I have a friend who is using Sony Vegas Pro 11 (build 511) on Windows 7. He has been having insanely bad crashing issues, and claims there is no pattern to them. He just bought a brand new, radiator-cooled video card (and computer) because the old one wasn't up to par. When he got his new computer, I went to help him open his project up because Vegas crashed every time he tried to reconnect some missing photos. I don't know what I did differently than him, but it did not crash for me the whole night. He has used the program before successfully, and I don't know the first thing about it. Does anyone out there have ANY ideas? He is at wits end and about to abandon his project.

Hi everyone,

I have done lots of weddings and web-videos (talking heads), so I'm not new to video production, but I have recently been asked to help put together an informational video for a school. We're doing this at a very low cost for them so I would like to be as prepared as I can be in pre-prodcution so I can deliver a great product with minimal production/editing time.

It will only be a 3 minute video with a few talking heads and some action b-roll shots. It's basically going to be used on their website to quickly bring some of the school's highlights to the viewer's attention. The point is to sell this school as a great place to send your kids.

I understand this may be an "everyone does it differently" answered question, but because I've never done this I would some insight into pre-production workflows.

Are there pre-production documents that I could use to assist my working with the client in piecing this together? Anything you've learned the hard-way (even contract-wise) which I could learn from you?

Thanks for any advise!

Hey all,

I am new here, and fairly new to the business. The company I work for is looking to do improvements to their small studio and I have been elected to spearhead the project. I have looked around on the net a bit for some of the items we were looking into getting and I thought I would try here to see what your suggestions are.

What we are looking into getting is...

1. Tile flooring (suggestions on what I should be looking for, what I should avoid? We are hoping to be able to paint the tiles chroma green/black/white when needed)

2. Track/rail for curtains (a cyc) ( what should I be looking for? Do I have to get the rails from a video equipment dealer or is there a cheaper more readily available choice?

3. Looking to put up a grid for small studio lights (What should I be looking for and where? Just at the local hardware store?

4. Sound proofing for a small v/o studio and in the main part of the studio (Should I go with sound proofing blankets/foam made for that or can I get away with hardware store items?)

5. Blacking out windows (Paint, stick on vinyl, what else, what would be the best option?)

6. Paint (What is my best choice, obviously matte but is there something I may miss?)

Thanks ahead of time for any response, it is greatly appreciated. I can't wait to get this project going, I will have to post some before and after pictures at a later date!

Greetings. I have been looking for ways to make money with the video skills I learned in college. I came to the conclusion that I could easily shoot real estate photos and videos for agents in the small community I live in. (I will be getting a Canon D7 in the coming months, so would use that.)

The idea is, going to the major real estate firms out here, I think its only 2. Going to them with the option to contract me as there video/photo guy. Instead of connecting with the countless agents, and working for them. Connecting with the firms itself. so that when any of its many agents needs photos or video, the firm just says "we got a guy for that, we'll send him out tomorrow."

Is this a somewhat good business plan for such a venture? And if so, how would I appropriately charge for such a service? a standard by the hour rate? Or on a per visit system? And what would be an appropriate cost for such work? I wanna make money, but I also wanna be competitively priced. I can debate semiotics in film, but was taught NOTHING about video business practices in college lol. So any comments or thoughts are welcomed.

Thank you for your time.

Hello! My sister and I have been making simple dance videos for Youtube and and Japanese video community called Nico Nico Douga. We've only made a couple so far, but we're not satisfied with the outcome of our videos. We took some video production classes in high school, but we're using totally different equipment for a totally different end product this time. We were hoping we could get some well needed tips from the community here!

Our Youtube channel is here. They're just simple videos that follow the general formula of one continuos shot while we dance (and sing).

[An example of one of our videos]

We are using a Canon Vixia HF R20 camera with a tripod. For the videos we've uploaded so far, we've only used Window Movie Maker, but we now have Adobe Premier Elements 10 that we are using to edit our future videos. We hoped to have better lighting/quality and an overall more professional feeling product, but we're falling quite short of what we want. How can we achieve this?

[What we'd like to have our videos like]

We'd like to achieve an end product like the video above. Most of the time we'll be filming outdoors, but we'll be filming indoors from time to time as well. How can we get that "larger than life" feeling that the second video has?

Thank you very much!

Hi,

I have a 7 year old GL-2 that can no longer capture. The LCD and the eye piece looks like a green to magenta gradient. When I press record the magenta and green gradient is recorded. When I put in a pre-recorded tape it looks completely normal.

If anyone has any ideas on what's wrong, or how I can fix it, if it can be fixed, please respond.

Hello, I'm a graphic designer but have done some small video projects in the past. I was approached by a potential client wanting 130 1 minute commercials for his custom pen website. I attached the following proposal, thinking my rates are fair and he's telling me to quote him lower (even though he won't get other quotes nor tell me a budget he has in mind!) Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!!

----

$225 per 1 minute commercial (10% discount based on 150+ commercials, anything under 150 is $250)

(includes script, filming, producing, directing, equipment, editing, rendering)

Minus $20 per commercial if script is provided.

I viewed a few videos from discountmugs.com and I could guarantee a higher production value than their commercials.

If the price fits into your budget, the next step would be to hire an actor/actress. Unless you have someone in mind you would like to be the spokesperson, I highly recommend that I hire a professional. I'm hoping to find one for $10 per commercial (based on 150 commercials is $1500 and I'm estimating 30 hours of filming required for this project.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?<wbr></wbr>v=8fFJb_FnCF0&feature=player_<wbr></wbr>embedded

Sample of what he showed me he wants for 130 of his products.

Ok, basically what Im trying to do is create the effect where you have two boxes on screen, one is someones eyes, the other is a hand going into a cupboard and pulling something out...where you have the eyes on top of the other shot which is the shot w/ the hand going into the cupboard, here's my problem:

I want to keep the same size of the shot, I dont want to shrink or expand any part of the clip, I just want one shot to focus on the eyes, and the PIP to focus on the hand going into the cupboard. BUT my problem is, I cant move them (without shrinking/blowing them up) to be on top of each other, they are both in the middle of the 'main shot'...I want to keep the main shot, select part of the shot, and move one shot up, and the other shot down.

Hopefully I explained it well enough, anyone know how?Ã??Ã?Â

Thanks!

Ã?Â

Hey guys, I'm new to the whole freelance business. I am 20 years old, going to be a sophomore at Salisbury University in Maryland and I have a few questions that I'm hoping you more experienced business savvy folk would know.

I am experienced with a wide variety of programs, including the adobe suite (premiere, photoshop, after effects) I also am beginning to become very proficient with Final Cut Studio (Final Cut X holds 50/50 approval in my opinion) I also have good tech skills when it comes to HTML, web design, and computer repair.

Enough about me and unto the questions.

I recently completed a video for the university (http://vimeo.com/25534229) if you want to check it out and get a feel for what I can do or need to work on. I also have 3 other videos in production. 2 more for the university and another for a Physical Therapist who is making training videos.

My question is how to I gage pricing? where do I start? I charged the university $1000 for the 7 min vid, I way undercut myself. I want to charge a competitive rate but under charge a little due to my lack of "accredited" experience. what do I do here?

Should I open up my own business and apply for a fictitious name? I want to ride of taxes and save some bucks! I have the name and I also own my own equipment. Sony FX-7 and a T2I canon. I have 2 editing computers one a PC tower the other a MacPro laptop. I have all the tools but am unsure if I should wait?

I have got a ton of offers and can take them if I am willing to expand. I am just afraid that school, work, and my social life will seriously all fail if I try to take on to much? I am very driven and LOVE, I mean love this industry but I want to keep above a 3.0.

last question is, should I transfer to an art school? My university is a 5/10 when it comes to providing what I'm looking for. It has a fully working HD studio but the kids are not talented to make use of it. as a freshman I took control and quickly realized the lack of skill that was available. I am not knocking these students because we were ALL there once but to move ahead I need skilled co-workers/partners/students.

I really want to keep making great strides with this and any help you folks can add would make my day! If any of you are in the Maryland area or up in PA near Harrisburg let me know because I'll take anyone who helps me and wants to go, out to eat. knowledge isn't free, I greatly appreciate any that you'll share :)

Thanks guys!

Y'all probably get this a lot, but I'm new and need help. I've been editing on a small scale for a couple years now and on final cut express for about a year but next year I will be a senior in high school and will be doing an independent film course and I am probably going into film in college so I need a good camera. I will be going to italy in two weeks with a leadership group and I have been asked to make a film recording the trip and the work put into it but I need to get a good camera preferably under $1000 which I know is ridiculous but I figure y'all know what is best and can help me

navyspecwarfare on "AVCHD .mts to Standard DVD in Sony Vegas and DVD Architect?!"

When I drop my AVCHD .mts clips from my Canon HF10
camera into Sony Vegas Platinum
(consumer version), and then use the make DVD wizard, it renders and
then sends my media files to DVD architect 4.5 and then burns my DVD to
look spectacular. This is fantastic because my project I'm working on
is going on
4.7GB DVDs for commercial DVD players or computers. I simply shot in HD
because I wanted the option in the future to burn to Blu-ray, but won't
be doing that as of yet.

I don't want to use Sony Vegas Platinum though....I want more
advanced options and more options later for BluRay, etc etc etc and thus
need to edit, render, send the edited/rendered files to DVD architect
pro 5.0, and then burn to DVD using Sony Vegas Pro, not Platinum.

Sony Vegas Pro does not have this streamlined "make DVD" option like
the nice consumer version does.
After editing in Vegas Pro, I have to manually render my project using
the plethora
of options available, which honestly, I don't know much about. I've
tried rendering using NTSC widescreen for DVD architect (MPEG-2), I've
tried HDV with high settings, etc etc etc and when I drop these rendered
files into DVD Architect, they don't turn out well quality-wise like
they did in Sony Vegas Platinum using the automatic make DVD settings.Â
I
simply want to render these edited .mts files to a format that DVD
architect will like and then burn in high quality so my DVDs look good
on any DVD player with a standard monitor or HD monitor. Vegas
Platinum
does a great job, but it's unknown to me what it is doing behind the
scenes to render my files before it sends them off to DVD architect.
Obviously it works great given my test with Vegas Platinum and native
.mts files, but I have no idea what Vegas Platinum is doing to convert
or render these editing .mts files to make them still high quality and
smooth for DVD architect. I just need to know how to replicate this
process manually in Vegas Pro and I'm set.

So to recap, and in a nutshell, I need to know what render settings
to choose in Vegas Pro after editing my .mts files natively so I can
then send them over to DVD architect pro 5.0 and burn my project to a
DVD without loss of visual quality.

Any help greatly appreciated.

So, I'm making a parody of the mac vs. pc commercial (not comparing computers...I'm just using the format to poke fun at groups within the high school.) Does anybody have suggestions for a set? I've considered doing a green screen and making a kind of massive light box, but I wanted to know if anybody had better ideas. Thanks

I have a Canon XH-A1. I filmed an Osceola hunt with it yesterday. After the hunt, I ejected the tape and record-protected it and then put it back in the camera until we got back to the room. I tried to playback the video so we could watch it once and when I turned my camera to vcr/play, a red X started flashing on the screen with a message saying "remove cassette". The tape symbol in the top right corner of the display was also flashing red. I tried to eject the tape. The outer cover came open, I could hear the motor run, but the tape would not pop up. I closed the cover and tried it again for another time or two. Not knowing what to do next. I turned the camera off and on. Finally I took the battery out and put it back in. Now it ejected, but when I pulled the tape out, there was a little bit of tape outside the cassette. I wound it back up thinking this was the problem. I tried to put the tape back in. I could close the metal compartment and hear the motor, but the tape would not go down and then would spring back open. I tried another time or two with the same results. I tried a new tape as well as another older tape in case it was a problem with that tape. Still the same. I checked the footage I had just recorded on another camera and it was great with no issues from start to finish that I could tell. Can anyone help me or tell me what is wrong?

Sorry for the long post, but I figured all the details I could provide would possibly help someone to diagnose my problem. It's a bummer for sure, but it's even worse now that it's turkey season.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I found one of both of these cameras for sale, and they are both the same price

i have experience in shooting video and editing, but buying a camera is something i lack in

which one would be the best buy since they are the same price and come with everything they need to operate?

Hi there : )
I am looking into upgrading into HD from mini DV. I have a Canon Xm2 which is a really lovely video camera. I was wondering what to go for and thought maybe some of you guys on here can help? This website is really useful and I bet the magazine is great! We have nothing like this over here in the UK right now.

What I want is a main semi-pro camera and a smaller consumer camera with good HD to use as a static shot (using a MF to set the focus) for filming stuff on stage like music acts. With the semi-pro I also want to make short films/videos for my own creative exploration and documetry film to sell. For the semi pro I want to spend less than £2000. Perhaps £500 or so for the consumer one.

I checked out the reviews and the Panasonic AG-HMC41 fhd looks good. I also have seen another Panasonic on sale the "Panasonic AG-HMC81 / AG-HMC82 / AG-HMC84 professional AVCCAM HD shoulder-mount camcorder" the review for the HMC80 was pretty good on the website . . .

I would really appriciate hearing from people in this matter, thanks : )

I am trying to make a stop-motion music-video. Most of the footage is done and editing will commence, but I keep running into problems.

I would like to do the clipping and color-correcting in Final Cut Pro 7 and then do panning in Adobe After Effects.

1'st problem: As there is a mix of video and still-frame footage (and because it looks good) we want to do 16:9 format. However as the stills are individual (and as this setting goes for the entire production) in timeline it's a drag to drag down widescreen effect on every. So how to make a transparent layer with widescreen effect on to have in top of your timeline (or use a different method?) Can't figure it out.

2'nd problem: We're doing the film in 15fps. This is an option in After Affects, but not in Final Cut Pro it seems. Is there anyway to change this?

3'rd problem: Sometimes it could be very useful to merge the stills into a video clip. Is this doable without exporting and importing?

Thanks so very much to the people that might want to help me out, I'm still a beginner at just 18.
