quick newbie question here that I can't find in any searches.

Can I use the Canon Vixia HF200 as a firewire recorder? I have a firewire camera/signal and I want to record it on the hf200's SD card. Is that possible? I havent' had a chance to use the hf200 yet so I don't know if it can do that. The other camera is a sony 570, it has a long lens with zoom and iris control with a firewire 400 out but the "client" has and wants to shoot on the hf200.

if it can't can anyone recommend a cheap recorder solution?

thanks

it's simply due to different potential (voltage) on the ground of your different devices and is a commun and well known problem.

to be safe i would make sure i had one for both!

Thanks FX1shooter! I will try that out this week. Question: why does it work fine at my set up at home (the ONLY thing different is that I have a way smaller sound board). could it be that i need a DI box or isolator going from the board to the camera? or just the camera to the tv...

you have a ground loop! the ground from the TV and your camera are causing this... you need to isolate them here's a post I found sometime ago on DVinfo.net

"I ran into a similar problem while recording a kick-boxing match several
years ago. The camera audio was fed from a Mackie 1402 and video out
was feeding a projector hung from the convention center ceiling.

A severe hum was introduced when the video was connected. The problem
was fixed by inserting an isolation transformer on the video out. Video
isolation transformers are available at Markertek.

Of course I didn't have one in my bag, but the second camera on the
shoot was operated by a local TV station tech. He was able to find one
at the station and returned with it just before the show was to start"

i had the same issue the other day and this resolved it... mi mystake i call them all DI-Boxes ( this one is labeled VIDEO...

hope this helps you...

It could very well be the TV that's causing interference. The RCA audio cables (red and white) are not balanced audio like three-pin XLR. If it's TV output you're trying to feed, why not just tap into the TV's audio feed and use the camera's a/v jack for sending it to the TV.

what you need is a DI-Box to isolate the grounds (eliminate ground loops) and to match the impedance. search DI-Box on Google and you will find one that meets your needs

When you recreated the setup at home did you use the same cables you used at church? Cabling is a very common point of interference. The first step is to eliminate the cables themselves. If you can use the same cables at home and get no hum, i would check the path of the cables at church to see if the cable is in proximity to sources of "noise."

I am recording our Sunday church service with a Canon Vixia hf s200. I have a single audio cable running from our sound boards tape out, directly into the camera. the audio is fine, no distortion or hum or anything. When i connect the a/v cable to a tv, with a male to male a/v cable (connected to TV) connected to a coupler to male a/v to male 1/8" (connected to camcorder) i have a hum in the recording, which doesn't make sense to me, considering it is sending the signal to TV, not from TV to camcorder. the hum is only there when i connect the cable from the camcorder a/v out to the coupler which connects to the a/v cable into the TV...any reason why?

OK here is what happens, I have a shoot list that I keep when we do our How To videos. I record the number of the "keeper" sequence on our shoot list. When we are through shooting I take the SD card to the computer and download the files to the hard drive. Then I find that the numbers on the shoot list are off. sometimes by as little as one number, other times the numbers have been completely different.

Any ideas why this is happening. It is making it really hard to stay organized.

I'm not sure what your budget, application or project needs consist of, but a small mixer allows dual sterio inputs without have two mono voices coming out of different speakers. I have a Shure mixer (older than this model) that allows voice over control. Just a FYI. This model sells for aprox. $220.00.

Hi,

I realize that this topic is probably super obvious and answered elsewhere but I'm selfish and needy

=-).

We run (right now) a single HF 200 and have been using a shotgun mic in our how-to videos. The problem we run into is that the shotgun is great for stand ups, awful when we are looking away from the camera (we shoot how-to videos on car restoration and are thus in places that a boom is impractical. A lavalier/lapel mic seems to be the next best solution.

With the background out of the way, how would I easily and CHEAPLY (we have yet to show a profit in our venture and money is as tight as a pair of pants on Britney Spears) get two lavaliers to work on our one HF200 (we often have two people working and are often off site with limited help: see Britney Spears above)?

I have a slight problem with the HF200 , cos for some reasons , when i
hooked it up with the HDMI cable ( the mini-hdmi to normal hdmi) the LG
tv recingised it being plugged in but it didnt get a signal. It can only
be play on its lil LCD screen

First thing came to my mind is damn the TV is messed up, but when I try
others HDMI devices on the tv with the same port it is all fine.

Then I thought, well must be the HDMI port on the HF200 is messed up,
took it upstair hook it up with another LG HD tv and guess what ! it is
running perfectly fine with no problems , stunning sound and everything

So now I kinda diagnosed that it is not the TV problem nor the HF200
problem.

a bit of extra information, the LCD HD tv that didnt work with HF200 is
47LH3000 , and the one compatible with is LG M227WD

did anyone get a solution for that?

Well, I am replying to my own thread, but I just wanted to report some corrections and add a bit to the last post.

After further experiments, I withdraw my suggestion about not getting the Soft F/X 3. It seems to work fine on the HF200. It seems the visible pattern I was referring to was an iMovie issue; the footage looked beautiful and smooth after I restarted iMovie. Here are a few observations:

You want to keep the aperture wide open, as the filter pattern will show at small apertures, such as when shooting outdoors on a bright day. Use ND filters if you want to use diffusion.

It is wonderful on people, just like it says in the adverts. However, try to avoid specular highlights in the frame as they tend to bloom in an obvious way (unless you want that effect, of course). Also avoid using it in silhouette shots.

I found that it helps to dial down the exposure a little bit (about 1-3 dB). This makes the blooming effect more subtle.

There seems to be some chromatic aberration near the edges of the frame while using this filter, throughout the zoom range. I need to run more tests on this. Most people won't notice this, however.

Well, I tried the Soft F/X 3. DON'T BUY THIS FOR HD CAMERAS!!!

The filter pattern is almost always visible, and the effect is a little over-the-top. Try one of the HD diffusion filters, maybe. I am using the following custom image settings with no diffusion filter:

Brightness: -1

Contrast: -1

Sharpness: -1

Colour: -1

with xv colour off and PF30 mode (since I am using FCE 4 which does not support 24p). The image looks amazing after these adjustments: less blown highlights, better colour and not too much sharpening.

I also try to keep WB, focus, exposure and audio gain in manual mode while shooting. Hope this is useful to someone!

Any suggestions for a diffusion filter for this camera? Anyone?

I am looking for a diffusion filter to use with my Canon HF200. The Tiffen Soft F/X 3 is suggested on some websites. Is this is a good one to use? I want something that takes away the over-sharp video look, but is not too over-the-top.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. My headset has two plugs: a red one for the mic, and a green one for the headphones. I am plugging in only the mic.

In the meanwhile I visited a local camera store and asked them about this. They told me that I need to get a mic which has the correct impedance for video work, and that the regular pc mics might not work with the camcorder. I also had a look at the manual; Canon suggests a "condenser microphone with its own power supply".

Maybe it's a good idea to start a camcorder mic compatibility thread.

Starting at the simple...

Your headset mic, does it share the headphone plug or is it separate (do you have one plug, or two)?

If it's one then I do not think it will work. It will cut out the onboard mic as it will open that part of the curcuit to disable it. It will also, most likely, have 4 or 5 contacts on the plug (tip, usually ground, 2 or 3 bands, one for mic and others for left and right headphone, and the part that enters the "handle").

If it has 2 separate plugs, are you sure you are not plugging in the headphone instead of the mic?

Hi, I recently got a Canon HF200. I am now looking
for an external microphone (one
that plugs into the mic terminal).
Just out of curiosity I plugged
in a regular headset mic (the
jack is compatible). However, it does
not record anything. The in-built
microphone cuts out when I
plug in the headset mic, but
there is no sound. I have
already tried manually increasing
the gain.

So the question is, is this to be
expected, or is there a problem
with the mic terminal? The camera
is brand new and everything else
works (including the headphones).

Any suggestions/insights?

HDMI and Component Video, at this point, are one of the many HD communications which I've never had to deal with. I'm still shooting SD... don't even own a flat panel TV other then a few 17" Dell monitors around the house. Are you sure that your play tests are being done in VCR (Playback) mode? Due to a special trend in the camcorder's firmware settings, it may not be capable of outputting HDMI of the camera is not in its proprietary VCR/Playback mode.

Hi,

I have the same issue connecting my HF200 to my Samsung TV. The video is playing on both built-in LCD and via component but not thru HDMI. I also get the No Signal error. Any suggestions? TIA!
