I am looking to purchase a camcorder, and I am wondering what others think about the HD vs SD dilemma, especially with regards to wildlife subjects. I am an aspiring wildlife filmmaker and so far have shot all of my footage in HD (on a Sony FX1 and Canon XHA1). I am happy with the quality of the footage I shot on these cameras, but for wildlife filming longer lenses would obviously be a benefit. Here is a link to my showreel if you would like to see some of my footage: EXAMPLE FOOTAGE. Since I just graduated from college and those cameras belonged to my school, I now find myself without a camera.

I have done a lot of reading on choosing cameras in books and on forums, and I believe I have a pretty good handle on the costs and benefits of both HD and SD for wildlife, and in general. I know that interchangeable lenses are often considered a necessity for wildlife work, and as I have a knowledge of lenses and multi-lens setups I feel that I am ready to handle this type of setup. I know it adds a lot of cost, weight, etc, but again, for wildlife it seems like more of a necessity than perhaps in other film genres. Because of this I have been considering the Canon XL2.

On the other hand, I know that the wildlife film industry, and all video in general, is quickly transitioning to HD. I love the quality and resolution I was able to obtain using the FX1 and XHA1, but I just didn't get the magnification I need to film many subjects. While I could get close enough to woodchucks (within 10ft) to get decent close-ups, I can't get this close to a fox, deer, bear, etc. I am working on a budget, and so I can't afford something like the Canon XLH1 at this point, and so any HD camera I purchase would not offer interchangeable lenses.

At this point my main goal is NOT to produce lots of footage to sell to anyone, but to improve my reel with effective sequences of behavior so that I can show that I am able to shoot for sequence-editing and will subsequently be noticed by producers.

Is a camera like the XL2 good enough for this purpose? Or do I absolutely NEED HD footage in order to compete in today's HD world, even in terms of my showreel? Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hello.

I have a Sony HDR-FX1. It is HDV, 1440x1080i. I will be looking to extract the footage to 30p (I think) with the Cineform NeoScene codec. I have chosen 30p because 90% of our views will probably be online HD through YouTube, Vimeo and/or company.

(Someone said that YouTube converts everything to 24p in order to save bandwidth. I cannot verify that, but the general consensus seems to be that one wants to upload to YouTube and Vimeo at 30p, and in the H.264 codec. I do not know that for a fact either, so if someone here actually knows from successful experience, I am all ears.)

My question, then, pertains to two special features contained in the FX1. One is "What is Cinematone?", and the other is about the choice between Cineframe 30 and Cineframe 24. Does anyone know if these two Cineframe settings have anything to do with 30p and 24p? Or does it just make it look like they do?

I read on one site (if I understood it correctly) that Cineframe 24 would initially record the footage at 24p, and then the FX1 would put the 24p inside of a 60i interlaced 'wrapper.' Then the Cineform Coded allegedly extracts the 24p from inside of the 60i wrapper, yielding a true 24p with only minor loss of quality.

So for uploading HD to YouTube, Vimeo and the rest, to I need 30p, or 24p? And do I choose Cineframe 30, or Cineframe 24? And what is Cinematone? Does it affect the frame rate? Or just what exactly does it do?

I am plenty confused, so if anyone actually knows from experience, or could even just point me to where I could read something definitive, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,

Hello.

I hope this is the right place to ask this question. If this is not the right place to ask this, please just let me know what is.

I am still studying, trying to get ready for my first shoot. I have a Sony HDR-FX1 camera that records HDV in 1080i. I want to publish educational/documentary videos. I think probably 90% of the views will be online, and I hope to upload HD to YouTube, Vimeo, Veoh, MetaCafe and others. I plan to embed the Vimeo players and/or links in a new website we are working on. However, I also want to make things available in DVD (immediately), and if possible I would also like to burn to Blu-Ray, so I do not have to re-do anything in later years (if that makes sense).

I understand 1080i is not as good as 1080p, but it would be pulling teeth to upgrade my camera right now. I also bought the Cineform NeoScene Codec/converter, but have not had the opportunity to use it yet.

I did a Google search and got all sorts of advice about what format to shoot in, and whether to de-interlace or not. I want to do my best job, but since I am just getting started I also do not want to cause myself any problems. Everyone raves about the 'film look' of 24p. Is it difficult to use/edit? I have my FX1 set to Cinematone, Cineframe 24 (which I think is 24p). Here are my questions:

In Vegas Pro 8.1 or 9.0 (64 bit), under PROJECT PROPERTIES > VIDEO, do I select:

HDV 1080-60i, 1440 x 1080, 23.976 fps? Or is it better just to go with 29.970 fps, and set my camera to Cineframe 30 mode?

Also, when capturing in Vegas, do I de-interlace, or not de-interlace? There are all sorts of opinions out there (and all of them conflict).

The three choices I see for de-interlacing under Project Properties are "None", "Blend Fields", and "Interpolate Fields." I would prefer to lose as little resolution as possible. My machine is a CoreDuo Quad at 3.0GHz, with Vista Ultimate 64, and 8GB RAM. I would rather wait a little longer than lose quality.

Also, in Vegas 8.1, if I convert the captured footage using the Cineform NeoScene codec, do I uncheck OPTIONS > PREFERENCES >GENERAL > "Ignore third party DV codecs"? And where did this check-box go Vegas Pro 9?

I am still studying, but if someone experienced could please help me get lined out in "pre", it would probably save me a lot of time.

Thank you,

I am interested in pursuing a career in wildlife cinematography, but I am currently unable to purchase my own equipment. I have access to a Sony HDRFX1, but for filming wildlife, I really need larger than a 12x zoom. Since I don't really have any other choice, I am considering shelling out some money for a teleconverter lens that screws on to the front of the FX1. I know that these converter lenses are not ideal, but I don't have interchangeable lenses and I think I might still benefit from one of these.

I am wondering if anyone has had experience using teleconverters, especially on HD cameras. If there are downsides, especially to cheap conversion lenses, what are they and how will I see these disadvantages in my footage? Here are links to the two I have been considering. Obviously there is a big price difference. I can probably only afford the cheaper one myself, but may be able to get some money from elsewhere to purchase something more expensive.

http://stores.channeladvisor.com/47stphoto/items/item.aspx?itemid=4398667

http://www.digitalfotoclub.com/sc/from-froogle.asp?id=964730502&rf=froogle&dfdate=5_22_2009

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hello,

New to this forum and I hope someone here can give me some information and some help on what I am tring to do.

I have been asked to video a beauty pageant at our local auditorium and create a DVD of it. I have no issues with the video itself. I have done video in this place many times. My problem has always been audio. The last time I did a video I used a beachtek device tied to my camera. The beahtek device was plugged into the back of the soundboard(mackie) into the left and right main out jacks (could be the left and right aux sends, can't remember because I haven't done this in a while). I was told to try the tape out, but if I remember correctly, the last time I tried that the audio wasn't real clear, but that could have been my fault, because I went straight into the camera mic jack from the tape out. The sound I get is great when they are speaking, but if someone sings, it doesn't sound to great, it almost sounds flat, no mix of music and voice. I thought about taking a second camera and using it to record the sound and pulling the singing parts from that camera.Â

Is there a better way of getting a good mix of speaking and singing? Will a digital recorder work better and if so, what kind?

I have a Sony HDR-FX1 camera. I also have a beachtek DXA-4. The mackie box is pretty old, it has been in the auditorium now since probably 2000. It is a 24 line. I am not sure what the model number is, but if needed I will see if I can get it.

Thanks for any suggestions.
