speed. I would like to get this machine to perform reasonable so I don't have to purchase a new one.

I am sure there is a way to improve the horrible speed but I am ignorant of how to setup this machine for higher performance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for your time,

I recently purchased a JVC GZ-HD3U camcorder. I've been searching high and low to find a way in which to get this camera to work with my iMac. Now that I've found a instructional video from JVC themselves, I still have some questions that I'm hoping you can help me with.Â

1.	The video says to record in "1440 CBR" if I'm wanting to transfer the video to the computer via firewire using Quicktime Pro or another suitable program. It's my understanding from what I've read on the web, 1440 CBR only records at 27 frames per second when I believe the camera is capable of 30 frames per second. Will I notice any difference when I play back the video.

2.	The video also says something about recording in FHD. I don't have a clue as to what FHD stands for. By using the FHD format, it states that I can transfer my video files to the Mac using a USB cable and then converting the files to AIC files. Does the FHD recording format record at a high frame rate than 1440 CBR or does it record at a lower frame rate?

I want the best quality/frames per second from this camera. Any help that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.Â

Here is the link to the JVC instructional video so you'll have an idea of what I'm trying to ask of you:http://media2.jvc.com/camcorder/macHD.mov
