I started off in this work fixing audio for video as I run a small audio recording studio that does mostly spoken word work. I'd be interested in this.

A few q's that others might like to know:

What's the pay/hour?

How will files be delivered?

How often (per month) do you have these jobs?

Thanks for putting out the opportunity!

Hi,

I'm looking for a couple of videographers.

From time to time we get asked to do video editing work. It would normally consist of simply stripping out an English-language voice over from a digital video and adding a new language VO. Because most of this work is for corporate videos (as opposed to television or film work), it does not need to be lip-sync'd. We paragraph-synchronise the audio during recording. There may, however, be a
little audio (or video) tweaking to be done (by you) to some of the start and end points for each phrase / paragraph / scene (eg. time-stretch, tiny cuts).

Work would be on a per-project basis, from your home / studio

Pay per-hour.

We usually do not give much advance notice, so you would need to be generally available on a day-to-day basis for an hour or two at a time. If this is not the case, please do not apply.

Is this kind of work something you are capable of, are available for, and would be interested in doing?

Thanks,

On ubuntu the best editor is Cinelerra, its the best option for the ubuntu O/S. Its an advanced editor. A more basic editor for ubuntu is Kdenlive, which is good too. I recommend you get a windows or apple O/S and use for editing. Linux just doesn't have any really good editing software yet. Most of the avaliable editors crash, have no people that use them that can help you, and just can't compare to windows and/or apples editoring software.

Hey there Albert,

I have looked long and hard to find video software for Linux that was mature enough to use for professional video production. You don't say what type of software you are looking for, but here's my two cents worth. As a video editor/compositor; Cinelerra is a powerful professional tool, yet it is hard to install properly, and even then all features may not work well or at all on Ubuntu. It does have the advantage of using the Cinelerra authored Quicktime4Linux library which works well on .mov files with lots of codec support. I have used it professionally but with much anguish. Lots of tutorials (no matter what your experience level, go through the beginners tuts as they provide much needed info) and there is at least one repository which has a Debian package and several Ubuntu packages if you look in the Ubuntu forum. I found the best way was to compile my own, it worked better on my PC. Lots of tutorials both video and otherwise on the web.

Kino will import and export .mov files but will not give you much use other than straight cut editing and some very standard looking wipes, plus a few simple effects. It can be a little confusing on how to use it but at least try it out. When I was working in Linux I used it mainly to capture and to convert files from one format to another. There are some tutorials if you think it's good enough for the use you're putting it to.

Blender has some new editing features if you have the fortitude to go through the learning curve, but the editing feature is rather immature just yet, and a little harder to use than say Premiere. The compositing features available to you in Blender are enormous, but again that annoying learning curve.

Everything else I've used on Linux in the past has had the misfortune of being Windows Movie Maker quality, and perhaps more immature than that.

Give these a try, you may find what you're looking for. Hope this helped.

Earl that is a great and valuable post. I find myself right now not going out and marketing my services for short commercials for the web to independent professionals and small businesses because I know right now i don't know what my potential clients would scoff at. I just did a 30 second event commercial for $75 and spent about 12 hours on it because I had to create from scratch and try and match up everything with the theme of the event which meant "thought" time on what backgrounds and stock design elements i had that would go well with it. Felt like I was screwing myself and don't want to do that again.

I think thats part of the reason I favor doing projects that I create and set a flat charge knowing the amount of money I want to make on a per hour basis. I never thought about taking into account the money spent on stock footage and elements. Those definitely will be part of my cost going forward. Thanks alot Earl.

I'll be using software for editing diving movies, so I need something powerful but not too complicated... I find iMovie, which accepts MOV file, simple and reliable for this kind of work... Unfortunately, cant use iMovie on Ubuntu...

Carolyn, you have gotten some input here, some a bit ambiguous other a bit more informative, but overall IMHO it boils down to not what others might be charging or what the industry as a whole might be billing, but what YOU determine is the hourly rate you want to target to make your business profitable, and of course what the market will bear.

The bottom line is that different people have different notions of value, budgetary considerations and what their needs, wants or desires dictate, not always on a FACTUAL representation of dollars = product or in reverse.

While I DO offer flat fees, and while there ARE some exceptions to my own rules for pricing based on unique circumstances of any given gig or production, I essentially base all my income generating efforts on the fact that for MY business purposes, in order to feel that I AM making a profit for the hours I put in, that I am not screwing, nor am I getting screwed by the prices I quote, my dollar value per hour has been based on $70 per hour.

This is the formula I use when quoting hourly or flat fee jobs. I simply try to determine based on experience and/or research to the best of my ability, how much time (realistically) it will take for me to produce a given project ... such as yours, for example.

YOU put a LOT of time, effort and energy into the preparation, planning, creation and completion of that project. You gave it the hours IT needed, rather than restricting yourself to what might be "practical" or not. In your professional creative opinion you set aside practical business formulas and adapted the "whatever it takes" approach to generating the closest thing to a creative masterpiece you felt capable of. Darn the costs, in other words. And that happens a LOT with all of us creative types.

What sinks ships is the constant and ongoing battle between practical business application and creative artistic results. It is difficult for us all, and downright impossible for ONLY practical, or ONLY creative to find a happy medium, a point of compromise where profits VS product weigh balance.

This is likely your primary predicament. Right?

So, factor in ALL the information you have about what it costs you to do such a product.

How many hours you put into it and be sure to include ALL "thought" hours, planning hours, production hours, research hours, interview and consultation hours, driving time, EVERYTHING!

How much did you spend? Backgrounds, copyright free music, but still music you had to pay for, art work, outside costs for any and all materials involved.

There's actually much much more such as insurance, licenses and fees, even meals you had to purchase outside coming or going from a source or fact-finding mission, and the list is sometimes infinite.

It takes ALL this divided by (on average) a 40-hour week, to come up with "realistically" what you need, as a business, to make hourly to cover you costs. And this hasn't even included what, if anything, you'd like to draw as a salary, or what, after salary, you'd like to generate as a profit. These are all unique and different numbers. Yikes! Right?

Well, you do the math based on your REALITIES. I did mine, and even though there's admittedly some "fudging" going on, I arrived at $70 per hour, or $2,800 for a 40-hour workweek. The other side of THAT coin is I NEED to make that consistently, week after week ... and with today's economy, the rocky boat of independent business operations, fluctuation of business, it is virtually impossible to guarantee THAT will occur EVERY SINGLE WEEK, without fail.

So, what do I do on off weeks. First, I try to not panic because I know from many years in the business that on average, end of year, I WILL have acquired the needed average hourly rate. But keeping track of this allows me to UP or ADJUST my prices along the ride, to yield to bargaining pressure when NO business is coming in at all, or to take other directions that will kick off more business, generate more income or balance my bottom line. I have to do this monthly, or occasionally quarterly, to assess where I am, how I stand, and what I need to do to control the downward spiral, what I can invest in, what I need to do next to keep expansion (if that's what I'm after) or steadily maintain my current levels of business ... you get the idea.

Find that hourly rate you need for your purposes, then use it when factoring in what it actually takes you, time-wise, to do a project such as the one you used as a sample here, figure out what you can afford to concede to creativity and the extra hours necessary to accomplish that level and leave it off the books, then quote a flat rate that comes close to what you can afford to to invest and what future clients perceive that they can afford to pay.

Keep in mind, also, that perceived value is your friend, or your enemy. A client will ALWAYS come up with the money for something he/she wants, will always have excuses for not having the money to purchase a product or service they do not perceive as a "must have" item.

Thanks for the answers. I have been trying to find similar services in NYC but it is very difficult to find prices for this exact type of thing. I feel like I've looked everywhere, but it's possible I missed a few things. A grand a day is what a lot of freelancers charge for small productions, but I wasn't sure if it would be the same for just editing projects that were already shot, and for families instead of professionals.

I do think flat rate is the best way to go, and i did end up charging 1,000 (gave my friend a 20% discount) but I wanted to make sure that wasn't too high or too low. She was very happy with it and seemed fine with the price and has started telling her friends so I think it could possibly be the magic price! Though I wouldn't mind charging a bit more in the future...

You'll see freelance one man banders all over the country for a grand a day. This is what makes flat bids so easy... easy math. You just multioply by how long it'll take ya. Speed is important when it comes to offering flat bids. It's how you'll get your hourly rate up to where it needs to be without running them off withtwhat they may see is too high of a rate. Tell someone 4 grand though and that's something they can grasp if not use to purchasing video services.

Hi everyone,

I am new to freelancing and NYC so I am having a hard time coming up with figures to charge potential clients. I just finished a project for a friend and was hoping other professionals could take a look and be honest with what I should/could charge for something like this. Either hourly, or as a package deal. I am in desperate need of some real numbers that match my skill level and services provided!

The project involved me taking 8 hours (10 tapes) of home videos (poorly shot/lit) and editing them into a 30 minute long montage in chronological order. This also included color correcting, adding music, cleaning up audio and adding basic titles throughout. This took me roughly 30 hours.

She also wanted a short music video with selected clips that she could share on YouTube and Facebook. This is the link to that, so you can get an idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDyvmjWFk7o This one took me about 6 hours. The longer version looked similar in style, (without the moving picture effect), and also included audio.

If anyone has any accurate figures, ideas or honest advice I would greatly appreciate it! Keep in mind that I am in NYC, so if you live elsewhere then please let me know how the market there compares if have any idea. THANKS!!!

Jesse,

On the one hand, you're in the place where industry is most predominant so that's an edge. Really, it's all about you continuing to do the work and making connections in the industry where you are. The disadvantage you face is there are truckloads of experienced editors already trolling about for the limited gigs and there's a tidal wave of fresh out of school grads and people looking to do what you do coming from other industries. It's all going to boil down to you having current work to show, networking as best you can, going to expos and the like to meet and greet with others in the biz and teaming up with up and coming indie projects. The result will be your name and work being on people's minds which when an opportunity presents itself, you'll be ready to take advantage of it. That isn't the traditional way of doing things (go to school, pound the pavement, get a job) because for now those days are over.

Main thing is to not lose heart if you truly want to stay and succeed in this industry. It's nothing against you per se. It's just the times we live in. The shark tank just got bigger to accommodate more people is all. You'll just have to swim harder and perhaps longer to get out. So in the meantime, do what you gotta' do to maintain and keep your skills sharp and your eyes peeled!

jesse1469, as usual EarlC has shared lots of great info that should be very helpful to you or anyone else in the same position. The only thing that I can add is in reference to your video. Great job demonstrating your skills. The only thing that I might suggest is to hold on the contact information at the end for a little longer time making it easier for someone that is watching it to be able to write it down. This doesn't seem like too much to ask of a prospective employer but if they get bunches of videos to review anything that causes them extra time or effort might be just enough to toss yours. This will make it as easy as possible for your prospective employer. Good luck and keep trying.

The success stories I've read and heard of guys getting a break nearly always seem to be connected to extreme perseverance — where they continuously hone and polish their reel until it slaps people in the face. It is daunting, to say the least, seeing some of what is being done in the "I want to get my foot in the door" arena, and it is tough to generate a reel that will float to the top with all the competition, especially anywhere near the West Coast and L.A. area. However, shear perseverance ... sending out that demo reel that you're constantly honing and polishing, tightening and making pop, adding new and better stuff as you can acquire it, is what's going to make it happen. That and even MORE patience than you've already exhibited.

Another way, of course is to keep uploading your stuff, new and improved, on YouTube and sending those links out; setting up a connection on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and other sites where you can also hammer on your demo reel's existence and links, and update continuously when you have something new and improved. Join all the forums you can and showcase your work and your qualifications (and experience when and where you can get it) — especially LAFCPUG and similar sites where people like you are congregating and sharing information and comments.

Then take whatever days you can, and armload of demo reel DVDs, make a plan to hit as many places you can find in L.A. and wherever else you wish to try, hit their doors, ignore the front guard (receptionists) if you can and insist that you'll wait until they close and lock the doors if SOMEBODY in a position to make a decision to give you a chance will only give you five minutes of their time ... or less.

Be bold, be aggressive, be polite but insistent. When you get an audience don't hesitate, stammer or look at the floor or wring your hands or genuflect USE DIRECT EYE CONTACT AND HOLD IT. But by the same token don't over act your confidence or come off cocky or haughty unless of course you have every reason to believe you're the next GREAT EDITOR and have the demo to prove it.

Then explain that you KNOW for a fact most of these houses have need for "ground floor" interns and you also know that there are labor laws and other legal considerations that may or may not make it THAT easy for them to accommodate someone like you who is willing to be there for as long as it takes. But assure them that you WANT a chance and if the only way to get one is to start out gofering and pouring coffee for some jerk (well, don't actually USE that term) head honcho, then you're their person.

Whatever it takes, then do it again until you find a door with a crack in it big enough for you to crawl through, then stick like Gorilla Glue until they let you sit behind an editing system and show them something.

This would be MY approach.

You could also appeal to the HUGE number of independent professional video services providers all over the West Coast who are focused specifically on weddings, and others who focus on events, performances, small business and commercial productions, and offer them your internship proposition. A lot of these guys and gals might be a bit more approachable and give you some editing time that, while it isn't in the entertainment or high end commercial industry, still provides you with additional experience, honed skills, material to improve your demo reel (get their permission and make that part of your "working a free internship" proposal of course) and possible connections with others who might know somebody who knows somebody ... if you know what I mean.

Hi everyone,

I have been looking
for a position as an intern or editor’s assistant in Los Angeles for about 3
years now, since I graduated from college with a degree in Media Arts, and I’m
starting to run out of ideas and become frustrated as to why nobody will hire
me. As far as experience goes, I have worked
at two tv stations and on the behind the scenes featurette of a large scale
film. I know Final Cut, Premiere, After
Effects and Photoshop, and spent about 2k this year taking an AVID course and
getting an AVID technical certification. I have a subscription to
Media-match.com and get job alerts sent to my email. I’ve been applying to
about 15 online jobs a week but I never get any responses. Lately I have been
calling post-houses off LA411.com and cold calling for basic internships in order to
learn a little more and just get my foot in so I can start on the ground floor
of a company and grow with the position. I have offered to work for free for a trial
period at all the places I’ve called…After about 2 months, I’ve had one
interview but no call back, and most of the people I talk to seem to just be either
incredibly flaky, or just giving me the run around. I also have a demo reel.... http://www.vimeo.com/17581129, but
after all the positions I’ve applied to it only has 8 views?

Is there something I am doing wrong or missing?

How am I supposed to break into this industry if I don’t
know anybody and nobody will take a chance on me?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

I am reading everything you guys write here and I'm envy. I take a lot of videos of the family (with my Flip HD) but it's juts
dusting on my hard drive. I barely watch it and never share it. I tried editing once or twice but gave up pretty quickly. I was told about magisto which is suppose to be for people like me (busy? lazy!) but when I get in http://www.magisto.com I can only register for an invite. I don't know anyone who
can send me an invite and I don't know when will they open their site
for everyone cause now it's in closed alpha or beta or something. Can
anyone here help? Ever heard of these guys?

I am having problems with Movie Edit Pro 14. When I try to burn a disc program made up of several photos, songs, and movies, my computer shuts down. I am running Windows XP with a 2.8 GHz pentium processor. I replaced the power supply, beefed up my HD (500GB), increased my memory to 3 GB of RAM, and tried a different DVD burner. No dice.

In the burn window, there's plenty of space on the DVD. When I cut the DVD into several smaller disc projects that are 6-7 minutes long I can get it to burn. But, they have to be less than 500 MB. That seems like a waste of space on a DVD and a lot of DVDs to watch to enjoy a slideshow/movieshow of my vacation. Any advice?

PS I tried EMAGIX, but they want me to pay a fee to get tech support as I have had the program for about a year now.

Thanks!

Depending on what converting program you have and what system you are editing on will make a difference. Since you can't use MP4 I am guessing you are using a PC. If that is the case you could covert the files to an MPEG 2 file that is the same resolutions as your raw video files. If you are working on a Mac MOV file would work the best. See how that works.

New,

Please do not think that there is emotional attachment to these typed words. Since we are not face to face, you cannot see that. No 'gaskets' involved.

'BS', how since we are in a forum where only our written words are visible can I 'read what you mean not what you type?' And how by presenting sourced facts am IÂ 'helplessly defending the PC?' Some of your statements were inaccurate and pure assumptions. I just shed light on them.

Mac OSX+ automatically cleans volitile file fragments before they reach a certain size. Win Vista does the same thing by automatically doing the exact same thing. It's just a feature that wasn't included in earlier versions of either software.

I make no apologies or give no accolades to Microsoft. Just like any PC or Mac user, I don't get a dime from Gates or Jobs for using their products. I'm not part of the 'PC tribe', I just like a good debate. The original question of this post was 'which computer type is better at editing video?' I like others involved in this forum have used both platforms in a professional capacity and the arguments I give are based on strictly on my experience with both. The answer by the way is still, 'both have their strengths and weaknesses, so you will have to make a choice that best suits you.'

I have said it many times, I don't hate macs, just their hype. New, have you ever used PC's for your production work? I also was like you and believed the hype about Vista. We just built an NLE using Visa Business SP1 64-bit and I could kick myself for believing the hype. How do I know it works? I used it. I do agree with you about MS 'screwing up'. Since XP, they've had an annoying habit of 'artsying' stuff up to look like macs and that's just retarded. I'm not surprised though, since mac's and pc's are all but identical now. Parts and software grow more interchangable each day. With a partition, you can run Windows on a Mac and now with the Intel support built into the mac OS you can once again make your own 'Hackintosh' on a PC. So since the two platforms are so closely related, why are we still having this arguement?
