Hello everyone! I've been using FCP for about 5 years now and I love it! However, I do use certain Adobe products as well like Soundbooth and Affect Effects. I find FCP is little bit more user friendly for me although, if I had the time to really sit down and learn Premier, I am sure I would like that as well!

Don't move the camera (during the shoot). Shoot five separate passes, one for both of you playing each instrument, you can then composite the layers and add 'camera' motion in post. There are YouTube videos with some examples like this:

I am a student learning to use Final Cut Pro, and I am trying to obtain a certain "overlay " effect. I want to make a music video of myself playing three instruments and another person playing two, and we would all be in the same shot. I would have to play a drumset which is not movable. I have a green screen to use and I vaguely understanding keying. The school only supplies a kodak "Flip" style video camera, yet there are shoulder mounts to use if needed, if camera type matters. If anyone could walk me through how to achieve this, it would be greatly appreciated.

That old deal was done, but they gave me an even better one for what I needed! I had CS4 extended, and was dying to be able to upgrade even just my photoshop to CS5. They ended up giving me some bizarro upgrade with 20% off, but it resulted in me getting CS5 production premium, so I will get that new Photoshop I wanted, and Premiere and After effects, all for 520+tax. I lose my most current version of acrobat pro and dream weaver, but I have an older version of acrobat pro and I never use dreamweaver any more. So HOOOOOORAY!!!!! you rock my socks! Thank you!!!!

Vail,

You're better off with FCP or Premiere since you're a Mac user. Vegas is PC only so you'd have to make a Win Partition on your main drive and deal with Bootcamp. I've got friends who use macs and did the bootcamp thing to use Vegas and they all say it works better on a PC rig.

Wow that's PAINFUL because I had wanted to upgrade to CS5 for photoshop, but had given up since it was so expensive and figured I'd live with CS4 for now. I will call them first thing tomorrow. Wish me luck! If not, I'll probably go with FCP X because the nice thing is I have a huge apple store down the street from me where they are willing to help me out if I get stuck on something. I won't have that help from Adobe.

If you call like, tomorrow, you MIGHT be able to beg Adobe to sell you Production Premium at the discounted price that expired yesterday. They might lose out of $850, but it would make you a long-term customer, which would be a win for them in the long run...

It's a shame you didn't ask this a few days ago. Adobe Premiere Premium was only $850 up until yesterday (it's usually $1700). You would have had everything you'd need for quite some time.

FCP used to be very capable, up through FCP7. Now that they have released FCP X, it's more for consumers/prosumers, in my opinion. However, it might be enough for you since you work by yourself. Basically, FCP X doesn't play nice with other programs (no XML, OMF, etc. exporting), it doesn't allow for monitoring via external monitor, media management is different (and seems clunky in my opinion), it doesn't handle codecs natively, and there's a whole bunch of other problems that make pros hate it. But you said yourself you will only be editing occasionally, and it sounds like you'll be working by yourself. So it might be fine for you. I can't say much more than that. I've only read about it. I haven't bothered to buy it.

Adobe has come a long way and is very capable these days. Apparently it works flawlessly with the other Adobe programs, too. It works will with all codecs natively, which is a big plus. And depending on the computer model you own, you may be able to take advantage of the GPU acceleration and 64-bit processing. I just got the Premiere Premium bundle the other day and am looking forward to digging in.

You sound like you're on a Mac, so I don't think you'll be able to use Sony Vegas. I don't think they make it for Mac...

I'm a wedding photographer who has just started using her 5dMKii to make promotional videos and vlog entries on my blog. With some of my past projects in iMovie, there would be blockyness in the blacks and grays. So I went to apple and they told me the blockyness problem I was having was that iMovie was unavoidably compressing my files from my 5DmkII output during the transcoding, they suggested switching to Final Cut Pro. In asking a few of the videographer's I've worked with, none of them have mentioned working with FCP. They are either working with Vegas or Premier. FCP is considerably cheaper at $299 (although I see I may need motion and compressor if any of my clients ask for DVD movies with pictures). Sony Vegas Pro is $599.95. And Premiere Pro is $799. Vegas and Premiere have to have something that FCP doesn't for that difference in price right? I'm just wondering for me as a wedding photographer, who is only using this to do the occasional video editing, does it make sense to spend the extra $300-400 bucks. I don't want to buy FCP and then realize, d'oh actually in a month or two of using FCP I realize I want/need Vegas or Premiere. So for those who have used them all, what do you think of them and the differences between them? Also what's the learning curve like? I'll be coming from iMovie, which I have pushed to its editing limits, and I know CS4 Photoshop well. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

I have both FCP and Premiere installed on my Mac Quad Core 14GB Ram.

I hate using FCP, by the time I've set up my project in FCP I've nearly finished it in Premiere. Just seems to take ages to do anything and the constant rendering is a massive pain.

I also find Premiere accepts a lot more file formats with out having to process them or requiring extra codecs. In short FCP is strict were as Premiere is very forgiving, which for a beginner is ideal.

But like everyone said it's a taste thing.

Your camera doesn't shoot 15000fps or even 1000fps. What you're looking at is the shutter speed (although, video cameras don't have an actual shutter).

Your camera only shoot up to 30fps.

I'm also curious on the topic. I shoot with a Canon XH-A1 but mainly at 60fps and for any slow motion shots I integrate the amazing abilities of motion, but with my camera's ability to shoot at ridiculous fps, why not take advantage of it? I want to import high quality slow motion around 1000fps (my camera goes up to 15,000 according to the dial settings) but when i import video and slow it down, it looks just like normal 60fps shots on FCP. Do I have to import it at a different setting than normal film? Thanks!

Rob, the new Mac Pro's do not need a raid card, it is right on the board now. I just got one about 3 months ago and it is really simple to do. One problem I can see from his current system is that he only has two gig of ram. If he goes to http://www.crucial.com it can scan his system and see how much he can cram into it.

Also a few 1.5 terabyte hard drives could be in order, they are getting cheaper every day. Get another 250 gig hard drive and then you can set the two 250's to raid 1 and the 1.5's to raid 0 and you could be rocking and rolling.

One question, are those Intel processors or are they another brand. If they are Intel you may also be able to plug in a graphics processing card, if FCP accepts them that is. I use Premiere and love the Mercury Play Back engine as it helps to speed up the rendering process.

Hope this helps.

I have a Mac Pro with that same processor. I never sit around wishing it was faster, so I'm wondering if the problem your media management. You only listened on hard drive - the 250GB drive. Is that the only drive in your computer and the only drive you use for video editing? If so, then yes your computer will be very slow and it will be more cost effective to by the proper storage devices.

But if you are handling your media correctly and still need a faster computer, buying new Mac Pro will last longer because they're expandable and they stuff more processors in them. So it takes longer for them to be perceived as "slow."

If you upgrade to the new FCP, you're stuck with FCP X, which doesn't open old projects. I think Apple is still offering FCS (FCP7), but there's a catch to it or something.

And as for backup, well, you need to have a hard drive (or preferably a RAID) dedicated to your projects and a hard drive dedicated to backing up the memory cards that your camera records to (if you've made the leap to solid state recording). Then you need to back up both of those drives. G-Tech is a good source for RAIDs and hard drives.

I edit film with FCP and I have reached a point where I need a better computer. The Mac Pro I have now dates from 2006/2007 and is way to slow for my needs. The question now is: should I upgrade the computer I have or should I buy a new iMac or Mac Pro. I would appreciate any advice! I'm of course looking for the most cost effective solution.

This is what I have today:

Mac Pro

2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon

2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Hard-disk: 232,44 GB

I might also have to upgrade my Final Cut Pro as it is as old as the computer: FCP 5.1.4 What would you recommend here?

I need a computer to edit film (possibly HD) and also a good way to do my back-up. My internet connection isn't very fast...

Thank you in advance!

I love these religious-type arguments! If it is so hard to decide which software/platform to use then it doesn't matter which one you choose because they are about the same.

Personally, I have used different brands over the years and have come to the conclusion that the most important feature is reliability. The system that starts up every time, runs hour after hour, day after day without crashing, slowing, blue screening or exhibiting the endless variety of performance degradations that NLEs are prone to is the one for me.

All platforms are difficult to learn but offer great creative possibilities if you climb the learning curve. But nothing stifles creativity like frequent crashes or glacial-speed performance after you add a few effects etc.

Currently, I'm running CS5 on a high-end Windows 7 machine and it is very friendly. A friend who runs the latest "big Mac" with FCP says that performance problems with earlier systems seem to be fixed and he loves his newest platform.

Regards,

I'm just a hobbyist but I haven't edited in a long time. I'm a PC user but I used Macs while in school so I've used FCP and Adobe. I like them both but if I was going to as a profession I would invest in a High end Mac and use FCP. But since I'm just getting back into this stuff for fun I'm going with CS5.5 for all the package has to offer.

I actually came over here to find a topic about capture cards and saw this topic. I built my new PC for Vegas Pro but I think I'm going to go with CS5.5. FCP and PP both have their pros and cons but I guess, for me, it's about what kind of projects I want to do and budget. I haven't done any of this stuff in so long that I'm going back to square one.

I am a PC user, so I use Premier Pro and Sony Vegas for my Editing projects. Some people say that Final Cut Pro is much better in render quality than other editing software's.Please explain is that true or not, and why? Thanks

Thanks Mr. Shultz. The writer, Adam Winston, has some great ideas for the rest of this story. Hope he shares them with the world one day.

My good friend and fellow producer from my music video, Raymond Vargas, came to work on this project because, first I needed him, but then became in love with the story because of the choices and decisions that kids/young people make at this point in their lives. He sees this movie as a great vehicle for anti-bullying campaigns.

Nice work, are you going to continue this story line? Hollywood is out of ideas and this could develop into something really cool, maybe for a film festival or something.

That was GOOD! I see you had a fairly large gang working with you - well done! OK, tech talk time!

Was it done on a 5D? What cameras?

Where did you get that fantastic sound track. It fit in so incredibly well. You do that from scratch or get audio tracks from somewhere?

How did you capture the audio? Did you use sound effects, foley or was this all recorded on set?

Did you use dollies, sliders, steadicams or what?

Once again, most impressive!
