There have been a number of products coming out lately that deal with the number 1 issue concerning Flash Media in the field. Yeah, solid-state cards are great since you don't have to digitize the footage but when they fill up you have to take time to download them or buy a buttload of cards which can get expensive.

Videographer Paul Joy's video review of Nexto's latest answer to this problem answered a lot of my questions about the rig and as I move further into a solid-state workflow, I see this on my list of future purchases.

I love sound work almost as much as video. For some dumb reason Sound Design and Field Audio are always considered 'secondary' aspects of film and videomaking. Unless you plan on making a silent movie (good luck with that), you're going to have to pay attention to sound. Even at the highest ends of production you can still get bit in the backside by poor sound capture. Here is a video by Ben Slotover with some 'Tips for Good Sound'. Be advised, there is some salty language in spots so watch at your discretion.

composite1 on "Digital in the Field..."

Here on the forum there is a constant stream of posters asking, "What should I do to save my videos?" Now, that's a broad question. But whether you're shooting tape or one of the varieties of 'tapeless' card-based flavors, the issue these days is archiving both for long-term but primarily in the field.

The following article "Blazing a Path in the Digital Wilderness" by Carl Mrozek covers a wide range of areas including; outdoor/wildlife, workflow in the field, storage/power issues and a lot more! Though his work is primarily with P2 based tech (this ought to make Robgrauert very happy), he does talk about XDCAM and other tapeless digital professional formats.

So how can this work for you? Granted you may not be like the featured Cinematographer Dereck Joubert and drop $750k worth of equipment in a crocodile filled river and have to go fish it out, but how he dealt with that and continued on is a great example of what today's gear is capable of.
