Awesome a camera as the 5DmkII is, two main problems come from converting the the CMOS sensor image from stills to video are; Moire and Aliasing. Moire is the 'rainbow effect' when shooting video of fine detailed surfaces like certain rug and clothing patterns, brick walls, etc. Aliasing is those lovely jagged edges in the images when they should be smooth.

However, there's a solid fix for that now with the Mosaic Engineering Optical Anti-Aliasing Filter. Here's a vid by cinematographer Glenn Przyborski giving a rundown on what the filter can do in the MkII.

Birdcat's post was "so good they used it twice" Personally, I have filters as described above but I rarely use them as Prem Pro has all the FX I need - or want at this time. But don't discard them just yet, would be my advice. You never know when they might be useful. I admit to being a hoarder which can cause some friction with SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed - ie my wife) but there have been times when things I have hoarded have got me out of a hole.

When I used to do serious still film based photography I had dozens of filters including cross-stars, multi-imagers, polarizers and diffusers (although a little vaseline on a skylight worked wonderfully).

With the advent of programs like Photoshop and many non-linear editors (I use Vegas Pro) the need for physical filters is obviated.

If I want a softer look, I just apply a slight gaussian blur and no more vaseline needed - I can even use masks to apply these filters selectively to only parts of my image.

I would suggest you go into your NLE of choice and experiment with the built in filters it comes with to get an idea of what you can do.

I have been shooting stuff with my HMC150 and love the picture. I currently have a UV filter, a polarizer and a warming filter from Tiffen.

What are your thoughts about diffusion filters and Soft/FX filters (any brand)? Are they useful or necessary on this camera? If you have some experience, can you please contribute a few tips about which filters to use in order to achieve particular "looks"?

Any advice on software filters is also welcome. Thanks!

Well, I am replying to my own thread, but I just wanted to report some corrections and add a bit to the last post.

After further experiments, I withdraw my suggestion about not getting the Soft F/X 3. It seems to work fine on the HF200. It seems the visible pattern I was referring to was an iMovie issue; the footage looked beautiful and smooth after I restarted iMovie. Here are a few observations:

You want to keep the aperture wide open, as the filter pattern will show at small apertures, such as when shooting outdoors on a bright day. Use ND filters if you want to use diffusion.

It is wonderful on people, just like it says in the adverts. However, try to avoid specular highlights in the frame as they tend to bloom in an obvious way (unless you want that effect, of course). Also avoid using it in silhouette shots.

I found that it helps to dial down the exposure a little bit (about 1-3 dB). This makes the blooming effect more subtle.

There seems to be some chromatic aberration near the edges of the frame while using this filter, throughout the zoom range. I need to run more tests on this. Most people won't notice this, however.

Well, I tried the Soft F/X 3. DON'T BUY THIS FOR HD CAMERAS!!!

The filter pattern is almost always visible, and the effect is a little over-the-top. Try one of the HD diffusion filters, maybe. I am using the following custom image settings with no diffusion filter:

Brightness: -1

Contrast: -1

Sharpness: -1

Colour: -1

with xv colour off and PF30 mode (since I am using FCE 4 which does not support 24p). The image looks amazing after these adjustments: less blown highlights, better colour and not too much sharpening.

I also try to keep WB, focus, exposure and audio gain in manual mode while shooting. Hope this is useful to someone!

Any suggestions for a diffusion filter for this camera? Anyone?

I am looking for a diffusion filter to use with my Canon HF200. The Tiffen Soft F/X 3 is suggested on some websites. Is this is a good one to use? I want something that takes away the over-sharp video look, but is not too over-the-top.

I actually haven't started shooting yet. From the review, I heard that the whites were blowing out (particularly in bright white) - color information is lost to some degree. Great advice, though. Recording it as it is and fixing it in post probably won't create any noticeable problems. The camcorder does not have any on-camera color settings.

I did want to see, however, if such a mechanical gadget exists. It sounds simple to be able to Google and find a camera filter that de-saturates colors - I was wrong there.

You can play with in-camera settings. Go by your scopes in post and simply reduce chroma as required... or per your taste. As long as it's not blooming out of your camera, you'll be fine.

I recently got a good deal on a broken JVC GZ-MG505 (3-CCD) camcorder and plenty of discounts on JVC's repair service. Viewing its color performance (camcorderinfo.com), I heard that the Everio GZ-MG505 produces a nice and clear image, but with a neon (over-saturated) color reproduction. Good image with one side effect - the colors are not accurate.

I've heard of filters that will polarize and increase saturation levels. Are there any video filters available that will decrease the saturation level with the apropriate size for my camcorder.

ya actually I used to shoot in Nightvison for B & W on a tv show I used to work on. It actually works better! And the contrast isn't lost like in most cases due to more light being shuttled in. And B & W video is far more dramatic and effective with emotion on video, so for a wedding... it'd be perfect!

Hi all, I'm new here and need some assistance and ideas. Here's my dilemma...
I got married this past weekend and the ceremony and reception was recorded on my Sony DCR-SR42 camera. The video came out crystal clear and it is perfect except for one thing...I didn't realize that nightshot (infared) was activated on the camera. As a result there is no blue at all on the video making all the colors become totally wrong. I have tried (software) color correction and filters with little or no improvement at all. My question is ...is there ANY WAY to fix this issue so I can salvage my wedding video? Is there a filter that will reverse the effects of the infared filter that was inadvertantly used?

Any help would be a Godsend!!

Regards;

basically the image looks greyish/blue kind of like a tim burton movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--EV6ox17g4&feature=related .... and mostly if you look at photos of metal bands... the pictures looks almost like a painting more than a photo...

if anyone has an idea of what i am talking about, can i achieve this through filters, settings on the camera, or is it only computer made?if so what is this effect called?

thanks a lot...

I apologise if my typing was some how too loud or whiney for you. Â (???)

"Oddly enough, 37 years of experience has" (Must piss you off that some "Photographer" can pick up a video camera and make money in less than 8 months.).

"Apparently you’re the ONLY person with access to this particular filter manufacturer. " (i listed several manufacturers).

"On the other hand, you report multiple instances of dropping your camera." (if you were as quick to read as you are to hurl insults, you'd notice that I was quoting somebody else, who dropped his lenses not necessarily his cameras).

"Who cares?! I don’t need advice on changing tires when my car won’t start" (the op asked for advice on filters and was advised that the ones he was looking at were cheap, and he'd be better off getting a lenshood and QUALITY polariser, instead of the ones he was looking at.....I'm sure the other poster DIDN"T ask for any RANTS or NAME CALLING).

I apologise to readers on this forum.

I've been letting this person annoy me.Â

Clearly this person views this forum as his own turf, and feels threatened by me.

Instead of feeling insulted by him, I realize I should be feeling sorry for him. (much like a homeless person that lays claim to a park bench....sure you could argue it's public space, or first come first serve, etc, but at the end of the day, You get yo go home to your Good Life, and all the other guy's got is his park bench, in a place you'd rather not be walking around at night.).

Barefoot, you have my pity, and I'll pray for you, that your business picks up to the point, that you have less time for this senseless harassment.

I'll let you have your bench back... Â

Good-bye.Â

I’m so sorry Don, but claiming you’re right because you loudly whine and “get the last word” does not make you right. It makes you more pathetic, pathetic and wrong. Only idiots claim they are right by being louder & more annoying.

Now if you wanted to support your claim that lens hoods are there to provide protection, all you would have needed to do is link us to the several manufacturers that make the same claim. We’ll wait patiently for you to locate them, hopefully before the turn of the 22nd century.

Instead, you claim to be some sort of expert who hangs out with a multitude of pros who don’t use filters but do use lens hoods. You make the insane claim pros don’t use filters because they degrade the image quality. Then quickly follow up with the claim that your filters don’t because they are so expensive. Apparently you’re the ONLY person with access to this particular filter manufacturer. Pros or us poor prosumers can’t use those same filters.

You argue that lens hoods are excellent protection for lenses since they act as a crumple zone when the camcorder is dropped on the lens. Oddly enough, 37 years of experience has proven to me that I don’t need a crumple zone since I’ve never dropped my cameras. On the other hand, you report multiple instances of dropping your camera. So if your butterfingers can’t hang on to the camera, a much, much better solution is to use a neck or shoulder strap so the next time you drop your camera, it doesn’t fall to the ground on its lens. Problem solved!!!

You also claim that anyone would know that a polarizer acts as an ND 2 filter just by using their cameras built-in meter. But when the question was asked, it was obvious the user didn’t have either an ND or a polarizer to attach to his camera. This is far from the first time you have utterly failed to understand the question and then pathetically whined that you were right about totally irrelevant information. Who cares?! I don’t need advice on changing tires when my car won’t start. No matter how accurate the tire advise might be.
And finally, you claim to be an expert because you make your living from video production. This is surprising to me since a mere eight months ago you were a self-professed beginner. (Now run real quick to your Videomaker profile and change it so no one else will know.) From a beginner to a butterfingered pro in only eight months. Great work! Why don’t you share with us your impressive client list so we can see your video and judge for ourselves just how professional you are? Without that, I’m forced to assume you’re lying to us about something.

And quoting Forrest Gump, “That’s all I have to say about that.” Now you rush off and change that profile so you can come back here to pathetically whine some more. And as always, you can have the last word. But it still won’t make your comments any more appropriate or correct.
