On ubuntu the best editor is Cinelerra, its the best option for the ubuntu O/S. Its an advanced editor. A more basic editor for ubuntu is Kdenlive, which is good too. I recommend you get a windows or apple O/S and use for editing. Linux just doesn't have any really good editing software yet. Most of the avaliable editors crash, have no people that use them that can help you, and just can't compare to windows and/or apples editoring software.

Hey there Albert,

I have looked long and hard to find video software for Linux that was mature enough to use for professional video production. You don't say what type of software you are looking for, but here's my two cents worth. As a video editor/compositor; Cinelerra is a powerful professional tool, yet it is hard to install properly, and even then all features may not work well or at all on Ubuntu. It does have the advantage of using the Cinelerra authored Quicktime4Linux library which works well on .mov files with lots of codec support. I have used it professionally but with much anguish. Lots of tutorials (no matter what your experience level, go through the beginners tuts as they provide much needed info) and there is at least one repository which has a Debian package and several Ubuntu packages if you look in the Ubuntu forum. I found the best way was to compile my own, it worked better on my PC. Lots of tutorials both video and otherwise on the web.

Kino will import and export .mov files but will not give you much use other than straight cut editing and some very standard looking wipes, plus a few simple effects. It can be a little confusing on how to use it but at least try it out. When I was working in Linux I used it mainly to capture and to convert files from one format to another. There are some tutorials if you think it's good enough for the use you're putting it to.

Blender has some new editing features if you have the fortitude to go through the learning curve, but the editing feature is rather immature just yet, and a little harder to use than say Premiere. The compositing features available to you in Blender are enormous, but again that annoying learning curve.

Everything else I've used on Linux in the past has had the misfortune of being Windows Movie Maker quality, and perhaps more immature than that.

Give these a try, you may find what you're looking for. Hope this helped.

Hi there,

I use ubuntu 11.04 (linux) and cant find any software supporting MOV file (canon S95). I remember that I had same problem some time ago when using windows platform.

I'll be using software for editing diving movies, so I need something powerful but not too complicated... I find iMovie, which accepts MOV file, simple and reliable for this kind of work... Unfortunately, cant use iMovie on Ubuntu...

Need some help!! I've been looking around for some time but no success...

Thanks in advance!!

Play nice kids.

When I need to create sub-project files that have good quality that I can edit (read little or no compression) I usually choose AVI for SD and MOV for HD.

For final disc output, for SD (DVD) it's MPG and for HD (BD) it's M2V, with AC3 for audio for both.

for the web, I don't render out using H.264 directly but use QuickTime pro to create my videos (MP4 with H.264 for YouTube & Vimeo).

i can't buy another drive in the time frame for this project...

Why not? Do you live in the boonies?

Any big box store like Best Buy, Future Shop or Costco has 1 TB. drives for well under $100.

The only time I render using a different codec is when I'm getting a project ready for delivery, be it a DVD, the web or something else.

Otherwise all files stay in their original format.

I know that's not the answer you want to hear but that's always been my philosophy and I see no reason to change it.

which format would be closest to dv avi in terms of quality but as small as possible? i can't buy another drive in the time frame for this project so finding a smaller codec is the answer.

i used to shoot on a handheld 3ccd jvc everio which had a hard disk and recorded in MPEG2 dvd; quality wasn't bad. would it be a good format?

I personally wouldn't resize the footage from your Panasonic as you lose the ability to zoom in on it if you want to.

I deliver in SD (DVD) but do all my shooting & editing in HD as I love the ability to zoom and pan if I want to without losing quality.

Having said all that, if your 720x480 footage is DV-AVI from a miniDV camcorder, that's the format I'd recommend.

Any time you render, you lose quality. For that reason alone, it's always best to stay with the original format. Hard drives are very cheap these days (2 TB. models are under $100) so buy one or more and keep your video quality at it's best.

Im editing a video for a local school's band, and am now in the process of doing interviews with some of its members. I am shooting using a Panasonic AGHMC170 in 1440x1080 HD, then downconverting to 720x480 NTSC DV Widescreen as the rest of the footage is this way. However, NTSC DV Wide takes up too much space, and the interviews are about 20 mins.

What high-quality format can I use that's smaller but will still prove easy to edit?I was thinking maybe MPEG2 DVD, or some sort of MP4? Thanks!

I shoot all my video in HD and edit it in the raw format that the SONY camcorder produces (.m2t) using Corel Video Studio 12 and then I convert the finished product to upload to YouTube and there is no quality loss at all. I upload in 720 to YouTube and have great results so far.

I use the SD100 too and edit with Sony Vegas, the MTS files from the camera go right onto the timeline and are editable and exportable into any format I require.

You can also simply rename the extension on the files from MTS to MPG and they should open in any editing program with no loss to the video quality.

There's a suggestion above to switch the camera to SD mode, but unfortunately the 100 only does HD formats.

I use a Sony FX1000 so my footage (on tape) is *.m2t. My NLE is Sony Vegas Pro 9c. I have the same loss of quality when I am rendering to PAL (I live in the Netherlands) SD widescreen. Taking video footage in SD is no option for me. I didn't by a new HD camera to shoot in SD. But when you want to share your video with your friends, you will mostly have to burn it on a DVD. What I do is render the project to a *.wmv format. Then it is still HD. I import the *.wmv file in DVD Architect (comes with VEGAS) and burn it on a DVD. Before the burning of the DVD starts, DVD Architect will render the file again to PAL SD Widescreen format. The quality of that DVD is as it should be, but it takes a long time rendering. So if anyone knows a shorter method?

I record in HD all the time and render out to SD most of the time - My NLE (Sony Vegas) does a superb job of downconverting to SD and what I view on my DVD player looks great.

I do convert the MTS files to M2T using VASST/New Blue FX's AVCHD Upshift first so maybe that is an option for you.

You are going from HD to SD. The encoding process is trashing your video. If you are publishing to DVD, switch your camera to wide screen SD. This way the camera does the downsizing. The encoder doesn't have to compress as hard so your results will look better. I know it sound odd but unless you are publishing to blue ray, it makes no sense to shoot HD. You're still getting the value of the HD. I had to do a test myself before I would believe it. I took some video in HD then burned it to DVD. Then I took some the same footage in SD footage and burned it to DVD. The SD footage looks better. Until we get better encoders this is what we are up against. Gerry in Calgary.

Basically ive got a panasonic hdc sd100 and when i put my hd footage on to my PC using the software it came with, panasonic hd writer, the quality is brilliant. But i can't edit this footage with adobe premiere pro cs3 or pinnacle studio 11 because i need to save it as an mpeg2 file first. But when i save it as a mepg2 file the quality is rubbish compared to what it looked like on the hd writer software. Plus it only gives me the option on the software to save it as a mpeg2 file.

Im getting really annoyed because the picture quality is fantastic when it is on the camcorder and the hd writer but when i edit it after ive saved it as a mpeg2 file(which is the only option on the hd writer), the quality is quite frankly crap.

Just wondering how i can get the footage off of my hd camera and edit it in the best possible quality, i want it to look like the footage on the camera, is this possible?!Do you have to save the footage in a different file format and how do you do this. Im just getting in to filming and am a bit thick on things like this as you can probably tell. please speek terms i can understand, cheers

Yeah by default its set to AV. If you go into your menu options by hitting the Function key and scroll down to menu from there in the black screen search for AV/Headphones and select headphones. When your in AV mode you will get the buzzing sound when wearing headphones. Once you select for headphones when you go back out you will see an icon at the bottom of your lcd with a pair of headphones.

I usually don't use headphones while filming, but I plugged the headphones in and was surprised to hear a loud buzzing noise instead of the video audio. For me, the noise is also heard in photo and dual shot mode.

I have a Canon HF200 Vixia which is similar to yours only that you have onboard memory as well. Lucky you. You should also have a memory stick that you can put into
your computer if you have the slot for it. If not then you can use the usb to connect
to download to your computer. I myself use Sony Vegas and it recognizes mts files so I can edit easily. Premiere CS3 does not support those types of files; however Premiere Pro CS4 does. I found their link here http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405978.html

Hope that helps. Now I have a question for you, have you had trouble in movie mode trying to listen to your talent through the use of headphones? For me it only seems to work in photo and dual shot modes, but not in movie mode.

Hi, I have a Canon HF20, and the camcorder requires me to use a certain software (Pixela ImageMixer 3) to load my HD footage into the computer.

Now, I want to import my footage into Premiere Pro CS3, but am unable to due to "unknown or damaged file format." The file is H.264 format and ends in .m2ts or just .mts. How can I get my footage into Premiere?

Thank you for your help.

John,   Thanks for the reply. I tried holding shift and starting Vegas, no luck! I've reinstalled Vegas a couple of times already (before I posted). AND... I've tried restoring to a restore point (2 different points before the AVG thing) and both failed.

One thing I found in a post somewhere was a different Vegas error: the post said to: Start - Run - 'sfc /scannow' then: Start - Run - 'chkdsk /r'. And the guy posted back that everything worked! I tried this but came to a point to where it asked me to insert my CD that I used to install SP2. I didn't have one so I might try making one and trying again and inserting the disc. Basically it's making sure that all the System files are in place and correct.

OR... I might just reload the whole system. My laptop came with Vista and I put XP on it anyway and have all the drivers I need, so I know I can get there.

Hit me back if you come up with anything else. I post back with any miracles I might find.

hmmmm.... interesting problem, i would first try a "reset" of vegas by holding the shift key while starting vegas. that will restore everything to it's defaults...... second thing i would try is to reinstall vegas to fix any files that have been corrupted, third thing i would try is a system restore to before you upgraded avg to 8 and see if you still have problems.

Good Luck

 Hey all,

I started a new project in Vegas 8 the other day, I wanted to get my clips in and save off the project to edit for later. I threw in the clips, waited for all the audio to load and went for the save. I received the following error:

Error - " An error occurred while saving the project file MemorialDay.veg. The file could not be created. "

I've messed with folder permissions in file explorer. The folder alway has a green square in the 'Read only' box (not a check, just a green square) I clear the green square and save for this folder and all below and still I get the error.

I did one time get the project to save by naming the project something else and while in the 'Save As' dialog box, right mouse clicked the folder I was saving in and did the 'Read Only' box clear and continued. It did save the project and and when double clicked in file explorer brought up Vegas and the project.

But...

When I made a modification to the project and tried to save it gave me the same error as above. AND... when I closed everything and went back in using file explorer the project was renamed to PROJECT.veg.bku. I tried the same thing over again and that time I went back in the project was GONE! Not renamed, but gone.

I CAN'T HAVE THIS !!! I need to get some editing done.

Last week I upgraded my AVG Free virus application to Ver 8 from 7.5 like I was told to do and it made my laptop run 'funny'. Everything took forever and some things just wouldn't load, but they showed as running in Task Manager! WEIRD! I looked at Avira's virus and it has some good reviews so I uninstalled AVG and am now using Avira's Antivir. That's when I brought up Vegas to get some work done. And now I'm not getting anything done except typing out my probelms.

One note: In the past I would be editing and go to save and get this error. I would try again a few seconds later and it would save. I never thought much of it. Now it will not save a project at all.

Has anyone encountered this?

Is it something to do with the File I/O manager of Vegas?

Thanks in advance,
