In Premiere Pro (I am using CS5.5) there is an audio transition called Continuous Power (or something very similar) - I use it all the time to do exactly what you have described. It works very well for what you are trying to achieve.

In narration editing it is often needed to shorten the talent's speech by cutting out parts. In normal cases the talent's tone gets lower at the end of the completed sentences.

Is there any audio effect or trick by which I can achieve nearly the same effect? (I use Adobe Premiere CS5.)

I have hundreds of VHS with videos of very valuable lectures. I want to capture it, enhance it, as it has degredated over last 25-30 yrs. The videos have lost colors, have disturbance in audio, I want to correct all deficiencies and preserve it for generations to come.

What is the best hardware as well as software to do this? What is the best format to preserve this?

maybe try compressing your footage so your computer can handle it. If you are going to compress the video for web in the end this might be a good idea. This would also be a free thing to try, unless you are looking for a reason to upgrade?

I know BlackMagic Design has I/O options that implement the USB3.0 connection, so I assume the connection is quite capable. However, I still haven't found whether or not USB3.0 transfers data as packets (like USB2.0) or if it's a steady, constant stream (like FW800 and eSATA).

Hi All,

I've been using FireWire800 for the past 6 years, and eSATA more recently.

USB 2.0 was simply never good for streaming video playback, due to the technical specs.

Are you using USB 3.0? Is it any good for HD video? I've found surprisingly little info on this topic.

Mark,

First, what do you mean when you say, "I set the output to H.264?" Are you changing the Compressor setting of the timeline in FCP, or are you going to Quicktime conversion and choosing H.264 compression? If you're changing your timeline Compressor, that's wrong. Keep that at ProRes422.

Second, don't even use Quicktime Conversion. Export a Master by going to File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Make sure you're exporting at Current Settings and the Make Movie Self-Contained option is check marked. Then bring your Master into Compressor to create your H.264 and MPEG files. Compressor will do a better job.

Also, you didn't explain your H.264 settings...

Mark,

I take my m2ts clips, archive them 'as-shot', then make a conversion to the PAL equivalent of your format (720 x 576) in mpg2 of good quality. I am not familiar with the procedure to be followed in Apple's 'Final Cut', because I do not use it. A great deal depends upon the quality of 'codecs', (I use 'Main Concept') and what settings you employ. For example I have reduced my GOP's to twelve, from the default fifteen. Taken overall, that sometimes gives your clips an 'edge', because of the increased density of the all-important 'I-frames'. Within mpg2, itself, I tweak everything up close to the upper-limits permitted by the DVD-Standard. That makes for somewhat larger files and longer processing-times, but pays dividends in the quality of the finished product. My philosophy is that having my footage, for editing, available as good-quality mpg2 saves a lot of hassles and permits a very direct route to disc. But, some purists might not agree with that, with (say) my bit-rate of 9200, for example, as standard. There is another school of thought which regards hoisting the rate above 7000, as a waste-of-time, just the same as there are those who say that you cannot 'improve' on 'ffmpeg' as a codec. What I do know, is that I am quite happy with the comparatively minor amount of the original m2ts image-quality which has to be sacrificed on the way to DVD. None of this addresses your problem, directly, but some of it may be helpful.

I am trying to get the same exact quality that I see in the preview window after I render it to a mpeg2 or avi. The problem is that I want the grainy film look and other effects to be the same in the rendered final video, but what I'm getting is a crisp video that cleaned up everything. I tried to choose the preview option for the full resolution quality under the file/properties tab but all that did was make it more pixelated and the quality worse but still cleaned up the video. Could someone please help with this? Using Sony Vegas Pro 10 by the way.

I take my ,mts files and throw them into Toast converting them to Apple ProRes 422, to edit into Final Cut Pro 7. I will edit my piece, then using Quicktime conversion in FCP, I set the output to usually h.264, and the size sometimes to 720x480, 16:9 since I seldom need pure HD, and export it to my external hard drive. If I compress I use MPEG Streamclip, but I don't usually compress all that much since I editing short pieces mostly.

I am having some trouble with codecs and compression when I am outputting in Final Cut Pro Studio 7.

I transfer all my .mts files to Apple ProRes 422, and proceed to edit. When I am done with the edit and ready to output, I generally select h.264 but sometimes I use Mpeg 4. When I output my video looks a little pixelated and not near as sharp as others that use h.264. I might be overlooking a setting when I export, hence the question here in the forum.

There are two common causes for frequent rendering in FCP:

1) You're trying to work with H.264 material. You should transcode that to ProRes422 before bringing it into FCP.

2) Your Sequence settings don't match your footage settings.

When your playback is stuttering, this is usually because your storage device is not transferring data fast enough to your computer. If your footage lives on an external drive, it should NOT be connected through USB2.0. Instead, go with FW800 or eSATA.

Also, if your footage lives on your system drive - the main hard drive of the computer - that will cause performance to drop as well.

I am having trouble viewing my material after I make edits. I always have to render things, and the playback often stalls after only being able to see a few seconds of what I have done. I tried everything from watching in a smaller screen, to adjusting the RT playback, but it still stutters and stops during playback.

The other question is, Why do I have to render so much. I convert my .mts files to .mov using Toast. I convert using the Apple ProRes 422 codec. If I have two tracks of video that I lay down on top of each other, when I go back to play one I have to render the one I black out. I spend entirely to much time rendering when I know people are editing much faster.

The titler in studio 14 should be able to do a lot of what you see in that video.  Pinnacle studio 14 has a tile building program that you can build awesome titles, and they will play over a video if put under a video on the timeline. What I see in that video, when things pop up, it is the actual game this person is playing, showing these things on the screen. What i see in that video is a screen capture of a person playing the game, no editing and simply posted to youtube. You can do awesome videos with Studio14, using GIMP or any good photo edit software or program. Type studio 14 into the search engine on youtube and see and learn what is possible.

Hello everyone! I've been using FCP for about 5 years now and I love it! However, I do use certain Adobe products as well like Soundbooth and Affect Effects. I find FCP is little bit more user friendly for me although, if I had the time to really sit down and learn Premier, I am sure I would like that as well!

PAL, NTSC and SECAM are different video colour systems or standards used in different countries. Exporting in PAL or NTSC only becomes a critical issue, if what you are exporting is destined for TV broadcasting.

Modern domestic electronic appliances, TV receivers, DVD players etc are multi-system, these automatically detect input system/signal type & playback normally.

HD (like SD) is able to be recorded in any system, PAL, NTSC etc.

I would be interested in designcbts comments "SONY camcorders are getting firmware update to record in PAL". Is there a link to follow that up?

PAL is the standard used by many European and British Commonwealth countries. It is what I use as a matter of course, and I have never been able to understand why its use is not universal as it has a greater number of 'lines' (as compared with NTSC, known, in some quarters, I believe as 'Never The Same Colour Twice', or at least, it was, in its early days). PAL, also uses 25 frames/sec as standard, as pointed out by 'doublehamm'. Having, on occasions transcoded a bit of stuff to send to friends in the US into NTSC, I cannot see myself changing, anytime soon.

I've only done PAL once but I selected the format during export. One of Sony's camcorders is getting a firmware update to record in PAL. With HD being a uniform standard and editing platforms taking care of the final format, why worry about what the video being recorded in?
