Mark,

First, what do you mean when you say, "I set the output to H.264?" Are you changing the Compressor setting of the timeline in FCP, or are you going to Quicktime conversion and choosing H.264 compression? If you're changing your timeline Compressor, that's wrong. Keep that at ProRes422.

Second, don't even use Quicktime Conversion. Export a Master by going to File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Make sure you're exporting at Current Settings and the Make Movie Self-Contained option is check marked. Then bring your Master into Compressor to create your H.264 and MPEG files. Compressor will do a better job.

Also, you didn't explain your H.264 settings...

Mark,

I take my m2ts clips, archive them 'as-shot', then make a conversion to the PAL equivalent of your format (720 x 576) in mpg2 of good quality. I am not familiar with the procedure to be followed in Apple's 'Final Cut', because I do not use it. A great deal depends upon the quality of 'codecs', (I use 'Main Concept') and what settings you employ. For example I have reduced my GOP's to twelve, from the default fifteen. Taken overall, that sometimes gives your clips an 'edge', because of the increased density of the all-important 'I-frames'. Within mpg2, itself, I tweak everything up close to the upper-limits permitted by the DVD-Standard. That makes for somewhat larger files and longer processing-times, but pays dividends in the quality of the finished product. My philosophy is that having my footage, for editing, available as good-quality mpg2 saves a lot of hassles and permits a very direct route to disc. But, some purists might not agree with that, with (say) my bit-rate of 9200, for example, as standard. There is another school of thought which regards hoisting the rate above 7000, as a waste-of-time, just the same as there are those who say that you cannot 'improve' on 'ffmpeg' as a codec. What I do know, is that I am quite happy with the comparatively minor amount of the original m2ts image-quality which has to be sacrificed on the way to DVD. None of this addresses your problem, directly, but some of it may be helpful.

I take my ,mts files and throw them into Toast converting them to Apple ProRes 422, to edit into Final Cut Pro 7. I will edit my piece, then using Quicktime conversion in FCP, I set the output to usually h.264, and the size sometimes to 720x480, 16:9 since I seldom need pure HD, and export it to my external hard drive. If I compress I use MPEG Streamclip, but I don't usually compress all that much since I editing short pieces mostly.

I am having some trouble with codecs and compression when I am outputting in Final Cut Pro Studio 7.

I transfer all my .mts files to Apple ProRes 422, and proceed to edit. When I am done with the edit and ready to output, I generally select h.264 but sometimes I use Mpeg 4. When I output my video looks a little pixelated and not near as sharp as others that use h.264. I might be overlooking a setting when I export, hence the question here in the forum.

I wish I could be a little more specific, but apparently, this is the only way I get responses. It's about web players in specification to their formats, so I could have just titled it "mac vs. pc" (which is what I'm going to try next time). I am unable to save WMV files in Vegas Pro without getting a dropout, so all of my luck seems to be going H.264.

I can watch H.264 files through web pages on my PC through Explorer 8, but am unable to make them buffer when watching online. NO MESSAGE... JUST A WAIT OF TWO HOURS IN ORDER TO GET THE QUICKTIME LOGO TO DISAPPEAR AND PLAY. Bottom line IS THAT IT WON'T STREAM AT ALL - just a strenuous download. How do I get the h.264 video online embedded (or configure QuickTime) where it is actually able to stream? This is not intended to be a 55-hour discussion, or comment that gets nothing at all. I just want an answer.

I was under the impression that 1440 X 1080 was for HDV which uses an anamorphic pixel so when viewed in comes out 1920 X 1080 (like CinemaScope).

Just set your properties to NTSC DV Widescreen (720 X 480) and modify the size on render.

For MP4 or MOV containers (using H.264 codec) the target in either computer or web playback, so if you just adjusted the size of the output to 720 wide using 16:9 screen ratio (720 X 406) still using 1.0 for your pixel ratio it should work fine.

But before shooting in HD, have you ever been successful getting QuickTime to play 720x480 files in widescreen format? 1920x1080 is a native widescreen resolution - you get widescreen video out of 1920 by 1080 square pixels. 1440x1080 you don't, which QuickTime's given me trouble with that also.

I'm still confused about where the problem is - QuickTime or export. If nothing else, I'll save 852x480, but I'd rather keep it 720x480 for the web.

Time and again (or maybe it was only once), I've tried exporting H.264 (AVC) format in widescreen using Sony Vegas Pro 9. When I playback video in QuickTime, the video is always 4:3 - no letterboxing, just a squish from 16:9 to 4:3. Is '1.3' the correct 'pixel aspect ratio' for exporting H.264 in widescreen, or is this a limitation of the player version I am using? If not, how do I export H.264 video in widescreen?

I've never been able to successfully view widescreen video in QuickTime before, even with the assurance of DV-AVI video that I know is widescreen.

I suggest you convert and burn your video files to AVCHD. All the blu-ray player (including PS3) can play AVCHD disc directly as a blu-ray disc. And AVCHD supports 1920x1080 also.

I often use total video converter to make this conversion.

The PS3 surely can playback h264 video + ac3 or DTS. To achieve this
you have to mux the h264 elementary video stream and the ac3 or DTS
sound track into an MPEG2 Transport stream.

The BluRay-compliant MPEG2 transport stream output from Adobe CS3
encore is directly playable on the PS3 with 5.1 audio also from the XMB
(if transferred to the internal harddrive on the PS3 ) or streamed from
a UPNP server like for instance TVersity. The file is also seekable
using FF/REW both when playing from the PS3 harddrive or when streaming
from for instance TVersity.
(do remember to rename the file produced from .m2ts to .mpg though before transferring to the PS3 )

.mov is the extension for a Quicktime file. To produce that the following steps should help.

step 1: Choose File>Export>Media

step 2: In the Export Settings dialog box chose Quicktime from the Format pull-down menu at the top of the dialog box.

step 3: Click on the Video tab at the bottom of the dialog box. In the Codec pull-down menu choose h.264.

Most of the time I export to FLV/FL4V in PP-CS4 and that works pretty well. Even so there are so many options in the preset category that I keep trying different ones. I upload to TubeMogul.com that does some transcoding and crossposting to a variety of server sites, so I don't need to worry much about the specifics.

But - I'm not really happy with the quality of the viewing on some of the sites.

Question 1 - is there a preferred/best Format/Preset for Youtube HD?

Question 2 - I've been asked to provide H.264 with .MOV container. I can't seem to find an option for .MOV output. There are several iPod output presets, but nothing that creates a .MOV file. They all create .mp4 extensions.

Confused....

I am looking to create an Internet TV Channel for a customer. We are producing all the video material and plan to enconde new and existing videos to FLV and H.264. Today I received an E-Mail offering the "Simple Web TV" hosted software http://www.simple-webtv.com for creating video portals and WebTVs. Does anybody know anything about it?

Thanks.

H.264 codec provides high video quality at substantially lower bit rate, and is most popular for its use on HD DVD, Blu -ray disc. It requires fast CPU and lots of RAM to play it. Your portable player may not have the fastest CPU to support the nice playback of most H.264 files, so I suggest when editing your video in Premiere Pro, you'd better choose lower bitrate.

I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro and rendered an hour long video in both H.264 and MPEG4. When played in a PS3, the H264 played for about 20 minutes then started getting jerky; became un-watchable. The MPEG4 copy worked fine.

I've never had much sucess with H.264 - either in rendering, and now in playing the DVD.

Anyone have any suggestions on other settings with H264, like frame rate?

famering on "An Alternative to ACDSEE on H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2 video browsing and managing?"

Today, I was cleaning up files on an old hard disk. In it, I met again many softwares I used to be using during last decade. ACDSEE, PHOTOSHOP, ULTRA EDITOR and many others, some of them are still my favorite tools today.

Watch the Windows Vista I am using now, what a similar looking between the explorer and the old ACDSEE classic. The so called thumbnail-view layout, which I first saw in ACDSEE classic, is nowadays a most common user interface standard.

Thumbnail-view is not the only strong point that ACDSEE holds.
ACDSEE is still the best when the image browsing speed is measured. That's why I am still using ACDSEE as my picture browser, although the Windows now can do it natively(but slowly). This shows, there is always a chance to survive for an unique technology, like the image browsing speed of ACDSEE.

On the contrary, when we turn to the speed of video browsing, ACDSEE falls into the common category of DirectShow filter based applications. ACDSEE does not decode video itself, so its video browsing speed is limited by the DirectShow.

This gave an opportunity to the video manager I am using now, the Smart Mate for DV and DVB.

Based on special video technology from FameRing, Smart Mate for DV and DVB is 20~30 times faster than DirectShow based softwares when browsing and taking thumbs of movies.

I have a Hauppauge HD PVR DVB Box with a tuner installed on PC. I've recorded about several hundreds of H.264/AVCHD movies on my hard disk. They are .ts files, aka transport stream. Every now and then, I need to organize them, search them, bookmark them, share them with my friends. Just like what I did to my Jpeg photos. Further more, I want to edit the movies, like cutting commercials out of them, this leads to the most valuable part of Smart Mate for DV and DVB. It has the world's first H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2 frame accurate cutter without re-encoding.

Smart Mate for DV and DVB not only supports frame accurate cutting on H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2, but also does it in a fastest way. It only re-encodes the gop on start point and end point, middle part of movie remains untouched. This gives the highest speed cutting while reserving highest video quality. So called, "Smart Cut".

If anyone else needs an easy but professional management solution for H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2 movies from Satellite video receiver, DVB HD PVR, DV Camcorder, or INTERNET, the Smart Mate for DV and DVB is the software you must have. FameRing also has video manager for all popular formats, called MovieShop, I was only using the version customized for H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2.

Come back to the ACDSEE, it will always be my image browsing tool, but not for the video browsing and managing.

To me, the Smart Mate for DV and DVB is an alternative to ACDSEE on video files. That is why we like competition, which gives us more and more better softwares.

May be some time later, Windows will be able to browse H.264/AVCHD/MPEG2 .ts movies natively(cuts frame accurately? I do not think so), like the thumb-nail view it learned from ACDSEE. But it will never be the only software left, because the unique technology always survives, as it is unique. The customers will always have alternative and better choices.

Yeah by default its set to AV. If you go into your menu options by hitting the Function key and scroll down to menu from there in the black screen search for AV/Headphones and select headphones. When your in AV mode you will get the buzzing sound when wearing headphones. Once you select for headphones when you go back out you will see an icon at the bottom of your lcd with a pair of headphones.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Yeah, after searching around the internet I found the page you linked to.

I usually don't use headphones while filming, but I plugged the headphones in and was surprised to hear a loud buzzing noise instead of the video audio. For me, the noise is also heard in photo and dual shot mode.

I'm probably missing a step. Will update if I find a solution to this problem.
