I recommend the Olympus LS-20M ($234 at Amazon) or the discontinued Kodak Zi8 ($355 at Amazon). Both have external mic jacks and both record to MPEG.

Good luck with your decision,

I have been going crazy trying to find a HD pocket cam that has a external mic input that does NOT record in MOV format. I have researched several vendors who advertise that thier camers shoots in MPEG-4 only to find out it is a .mov file. I do not care about the Apple PC argument. so please do not respond to this if you are an Apple user and are offended that I do not want to use .mov files. I just have a unique situation and would rather use MP4's without having to convert.

If anybody knows of a 1080 Pocket cam with an external mic in please let me know it is much appreciated. Thank you!

Well, I am not that professional but I'd like recommend a Samsung S16 HD camcorder. It offers an internal/external mic and wind cut. Plus, it can be record up to 2hrs and many effects on the cam. Maybe it is way to much cost on. However, it would be a perfect gear to capture the yoga if you're looking for HD.

Here's a link to clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPqhC8IAJuY

Hope you find an answer.

I was not able to view your videos on your website (short of buying them). I personally use a Canon HV40 because it does HDV and has an external mic input. Another important feature is that you can buy wide angle adoptor which I think will be useful for the kind of videos you will be taking. I use both a lav mic and a shotgun mic with the camcorder depending on what I am shooting. If you intend to anotate the video while you are shooting someone else doing the yoga exercize, then a lav mic could work best. If you need to videotape and record the person doing the exercise, then a shotgun mic would be your answer.

If you will be videotaping yourself doing the exercizes, then I would not use the lavalier as it would pick up too much noise. I would use the shotgun mic. The HV40 comes with a remote contol that would be useful in this case.

If you want to go tapeless, I would go for the Canon HF series.

She said her camera does not have external mic capabilities so a BeachTek adaptor isn't going to do the trick. The Zoom series of standalone digital recorders are awesome - even the H2, but she also indicated she'd like to eliminate time-consuming work in post by adding narrative, so this wouldn't necessarily address that concern either.

So, depending on the available editing system/program, camera replacement and mic acquisition, this will be easier, or more difficult and time-consuming if the right elements are not addressed. Actually, a headset mic system, preferably wired, would do well to capture narrative as the video footage is being shot, and feeding directly into a mic-friendly unit.

I have the Zoom H4 and can recommend it. You could record the audio directly to it while the camera runs and synch the audio in your editor the way Brian says above. I bought my Zoom on ebay and it came with a 1GB SD card.

The best camera is the one you have.

It's not uncommon to use a separate audio recorder with your cam. The most popular is
the Samson Zoom H4. Drop the audio and the video in the same editing software and match the two together.

If you're not interested in the additional work added to your production with the above method you can always attach the BeachTek DXA-5D where you connect your camera to an external audio microphone.

Hello, there are a number of excellent options in the Canon, Panasonic and Sony environment. I am partial to the Canon primarily because for the longest time IMHO Canon has produced superior lens quality, and it's stabilization technology is unsurpassed.

There are many options, however, including a discontinued but still obtainable Canon HV40, latest of several iterations that started with a very popular HV20, HV30... in the series. High Definition with a MiniDV tape format and a lot of useful options.

Currently, in the $2K range is the Panasonic HMC40. I am not familiar with any/many of the consumer models in any of these brands, and know nothing at all regarding the current line of Sony equipment.

Also, a search here for camera recommendations worded in a number of ways will get you the previous responses to this perennial inquiry. But I think also you could come up with some info via Google, doing a search for consumer, prosumer and/or professional high definition camcorders.

My personal preference in current technology is cameras that use the SDHC or other memory card variations, primarily because it is the direction things are going, as well as reducing costs and camera noise inherent with units that have tape drive or hard disk drive systems. Solid state = no moving parts, less noise, and lower manufacturing/repair costs as well as longevity.

Sony, Sennheiser, Samson, Azden and a host of other companies produce a wide array of wireless AND/OR wired mic systems that will work nicely - starting at under $100 and going out of sight. A LOT of people here will pipe in, all of them with their favorites, their favorite computer editing systems and programs, their preferences for cameras, etc. It will eventually give you PLENTY to research on your own.

Meanwhile there are also a host of sensors, CCD and CMOS, single and multiple-chip/sensor, recording medium, lens quality and format issues you might need to research as well to determine what will work best for you within the range of your personal budget.

Is there a way to view the videos without having to sign up - I couldn't easily find a way to do so without joining up. OK, Desktop Yoga 2 worked to give me an idea. Well done, good narration and imaging.

Good luck, Earl

I am currently shooting yoga videos and using a Canon Rebel 1di which does not have external mic capabilities.

I am now looking for a new camera and wireless mic combo. I am thinking of a lapel (lavalier) mic and want to keep the HD quality that my Canon currently has.. Not sure if I should stick with Canon, if I should use tapeless.. So many options!

Thank you all for your suggestions!! I considered every one of them. The simplest of them (just shoot without an external mic) won't work for me because the camera will be positioned at a distance and behind a teleprompter. The Zoom was a little pricey for my budget, but reading about it taught me what to look for in the less-expensive recorders. So what did I decide?

I decided to go with a .wav format digital voice recorder, but new ones are hard to find. It seems the popular ones have all gone to MP3 or WMA, which I now know to avoid. Olympus made a .wav recorder a few years ago that received excellent reviews, but they are no longer available... until I searched eBay. I found exactly the one I wanted. Now I just have to win it. And I'll spend the days until it arrives practicing editing in Pinnacle, building my teleprompter, and sewing light-blocking curtains for my office (since I can only get the lighting just right after the sun has gone down.)

Thanks again for all your suggestions! When I'm done, I'll report back with a link to show you the results.

I've had decent results in the past recording to a small digital device I have and laying the audio into the timeline in Pinnacle. You can cut and paste the audio around just like you do the video. You can just turn off the audio that runs with the video originally and use your "new" sound. I used one of these, with a cheapo $4.00 ebay lapel microphone, and it works pretty good.

http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/2581_digital_recorder_ws-550m_21302.htm

I still use it to record quick sound bites, song ideas, etc. Pretty handy.

I've used an H4 Zoom on several projects with great success. A couple of tips. Record in WAV format, if you record in .mp3 you have a loss of quality and a greater tendancy to get drift, especially if you are synching voice. Use a clapboard or just have the talent clap hands sharply to give you a nice spike in the waveform to work synch with. Shoot in short segments, both to have some shot variety and have the ability to resynch for each scene,

Good Luck!

See if using a Zoom H2 or H4 standalone digital recorder in conjunction with your videotaping to the Sanyo can help you. I am not a Pinnacle software or PC user, but most of these programs/systems/platforms offer some kind of ability to sync digital audio files with your footage. A Zoom might be an effective companion to your camera. (there are related posts on Videomaker that can better inform you of the Zoom recorders), and you may also go to http://www.zoomh2.com for information.

I'm preparing to produce instructional videos to post at my website. It's related to my business, so it must look and sound good (not professional, but very good.) I'm technically competent, but I got excited and jumped in too fast. I bought a Sanyo Xacti ZH1 on Woot (digital camcorder/camera). I focused too much on the price, and I missed the fact that there's no audio input port. (I assumed that was a standard feature!)

Question: What's the best way to work around my poor equipment choice? I'll be using Pinnacle software to edit the videos, so could I just plug a mic into my laptop and lay the audio over the video later? If so, are there any special mic requirements/suggestions? Any other ideas? (Please don't tell me to sell the camcorder on eBay.) I greatly appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,

I'm new so please bear with me - I'm just learning a lot of this stuff. I'm making a horror movie in a mostly outdoor setting during winter. Some scenes will be in the day some at night. There will be lots of running, dolly shots, DIY steadycam use, etc. Obviously it will be cold. We're in Michigan. I have about 1000 bucks to buy an HD camera to shoot it with. I want it to be a Hard Drive Camera (had some bad experiences with mini DV) that I can hook a boom mic to. A standard XLR jack would be nice, but I'm willing to entertain other connection types. I'm not an expert on camcorder audio to be honest. I'm also looking for something that will make it as painless as possible to get the video files into Final Cut.

So far I'm considering either the JVC Everio HD6 (or 7 if the price is right) or the Sony HDR-XR200V. Any advice on which is better? I hear that the Everio records in a weird format that might be hard for me to get into Final Cut. How bad will it be? I have Mac Linux and Windows computers in my arsenal. All have fairly meaty processors. Any suggestions for other cameras within my price range? What kind of cold weather troubles should I look out for with what I buy?

I don't remember the model numbers of the current offerings (probably different than US model numbers, anyway), but Canon now offers several moderately priced camcorders with 3.5mm stereo mic input and audio monitoring via the AV output jack with appropriate adapters. One decent mic is the Audio-Technica ATR-25, a stereo electret model which will feed both channels, available for less than $50 US. I recommend using a right-angle adapter with any 3.5mm mic connector plugged into a camcorder, as a cable or adapter sticking out of the jack is an accident waiting to happen. Also, a mono-to-stereo adapter between mic cable and right angle adapter will allow you to use a monaural mic, like a lavalier or interview handheld, sending audio to both channels, not just the left. If you use any mic with XLR or 1/4" plug connector, use an adapting cable to step it down into the 3.5mm right angle connector.

Hi guys

I'm a video journalist working in the UK. We currently use a palm-sized Panasonic SDR H40 (Hard disk camcorder, not HighDef) to produce our video news and features, and since it produces good pictures (3CCDs) and .mpg format video, it's quite simple to work with. Since I produce video for the web in .flv format, there's no point getting footage in High Def as it's not for broadcast; it would only be heavily compressed into the .flv format anyway.

The only problems with the camera are that

a) there's no jack for headphones or external mic

b) outside, the audio is often rubbish, especially if there's traffic around

We're now looking for a new camcorder, can you recommend one in the £350/$500 price range with an external mic jack?

Or would you recommend trying a workaround with a digital voice recorder hooked up to an external mic?

Any suggestions welcome

If you want to have a look at the kind of news we produce go here: http://www.salfordonline.com

Since you specified cheap, I'll recommend the DXG-595v. You can order it through Walmart for under $200. That way if there's something wrong with it you can just return it.

They are also available from B&H for about the same price. It will digest just about any SDHC card though the factory only rates it up to cards with a capacity of 8GB.

As far as performance, don't expect it to be a Canon or a Sony, but the images are pretty clear and it shoots 1080 at 30 progressive (720 at 60 progressive).

It outputs files to .MOV format that's easily recognizable by most NLEs, I use Magix 14+ and am able to mix and match footage from all my cameras with no trouble at all.Â

I got one to shoot cleaner keys against a greenscreen as a supplement to my standard def Canon cameras and have actually started using the DXG to shoot everything.

Like most cheapy cams there's no mic input but I record everything to a separate source anyway, so it's not been an issue.

DXG doesn't have the world beating reputation of some of the other companies, but to give you an example of what it can do, I used it to shoot a short feature and got second runner up in the local film festival. I never let on that I was using a cheap cam like that, but there was a lot of satisfaction in beating out all the FX7s and XHA1s that the other entrants were banging on about.

One last pitch for the 595v, I managed to drop it off the tripod (never trust the "click" when locking the plate) and it fell about 5 feet to a concrete floor. Still works just fine.

It sounds like there is something wrong with your camera speaker. I wouldn't worry about it too much if the sound is fine in your computer.

I am using a Sony HDR-FX1E Camcorder with external mic. My question is - why is that when I play back on the camera VCR there is either no sound or the sound is broken. But when I down load to my computer for editing the sound is perfect??? I don't have this problem when I use the on-board mic.

I am puzzledÂ
