Your right Leandro, is more convenient to buy a Blackmagic Intensity. The extra computer will be exclusively for capturing the footage, in your studio or home. In my case I have an old Pentium 4 Windows desktop computer just for capturing footage or for any Windows program (I'm a Mac user). I got it for free from a family member and use it on several occasions. I suggest to first look around if you can find an old computer with firewire for free or really cheap (from friends or family), if not you should get Blackmagic's Intensity. Everything in the video world is expensive, you need to consider the "guerrilla" solutions before investing your money. If it works, why not use it?

Thanks for the ideas and all the help guys.
But I don't get it. how can the old used pc laptop with a firewire port is a good investment?
I mean, why spend money to buy an extra laptop in the first place?
I find it way cheaper and more convenient just to pay for the Blackmagic.
plus it's easier to just carry one laptop and this small adaptor, instead of two laptops.
Just my opinion, if there is another reason that I didn't get please feel free to tell me.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it

Glad to be helpful (though keep in mind that the HDMI on your laptop is out only... it'd be great if there were an HDMI in option!). I third an older machine for capture, even an older, inexpensive duo or quad core would do the trick.

Blackmagic Intensity will work for what you want and for many other things in the future, so is a good investment. The idea cfxcorp mentioned about looking for a used computer with firewire is an excellent suggestion. Maybe if you ask around your family members or friends you can get one for free.

Looks like it will work, but do you have to transfer in normal playback speed since it will capture the stream from the HDMI port? Over time I think you will wish that you put the money toward the purchase of a new PC or notebook.

Have you considered buying a used notebook with a Firewire port and transfer to an attached external hard drive which can be easily connected to your editing PC?

The short answer is, no. There are cables that claim to do it, but they are a waste of money (the architecture is radically different between USB and FW). Maybe something like Blackmagic's Intensity Shuttle might work- does your camera have HDMI out? If so, you may be able to do HDMI through the Shuttle to USB 3.0 in... it might be worth talking with them to see.

I am looking to buy a new prosumer level camera to shoot local tourism videos and weddings and conferences. So kind of a wide-range. I also want to buy something that will be relevant and practical for several years.

I've been asking some friends for advice and one says I should stick with Sony. One says I should stick with Panasonic. One says I should get HDV. Another few says STAY AWAY FROM HDV FOREVER ITS THE DEVIL (His words, not mine).

I don't really understand the difference between HDV and DVCPro HD or what is so wrong with HDV.

I don't know if I would be okay with a $2000 camera like the Sony HDR-FX7 or if I should go all out and look for a used HVX200 kit.

I also don't know if I should look only at flash drive cameras or tape cameras.

The HVX200 looks so practical because it records to P2 cards *or* tape *or* a firestore drive. Some of the kits I've been looking at include some P2 cards and even firestore drives.

But would it be more economical/practical to just go with a traditional tape camera?

I DON'T KNOW and feel so overwhelmed. I would appreciate honest feedback if anyone can help me. Thank you!

Also realize that the Canon EOS 7D is a still picture camera. I haven't heard anyone complain about the SLR's "professional" video capabilities, but the very fact that it's not a "video camcorder" makes it seem like a blind shot in the dark. Not saying that the SLR camera produces poor-quality video, but if you're not also a prime photographer, than purchasing this camera won't be that much worth the money. It does have great features in terms of resolution and lens interchangeability, but at your level, I wouldn't aim at something that is primarily photo that claims to excel greatly in video. The video quality is good, but probably won't beat most camcorders in the $1,500 range.

BTW, I forgot to mention that the XHA1 does not have lens interchageability. If 35mm lens (and your budget) is a MUST, then I'd go for the Canon SLR camera.

"I want to be able to do depth of field............My budget is ~$1K-2.2K"

I'm afraid you may be dissapointed with the depth of field of most, if not all prosumer cameras by themselves. Most need to have a 35mm lens adapter that will allow you to use 35mm lenses to achieve that professional film like depth of field....a good adapter will run around $1800.

if your budget is only 2.2k, I think it may be wise to seriously consider something like the Cannon EOS 7D especially if you want to take advantage of the depth of field of a 35 mm lens......I think it will work great for what you want to do...being able to use 35 mm lenses makes a world a difference and these DSLR cameras make it possible at a fraction of the cost...Eventhough they have some limitations, they produce some pretty impressive professional HD video images.

Personally, I'd go with the Canon HF S10 at this point. My only complaint is the rolling shutter of the CMOS sensor. The Canon XHA1 is closer to the pro/prosumer technology realm, but considering that the HF S10 records 900 lines of horizontal resolution, it's quite a toss-up. The Canon HF S10 also utilizes the effecient, yet still young, AVCHD format. If you are out of a powerful (3.0+ GHz) computer rig, then I'd go with the XHA1 which has more professional features and better ease of editing.

Great deal on XHA1 (3-CCD camcorder) - http://store03.prostores.com/servlet/digicams4sale/the-1165/Canon-XH-dsh-A1-3CCD-HDV/Detail

HF-S10 for $200 less than MSRP - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/597440-REG/Canon_3569B001_VIXIA_HF_S100_Flash.html

Hello,

I'm looking for a prosumer HD camera to film indoors interviews, product shots, and people at work in the office/lab. I have a light kit but would like a camera that works well in low light so I can get good around the office shots. My output is to youtube/web and occasionally to a projector in a meeting. I want to be able to do depth of field and manual focus. I am considering the Sony HDR-FX7, do I need to be concerned with the CMOS/CCD debate for my application? Any other suggestions? My budget is ~$1K-2.2K

Yes, it is a great mic for the price. Remember the secret to great audio is not the price of your mics: it is where you place them. Or where you can place them.

I also have one that i've been using on my FX1 for the past 3 years! it's great the shock mount helps iliminate noise coming from the camera. as a rule I change the 9v battery every shoot

Hey guys! I have a Sony HDR-FX7 camera and it doesn't have any XLR inputs in it, it only has a mini plug. I've been looking at the Rode Videomic, and I'm receiving good feedback from it. How about you guys? Do you think that it's a good mic for my camera? And it's only $150 compared to other microphones out there.

http://usa.rodemic.com/microphone.php?product=VideoMic

Tell me what you think! Thanks!

BTW.. They also said that it was use for Paranormal Activity..
