Hi lauren. Like someone said above, it's very cool that you encourage her :)

And all the advises sound good. However, if I were 14 years old and learning myself how to do green screen stuff, I probably would reach the point where I say to myself: "Oh, all that seems easy. I just need a green material for background, light it separately, then light my talent. Load it to the latest iMovie, and that's it! Oh wait... I don't have lights.. mm but any lights would do, right?"

For me, the hardest thing to get, are good lights. The rest is pretty much a do it yourself project, and the learning process.

Lighting is everything : ) (at least most of the time)

Hi all- I went to Tubetape and they said there is no video software for Mac. They have all the green screen stuff of course. I have seen things that have space ship back grounds etc. I think she would love that but is it true there is nothing for Macs? My daughter has iMovie but where do you get the cool back grounds?

Thanks Luis for the great video. I am going to show it to my daughter after Christmas.

Thanks Moabman for the green painted wall idea. That sounds ideal but my hubby would kill me :)

Thanks Jennifer for the links. I will check them out. She will enjoy the Daniel movie too.

You guys are great!

Hi, Lauren, I'm Jennifer O'Rourke, Videomaker's managing editor. Here are a few more links you might want to share with your daughter about Green Screen work. It's really getting much easier than in the old days, due to the camera and keying technology, but you can still improve your video with good production techniques.

http://www.videomaker.com/article/8787/ [Lighting for Green Screen]

http://www.videomaker.com/article/14949 [Making Green Screen Believable]

http://www.videomaker.com/article/14933 [Directing Talent in the Green Screen]

And it might be nice to have someone her own age to follow for inspireation. We've been following the career of Daniel Hart, a 16-year old producer who has been making videos for 10 years. Here's a profile we recently wrote:

http://www.videomaker.com/article/15532/ [Daniel Hart - Up and Coming Producer]

You're a terrific mom to encourage your daughter in this very rewarding career or hobby. Good luck to her and tell her to keep on making those videos, it only get better!

Hello Lauren

You will need a couple of things to make a successful greenscreen production, being lights the most important. The greenscreen fabric is not that important because you can use any cloth that is green (or blue). For better results you can get a muslin backdrop, which works great and is relatively cheap. As for lightning you need at least 4 lights (2 for the greenscreen itself and the other two for the talent). You will also need to consider where are you going to setup your greenscreen studio and how much space you have available. As for software you can manage with iMovie and get got quality results, as long as you light the greenscreen right.

I suggest you to visit Tubetape.net, they have everything you will need regarding greenscreen and they can answer any question regarding equipment. They also have a 50% weekly deal (every Thursday) which you could get everything you need for half the price. Also check Ebay for greenscreen backdrops.

Here is a video I made about Lightning a Greenscreen a la Guerrilla Style. Enjoy.

We need Mac compatible stuff. Any ideas?

It would also be nice if Videomaker would not only allow the importation of pictures into posts, but also house them. At least one time I can remember directing a Videomaker user with text, but also by posting a picture coming directly off of the "C:\" drive and not showing up during viewing/post preview.

I would like to see some kind of chat "how-to" on a weekly or monthly schedule. Something like an interactive Tips and Tricks type event. I know it could get a little messy with 12 people entering 18 different questions and answering 20 of them at the same time but if it were moderated/filtered to keep things on topic it would be an interesting experiment? Maybe even opening a recent T&T to a Q&A session. or some such.

Then have the context posted after the event so that those who could not attend could maybe read through it.

Wow, that's a big image.

I'm with Earl on the 'don't limit the response size of posts.' Yeah, on occasion the odd 'epic' response gets written, but like Earl said, "You don't have to read it." Chat could be interesting, but there are way too many yahoo's floating through at times and keeping them on a leash would be a pain. Now maybe some live interactive webinars would be cool.

What I would like to see is sections where members of different skill levels could ask their specific questions. Though the primary demo for VM is beginners, I see there are many intermediate, advanced and pros actively participating in the forums too. Maybe with a 'questions for beginners' section those hordes of 'what camera should I buy?' inquiries might flock together in one place and give Earl and the rest of us some peace. In fact, at the top of the beginner's section you could put a permanent post 'What Camera Should I Buy?'

Don't limit response lengths - those who don't like to read don't HAVE to. For some posts the information given might actually take a bit of time to write and read - it isn't always appropriate to attempt to say what needs to be said in short, pithy prose. Long doesn't always mean the response, or post, isn't to the point and specific.

I'm in other forums that are very active, and questions often get answered in minutes....

http://www.pentaxuser.co.uk/forum/

for example... so chat rooms aren't really needed.

But a few things that I'd like to see are for example:

make vanish those stupid "A' " things that crop up everytime you edit a post....

color change threads after a period of inactivity or time so dummys like me, or new members don't answer three year old posts...

have a "Happy" button where a poster can tag any answers they felt were helpful to thier questions and give members a rank based on how many "Happy tags" they've accumulated... to kinda give new members a fast heads up on who regularly gives good answers.

Limit the length of response posts. Short straight answers would be easier to keep up with...

It'd be kinda fun to have an online video collaboration system for exchanging content and editing videos. May not be the most ideal with possible bandwidth issues, but it would be very useful to have a destined feature for sharing content and requesting edits by pros and video enthusiasts with software capable.

Videomaker could also broaden their scope up for types of software to review, consumer editing, NLE, sound/music composition, graphics composition, etc.

Hey Derek, I almost had a sense of deja vu - wasn't something like posted just a few months ago. I mean, I know it was only last year, but what other changes are you guys planning?

FYI: I visit http://www.wedvidpro.com (all but stagnant and defunct, but still there...); http://www.videouniversity.com (fairly active, but a LOT of self-congratulatory back-patting among the good ol' boys/girls club members); http://www.dvprofessionals.com (good, solid forum, but not highly active except for a few who try hard to keep it current and interesting.) I hit on others from time-to-time, a few blog sites, but the above are where I generally visit at least once a day. I will occasionally check out the various "user group" forums like LAFCPUG, and some of the PVA groups around. A few of the PVA actually post live-to-web during their monthly meetings.

I wish there were a way to convince new folks here to do a search before asking the daily "what camera" question; and am I the ONLY ONE knocking down all the astroturf? Gosh, the minute I turn my back seems there's two or three, even more, popping up. :-) I don't mind.

Chat (as FILMS Inc. notes) could/would be good, I suppose. There are times here when a good number of members are on-board and it might make for interesting live discussions, especially if administrative staff participated occasionally.

Perhaps even a weekly, or if that is too much, a monthly topic on lights; cameras; DSLR; audio, etc.?

My Short Slideshow career over a few years was hobby and for extra cash. I did many shows for family and friends as well as a couple of dozen clients and small business.

Being in a industry now I do not have the time to do shows or nor do I wish to keep up my website hosting and domain name. I am looking to sell the entire website, content including logo, tagline, copy, photos etc.. for a fair price to someone who is trying to start or fasttrack a business idea for some extra money.

I started out with and used Proshow Producer as my development tool for the shows but obviously your own shows can be plugged in along with your contact info etc..The shows on the site are a couple of years old and I did get much better but just never updated the site.

If I am not allowed to post this here please let me know asap and I will remove it. Not sure on board rules. It is a niche market and want to get it to someone who can really use it.

http://www.matchstickvideo.com - mixing music and memories (always loved my tagline)

The Site is targeted for slideshows & Photo Montages
It has a Pagerank of 1
It is 2 years old
I have done some minor Search Engine Optimization on it
It has 32 Links pointing at it
The traffic is about 40-50 visitors per month
With No promotions this year I had 6 inquiries
That resulted in 4 sales 2 I gave to another company in my city because I do not have the time.
Average price of shows about $200
It is hosted with godaddy right now and can be transferred very easily.
All HTML Files can be provided including stock photos
Plug in your own shows
Plug in your own prices
Plug in your own contact info
++ Included in the final sale will be some information regarding Optimizing the site further for your city and how to compete online going forward. I do Search Engine Marketing for a living now and have spent very little time on this site. There is more that can be done and I will include a Top 10 List of SEO ideas for the new site owner free of charge.

Please forward all questions to me.
Please forward me your OFFER and a brief
description of your situation.
Price isn't everything here.
I am glad to get this into someones hands
who will do something with it around their
love for slideshows and allowing for part time income.

Thanks

I'm a member of the producer's network for TV360 (www.realquestions.tv/tv360/) and that is one of their primary services. But since I live in Des Moines IA, I haven't gotten any requests. Then there's the Reel Exchange (http://reel-exchange.com/) which hosts demo reels of all sorts of production professionals and provides want ads for locating talent.

I'm sure there are many more out there. Hopefully we'll get a bunch more from other members.

Is there such a thing as a web site or clearing house for people who need videos produced and are looking for a videographer to make them? Just a thought.
