Hi folks. I often have to produce promotional videos that helps to promote the organization I am working with. We are a non-profit missions organization. We have works all around the world. The work I do is to try to put together videos that help other people to know what we have been doing, to update them or to encourage them to join us.

Does any body else works in this type of production?

I am new in making promotional videos and hardly find material on how to make this videos on the internet. I mean, styles, ideas, what to do and not to do, things like that.

If you guys want to pinch in ideas, or experiences it would be great.

Ask question too if you want.

Thanks. God bless.

I ran across this article by Michell Kanashkevich discussing 5 common mistakes made by first-time Photographers documenting their travels. Having done a fair bit of traveling around 'The Rock' as both a Still and Video Shooter, I fully agree with Mitchell's observations (having run afoul of a couple of them myself) and feel the info applies to shooting video at a higher degree. The prep work required for video is much greater than photography. In spite of the 'YouTube' mindset of 'just shoot it', when you're taking the time to travel and investing in gear to record your journey the diff between 'Tube' video and 'great' video will depend on the extra time and steps you took to prepare. Check it out.

Hi guys I just got started on the forums here on videomaker but I have been a fan of the magazine for years. I just completed a draft copy of one of two versions of barn doors that will work on a work light. I still need to calibrate the position on each doors in this version a little more and I also need to paint the doors with thermal black paint. I did a few test with this design last night and it works pretty well for what it costs to make. I have few quick pictures below:

I am doing a tutorial video on this within the next few weeks. Let me know if you see any room for improvement. I'm starting on version two next week!

Cool and groovy,

I'm interseted in producing DVD's of speakers from seminars and instructors / craftspeople on topics related to How-To do something. I don't know how to handle compensating the presenter. Do I give a percentage of sales or pay him outright? What about ownership and reproducing the DVD?

Does anyone else do something along this line?

Not long ago a member was looking for info on how to shoot a live theatrical performance. He got some really good advice, but sometimes it's just better to 'see' how something should look than to just read about it.

Here's a video by Ian Lucero discussing how he shot a live dance performance. He gives some good tips on what to do to round out your shot list so you'll have plenty to work with during post.

For all of you who aspire to create documentary films, here is an article by Basil Tsiokos a veteran film festival programmer on what not to do when producing documentary films. Apparently some feel his criticisms are too harsh, but as a filmmaker who cut his teeth in the biz making documentary films I found his points were well made. Also, Mr. Tsiokos being an 'insider' for the selection of film festival (Sundance) and public television (POV) programming I think he's definitely worth checking out. I also think that 'old hands' at doc making would do well to turn an eye to the article for it reaffirmed the lessons I've learned over the years.

Let me know what you think.

Looking back at the topics here trough the past year I haven't seen a topic like this...

Currently my Video Subject Bookcase only contains periodicals and software/equipment user manuals. For those of us beginning to get into this area, be it hobby or profession, a question...

After all that you know/learned, to date, what one book on this subject would you make sure you took with you if you had to evacuate your residence for a indefinite period of time?

Greetings-- I am not a video pro but I sort of fell into making a bunch of videos about how to shave (don't laugh, I have over 1 million total views on my Youtube channel). I use Foodtv's "Good Eats" show as inspiration and guidance and I see the host, Alton Brown, narrate various cooking guides both on camera and off. Are there any "rules of thumb" regarding on-camera vs. off-camera narration?Â
