I'm working on a documentary film with the Canon HF S21 and I'm finding it to be a great little camera. Getting into tight spaces is key sometimes and thjis camera does a great job. Here is the link: http://vimeo.com/28512314.

Hey everyone! I'm new to the forums, but i've been a subscriber of Videomaker magazine since 04'. Love it!

I just recently got into wedding videography and shot my first wedding last weekend. I offerend to shoot the wedding pro-bono in exchange for gas money, gratuity and referrals. Everything went well with the wedding shoot and I updated the couple that an edited copy of the video will be given to them within 4-8 weeks. They're very excited for the video but they asked, in addition to the edited copy, for the original raw footage. I'm not sure how to handle this situation. Correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't think it would be fair to just hand over the footage for free. In our original chats before the wedding I never indicated, nor did they, that I would give them the raw footage. Im just not sure what to do in this type of situation, especially since the only thing I was compensated for was gas.

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

I'm off to the Galapagos in June. I went there 22 years ago when I was 12 years old and it was unbelievable. The animals are all unafraid of humans so you can get within touching distance of them. It would be the most amazing place to get stock footage that I could sell. I see SD clips of animals shot there (sealions, iguanas, finches, frigates, etc etc) selling for US$199 on stock footage sites, so I figure I can take some time out to get some footage. Problem is that the regular tours are tightly controlled (time of stay on each island, close supervision etc). Does anyone have any experience of shooting there? Does anyone know what sort of footage (types of animals etc) sells the best?

Any thoughts on this would be massively appreciated!!

Â

Chris

Â

I shoot with Sony Z5's so I will take one of those along.Â

I recently bought the HDR FX7 and it is great except even in 1080i I still can get grainy footage at times. Even though it is HD the footage can look almost like my old SD camcorder. I am going to make a stab at it here from what I have known in the past. Is it lighting or controls set improperly?

Thanks

While waiting for the last ep of the Great Camera Shootout, I ran across this video by Jason Levine. He give a pretty good demo on using native DSLR footage in the Premiere CS5 timeline with the Mercury Playback Engine. One thing that came up during the Shootout was that after transcoding H.264 video to ProRes or Cineform codecs, DSLR footage becomes so much easier to work with and color-grade. The point came up then if that's the case, what's the 'big deal' about editing DSLR footage natively in CS5? Well, other than not having to go through all of that transcoding up front and saving it for final render, I can't think of anything else off hand. Anybody got any ideas? In the meantime here's the vid:

Hey there,

I'm a little young to the business side of videography, and I've only just begun to get into contracts, rights and all that legal jargon. This is mostly because my strengths are in Cinematography, but unfortunately to make a living these days I need to put on a producer hat most of the time and... well that's not my strength at all. So I was hoping to get some feedback on a recent problem I had...

My most recent project was a music video (still editing). From the start, I had my client sign a contract agreement regarding prices, and deadlines and whatnot. My director and I sat and talked to him for a few hours about the look and message of the video, and what he wanted to accomplish, the equipment we'd like to use... everything we could think of in order to ensure we were on the same page. We then wrote a treatment, describing in detail how the video will be edited in its finished form, and after three revisions, it was approved. We also did this with our schedule and budget, all were approved.

After shooting the project, we edited a first cut, color corrected, and added in rough visual effects. We showed the client and he gave us a LONG list of changes, very specific ones including time code (which was helpful, I admit, but I couldn't help but feel a bit smothered). A lot of his decisions ended up entirely changing the project from its original treatment which we agreed upon.

After having a long discussion with him, it's now become clear that he originally was looking for more of a political video than your standard rock video with performance shots... which was really the bulk of what we recorded! We're now stuck with having him send us a package of stock footage, and he's having us replace the shots that we recorded on location with shots he found in a documentary... which is kind of painful to do to work you spent hours composing in the field!

I'm sure it's not a matter of the video quality being poor. He even said it himself that we did a fantastic job with what we shot, but he's not happy with the video's message...

So, my fellow videomakers... I'm curious, how can this issue be avoided in the future? Was it my fault for not getting this out of him before hand? Should I be more specific in my contract about creative control? Or is this normal and I should just learn to expect it?

Thanks

Hi,

When I am working on a project, I sometimes need to open other applications, go to other folders or simply have a webpage up on my second monitor and read stuff while expecting PPro to keep playing. This was possible with PPro 2.0.

Now PPro CS3 stops playing the footage, be it in the source window or timeline, as soon as I click on something else.

Basically, no playback when PPro window is inactive... I am getting a bit annoyed as most of the time I need to play my footage in PPro while typing notes/script etc in another application.

Any ideas how to sort this out?

Thanks.

Please help!  I'm an amateur wildlife videographer who's never sold or licensed any video clips.  I have excellent footage of gila monsters in the wild -- an animal that is rarely sighted.  I was recently approached by an established nonprofit education company that wants to use some of my footage in their material and is willing to pay a fee.  But because they are nonprofit, they say their budget is limited.  I have no idea what to ask for or what is reasonable.  The videos are posted all over the web -- YouTube, Blip.TV, Revver, etc. but can be accessed from http://www.judykennedy.com/gilamonsters.htm if you'd like to take a look.  They'd probably want to use the uncompressed .avi tape footage of which I have hours, I don't know.  (It was shot with a Canon ZR200 digital camcorder.)  I have not spoken with them yet (just received an email) and do not want to until I have a better feeling for what is customary in these kinds of negotiations.  I hope someone can help me or refer me to a resource that can.  Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Hello,

I am working as a researcher on season two of the Spike TV series MANSWERS, basically a late night cable show that provides humorous but factual answers to trivia questions of interest to males aged 18 to 35. We are currently producing a segment entitled "How to defuse a bomb," in which we compare and contrast how bombs are defused in real life and in the movies, and a segment entitled "World's most dangerous fish" in which we compare the giant snakehead to other fish that are capable of killing humans. I am writing to see if any Videomaker members might have the following footage available to license to us:

Giant snakeheads in the wild, underwater, "walking" on land, fighting while being pulled into a boat by fishermen, close-ups showing its scary teeth, etc. Basically we are looking for anything that visually tells the story of how nasty the giant snakehead really is.

Close-up views of guy in bomb squad suit working on bomb by hand, people using remote controls to operate bomb robots, bomb robot using robotic arm to defuse/shoot/blow up bomb, bombs being blown up, either in open or in containment barrels, and any other footage with lots of gadgets or gizmos used to defuse a bomb, and people using them. We are of course prepared to pay a reasonable fee to license the footage (usually around $20 per second of footage actually used in the show.) Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, and as we are on deadline for the end of this week (Friday June 6tth) I would appreciate hearing from you at your earliest convenience!

I have been asked to put together a short highlight video revolving around fitness, active life, etc.  The project is fairly simple but I want to use stock footage as oposed to going out and shooting 10, 30 sec shots.  Anyone have a good place to get stock footage from?  Somewhere that you have had experience with?  Thanks.

If you have an HD camcorder, and you are shooting in HD, unfortunately YouTube will not show off the full beautiful details of your footage.

I would strongly recommend using http://www.vimeo.com as it is full HD capable, and your footage will look ALOT better. Here is an example of some footage:

http://www.vimeo.com/431500Â HV20 - Rainy Day Cinematography

Another suggestion would be that if you still want to use YouTube, also use Vimeo and provide a link to your Vimeo video in the description of your YouTube video so if they want to actually go see the HD footage, they can.
