Some buddies and I have put together some test footage for a superhero themed project. Right now, we just shot some test footage and hoping to develop into a web series.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Howdy! A buddy and I recently shot this short. We used a green screen set up. I lit the green screen up really well, and put decent light on the subjects. In the hair and beard you can see some green bleeding through, and sometimes the green reflects off of different objects in the foreground. Subjects are about 10 feet from the screen. I'm shooting on a Panasonic HMC-150. Anybody got any suggestions to suppress green spillage? Thanks!

I am currently putting together a video segment of an afternoon's walk of several kilometres (or 'miles', if that's what you 'do' in your neck-of-the-woods). Each portion of the overall sequence of about twelve minutes duration, is introduced by a widish-angle 'panoramic' shot taken from a tripod, which shows the track to be traversed, clearly. The intention, (and it's well on the way to fulfilment, since everything 'works'), is to animate an ever-extending white-line from end to end of the walked-over landscape-shot in full-screen, indicating progress and at any one time, and, optionally, to run the corresponding video shots in a reduced-size window. The technology is perfected, and the line travels, ever-extending as the corresponding, directly-obtained shots keep pace in the smaller 'window'. Being able to run the smaller window allows me to intermix 1920 x 1080 and 720 x 576 shots without the latter appearing to be at a disadvantage. The whole effect is created by laying-out on a photograph, the same size as the finished images, the line to be traversed in 'chroma'-compatible green, which has been lightened slightly in tone, so as to be 'visible' against the true 'chroma' green of the typical green-screen process. Both greens have been selected so as to 'disappear' when the 'chroma' function is invoked. That is then selected, and 'lifted' by means of 'copy', and plonked onto a blank 'green-screen' of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It's merely then, a matter of tracing the final 'white-line', frame by frame onto the green blank, using the 'pilot' slightly-lighter line as a guide and extending the line in even steps. It works brilliantly, but for one thing. My beautiful crisp tidy 'lines' once saved as 'frames' (one to each 'step') and brought back to the screen again, at rendering-time, have pixellated badly at the edges and no-longer stand-out against the background as they were first drawn. On projection, the lovely crisp and accurate line has gone muddy, due to the numbers of pixel which are now, neither green, nor white, but somewhere in-between, and with a line only four pixels wide, that means, effectively, the entire line.

My question, then, is this: Is it possible to save this material as a series of 'unmerged' images so that the outlines remain crisp, clear and well-defined? Has anyone 'out-there' had to overcome this problem and is able to point me in the right direction? All suggestions welcome.

Hi all

I'm using a green screen setup with two fluorescent(5.5K) soft-boxes lighting a human subject and another two lighting the screen. I'm using a Sony C150X Handycam on a tripod with daylight white balance settings.

The screen is working pretty well but I'm having trouble achieving the desired effect with the subject. When I zoom in close to the subject's face, he looks very natural, however when zoomed out further, he looks washed out and too bright.

Here is a picture demonstrating the different the different effects at different zoom levels: http://i.imgur.com/3WQeM.png

Why does this happen and how can I make the subject look like he does on the left while getting more of his body in the shot.

We need Mac compatible stuff. Any ideas?

I've got a gallon of Rosco Chroma Key Green paint and now I just need the fabric to put it on.

I was planning for a green screen about eight feet tall and fifteen feet wide that would be freestanding outdoors in a soft curve. So I need to know what kind of fabric is good to paint for that.

It's for general green screen applications but for now I was thinking of wide shots of a on-location still car that would be composited into a moving background using all that green screen like a giant back-projection unit. Imagine a giant curve of green screen around a parked vehicle so that everything other then the vehicle is green. Now imagine the green replaced with a moving background image. That's what I'm moving for.

I don't even know where I could get bolts of cloth that big not ot mention if I should use shower curtain style eyelets and rings or what. Advice appreciated.

Hello all, I have a question about some green screen work I am about to start in a couple weeks.

Basically we went out and shot a group of water skiers behind a boat out on the lake and an office wants me to Photoshop all of their partners into the photo (replacing the skiers) and in a pyramid scheme. I have a green screen/lights set up that I use for film but this specific job is photography (with the Canon T2i).

I'm confident in the project even with its ridiculousness considered however I can't decide on one thing: should I do this green screen set up outside (to match the light of the original photo) or should I go ahead and light it well inside and match the original in Adobe Photoshop? I've never had problems doing that but I've seen this office's other "office photos" and they look flawless with Photoshop and everything. Thanks in advance if you can push me towards the most efficient way.

I am currently researching into what equipment to purchase to build a small (approx 5m x 3m x 3m) studio that will have green screen setup. I was just wondering what lighting people would suggest for a studio of this size. I have used Photon beard dimmable fluorescents and arri fresnels in a studio of this size that work well but they are very expensive.

i recently posted a video and got some great suggestions on how to improve, one was to shoot in front of a green screen so that the background would be more professional/interesting. i have a small budget....I would only feel comfortable spending $150 at the max - and would prefer to stay within the $50 - $100 range. But I've learned quickly what the regulars on here have repeatedly said....you get what you pay for. I am looking for an adequate green screen that I would be able to work with - i've looked at the foam backed from eefx.com and saw they have an 8x10 for about $110. I just dont know how to hang it up without buying all the extra stuff - the grommets, or rod hem..... is it not possible to hang these on any wall w/o those 'extras'?

I also looked at tubetape - but it seems the last commenter on green screens was not happy with the quality.

I've also looked at amazon and saw cowboy studio, britek, and estudio all make muslin sheets affordable - some come with the stands and lights , and some just have the 'sheet' - which i'm not sure how to hang...also, the price is cheap - which is great for my budget but makes me wonder if they would key well.

I've also looked at bhphoto - they have options of just the sheet, or the impact collapsible 5 x 7, or a $150 8x 10 muslin sheet with stand.

I had been looking at an 8x10 size because I had read that that's the minimum for full body shots - but I wondered if a 5 x 7 would be sufficient for waist-up shots? if so - that impact collapsible looks promising...but again, I'm not really sure the best/inexpensive way to hang these up. I would be transporting it each time I used it.

Any advice on which route you would take as someone who's never used one before and doesn't feel comfortable shelling out too much money?

Also - I have a large, roll down projector screen that I never use, I don't know if it is possible to rig up a chromakey green sheet so that I can attach it to the screen. The projector screen is relatively easy to hang up, and it seems like itd be easy to transport and store wrinkle free....just throwing that out there in case someone has done it before.

I went to TubeTape and purchased the Chromakey Green Muslin Backdrop 10' x 20', CK-318-1. I was very disappointed in that the color of the green screen was not sharp and crisp like my 5x7 and made it difficult to use. After shooting a few videos, I was very disappointed with the results. I contacted TubeTape and they informed me that was their standard color and recognized it was not the same as other items like green suit of which I was considering purchasing. Therefore, I returned the 10x10 green screen of which TubeTape was great to work with and gave me a full refund.

Now, I am still back to where I started. Does anyone have a any recommendations on a good large green screen?

Hello Everyone, just wanted to post a
video we just wrapped up. This video was shot on the Sony EX1 with a
teleprompter and green screen. We used various jump-backs and music to move the
video along.

This part one of a series of videos
and will be used for their website and office. Very interesting stuff on
Chiropractic care.

Hi,

I am an animator and I just recently launched virtual-studio-set.com it is a collection of backdrops that video producers can use to place behind green screen footage. All of the footage is royalty free and I am planning on adding many more backgrounds in the near future. We also do custom design and animation work, so please get in touch if there is a project you need help on. Thanks for looking,

Just a quick question. I'm trying to perfect my green screen technique however, after layering my green screened video on top of a dark background I experience a fuzz in the background video. I suppose fuzz isn't the appropriate term. It looks like broken lines running parallel all the way through the background clip. This only happens on dark backgrounds. At first I thought it was lighting issues but after verifying total light balance on the screen I'm stumped.

 Hi All,

My friend Hans and I have started collaborating on a YouTube comedy series called "Cher on Crack, Sonny is Back." There was no other reason than to do something off-the-wall and be creative about it - not just stand in front of a camera and shout like so many others do (and get millions of hits for). Not knocking that, but everyone has different interests.

Our interests are more about filming technique and post-production... a little bit of scripting and ad-libbing... and having fun with customes, props, green screen, animation, and plain silly entertainment in this angry and serious world.

This video is our 3rd in a series which started out as a green screen test at first. This week, we will be shooting Part 4 with a more defined script. Please feel free to comment here or on YouTube... preferably YouTube. The cam is a Canon XHA1. Our lighting is not yet perfected. Hans Moore does some animation as a hobby. Both of us are recent filmmakers and will be switching from Ulead to Premiere Pro soon.

Hello.

I have been reading as much as I can on greenscreen and techniques, and I watched the tutorials already. I see some other greenscreen threads out there, but I don't want to hijack anyone else's thread, and when I got too far afield on a different thread, I was advised to start a new one.

I am brand new to video editing. I am training up on Vegas Pro 8.1 and Boris RED. I am hoping to get into Adobe CS4 just as soon as I get Vegas and Boris all figured out (OK...so it may be Adobe CS5 or 6 by that time...lol). My goal is to make some lightly composited teaching and training videos for use in our organization. (I just want to composite things in order to make my points more interesting, and to make the illustrations easier to understand).

Camera is a Sony HDR-FX1 recording in HDV (1080i) with a juicedLink CX-431 pre-amplifier (to quiet the onboard Sony pre-amps). Microphone is a DPA-4088B headset connecting to the juicedLink by XLR connector with 12V phantom power. B-roll camera is Sony HDR-HC1 (which will also be used to feed in the tape).

My question here is about configuring my studio. Basically, my bedroom is going to have to double as "the studio." By 're-arranging the furniture' I can get about twelve feet in between the teleprompter and the greenscreen. Ceiling height is about ten feet. I have six Lowel Tota halogen light stands with umbrellas for diffusion. The green screen is a nice foam screen (http://www.eefx.com), so it should not give off a lot of overspill.

The light bulbs I have on hand are these:

300W EHZ 2900K
500W FCZ 3000K
750W EMD 3200K

I was advised that I should use light bulbs of the same color rating; however, I am not sure if that means 'exactly' the same color rating, or whether it just means "don't mix 5200K with 2900K." In other words, are 2900K, 3000K and 3200K 'close enough for all practical purposes'? Or would it be better to pick just one color (say, 3000K) and then make adjustments/jump through the rest of the hoops accordingly?

My green screen will be about 11-12 feet wide. Height is almost ten feet. My question is about placement of the lights, and myself, relative to the green screen. I read somewhere else that in order to get a clean key, it is best to put more light on the green screen than on you; and I also read that it is best to stay in front of the lights that light the green screen (although why, I am not so sure). My problem is that the bed limits me to about six feet away from the screen. If I am six feet away from the screen (about halfway in between the camera and green screen) then I can move freely left and right, in order to make my points. If I need to be farther away from the green screen I can still do that, but it will limit my lateral range of motion (i.e., 'cramp my style') somewhat, although not excessively.

If I can freely mix 2900K, 3000K and 3200K, then ideally I would like to place two 750W 3200K EMD's on the green screen, about four or five feet away from the screen. Then I would like to stand about six feet in front of the screen (so that I can have free range of motion left and right). If I do that, then I can use a 500W FCZ at 3000K for a key light, and perhaps a 300W EHZ at 2900K for a fill light, and then use another 300W EHZ for a back light (or even use two back lights, if I need a second one to kill any green over-spill).

First question: Will the two 750W umbrella lamps that are on the green screen provide enough peripheral lighting to kill any green over-spill from the screen, such that I only need one back-light (to make me 'pop')? Or will I need two back lights, in order to kill any green on the shoulders and hair?

Second question: Can I really freely mix 2900K and 3000K (on me), with 3200K (on the green screen)? Or do I need to re-work my setup, so that I only use 500W bulbs at 3000K?

Third question: If I have to use only one color of lamp, are the 300W EHZ's at 2900K strong enough? I do have an air conditioner in my bedroom, but this is the northern tip of California's Central Valley, and the only place that gets hotter in California is Death Valley (it got to 118 degrees F in the shade here last summer). If 300W is enough light, then I would really like to go with that; but I also do not want to compromise picture quality in any way. I know that 1080i is not as good as 1080p, but at least for right now, this is what I have.

I am just guessing that 90 percent of our views will be on the Internet, but I also want to make things available on DVD and eventually Blu-Ray (or whatever they come out with), so audio and picture quality are more important than my comfort while filming. However, if picture quality would not be compromised by the use of, say, 500W bulbs at 3000K on the green screen, and 300W bulbs at 2900K on me, that would be great.

Finally, how good is the chroma-keyer in Vegas? And does anyone know how good the chroma-keyer is, in Boris RED? Eventually, when I get to Adobe CS4 (or 5 or 6, lol), I want to make extensive use of their virtual sets, so I would use their chroma-keyer (is that correct?). I just think I need to learn Vegas as completely as I can, before I start to take on Adobe. I also understand that the keyer in the Matrox RT.X2 is superb, but I just don't have money for Adobe/Matrox just yet.

Any advice, comments or words of wisdom you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for your help.

New at some of this so please bear with me.

I have a potential client that wants to produce a video seminar in which he is standing in front of a large map. The idea is to use a chroma key background, a video mixer and a monitor so he can see the map in relation to his position similar to a wetherman. The problem I need to solve is this: he writes on the map in his actual presentation and wants to be able to do something similar in the video.

Since this is a rather low budget project, I want to use a simple mixer like the Sima SFX10, one camera for the subject against a blue screen and one camera for the map. I will then output the composit to a monitor for the subject to look at and another output to a DVR. I cannot determine what I need to allow the subject to "write" on the map.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi-

I'm shooting some green screen footage with my Canon XH-A1s, 1080i HD. The footage is going to live on the web in a Flash movie and on Youtube. I'm running After Effects CS4 on a MacPro with 16gb RAM.

I'm curious to know if anyone can suggest the best Render settings to use. I'm getting better at the deinterlacing and color correction but with all of the settings that AECS4 has I'd love to learn how others have succeeded with rendering the footage, especially with needing to put it up on Youtube and using Flash.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

I just got Vegas 9 PE for christmas, and have noticed a strage effect while working on my first project.  Every time I drag a clip with a green background onto the timeline, it seems to do an automatic, poor chromakey that makes the video dark an grainy.  When I add the chromakey effect and adjust it, I can get the video to look fine.  Is this "auto-chromakey" normal?  Is there any way to turn it off?
