Pablo on "CANON AX10 opinions? Is the natural replacement for SONY HVR-A1?"

Hi all. In the last months I been wondering whether is about time to
quit HDV in favour of more modern technology. I am very pleased with
HDV results it is the ideal format for what I do (mainly so-called
"industrial video" and live events), but it is cleat that HDV is a fading away format and in a couple of years I believe HDV
equiptment will significantly lost its value, and now I can make the
swich with much less investment.

I have the crossover "little pro" SONY A1 (which is a very good consumer
camcorder HC1 with professional upgrades like XLR), and seeing the AX10
it is just the same (the very good consumer Canon Vixia HF G10 with pro
upgrade) I thought it may the the natural replacement.
SONY has launch its HXR-MC50 as an equivalent for the A1, but it lacks XLR inputs, which are a must for me (and for any prosumer camcorder I believe).

Reviews of the AX10 are all very good.

Note: in the past I always thought that if Canon should have done a pro
based on HV-30 what Sony did with the A1 it would have been a real hit.
Now it seems it has done it but in AVCHD world instead of HDV.

I love the A1 quality with good light (cannot differenciate from its
major sister SONY Z1). The size many times is more an advantage rather
than a disadvantage. Despite not being the best for tripod, for eg., it
allow me to shoot with prosumer quality in places where I should raise
questionning with something with "real pro look" like the Z1. I hate the
lack of manual gain and iris control with the A1, and I don't like too
much the lot of noise the A1 has in low light. The lack of phisicall
buttons for other manual adjustements is something I can live with.

Do you believe AVCHD at 24 Mps equals HDV quality? Do you believe AVCHD is the natural replacement for HDV? Some people
says that probable a future low cost XDCAM EX format will be the
substitute for HDV, and AVCHD will be just a consumer format.

Seeing that Canon has create a pro version of the Vixia HF G10, it is
reasonable to believe that a new model is not going to be launched in
the near future (pro stuff usually has much longer product lifetime that
consumer's). Is this right?

I have noticed that on two separate occasions....Canon HV40 and XH-1A on the capture footage there are some red frames...sometimes it may be three frames and some time they are one second long....any idea what that might be?

Pablo on "HDV sucessor which is?"

I do independent low budget productions, mainly for independent DVD releases of so called "industrial videos" and also live recording of dance and other performing arts.

Now I am using HDV, which up to know if perfect for me: relative low cost equipment, good quality image specially with good lighting, easy raw material archiving (tapes) . The SONYs Z1 are just perfect for what I do. Also in my country, many low budget movies are filmed in HDV.

However, I realize that HDV is a dying format, but really don´t know which is going to be it replacement. SONYs XDCAM is another level, too expensive.

Is AVCHD the way to go? Which do you think is or will be the new "all-terrain" SONY Z1 of this new era?

For serious consumer/prosumer standpoint, which camera would be worth considering? For eg.,
the CANON HV30/40 (HDV)has been the choice of enthusiast and cinema students for a long time.

We are speaking of low budget/good quality HD.

Hi Guys

When I bought the Z1 a few years ago I believed it was HD broadcast quality (my belief supported by some broadcast companies using it in documentary production). Now I've read other reports that say it's HDV is not acceptable for full broadcast if I submitted a film captured on the Z1. Can anyone enlighten me?

I'm selling my very lightly used XHA1. I used the camera to shoot
church events so the camera didn't get a whole lot of use. I have always
used Sony's tapes camera was always stored in its case have never had a
single issue with it. I'm selling my XHA1 because i purchased a new
camera. If i could I would keep it as a second camera but my bank
account says no...

as you know the XHA1 doesn't have an hour meter. After counting my tapes
i have come to the conclusion the camera has about 15hours VERY low
time

Camera will come in original box with all original accessories

The camera will also come with lens protector (has been on since the day
i bought it only time it EVER came off was for periodic cleaning)

Included is 6 brand NEW tapes as well as one head cleaning tape

Sorry about the bad picture i took them with my phone just ask if you
want higher quality photos id be more then happy to do that for you

First of all, sorry if my english ins´t great...but i beleive is not so bad either and i will try to explain my problem as best as i can.

Ok, this is something i feel is becoming really important for websites all over the world investing on video news reporting and i (strangelly enough) can´t find any good info about it. So, if someone could help me out i would really be thankfull.

About a year and a half i started a project of video news reporting for a newspaper website. My professional background was in video for TV (i worked as producer and director on a tv news department) and i started only then learning about this wonderfull world of web video.

Usually we make video reports and then bring them in house (on SD Cards) for editing and publishing but lately i´ve been thinking on having the camera operators send me a few clips directly from the reporting site to our offices for almost imeddiate publishing. But what´s the best way to do it?

I want to be able to receive at least decent quality clips so i could do further editing in house so i can´t ask them to send me 320X240 clips. And good quality files are heavy to send over internet and take a large amount of time.

So, does anyone had the same kind of problems? What solutions are available? What´s the best software for conversion (quality/speed)? All ideas on this subjects are important for me and i believe for many other fellow videomakers in your foruns. Thanks for your help.

I am looking to buy a new prosumer level camera to shoot local tourism videos and weddings and conferences. So kind of a wide-range. I also want to buy something that will be relevant and practical for several years.

I've been asking some friends for advice and one says I should stick with Sony. One says I should stick with Panasonic. One says I should get HDV. Another few says STAY AWAY FROM HDV FOREVER ITS THE DEVIL (His words, not mine).

I don't really understand the difference between HDV and DVCPro HD or what is so wrong with HDV.

I don't know if I would be okay with a $2000 camera like the Sony HDR-FX7 or if I should go all out and look for a used HVX200 kit.

I also don't know if I should look only at flash drive cameras or tape cameras.

The HVX200 looks so practical because it records to P2 cards *or* tape *or* a firestore drive. Some of the kits I've been looking at include some P2 cards and even firestore drives.

But would it be more economical/practical to just go with a traditional tape camera?

I DON'T KNOW and feel so overwhelmed. I would appreciate honest feedback if anyone can help me. Thank you!

Hello,

I'm looking for a prosumer HD camera to film indoors interviews, product shots, and people at work in the office/lab. I have a light kit but would like a camera that works well in low light so I can get good around the office shots. My output is to youtube/web and occasionally to a projector in a meeting. I want to be able to do depth of field and manual focus. I am considering the Sony HDR-FX7, do I need to be concerned with the CMOS/CCD debate for my application? Any other suggestions? My budget is ~$1K-2.2K

Upgraded last year to a Canon HF100. I love the ability to just copy the video files to the computer and back them up.
Got a Samsung Blu Ray player last month and have enjoyed making AVCHD DVD's.
I have a ton of HDV tapes from a Canon HV10 and not sure how to best archive the HD video and also play them on a Blu Ray player. I imported some of the HDV to Sony Vegas 9 and it looks like it converted it to AVCHD format??? It looks good. I also need to figure out how to author a AVCHD disk from Vegas. The canon software ImageMixer 3 does it automatically for my HF100 footage.

I had heard I can write 20min of native HDV to a DVD-R that will play in Blu Ray player? Which software package is best? I have Neuro 9, Vegas 9, and pinnacle studio plus 12 - with little experience in any of them. So should I try to perserve the native HDV or convert to AVCHD?

Right now just archiving and basic HDTV playback are my concerns. No time to edit the footage.Â

Also I have heard some Blu Ray players will play camcorder AVCHD with out authoring a disk. Just burn the video files stright to a DVD-R. This that true? And what brand Blu Ray players do that? I thought I should goto Best Buy and try out multiple players.

Thanks

I spent a fortune on this tripod that "claimed" to be a fluid head, but from where i stand, its not, and will never be in a million years.

Soooo

I was wondering if i could buy a fluid head and just pop it on top of my fancy carbon fiber tripod. I know that you can replace the head because i have taken it off before. but now im wondering if i can just buy a new tripod head like the Manfrotto 701HDV compact fluid head and just screw it on there or is it more complicated than that?

Ever since video began to compete with film for the dollars of Indy filmmakers, film afficionados have always argued that video was inferior because it's high framerate 29.97 and lack of selective focus makes it look too 'real'. Well for those who would like to know the real info on 24p here's an explanation of the framerate and how it works in video from Videopia.

The goal of this guide is to provide you with a general foundation of
knowledge about each of the most popular HD formats, so that you can
use this information as part of your decision. It is not a technical
manual. I am going to do my best to avoid tech speak and keep it in
simple to understand terms.

This guide was NOT written to help you choose a specific camcorder. For
that our best advice is to go to your local store and check them out.
Talk to your friends/ colleagues who are already shooting HD and ask
them what they like best and least about their camcorder. If you can,
try to borrow it and try it yourself. If you already have an HD
camcorder, this guide will help you better understand the format you
have, and itâ??s pluses and minuses for post production.

HD is not DV
This is a very important fact you need to understand and appreciate.
Editing DV footage is a breeze. Even with a four year old computer itâ??s
a piece of cake. You donâ??t need a ton of processing power or storage.
You donâ??t need special hardware and the workflow of importing DV
footage into your computer via FireWire (or USB), editing it, encoding
it and then burning it to DVD or publishing it on the web is easy.

Unfortunately working with HD footage isnâ??t that simple, and each HD
format has itâ??s own unique workflow that can require special settings,
plug-ins, work arounds and even hardware. Donâ??t let that scare you
away. By the end of this article you will have a solid understanding of
each HD format and a bunch of suggested workflows and solutions.

Hello,

Would love some pro advice. I'm shooting on a Canon XH A1 but using miniDV tapes in the camera to save budget. However, the HDV camera is borrowed and I can't use it to screen and digitize my footage. When I try to play one of the miniDV tapes on my miniDV camera, Sony TRV900 (a prosumer camera) it does not play. The timecode doesn't even register.

Please help! Thanks so much!

Hey all,

Was wondering if I could get some help here. I captured HDV footage to Premiere CS3 with a Sony camera. Project settings at HDV 1080i playing at 29.97 fps and 1440x1080. I'm trying to export it to Vimeo at 1280x720 using the H.264 file format. The problem is once it's exported the footage is very jumpy like it's skipping frames. I've tried playing around with different settings but can't get away from the jumpiness. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi all, I recently bought a JVC GY-HD110u for my primary camera and already have a Canon HF10 AVCHD camera that will be used mostly for wide shots and b-roll. My question is: now that my main camera is running tape, I am considering selling the canon to buy maybe an hv30 or some other consumer grade HDV format camera so that I don't have to pull the monster JVC out every time I need to capture. Would this be a reasonable move or would I be better off keeping the HF10 and buying a MiniDV VCR that I can use for capture? I am usually a fan of multitaskers over one-trick ponies, but I really love the HF10 and I can't decide which would be the better move. Obviously the HV30 would be the cheaper option since I could probably find someone to trade with, and it wouldn't really cost me much out of pocket. Also would I have to get a VCR that is meant for HD tape or would any one work since it matters mostly what the image was recorded in and not transferred? I hope my questions aren't stupid sounding but I have very little experience with tape decks.

Thanks in advance and I hope I have made sense of my querry.

Hi. It is a long story, but basically the video editing got dumped in my lap. Now I am blessed with the opportunity to sort everything out, and get up to speed as fast as possible. I still have a lot to learn, but I have some questions, and am hoping some of you old pros would please be so kind as to help me finish figuring out how to configure the computer.  I appreciate your patience and help.

I need to make 2-6 hour documentaries, with the base footage shot in an indoor studio with three point lighting.  I will be editing on a three year old Dell Precision 380 workstation with a Pentium D 930 at 3.0 GHz. I have 4GB RAM on Windows XP SP3, with the Control Panel preferences set to 'performance'. NLE is Vegas 8. Hard Drive C is twin 250GB 7200 RPM HDD's in RAID 0 that back up externally to a 1TB Seagate via Symantec BESR 8.0.  Hard Drive D is twin 1TB Seagate 7200 RPM HDD's in RAID 1. The video card is a Palit (NVidia) GeForce 8600 Super +1GB. The primary filming camera is a Sony HDR-FX1, but I will use an HDR-HC1 to feed the tape into the computer via firewire.

Here are the questions I have identified so far. I would very much appreciate any help or assistance you could give me in fine-tuning my machine.  Thank you very much for your help.

1. My main concern is the processor. Is a Pentium D 930 at 3.0 GHz capable of handling and rendering 2-6 hour films with Sony Vegas?  The Sony website (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/sysreq) gives the minimum system requirement for HDV in Vegas at 2.8 GHz, but I read somehwere that this is only the minimum system requirement, and that it is much better if your processor is significantly stronger than that, especially once the machine gets warm. I can upgrade to a 3.4 GHz processor (Pentium D 950) for about $120.00, or to a 3.6 (Pentium D 960) for about $240.00, plus grease, but my question is: is this upgrade worth the cost? Would upgrading to 3.4 or 3.6 GHz processor make the editing/rendering process more stable, and more reliable on long renders? Or is a 3.0 GHz Pentium D 'plenty' of processor even for long HDV rendering? And what are my rendering times likely to be for a 2-6 hour film?

2. A related concern is the codec.  I am told that Cineform NeoHD can convert the HDV codec to HD. It is expensive, but I am told that processors can handle HD much easier than they can handle HDV. (I am also told that it gives greater fidelity). Does anyone have experience with this? If I purchase Cineform NeoHD, would I still need/be well advised to upgrade the processor to 3.4 or 3.6 GHz? Or is a 3.0 GHz Pentium D 'lots' of processor, especially with HD (not HDV)? Â

3. My second main concern is the HDD arrays.  Instead of having C: in RAID 0 and D: in RAID 1, would it be better to put C: in RAID 1 and D: in RAID 0, and then back up the D drive externally? Either I would have to find a 2TB external drive, or else with the standard compression I could probably back up to a 1.5 TB Seagate Free Agent drive. Alternately, I could leave C: in RAID 0, and put D: in RAID 0 without too much trouble.

I should probably say that there are four internal drive bays, and I have not considered RAID 5 because I do not know how it works. I just want to make sure I have enough speed and capacity to handle HD/HDV.

4. Is the video card adequate?Â

5. Do I need any kind of a video capture card? I have just been feeding things in to the motherboard via the 1394 Firewire port. Is that good enough?

Thank you very much for your help. We used to have a budget, but not any longer. Still, it is do-or-die time, and this is my life, and I love what I do. If there is something that will make a difference, I will find a way to do it.

Norman

Hi,

I know there are a few topics asking about specs for editing HDV, so excuse me for repeating others! Anyway, I just bought myself the lovely HV30 and now need to pick up a nice new computer to edit with as my old is not quite powerful enough anymore. I've had a look about and have come up with this one http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149956

and was wondering if this would be pretty good for the job?

£600 is about the price range I have to stick to at the moment (in case anyone has any other ideas that jump into the 1000s!)

Any help would be great, as this seems to be a pretty good deal.

Oh and Hi for my first post :)

I am editing a music video where we shot a good deal of it with the audio mix sped up 100% and then filmed the band at 60 FPS, so that when played back they have that surreal, "singing and playing in real time but looks kinda slowish" feel. It's been done a billion times and I know you know what I'm talking about.

At any rate, when I right click on the clips in the timeline and choose "Speed/Duration", then drop it to 50% (with the Frame Blend option checked), it plays in the source windows at a nice, smooth speed. But, when I render the clips out, suddenly they playback WORSE, containing jerky motion and it's not at all smooth anymore.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I've tried checking off Frame Blend as well but it still looks the same; clunky when rendered. I think it's odd that it plays back so smoothly when not rendered (I'm assuming my vidcard is responsible for the video playback of unrendered clips?). Here's some critical data that might help you come up with a solution:

Shot On:Â Panasonic DVC PRO HD Camera w/ Red Rock Lens
Editing:Â Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 (licensed)
Editing Mode:Â P2 720p 60Hz DVCPROHD
Frame Size:Â 960 x 720 (16:9)
Timebase:Â 23.976 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio:Â HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.33)
Display Format: 24 fps timecode

I am planing to shoot my first music video on a JVC GY-HD100U, the music video will have a final output on DVD.  I am looking for advise as far is approaching the film motion and look, camera settings as well. I had read articles about shooting 60! to later convert to 24p, is it better than shooting straight 24p?. Also the HDV format. Can anyone post any experiences with 10801, 1080p, 720p and their respectives frame rates and quality?. I had done a test with my JVC GY-HD100U shooting at 24p, I was disappointed of the image quality, I get something like image trails, and it looks really bad.

Thanks in advance

I recently acquired a used (but in excellent condition) JVC HD100U. Everything seems to work fine on the camera, but the problem I (and apparently half the people who own this type of camera) have is that I cannot capture 720 24p HDV footage in ANY NLE program.

I've been scouring the internet for a solution to the problem... I currently use Final Cut Pro 6.0, which has no problem recognizing the HD100 when it's set to DV mode, but when set to 24p it simply cannot even find the camera.

Being lucky enough to have several friends with PC's, I tried my luck with Sony Vegas 8. That too failed to recognize the camera.

I've tried numerous workarounds (neither HDVxDV nor DVHSCap recognizes the camera either), but nothing seems to work. I'd assume that the Firewire port on the camera was malfunctioning if it weren't for the fact that it works fine in DV mode...

Again, it seems bizarre that instead of failing to import footage properly (dropped frames, lack of timecode, etc.), no NLE will even see that my camera is connected.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Is there some setting on the camera for outputting HDV that I need to change?
