Check your autosave vault and see if the latest project has the filter(s) applied. If not, your probably did something wrong. Although, it's kind of hard to mess up applying a filter to a clip.

I'm adding a 3-Way CC to clips in FCP and rendering them out. When done for the night I shut done computer and then open the next day only to find the 3-Way filter no longer attached to clips. 99% sure I save project before shutting down at night. Where could the problem be?

Don't move the camera (during the shoot). Shoot five separate passes, one for both of you playing each instrument, you can then composite the layers and add 'camera' motion in post. There are YouTube videos with some examples like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Lnw6NhY6j0

I am a student learning to use Final Cut Pro, and I am trying to obtain a certain "overlay " effect. I want to make a music video of myself playing three instruments and another person playing two, and we would all be in the same shot. I would have to play a drumset which is not movable. I have a green screen to use and I vaguely understanding keying. The school only supplies a kodak "Flip" style video camera, yet there are shoulder mounts to use if needed, if camera type matters. If anyone could walk me through how to achieve this, it would be greatly appreciated.

XDCam does work fine in FCP, but the editor should at least export out to ProRes. XDCam isn't a mastering codec.

Hi,

The JVC GY-HM100 records to the same XDCAM EX Codec as Sony's EX1 / EX3 etc (35 Mbps). The best quality setting for the HM100 (we have one) is 1080P25 (PAL), or the equivalent NTSC.

FCP 7 handles XDCAM EX really well and there's no real benefit to transcoding to ProRes for XDCAM EX. Even if you're going to final grade in Color you can send an XDCAM sequence to Color and bring back the renders as ProRes. I guess the only time this isn't true is if you'll be sending clips to Motion etc. then you might want to change your sequence settings to ProRes. XDCAM EX on a ProRes timeline works absolutely fine...

Your basic Mac Pro configuration is fine out of the box. You can always use more RAM, so that might be a consideration. The current iMacs are also pretty potent editing machines. Folks might like and enjoy the portability of using a Mac Book Pro, but unless portability and on-site editing is some mandatory thing, they are priced higher for less expandability than a desktop IMHO.

The speed of a dual quad, eight or 12 core is cool, but again not mandatory if you're trying to keep your costs down. There is, as I suspect you already know, a place on the Apple website where you can find refurbished units with a warranty and save a few bucks. They go fairly fast, though.

FCP, Mac Pro, some healthy capacity hard drives in the three internal bays, along with the 350 GB or other size system drive (I use Hitachi 1TB capacity drives for my other three slots for plenty of project capacity, and a 350 GB external Seagate for a graphics and music storage system) should put you in an excellent starting position to perform just about ANY editing task, or acquire just about ANY editing gig you could want.

Also, as you are probably aware, if you're a student there are some healthy student discounts available for hardware and software purchases. If you do not already have FCP, and want to get started the free iSeries programs that come with a Mac, while not all that and a bag of chips, can still accomplish some fairly sophisticated editing assignments.

30p, for me, is too jittery. I would shoot in 1080/60i (default) or 720/60p.

I would record 720p24

Considering the 1/4" sensors, my guess is the camera does some massive pixel shifting or something to record 1920X1080. However, the average Joe will probably think it looks fine...hardcore pros probably don't.

And 24p because it will maximize your recording time (as does recording 720p over 1080i)

So 720p24 in HQ mode is what I recommend.

Since you're going to record .mov files, you should be able to pull the right off the SDHC card and onto a hard drive. Then import those files into FCP. As I said before, drop a clip onto the timeline and FCP should ask you if you want the sequence settings to match the settings of that clip.

It all should be quite simple, but do a test first. Your job shouldn't be the first time you figure out the workflow. Shoot some stuff around the house...shoot any bs footage just for the sake of recording something...then figure out how to get the footage from the camera and into FCP

What resolution and frame rate did you record?

Did you record MPEG video or did you record Quicktime files? This camera was made with Final Cut in mind, which is why it can straight up record .mov files.

If you recorded .mov files, just bring them into FCP. When you drop your first clip in your timeline, FCP will ask if you want your sequence settings to match your clip settings. Obviously, click Yes.

If you recorded MPEG files, the best thing to do is convert them to ProRes with Compressor (unless you can do it in FCP with the Log and Transfer tool).

So you have to decide what format you're going to shoot first. Ya can't just go out, mindlessly press record, and then come to your computer and expect people will be able to guide you. If YOU don't go out and shoot with the necessary knowledge for editing, how are we going to know?

oops...didn't answer your other question.

Umm, sure I guess you could burn out the FW or USB ports. That's not very common in my opinion though. The reason you want a deck is because you can wear out the heads if you have a tape based camera. A deck is more robust. And a deck is just another term for VTR. We just say deck because we like to confuse people and make ourselves feel smart. We're such decks aren't we?

The type of deck you want depends on the type of tape you recorded. There are decks for Beta tapes, DVCPro HD tape, miniDV tape, whatever. Here's a link to B&H:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2%7C0&ci=2129&N=4294545363

If you are recording to solid state media, i personally don't think it's THAT big of a deal to use your camera to ingest. It's nice to have a card reader if you're shooting out in the field and need an assistant to offload footage while you continue shooting.

"is there someplace online that actually explains compression settings and teaches you when to use what settings on FCP or using the mac compressor"

Hmm....sounds like something good for me to write about since I've been horrible at keeping up with my blog.

Look up the difference between Long GOP and I-frame compression. Some cameras record Long GOP based formats, such as HDV and XDCam, while others record I-frame based formats, like DVCPro HD.

I-frame codecs are more edit friendly, but Long GOP takes up less hard drive space.

Your camera, if I remember correctly, shoots HDV. So converting to ProRes gets you out of Long GOP compression (and there are some other benefits as well). When you compressed for the web, you probably converted to a codec that DOES use Long GOP compression. so it was a smaller file size and more web friendly.

....that should get you off on the right foot, at least until I write more about it on my blog

I recently got a Canon Vixia HF S10 and am using it with Final Cut Pro. I've learned a lot looking things up online although I don't entirely understand them (for example...I changed the settings to prores, but I'm not so sure why, I compressed to a quicktime movie and entered new settings that meant nothing to me because thats what I supposedly had to do in order to post it HD on to vimeo.) But at least I know what to do even if I don't know why.....question one...is there someplace online that actually explains compression settings and teaches you when to use what settings on FCP or using the mac compressor. I've found tutorials that give you a recipe of what to do, but they don't really try to explain why its necessary. It'd be nice to be able to learn what every setting means so that I can use my own judgement for specific situations and not have to look up the compression setting recipe.

Question two: (the probably more naive question) I've seen on this board people saying that hooking up a camcorder to a computer through a usb or firewire can burn out the connection overtime and to use a deck for this purpose. What exactly is a deck, where would I get one, and what type of deck do I get (if there are a lot of different options)?

Thanks for any help as always!

Sony Vegas 9. Amazing program. Spend the money, learn the program, get practice and you will never regret it ever. As an alternative, Sony Moviemaker - about $100. Then you can upgrade to Vegas 9 if you want.

There is no substitute for quality and performance. Just isn't.

Macs aren't that blu-ray friendly. However, Final Cut Pro 7 will allow you to burn HD video onto a standard DVD. If you have FCP 6 instead, you can export your HD footage and then dump it into Toast Titanium Pro, which also allows you to burn HD content onto a standard DVD. Yes, your standard DVD burner will do just fine, but remember you won't get much video onto it. I'd say your 30 minute video might be cutting it close. There's the little help I can offer. Good Luck!
