I'm trying to transfer video from a Canon ZR800 camcorder to my pc using a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire. The pc recognizes the camcorder no problem, but as soon as I start the transfer process, the video image in the preview screens of both the camera and the pc show that the video is randomly pixelating as the video is transferring.

When I disconnect the firewire connection the video image on the camera plays smoothly....plug it back into the pc with the cable and it pixelates.

I have tried the camera and the cable on two different computers with the same result.

Also tried turning off the lcd screen on the camera as the video is transferred and still see pixelation on the computer screen

Is it likely that the cable is defective or am I missing something?

Many thanks,
Helen

Hi All,

I've been using FireWire800 for the past 6 years, and eSATA more recently.

USB 2.0 was simply never good for streaming video playback, due to the technical specs.

Are you using USB 3.0? Is it any good for HD video? I've found surprisingly little info on this topic.

Happy Editing,

Hey,

So I'm soon to buy my first prosumer camcorder (looking at the Canon XH A1) and am trying to work out what to do about recording footage. I apologise if these issues have been raised elsewhere (I couldn't find the specifics I'm looking for) or if they're dumb questions, but I'd really appreciate some advice. It seems the XHA1 records video to either mini-DV tapes or a DTE drive. Seeing as DTE drives seem to be extremely expensive (to me anyways), I'm looking more toward mini-DV and then transferring it for editing via firewire. However, I've read that doing this can wear the heads of the camera. Is this true? How quickly and how much damage does it do? Is it repairable? Are there any better solutions, like an external mini-DV player of some kind that could be used for firewire transfer instead?

One last question: what do you think are the best type and brands of mini-DV tapes for recording HD? Is the cost difference between standard and HD tape really worth it? We're trying to make our independent feature as professional-looking as possible but on a pretty limited budget, so are investing in the most important quality mark areas (some purchase, some rental). I don't want to go to all the effort of getting good footage only for it to be ruined by crappy media.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

Hello,

I'm a first time post(er). I wanted to ask for alittle advice before I upgrade.

I broadcast live games, and events with 4 Canon HV30s. Their connected to my PC via firewire. Firewire gives me excellent quality, but its short! My longest cable it 25'

What should I use for long distances? My camera outputs composite, component, and HDMI.

Is anyone using 100' component cable? HDMI? Am I overlooking a better way? I will need to buy capture cards as well (possibly Intensity Pro) but I want to figure out what cable I should go with while keeping my great quality. HELP! lol

I have a Sony TRV27 camcorder that uses a IEEE1394 Firewire connection to transfer my video tapes to the computer. Unfortunately my new computer does not have a Firewire port to connect to. It also does not have a spare PCI slot to add a Firewire card. I'm using Windows 7 and using Pinnacle video software.

Is there any way to download my videos to this new computer? Is there a Firewire to USB adapter available? If available, will it work?

If I'm forced to use an anolog connection, will I loose video quality?

Hi all, I am trying to capture video from a Sony miniDV camcorder using Nero 10 and firewire. I can see the device on screen and a scrambled version of the capture. It looks as though the pixels are all there, but very scrambled up and some of the bottom of the image is being shown at the top. Audio is ok. Can anyone advise what is happening and how to fix it? Windows movie maker gives the same result. Computer system is Win7 core i5 firewire. Thanks!

I'm a little nervous about trusting a USB2.0 transfer. I suspect it is going to drop frames, glitch, or get the audio out of sync, or some other annoying thing. But since I don't really know what I am talking about, over to you guys.... which do you think is best and why? And am I really going to suffer if I use a USB input?

As far as I can tell from the specs, the TM700 has a USB port but no FireWire port. In a videomaker article on choosing a WebCam, it says if you have a FireWire port you're good to go. But no mention is made of USB ports.

Can you run this camera as a WebCam over a USB connection?

I think my workflow isn't recommended, but for years, I've been happily streaming video from a camcorder (lately, the Vixia HV20) via firewire and audio from a usb mic, then combining in the machine. I'd like to go tapeless, but I don't see any tapeless camcorders in the consumer range comparable to the HV20 with firewire. Am I outa luck? For some reason, there never seem to be articles addressing this or specs showing whether a camcorder can be used as a webcam (which would indicate that I can do what I'm trying to).

I have a canon HD Vixia HF10 and just bought Pinnacle studio plus edition 12. The problem is I cant get my recordings to show up when I click the capture button. I get an error message that says

Studio is unable to connect to your video device.

If you have a DV make sure its on VTR, VCR or play mode and is connected to Firewire or 1394 port on your computer.

Right now I am connected to the computer from the mini USB to USB on the computer and I am in the play mode on the Canon. Thats the way it worked when I was using the software that came with the Canon with no problems except the software was pretty awful.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hello all. A newbie here with a rather simplistic question. At this point in the game, I have a Sony Handycam Hi-8 mm camcorder and no easy way to transfer my footage onto my computer for editing except to burn it to a DVD. The camcorder doesn't have a USB cable, just A/V cables. I do have firewire on my computer though. Is it possible to use a firewire cable with my analog Hi-8mm camcorder? I use the rather simplistic Windows Movie Maker for my editing. I'm looking to soon make some heavy upgrades to my editing software and to a digital camcorder...Â

But in the meantime, my current method is to burn the footage to DVD, then I have to convert the footage to an AVI in order for Windows Movie Maker to be able to use it. This heavily dampens my quality.  Is there any current video editing software that allows you to import footage directly from a DVD-RW?Â

I'm guessing there is a way to connect to the firewire, but I'm not sure what special equipment I may need to convert the signal from analog to digital.

Thanks for any help!

My question is in regards to output connections. Currently I have a GL1 and a GL2; BOTH of which have worn loose the 1394 firewire (mini) connections. I'm losing connectivity between the camera and laptop (using DV Rack / On location). Is there a better camera output I should be looking for when shopping for replacement cameras? When moving the camera over and over on the tripod, the connections have become loose. These cameras are approximately 6 years old and need replacing anyways. I don't want to make the same mistake with new equipment. Any suggestions out there? Thanks to all!

New to this Forum so hope you guys can assist!! I cannot get my PC (or my laptop!) (both running XP) to recognise my JVC firewire port. Nothing happens when its connected. I have tried the following:

The computer has two firewire ports (back and front) - all seem OK when connected to Laptop

I've tried two different JVC cams: DVM5 and DVX10

Have also tried - two firewire cables (in case one was US) and also a 4 pin to pin into the laptop

I've tried all the remedies I can find on various forums (including the JVC one which says reinstall Direct X) - all to no avail. The crazt thing is that I'm sure I've connected Ok before with the same kit. Analog capture just inst an option so can anyone help please??

So, I have a new MacBook Pro that I got blown out to 4gb of RAM. I know my system is powerful enough and I have followed all the tips found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1165

Yet, I still have the same problem and I want to rule out any other issues before I run out and get a new FireWire800 drive. Heres the scenario:

I shot a concert for a client in HD. Imported the footage into FCP using the HDV 1080i60 codec. When editing in the timeline all titles play just fine, but as soon as the playhead gets to any of the concert footage it stalls....I get the pinwheel....the playhead jumps ahead 3 or 4 seconds....stalls again....pinwheel....repeat. I have never had this problem before with other footage on this system. My scratch disk is an external 500gb Maxtor OneTouch 4 USB 2.0. I have heard from quite a few people that I need a drive that is FireWire800 to solve what appears to be a frame drop issue. Is this true?

I got paid very little since the client band is friends of mine, so buying a new drive will mean losing money rather than making any since I have already spent so many hours trying to fix this issue, but if I need a new drive for future projects then I might as well get it now.

 Thanks,

Hello,

I teach a video class at SWHS and we are having a big problem that I have never encountered before. 4 ZR830 cams and a GL2 have lost the function to transfer data through the ieee firewire port. All worked, then just started going down. The computer port works fine. I've tested the ports with external HD's and hubs and all work. The camera works great. WHen we connect the firewire cable to the camera and turn it on, nothing happens on the computer. The software says it is not detected. Has anyone else gone through this? Are the ports on the cameras all bad??? Any help is greatly appreciated. And yes, we have tried different cables.

Thanks

My daughter has won awards for the last two years at campus movie fest, this year best drama in the whole california area. (she is a grad student in another field).  Both of her movies have been stop time animation. She used a canon camera for the competition (5 days on loan), which had a firewire so she could record directly to her computer. It was a model ZR8000, i think. She would like a camcorder for Christmas, and she says she thinks she wants a Canon, but her main requirements are that it have a firewire and usb, and she wants the lens quality to be really good. Can any of you make a suggestion as to what model you would recommend for her budding talents? Thank you in advance. Her movie can be seen at the campus movie fest website, and the name of her movies are: S is for Slicing and Medo and the Dragon. She was told Medo and the Dragon is playing on Virgin Airways!
