I'm trying to make a decision on which editing software to use.
Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro. Can someone convince me why APP
would be better than FCP? What's the advantages for a marketing company
wanting to take this in-house for some production work.

I am a student learning to use Final Cut Pro, and I am trying to obtain a certain "overlay " effect. I want to make a music video of myself playing three instruments and another person playing two, and we would all be in the same shot. I would have to play a drumset which is not movable. I have a green screen to use and I vaguely understanding keying. The school only supplies a kodak "Flip" style video camera, yet there are shoulder mounts to use if needed, if camera type matters. If anyone could walk me through how to achieve this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a wedding photographer who has just started using her 5dMKii to make promotional videos and vlog entries on my blog. With some of my past projects in iMovie, there would be blockyness in the blacks and grays. So I went to apple and they told me the blockyness problem I was having was that iMovie was unavoidably compressing my files from my 5DmkII output during the transcoding, they suggested switching to Final Cut Pro. In asking a few of the videographer's I've worked with, none of them have mentioned working with FCP. They are either working with Vegas or Premier. FCP is considerably cheaper at $299 (although I see I may need motion and compressor if any of my clients ask for DVD movies with pictures). Sony Vegas Pro is $599.95. And Premiere Pro is $799. Vegas and Premiere have to have something that FCP doesn't for that difference in price right? I'm just wondering for me as a wedding photographer, who is only using this to do the occasional video editing, does it make sense to spend the extra $300-400 bucks. I don't want to buy FCP and then realize, d'oh actually in a month or two of using FCP I realize I want/need Vegas or Premiere. So for those who have used them all, what do you think of them and the differences between them? Also what's the learning curve like? I'll be coming from iMovie, which I have pushed to its editing limits, and I know CS4 Photoshop well. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

One thing I am trying to understand is how to get better slow motion footage. From what I hear it seems people shoot at a higher frame rate and then import the footage at a lesser one. Is that true? If so, how do you do that in Final Cut Pro? Example shooting at 60p and then bringing into 24p. Outside of Final Cut Pro, is there any other software you need to have to accomplish this effect? Can someone please explain this?

I edit film with FCP and I have reached a point where I need a better computer. The Mac Pro I have now dates from 2006/2007 and is way to slow for my needs. The question now is: should I upgrade the computer I have or should I buy a new iMac or Mac Pro. I would appreciate any advice! I'm of course looking for the most cost effective solution.

This is what I have today:

Mac Pro

2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon

2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Hard-disk: 232,44 GB

I might also have to upgrade my Final Cut Pro as it is as old as the computer: FCP 5.1.4 What would you recommend here?

I need a computer to edit film (possibly HD) and also a good way to do my back-up. My internet connection isn't very fast...

Thank you in advance!

So i'm trying to become a Video Editing Professional in Africa.
In my country, Apple Mac's are very expensive, and hard to come by.
It's all about PCs where I come from.
Now the NY Film School is doing dome training programme for folks in Nigeria, and I have chosen to take training in Video Editing.

The problem is the training will be done on the Final Cut Pro software which requires the use of Macs. So my fear is that at the end of the training, if I don't have a Mac, I would need to continue my training with some other software, like Adobe Premiere. So my question now is, are the differences in FCP and AP so much that I shouldn't bother with Final Cut Pro at all???

Hey guys,

I'm using a script called FCPtoAE in order to send a final cut video to after effects for color correction etc.

I tried rendering the comp I made in ae and when I play back the exported footage it glitches/freezes during playback. The timeline continues to play but the video freezes.Â

My render settings are as follows:

Render Settings: Current Settings

Output: Lossless

I've even tried exporting the video directly from FCP and adding it to AE then setting it to render and I have the same issue either way...

Does anyone know what the fix is for this?

I'm having a problem which may or may not have been plaguing my small studio since day one. Every video that we edit in Final Cut Pro exports in MUCH lower quality than it was when it was imported, not only that, the file size of the newly exported video is several times the size of the original. What I end up getting is a file too large for our clients to email around. We recently had a client come into our studio with a flash drive full of 15 second avi's no larger than 900 KB, he wanted a few of them edited together with simple cross fade transitions, and even a few seconds of dead space cut out. He needed them to be the highest quality possible for a powerpoint presentation he may now be unable to give. At first I exported them as Uncompressed avi's, best quality, thousands of colors, and no sound. The resulting file was not only blurrier, but now 260.5 MB!! And that one was with zero edits! The original was 803 KB and crystal clear. So after that I decided to try a few tests. We also produce a bi-weekly hour-long local television show, which looks fine on television but now I'm wondering how much better it could and should look. I've been exporting that out as a Quicktime, Apple ProRes 442 HQ, Interlaced bottom-field-first, zero filters, both compressor native and NTSC 720 X 480. I attempted this method on the client's original 803 KB with zero edits and not only did it export a completely unusable video compared to the original, but it was now 57.1 MB. What is going on here? Is Final Cut conspiring against me?

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/87/screenshotofavis.png/

This was after I created a new project, made the sequence settings into Apple ProRes lt 30p under the audio/video settings in Final Cut, and exported it as the same with 'current' dimensions (it was listed as 850X637, maybe that was the original?) Although I did have to render the original avi itself once it was placed in the timeline which you shouldn't have to do if the setting is the same as the clip. I guess there's no way to know exactly what sort of avi my original file is so I can match my sequence to it? The 'more info' (to be fair im sort of used to 'properties') leaves something to be desired..

Thanks everyone.

Since Sony Vegas Pro on my PC is so very unstable I am considering moving to an IMac and FCP. The one question I have is I have alot of AVI files, mp4 files and raw exports from my hd camerera are in mt2s format. In Vegas I could just drag any of these clips to my timeline and go to town (assuming no crashing of course). It's my understanding FCP doesn't work this way, but rather if you don't have .mov files you've got to convert the files first. Sounds like that would be a huge pain in the rear. Is this true? if so what tools are available with the FCP suite to convert and do they do batch converting.

Just a little perspective on what I'm using it for. I'm retired so I am not worried about developing skills that are relevant to the industry. I'm just playing around making fun little hd movies for friends and familiy. I like playing around adding special effects, titles, even have a little green screen studio set-up in my basement but I'm definately an amatuer and intend to stay that way - might do a wedding for a friend's kids for free but that's about as close to a pro as I ever intend to get.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to decide on what type of professional camcorder to buy to expand my home based video editing business. Having used low end Canon's in the past, i'm partial to them. The new Canon XA 10 looks enticing but as I work with Final Cut Pro, which does not support the XA 10's AVCHD format, I have reservations. I may go with the XF 100 instead. Has anybody heard if the new redesigned Final Cut Pro X supposedly coming out this summer will support AVCHD files? I will be using the camcorder to film interviews for personal biographies, sports video for montages, and promotional videos for businesses and non profits. Any suggestions or recommendations on a Canon, Panasonic, or Sony camcorder between $2,000 and $3,000 that is compatible with FCP?

I am shooting in HDV 1080i 30p and when I bring it into AE the aspect ratio changes from 16:9 to 4:3. It has opened a couple times as 16:9 but when I try and use the stamp tool or roto brush tool it switches to 4:3.

We haved tried recording in MOV and MP4. We have tried it on 3 different computers.

My husband and I have researched online for days, but can't open the files--all I can get is audio.

Is it possible JVC is not compatible with Windows? Will it only work with Mac and Final Cut Pro?

I was looking online for refurbished macs due to budget reasons however I didn't now whether or not to get mac pro or mac book pro.

what "specs" would be the best for editing and running FCP Studio 3?

Also what other things would I need to be efficient and productive as a freelance video editor?

I am a Senior in highschool right now and will be going to Ohio University majoring in Video Production and minoring in film. Â All of my life I have been a heavy Windows and PC guy, using Sony Vegas to edit. At the college and most everywhere else, the OS of choice is Mac. I sure would love to get a mac and final cut pro, but I know my family simply cannot afford paying $4,000 dollars or more for a decent editing system. Right now I am considering making a 'Hackintosh' by building a powerful PC for around $1,000 dollars and installing Mac OS X on it, the power of that computer would probably cost $6,000 Mac dollars.

The next issue after that is obtaining the actual video editing suite. $999 (student discount) for Final Cut Pro is way over mine and my parent's budget after already buying a new computer. Is it worth it for the full suite? Or should I simply get Express? There are many labs open, probably with the full suite installed, in the video production building that are open 24/7. So maybe Express would do it's job for me? There are many factors to consider and I am still unsure if I should purchase windows or mac, get Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express, resort to pirating? Who knows? So I am here to ask your opinions! OS X or Windows? Should I buy an actual mac or make a hackintosh? Pro or Express? Is it worth it to pirate it? What do you, yourself use? Are there any cheap alternatives that I am unaware of? Any advice would be appreciated!

Also, I am new the Videomaker forums, is this is the wrong category, go ahead and move it!

Hi, Hope Ive come to the right place to ask for help.

I've just purchased a Panasonic HDC-SD60 and as a novice I need some advice. I've worked out that I cannot import .mts into Final Cut Pro so firstly I have to use a converter, changing it to a quicktime file - a .mov or mp4,  both of which seem to have lots of settings. I've done this but my footage in final cut seems very grainy and not that good! My friend says its because its a cheap'ish camera but looking at examples of it on youtube it should look really quite good. As a comparison I loaded it directly into imovie 09 (no conversion necessary) and again, it looks pretty poor. Can anyone give me some tips or point me towards a good beginners site.Â

Many thanks, Paul.

Hi this may already have been covered in another post but I'm wondering about what sort of work flow people who are using Final Cut Pro to edit with are using to produce something on blu ray?

I'm new to the program - hopefully this is an easy fix that I'm ignorant about.

I have a 3 second clip, used the rotobrush to add a looping background, then I added an adjustment layer to it w. the sharpen amount set to 149. I added text from livetype on top of it. I wanted to move the clip back into FCP. I rendered it w/ quality 'lossless' - the clip then took 2.5 hrs to make the .mov - (better way for this?) I then opened it up in FCP - watched it, and all looks good, except for a bright white outline that flashes around my moving subject and kinda ruins the look of the clip.

I would like to take the sharpen off to see if that is what causing the issue - although I'm sure it is, because the text that I added on top is unaffected - But I don't really want to wait 2.5 hours for it to make the movie again before I know if that's even the problem. Any ideas?

Check this out, a film shot and edited within 24 hours. All shot in London about a month ago. Let me know what you think. It's an experimental film so their isn't much of a narrative.

Just spotted this article on macrumors:

Apple Refocusing Final Cut Pro? Jobs says "Next Release Will Be Awesome"

I hope it's not true, because I don't want FCP to focus on prosumers more than professionals. I say this in spite of being a prosumer. Not everything is supposed to be dumbed down so that everyone can use it. FCP is easy enough if one takes the time to learn it.

There's iMovie for people who cannot be bothered to learn editing.

Hi all,

I am a hobbyist looking at getting more professional and start getting paid for work I do. One thing I have noticed when I do effects such as overlaying footage on top of each other or freeze framing, just to name a few. When I output the project on DVD and I play back on a regular TV, the video looks really shakey and not smooth as it does in Final Cut and online. Any thoughts as to why this happens? Should I be exporting in a different format? Any advice would be great!
