I'm adding a 3-Way CC to clips in FCP and rendering them out. When done for the night I shut done computer and then open the next day only to find the 3-Way filter no longer attached to clips. 99% sure I save project before shutting down at night. Where could the problem be?

I am a student learning to use Final Cut Pro, and I am trying to obtain a certain "overlay " effect. I want to make a music video of myself playing three instruments and another person playing two, and we would all be in the same shot. I would have to play a drumset which is not movable. I have a green screen to use and I vaguely understanding keying. The school only supplies a kodak "Flip" style video camera, yet there are shoulder mounts to use if needed, if camera type matters. If anyone could walk me through how to achieve this, it would be greatly appreciated.

All I am doing is recording a 1 hour shoot of someone speaking.. weekly. I will be "burning" that video to DVD AND also uploading to a website to view via "QuickTime" player. Can someone please just tell me what presets to use. I don't have a good understanding of video/editing theory knowledge.

I recently got a Canon Vixia HF S10 and am using it with Final Cut Pro. I've learned a lot looking things up online although I don't entirely understand them (for example...I changed the settings to prores, but I'm not so sure why, I compressed to a quicktime movie and entered new settings that meant nothing to me because thats what I supposedly had to do in order to post it HD on to vimeo.) But at least I know what to do even if I don't know why.....question one...is there someplace online that actually explains compression settings and teaches you when to use what settings on FCP or using the mac compressor. I've found tutorials that give you a recipe of what to do, but they don't really try to explain why its necessary. It'd be nice to be able to learn what every setting means so that I can use my own judgement for specific situations and not have to look up the compression setting recipe.

Question two: (the probably more naive question) I've seen on this board people saying that hooking up a camcorder to a computer through a usb or firewire can burn out the connection overtime and to use a deck for this purpose. What exactly is a deck, where would I get one, and what type of deck do I get (if there are a lot of different options)?

Thanks for any help as always!

Hi Everyone,

I have the latest version of FCP and wanted to know how I can burn a high quality DVD. I don't know if it is possible but can I use a regular DVD and burn HD onto it? The video I want to output is only 30min. Note: I read somewhere that you can tweak FCP and apple DVD studio pro to make such a disk that I am noting here.

FYI:The inputed footage to my timeline was HDV 1080i (Sony HVR-V1U). I have a new iMac computer and want to use the DVD burner that is built into my apple computer instead of taking the blu-ray route.

I just got a killer deal on the latest 15' 2.8 Ghz MacBook Pro. Core 2 Duo, 4G Ram. 500G 5400 Hard Drive. My question is; do I really need a 7200 internal drive as the OS drive for FCP? I will have a eSATA external drive for my video files. Do I spend $350 to upgrade my internal drive (authorized Mac repair, not to void the 3 yr warrenty) or do I spend that $$$ on upgrading to 8G Ram? Also I will not be doing any major editing... mostly 30 sec.-10min. web videos, no major effects, pretty basic stuff. Thanks in advance!

I am editing videos using Final Cut Pro v6, exporting them with video at 48KHZ, then transcoding them to flash using Squeeze; the audio is uncompressed. For some strange reason, when the videos are viewed on PCs, the sound doesn't play out of the PC Speaker. It only plays when you connect headphones or external speakers to the headphone jack. I can't figure out why. One thing I've noticed is that when I change the audio panning in FCP to '0,' I get no sound at all. Thanks for your advice.

My questions are:

1.) is there a particular format other than jpeg. that I should be using; or

2.) am I missing something here, and is there a specific best way of doing it in FCP?

We recently interviewed Michael Ciccone of Happy Days Films about the production of a new music video for Australian act, Graveyard Train. Well... the music video is finally complete and here for your viewing pleasure. You can catch the interview with Michael next week.

It was shot in Victoria, Australia on the RED camera and looks amazing!!

Who are Graveyard Train? Graveyard Train ripped chains and hammers from hell to forge Horror Country. They are the pioneers of a new genre that will make you cry and curse and scream. Ghost stories, murder ballads and tales of redemption are crooned through melodies plucked directly from the afterlife.

I've written a small blog about how i set up my commercial FCP suite. Its got some downloads of file structures and templates too.

Check it out here.

FCP Set-Up

"Getting your FCP suite set-up right is an important part of being a creative and efficient editor. It’s
a good idea to get a system in place from the word go so when you get
nice and busy, you can stay on top of the massive amounts of video,
audio and graphical assets you will acquire...."

Hope some of you find it useful.

Hey guys,
i hope i'm posting in the right section of the forum.
so, i made a commercial shooted in DVCPRO 720p, and i made all the work in a timeline with the same settings (DVCPRO HD 50, progressive etc.).
Now, since i need to make a master that's a 4:3 DV-Pal, i export my timeline and put it directly into a DV-pal one, so that it will directly match the frame size to a 4:3 letterbox. obviously there's a loss of quality since it's a DV timeline, but i can't really understand why the footage suddenly appears to be interlaced, even if the setting of the DV timeline is progressive. i mean, watching it in a TV monitor it has the smoothness of a progressive footage, but some strange lines (really similar to the ones of a bad interlaced) appears in the footage.
any idea and/or suggestion? what am i missing? thanks in advance!
michele

New tutorial from the team at Pro Juice!!

Arlo writes...

This is a trick that changed the way I wrote music.

With this simple example, you can see how electronic music is limitless. We don't have to make 'techno' that sounds like vintage synths and old drum machines, just because we write electronically. There are truly infinite textures to explore.

Check it out here

Don't think just because you work alone in a home studio, you have to make a certain genre of music. All the instruments in the world have been recorded at some point. So with a mixture or sampling, synthesis and creativity, you can turn your computer into a metal band, a Jazz Trio or an orchestra. That's when you can make true expression because, you're not bound by tone or genre.

 Hey everyone

I've created a great little tutorial that shows you how to blow out stage lights using the Knoll Light FX plug in FCP. Check it out and tell me what you think. We used the effect in a low budget music video that just didn't have enough lights on stage to get the effect we were after!!

You can see it here... http://www.projuice.org/Tutorial002.html

JoeLouw on "FCP vs Premiere"

I'm just starting off with my video career, As a professional photographer (use to Adobe Photoshop), I'm now looking into finding the best Video editing software. I read a few forums regarding this issue of FCP vs Premiere (one of them will be my choice) and it sounds it's more a PC vs Mac issue. What I could figure was that both FCP & Premiere are great, with the FCP exception working great on Mac (as it's ONLY for Mac).

I work on PC currently but is due for a major upgrade soon, my decision has been made it will be a Mac this time around, as all my friends tell my I could have just as well bought a Mac every time I build up my PC, because my PC's I've build up are so huge and expensive, and I use it only and ONLY for editing (not even e-mail & internet, for that I still have a separate PC) you might as well use Mac. So I’m going that route soon by buying the latest, biggest iMac. My question is I need to make a decision on an editing software package, FCP or Premiere. As I’ve hear great things from both, and also Premiere is NOW ready for Mac, I've not found anything comparing FCP & Premiere on the same platform (Mac) also you hear of big company’s using FCP on Mac AND/OR Avit on PC, so where is Premiere?

The thing is I need to buy the software and also get training on it, so I would like to make the right choice from the start and not waste any money as we are talking big bucks.Â

Thanks in advance for everyone’s help coming my way.

I am having a recurring problem with FCP.. Â When I go to capture, sometimes FCP will be unable to recognize my capture device (which is a Vixia HV30 camcorder) and then other times, it will time out and say that there is not enough or no information coming in from the capture device and it tells me to check and see if my capture device is playing anything or is connected properly (which it always is)... Â Keep in mind, there is absolutely nothing wrong my capture device... Â When I go to my other editing station, the device captures fine in FCP or iMovie and on the computer I have troubles with iMovie always works....

Any suggestions/help?Â
