I am looking for a camcorder to record my son's high school basketball games. Here are some of the features I'm looking for: a) wide angle lens; b) that takes good quality videos in low light; c) records in HD; d)) records onto a card and/or internal memory; e) a large, easy to see LCD; f) a relatively big camera for my big hands; and g) less than $2k. What do you pros and serious amateurs recommend, please?

Thanks in advance. Charles.

I've seen recommends for pixel sizes for still photos imported into HD video, but not the PPI. So if I import a still photo in Premiere at around 1980 x 1200 or so, what PPI? 72? 300?

I have recently been hired for my first gig to actually make money using my camera. I am going to be recording a series of interviews, roughly 12 hours of footage in total. So what I am curious is how many hours of footage can I shoot onto a 32 gig card at 1920 x 1080 at 24 fps with my canon 550d?

I am new to videography, but I am about to embark on a career in it.

I have not had to do this yet, but as I get more into event recording I am sure I will have to deliver HD video. It seems to me that burning Blu-Ray is very expensive. I have seen videographers put the files on Flash Drives and deliver them that way, I wanted to know how people in this forum are delivering finished HD content to clients, and what one would charge.

I need to purchase a low end prosumer camera for shooting music instruction videos. Currently looking at the Panasonic AG-HMC80 or Canon XA10. Videos will be watched either online as streaming, or perhaps downloadable products. I like to have XLR audio inputs for channels 1 and 2 to split the audio. I'm currently using a Panasonic AG-DVC80 and have been very happy with it over the years. Any suggestions as to which camera I should go for? Or perhaps a different one altogether?

I have a consumer grade Panasonic PV-GS90P camcorder. One of the setup options on it is aspect ratio 16:9 or 4:3. I've always had it set on 4:3 and always had standard definition televisions in the house. We now have two high definition TVs. Is there any pluses or minuses to changing the aspect ratio to 16:9? Am I taking the same number of pixels and spreading them out? This is a newbie question but that's how guys like me learn. From the pros.

Hey everybody, I'm brand new! Like many before me, I'm sure, I come with a problem. I bought a Panasonic Lumix GH2, which shoots pretty great video (a little choppy, but hey, I can live with it) the trouble is getting that video online in any kind of quality. In my line of work I also need to record audio seperately and sync afterwards. I've been working with Final Cut express, imovie 09 and imovie HD. Imovie HD puts out a great quality video, but youtube and vimeo can't seem to understand it.

If someone knows the secret key to getting HD video out of my computer and up on the interwebs, I would be much obliged :)

Hello, Any Vegas expert out there that can help me out. All I want is to burn my edited (simple title, transition) AVCHD files to a regular DVD disc and keep the 1920x1080 resolution.

I've been pulling my hair tying to figure this out. DVD Architect doesn't seem to support HD resolution, as it always wants to resample my video to DVD resolution. The closest thing I came to a solution is to click "make movie" >"Burn it to a DVD, Blu-ray disc, or CD. > "Blu-ray disc". I tried both video format, and the program was able to burn without errors. While I can play the DVD on my PC (stutter and all), my PS3 doesn't seem to see it as a "movie" disc, but instead a DATA disc.

That said, it wont play the disc automatically. I can go through the folder, and into to the "Stream" folder. I can click the file there, and it will play, but that doesn't seem right. Oh, and there are only two choice for burn speed (1.0x, and 2.0x) instead of the actual 24.0x speed. Anyway, please advise. I was using pinnacle studio 12 prior to Vegas, and I believe Pinnacle can burn full HD content on a regular DVD without a problem. If only Pinnacle can handle AVCHD files without begging for mercy (even on my Quad system).

I'm really liking Vegas, and will probably switch, but I'm getting frustrated about this particular issue. I'm pretty sure there's a away (short of getting the PRO version, which I really don't need), someone just need to point me in the right direction.

Thank you in advance.

Hey,

So I'm soon to buy my first prosumer camcorder (looking at the Canon XH A1) and am trying to work out what to do about recording footage. I apologise if these issues have been raised elsewhere (I couldn't find the specifics I'm looking for) or if they're dumb questions, but I'd really appreciate some advice. It seems the XHA1 records video to either mini-DV tapes or a DTE drive. Seeing as DTE drives seem to be extremely expensive (to me anyways), I'm looking more toward mini-DV and then transferring it for editing via firewire. However, I've read that doing this can wear the heads of the camera. Is this true? How quickly and how much damage does it do? Is it repairable? Are there any better solutions, like an external mini-DV player of some kind that could be used for firewire transfer instead?

One last question: what do you think are the best type and brands of mini-DV tapes for recording HD? Is the cost difference between standard and HD tape really worth it? We're trying to make our independent feature as professional-looking as possible but on a pretty limited budget, so are investing in the most important quality mark areas (some purchase, some rental). I don't want to go to all the effort of getting good footage only for it to be ruined by crappy media.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

I've recently set up a film club at my high school, but we have no equipment. I've always experimented with my own films on an HD Aiptek camcorder, but it's definitely not enough.. I don't have any defined experience in the area and I have no idea what camera to get. As of right now, our budget is $1500. We're working on some fundraising, but some money needs to go into good mics and lighting. So unless I come up with something fantastic for a bit more, my limit is $1500. I'm hoping for a professional appearance in the videos we produce.

I do independent low budget productions, mainly for independent DVD releases of so called "industrial videos" and also live recording of dance and other performing arts.

Now I am using HDV, which up to know if perfect for me: relative low cost equipment, good quality image specially with good lighting, easy raw material archiving (tapes) . The SONYs Z1 are just perfect for what I do. Also in my country, many low budget movies are filmed in HDV.

However, I realize that HDV is a dying format, but really don´t know which is going to be it replacement. SONYs XDCAM is another level, too expensive.

Is AVCHD the way to go? Which do you think is or will be the new "all-terrain" SONY Z1 of this new era?

For serious consumer/prosumer standpoint, which camera would be worth considering? For eg.,
the CANON HV30/40 (HDV)has been the choice of enthusiast and cinema students for a long time.

We are speaking of low budget/good quality HD.

Hi Guys

When I bought the Z1 a few years ago I believed it was HD broadcast quality (my belief supported by some broadcast companies using it in documentary production). Now I've read other reports that say it's HDV is not acceptable for full broadcast if I submitted a film captured on the Z1. Can anyone enlighten me?

I am looking to purchase a camcorder, and I am wondering what others think about the HD vs SD dilemma, especially with regards to wildlife subjects. I am an aspiring wildlife filmmaker and so far have shot all of my footage in HD (on a Sony FX1 and Canon XHA1). I am happy with the quality of the footage I shot on these cameras, but for wildlife filming longer lenses would obviously be a benefit. Here is a link to my showreel if you would like to see some of my footage: EXAMPLE FOOTAGE. Since I just graduated from college and those cameras belonged to my school, I now find myself without a camera.

I have done a lot of reading on choosing cameras in books and on forums, and I believe I have a pretty good handle on the costs and benefits of both HD and SD for wildlife, and in general. I know that interchangeable lenses are often considered a necessity for wildlife work, and as I have a knowledge of lenses and multi-lens setups I feel that I am ready to handle this type of setup. I know it adds a lot of cost, weight, etc, but again, for wildlife it seems like more of a necessity than perhaps in other film genres. Because of this I have been considering the Canon XL2.

On the other hand, I know that the wildlife film industry, and all video in general, is quickly transitioning to HD. I love the quality and resolution I was able to obtain using the FX1 and XHA1, but I just didn't get the magnification I need to film many subjects. While I could get close enough to woodchucks (within 10ft) to get decent close-ups, I can't get this close to a fox, deer, bear, etc. I am working on a budget, and so I can't afford something like the Canon XLH1 at this point, and so any HD camera I purchase would not offer interchangeable lenses.

At this point my main goal is NOT to produce lots of footage to sell to anyone, but to improve my reel with effective sequences of behavior so that I can show that I am able to shoot for sequence-editing and will subsequently be noticed by producers.

Is a camera like the XL2 good enough for this purpose? Or do I absolutely NEED HD footage in order to compete in today's HD world, even in terms of my showreel? Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all. I hope this is posted in the right area.

I'm looking for some feedback regarding a camcorder that I will use for indoor shooting of a music performance that will eventually be streamed online. I want to shoot HD at 60p and was looking for a camcorder that would record decent 720p HD since that's probably the end resolution that I will try to stream.

I was originally looking at the Samsung HMX-H200 vs the Sony HDR-CX110. The Samsung records in typical mp4 (H.264) format whereas the Sony records in AVCHD. The Sony records in 1080i, but I didn't really want to deal with interlaced video, so I opted for the Samsung so I could record full 720p 60fps. However, these are both last year's models and this year Samsung has similar specs with the HMX-H300, but Sony threw me a curve ball with the HDR-CX130, which now shoots full 1080p video at 60fps. In my tests with the Samsung HMX-H200, in low light settings I saw more noise with 720 vs 1080, but in very well lit scenes, I couldn't tell much of a difference on my 21.5 inch monitor between 720 and 1080. That said, for my music performance shoot I will have plenty of light, so my question is should I just stick with the Samsung and record 720p 60fps if 720p is my target resolution for streaming this video on the web anyway? Or should I get the newer Sony and record at full 1080p and convert it to 720p in post? I've heard if you record higher quality from the beginning, your results will be better, even if converting to a lower resolution. Also, I've read that the bit rate that AVCHD records at is higher and therefore yields higher quality. But will this higher quality codec and higher resolution even be noticed when compared to 720p footage?

Anyway, I'm at a point where I need to make a decision. I'm weighing the practicality of the Samsung with the possibility of added quality of the Sony at the higher resolution. I just don't know if I'll see that quality if I'm compressing my video for web streaming anyway. Any help would be appreciated, and if you have other camcorder ideas, feel free to mention those as well. Sorry for the book, kind of a simple yet loaded question. Thanks in advance!

I record dance recitals and produce 16:9 DVDs. Since I need to end up with SD16:9 video to edit in FCE, would I get better quality recording in SD 16:9 or HD and outputting as SD 16:9 from my XHA1?

navyspecwarfare on "Sony Vegas Project Template vs. Render"

So, sometimes I am a bit confused about the difference between setting up the Sony Vegas template vs. the render settings.

I am assuming that the template is supposed to match my media. In other words, if I shot in HD, I should make sure my template matches those HD settings. If I shot in SD, I should make sure the template matches that such as NTSC DV 720x480.

I am also assuming that you just render to whatever media you want your final project on.

So, in my case, I have footage shot in HD. I want to edit it in Vegas, yet I want to have the option to output it to both HD Bluray and SD DVD.

Is it as simple as me just setting up the template in HD, then choosing to render as either HD for BluRay or SD for DVD? Setting up the template in HD for editing but then rendering to SD will not cause issues will it?!

Many thanks.

Orpheus on "Canon 7D or videocamera? HD or SD? AVCHD Editing problems? Worth it? Opinions?!"

**If you have an opinion on anything I discuss, please post below because every "vote" counts in my decisions going forward.**

My Goal: To shoot small / short film projects to upload to the internet and burn to DVD. (I would also like to do some still photography on the side, whether it is with the camera I buy or a separate still camera---this is factoring into my decision somewhat, but I want to focus on video.)

Note: I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (the production package with after effects, etc..)

Do I buy a 7D? Price vs performance seems tempting, but many people have problems editing AVCHD and I don't have CS5 with the Mercury Playback Engine. (I am buying a new computer soon, which I will make sure has the capability to edit HD, but is that worth it since I plan to output to DVD and the internet?) All of the codecs and conversions don't seem worth the effort depending on where my footage is going to end up...should I stick with Standard Definition? (The videocamera I have now is standard definition: Panasonic DVX100)

I would like creative options, and being able to change lenses seems like more creative options. Also, my projects will mostly be small indie-film-like projects, so I won't really be doing live events.

The downside to 7D is that there are many accessories that will add up if I want to use it primarily for video? Would I be better off putting that money into a videocamera from the start?

I can always buy a separate still camera that takes great pictures to have alongside a videocamera.

OR

That brings us to my second option: Do I buy an HD videocamera? After I get my new computer, I would love to have great looking footage, but since I am only going to be outputting it to DVD in the end, does HD matter? How much better does it look than SD on DVD? People want video on the internet to load really fast these days, and if I shoot HD and upload HD, sure they have the HD option, but I would guess the majority just watch it Low Resolution anyways.

So, that brings us to the big finale: What to do? The Panasonic AG-AF100 is 5,000 dollars and out of my budget. The 7D is within reach, but has lots of drawbacks. An HD prosumer videocamera might take a bit more time to save up for, BUT is it the right way to go if I want to focus on video? Then again, I can take still photographs anytime to practice photography, with some video projects on the side when friends are available to help.

**Please feel free to join in with your opinion on what you would do in this situation, and explain WHY? What things would make you lean towards one option over the other?

Thank you for your opinion!

<p class="post">

When I drop my AVCHD .mts clips from my Canon HF10
camera into Sony Vegas Platinum
(consumer version), and then use the make DVD wizard, it renders and
then sends my media files to DVD architect 4.5 and then burns my DVD to
look spectacular. This is fantastic because my project I'm working on
is going on
4.7GB DVDs for commercial DVD players or computers. I simply shot in HD
because I wanted the option in the future to burn to Blu-ray, but won't
be doing that as of yet.

I don't want to use Sony Vegas Platinum though....I want more
advanced options and more options later for BluRay, etc etc etc and thus
need to edit, render, send the edited/rendered files to DVD architect
pro 5.0, and then burn to DVD using Sony Vegas Pro, not Platinum.

Sony Vegas Pro does not have this streamlined "make DVD" option like
the nice consumer version does.
After editing in Vegas Pro, I have to manually render my project using
the plethora
of options available, which honestly, I don't know much about. I've
tried rendering using NTSC widescreen for DVD architect (MPEG-2), I've
tried HDV with high settings, etc etc etc and when I drop these rendered
files into DVD Architect, they don't turn out well quality-wise like
they did in Sony Vegas Platinum using the automatic make DVD settings.Â
I
simply want to render these edited .mts files to a format that DVD
architect will like and then burn in high quality so my DVDs look good
on any DVD player with a standard monitor or HD monitor. Vegas
Platinum
does a great job, but it's unknown to me what it is doing behind the
scenes to render my files before it sends them off to DVD architect.
Obviously it works great given my test with Vegas Platinum and native
.mts files, but I have no idea what Vegas Platinum is doing to convert
or render these editing .mts files to make them still high quality and
smooth for DVD architect. I just need to know how to replicate this
process manually in Vegas Pro and I'm set.

So to recap, and in a nutshell, I need to know what render settings
to choose in Vegas Pro after editing my .mts files natively so I can
then send them over to DVD architect pro 5.0 and burn my project to a
DVD without loss of visual quality.

Any help greatly appreciated.

So here goes...

I shot an immense amount of footage in AVCHD from a Canon prosumer Vixia. Have 1920 x 1080 .MTS files that now need editing.

Here is the deal though...

I originally shot it in HD, need to first release it in SD due to media prices, but then want the option to release it in HD later when blu-ray discs go down in price. Need to know how to set-up the templates properly in Sony Vegas Pro as well as monitors for editing. A bit confusing for me since I shot in HD, need to edit it but then output to SD, but then need to output in future to HD.

My questions are as follows:

1.

How should I set-up the Sony Vegas Pro template for my project and for color correction? Should I set it up as 1920 x 1080i HD even though it is going out first to standard definition 720 x 480? Or should I set up the template as 720 x 480 standard NTSC? How will the final decision affect future desires to output to Blu-ray as high definition?

2.

How should I set up the monitors for color correction? Should I set up a CRT via firewire so that I can see what it looks like on a standard definition CRT? Or should I output to a 1920 x 1080 LCD computer monitor? Or both? Will color correcting in one format (HD) make it look funky in another format (SD) and vice-versa?

What to recommend since I originally shot it in HD, need to first release it in SD, but then want the option to release it in HD later?

Many thanks for the help; in the gurus I trust!

I have not yet seen any comparisons between these two cameras. I know, they're both brand new on the market and there hasn't been much time to do a real in-depth analysis. So without having them in my hands, here are just a small sampling of the differences I've seen online that might tip the scales toward one or the other:

Price...
Sony: about two grand
Canon: about two grand

Interchangeable lenses...
Canon: Nope
Sony: Yup

Mic inputs...
Canon: 2 XLR's
Sony: single stereo 1/8" jack

On-board microphone...
Canon: Nope, but there's a mount + individual audio controls
Sony: Yup, that awesome 4-pod thingy

Kit lens...
Sony: 18-200mm
Canon: "35mm equivalent of" 30.4mm - 304mm

Still photo capability...
Sony: JPG, 14.6 megapixel
Canon: nope

Anybody been able to test both of these side-by-side yet?
