I think your preset is just fine. I would only change "Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 1 Pass" to 2 Pass, it really improves your video and "Keyframe Distance: 24" to 1.

Exporting Footage: How do I get the Best Quality?

Hi everyone!

I have a somewhat broad but nonetheless nagging question to ask. What is the best format/settings to export a final video to be used for high quality playback?

For example If I have some 1080P HD footage that I want to export for playback on a computer (to be played on a DLP projector). What is the best format to preserve all of the quality but still be playable? Formats like apple animation preserve quality but will bog down almost any machine.

Specifically I use Adobe media encoder but I am up for any suggestions of other software.

This is what I am currently outputting all my video as:

Main: H.264
Multiplexer: MP4
Standard: NTSC
Resolution: 1920 x 1080
FPS: 24
Field Order: Progressive
Pixel Aspect: Square
Profile: Main
Level: 3.1
Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 1 Pass
Target Bitrate [Mbs]: 7
Maximum Bitrate [Mbs]:8
Keyframe Distance: 24

I look forward to all of your input,

Hmm...converting a source that using Long GOP compression to a format that also uses Long GOP compression may be the issue.

I would try exporting your HDV sequence as DVCPro HD to get into an i-frame codec. Then compress that new file to MPEG-2.

25 hours doesn't sound right at all.

Hi. I regularly use Encore CS4 for DVD authoring, from Premiere Pro sequences. Usually, I do it in "automatic", so the application decides the transcoding bitrate and other parameters. A 90 minutes DVD usually last around 5 hours.

However, I was not satisfied with the results. I shoot HDV and the quality of raw footage and DVD were totally different. The DVD just don't look too bad, but not near professional.

My footage is most live dance events, so fast motion is the norm.

I tested with manual transcoding parameters: VBR, 2 pass, target 6, max 8 min 2, and the process took 25 hours in a Core 2 Quad with 8 Gb RAM for 90 minutes video.

I am surprise for the time, considering the system is quite powerfull. Is this normal?

OK... I don't believe the problem has to do with the export. I have a sequence in the timeline. It's video that was recorded on a Canon XL2 on MiniDV tape. This is the video formatting...

I only hear audio coming out of the left channel. When I open the audio in the preview pane, I see the Pan is set to -1. If I move it to 0, I can't hear any audio, but I still see levels. This only seems to happen when I record with the XL2 and the lavaliere mic, and the result is that the audio won't play when I export the file or when I print to video.

Hello everyone,

I am brand new to this forum as of like 5 minutes ago. I have a project I need to get finished and ran into a encoding/compiling error.

Here's the deal:

I am making a wedding video that I filmed. I would say 85% of it was shot onto mini HDV while the rest was done with a camera that uses AVCHD. The problem came when I exported the ceremony clip. We shot the ceremony with both cameras (both formats). CS4 let me bring import both into my timeline and i worked with both without a problem. Come time to encode and I get an "unknown error". I realized that it was saving the video up to the point where the AVCHD format first shows up. Sooo i copied my work and in the copy took out all the AVCHD material and walla .. it encoded.

My question/problem:

Is there any export settings or sequence settings that will allow me to have both formats in my timeline and still be able to encode the movie/scene? Or is this even my problem? Feel free to let me know what I am doing wrong or where i misspoke; I have been away from the movie editing hobby for a long time..

thanks,

I will have to try this next time the issue occurs. @XTR-91, yeah the PC speakers are working. This doesn't affect all videos that we have posted online, just certain videos recorded on MiniDV with a Canon XL2. We use a lav mic plugged into the front mic jack (1/8").

Thanks for the responses. I will followup on this thread at a later date.

Does anything else play on your PC speakers? This could possibly be a sound processing problem due to the electrical specs (e.g. impedance) of your computer's speakers. Your PC's speakers may also have been damaged, having an internal problem of their own.

Yeah, that sounds like you didn't export your video clips out with .WAV audio files. If the PC using Media Player either doesn't have AIFF selected as playable or it doesn't have that audio codec then you get nada. If you exported your clip in QT with AIFF files and the PC has QT player on it, it should play uncompressed audio with no prob. BTW, what video format an audio format did you export out to?

Have you tried changing your audio from uncompressed (probably AIFF) to something like MP3? I'm wondering if the PCs you're playing the video are expecting something different when it comes to uncompressed audio.

I am editing videos using Final Cut Pro v6, exporting them with video at 48KHZ, then transcoding them to flash using Squeeze; the audio is uncompressed. For some strange reason, when the videos are viewed on PCs, the sound doesn't play out of the PC Speaker. It only plays when you connect headphones or external speakers to the headphone jack. I can't figure out why. One thing I've noticed is that when I change the audio panning in FCP to '0,' I get no sound at all. Thanks for your advice.

Norman,

I have succeeded in getting the best quality for my vids. I am currently using Corel video studio 12, since I find it the easiest to use. I put the video togther and create is as an ACVHD in 1920 format. From there I encode it with TMPGEnc 4.0 as an Mpeg2. I do not know why this comes out better for the video when it is burned to DVD then just going to straight MPEG2 from Corel, but it does.

I want to keep the originals secure....if I upload to YouTube or Vimeo they would be out there for the world to use without subscribing to the website. I am having luck with Mpeg 2 for the DVD, not fantastic quality, but very good. As far as the online viewing, I am still trying different types of rendering, it may end up being MP4 for the online viewing. I was hoping for a one size fits all, but it looks like I am going to have to render 3 copies (online, DVD and IPOD) for each video I upload.

Just a question:

Have you considered uploading to Vimeo or YouTube in HD, and then letting people stream it from there?

Also, who do you use as your host?

Norman,

I am creating a fitness website that will be a pay for site. I will be uploading weekly workout routines for stream and download. I have unlimited bandwith, so space is not an issue. At this point, I am not looking to go into hard copy distribution, and know that by putting my videos out there they are going to be flying all over the place.

The way I run my workouts are a 2 minute set, with a 30 second break. So I am recording in 2 minute blocks that I do not need to edit. I will assemble the 2 minute blocks with a 30 second break screen that will discuss the next exercise. Each routine is 25 minutes in length.

I am currently fiming in 24Mbps and a frame rate of PF30 (which I may change to 60i). I ultimately want the quality to look like a DVD, not a Youtube video. This is going to be organic, so I am not looking for "spectacular", just really good.

May I please ask what your target market is?

Are you looking to do this all for free, and to carry the bandwidth yourself? Or are you considering e-sales (either at cost, or for profit), as well as hard copy distro?

Norman,

Still working on it...I uploaded the video as H.264 and am able to view it on my PC. However, I am unable to burn it to a DVD. I am researching different programs that will burn mp4.

The real issue is that all of this has to be easy for the people that will be downloading and burning the video files. I cannot expect the average consumer to download additional programs on their PC just so they can view and brun my videos. With that being said, I want to be able to provide the best quality product that will be able to be viewed on most PC's without taking up too much RAM. I also need the DVD to be viewable on most DVD players, again, I do not want to make the consume hunt for solutions on how to make the video work, I would rather make thier process painless....

More to come....
