I would agree with EarlC. I love my GL2 and prefer the ease of use as well and the portability. The downside for me is it is not 16:9 and that would make it perfect. With the cost of HD TV's being so low, my clients prefer to be shot with what fits their screens.

The technology, circuitry, engineering and design of the GL2 actually makes it superior to the XL1 or XL1s with the ONLY serious exception being the ability to use interchangeable lenses with the XL series. Had I known then what I know now I would have saved myself megabucks and purchased THREE GL2 units instead of one GL2 and two XL1 units because I never really NEEDED to change lenses and I never saw my way clear to purchase the very expensive alternative lens choices to do so. My GL2 is my main unit of this setup, and the XL1 units are second cam and backup. I do have to say Canon lenses are vastly superior to much of the other comparably priced SD units out there, and would even hold up well (lens quality wise) to many of the high definition choices available in a similar price range. Realizing, of course, that I'm talking about apples and oranges there.

Though I've had my GL1 for 10 years, I have never tried to import a still image saved on MiniDV. I have an old tape in which I took several stills during the video, and I'd like to import them. Now, I am not sure how it's done. Of course I know how to find the stills with the search select, but then what? iPhoto doesn't recognize the Canon as a device. I already imported all the video into iMovie, and I can see my "freeze frame" but the playback image is crappy quality so I doubt I can do anything with that. What am I missing here?

In SD environment work, stay with the GL2, not the XL models XL1, XL1S or XL2. You won't regret it. Sure, there's a boatload of opinions on "my camera is better than yours" threads, but personal experience has brought me NO regrets regarding my GL2 - cannot say the same about my pair of XL1 units.

Hello,

I was recently fortunate enough to auction off
the used gl1 at a reasonable enough price to win a gl2 and add a few
bucks to it. I'm waiting for the gl2 to arrive now. Thanks for the
advice. The jvc never came so that kind of fell in my favor as, the
no-show camcorder will pay for the price difference of the gl1/2. I
have another question however. What do you think of the XL1 as it
relates to the GL2? I know the XL2 would be ideal and that's my goal
for a camera at this point. However, because the xl1 tend to be half
the price of the xl2, I was wondering how it would compare to the GL2
model. Would it make sense to just stay with the GL2? Would a trade
to the XL1 from the GL2 actually be a downgrade? What if I were able
to have the xl1 and gl2, but still not afford the xl2? Please advise...

Thanks in advance,

OK cool. Thanks EarlC. I may be in the market for slight camera upgrade in a month or two. The camera will still be a older model like an XL2 but we'll see when the time and $$$ is right. Right now, I'll do a little bit of practicing. I figure, if I play around a little bit with what I have access to, it will let me know what I actually need, and, or I'm looking for. Thanks for the help.

I would use the GL1 if THAT and the JVC (even though it's HD) were my ONLY choices - better glass. A shame you cannot access at least a GL2, though, and try to find a way to upgrade cameras as soon as you can. Your system will handle basic editing, of course, but you may have some wait times on rendering if you do much more than cuts editing. Not that THAT's a problem as cuts are the primary tool of most commercial movies to go from scene-to-scene.

Sony makes a GL1? I thought that was Canon's nomenclature, and the Canon GL1 has been replaced (for some years now) with the GL2. I could be all wet, but I cannot find a Sony model GL1.

If it IS in fact the Canon GL1 (preferably GL2) I'd also go with that camera due to its magnificent optical stabilization, GREAT glass (lens) and a host of manual controls.

Try to Google search for Sony GL1 and you will see not only your request here listed, but will mostly be directed to Canon GL1, not Sony - there is a comparison of the Canon GL1 and the Sony TRV900.

The first question to ask: Do you have a computer capable of editing HD video? If you have a normal run-of-the-mill editing workstation, then shoot SD with the GL1.

Personally, I would use the GL1 anyway, just for the manual control options, but I don't know what your camera knowledge and skill levels are.

Hello,

Forgive my amateurish post. However I am a beginner in need of
help. I have access to both a Sony GL1 camcorder and also a small
JVC GZ-HD3 HD camcorder. I'm attempting to make a dramatic short
that will be uploaded to the internet (youtube, openfilm, etc) and also
burned to dvd. To all of you with intermediate - Professional
experience, (all other nuances, lighting, etc) which camcorder would
you use (based off of the cameras stats/reputations if any)...

Thanks in advance,

Clogged, dirty head. Needs a cleaner run thorough it, preferably the same brand as the primary tape brand you use for production. Sometimes too a poorly wound, loosely wound or otherwise too tightly wound tape will cause the GL2 to act up, give you a tape warning or otherwise raise your heart rate.

On occasion cleaning the heads will get you back most of what you recorded, but you will often lose a lot of it as well - it's a crap shoot on that outcome. Sorry.

I've noticed that when I replay the tape I shot through the camera (Canon GL1) it's not that uncommon to find that the images are broken up, sometimes there are alternate black bars across the images. Also, it's asked me to remove tape without any apparent reason. It's happened a few times. I'm wondering what's going on.

My company has had an XL1-s on hand since '02. Its a great camera and we've used it to shoot shorts, features, corporate video and stuff for theatrical release. We initally 'tricked it out' with an MA-200 audio adapter to add 4-channel audio (which works but audio has to be converted from 32 to 48kHz.) The benefit of the MA-200 is it turns the XL1-s from a 'buzzsaw' to an actual shoulder mountable camera. We also invested in the different lenses which makes it a truly versatile rig. I've used the GL2 and it makes a great 'crash camera' or when you're working in spaces that are too tight for larger rigs. My choice would be XL1-s primary and GL2 as backup. The question you need to ask yourself is; Will the XL1-s or GL2 allow me to produce compatible imagery? The reason I mention it is if you're doing stuff for the web, a progressive scan capable camera like the XL2 or GL2 is your better bet if cost is your main issue. DV though still viable is rapidly getting replaced by the many flavors of HD. So, depending on what the plans are for your imagery you should consider how the camera you choose will fit with your long-term goals.

I use a GL2, XL2, and several XL1s. All are good cameras. The GL2 and XL2 match very well in color and white balance so a two camera shoot will need very little color correction to match the cameras in post. I have the Beachtek adapter so I can use XLR cables. I do not use the built in mic on the GL2, I always use an AT shotgun mic for on camera audio. The GL2 will shoot in 16x9 had has a "frame" mode sort of a 30p look. I do a lot of documentary productions with field work on islands, wilderness trails, mountains, etc. I can pack in my GL2 to places I could never take my XL2

I haven't used the GLs before, but I have used the XL1s quite a bit at Syracuse University. The quality of video and audio on the XL1s is very good. The only thing about the XL1s is that they have a relatively steep learning curve; it's somewhat tricky to learn to use them well if you have never used them before. Personally, I wouldn't discourage you from buying a used XL1, especially if you have some experience using one.

Someone told me and I think it might be true, that the GL's and XL Canon models have the same chip set, meaning the picture will look about the same. I would say the biggest con about the GL models is that the sound is terrible and the sound on the XL is better especially since it comes with a stereo shotgun and the sound is fully customizable with levels and balance for up to two mics at a time. The con about the XL however is that it doesn't have an LCD screen so you have to look through the eye-piece. I purchased an XL 1 off ebay and love it. I use the XL1 for my own stuff and use the GL at my film school. Bottom line both cameras are decent, but I think it depends on what is more important to you, sound or being able to see your footage on a small screen.

I noticed that on B&H Photo there are a bunch of used XL-1's for sale. I am feel pretty good about buying something used from B&H, and I was thinking of getting one as a backup camera. The question I have is would you guys get a used XL-1 for a backup camera? Or would you buy a new GL-2 for the same price. I understand that the XL-1's have some years on them, and anything could go at any time, even if they are tested by B&H.
