JG,

Have you looked into Amazon Advantage? We sell our DVDs through Amazon that way. You do need a UPC code - we buy ours through UPCExpress for $29/each. There is an annual fee, we pay $25 and they take 55% plus you pay to ship your DVDs to them when they order. We usually ship media mail to keep that cost down.

When they order more than one, that makes it better.

This may be a more economical option for you to get Amazon exposure. We've been wanting to look into the other CreateSpace option but maybe Amazon Advantage is better for us actually.

We also sell on eBay but the bulk of how we sell is through our own webstores. It still takes marketing effort and our biggest success there comes in the form of capturing email addresses and email marketing.

Tom gives you similar advice to how we operate. We've seen our business grow over 80% through our marketing efforts and Amazon and eBay were a part of that but we found more success with our own sites. For one of them, I'd say half our traffic comes from our YouTube videos.

What are your DVDs about?

Thanks for this information. I was not aware of the CreateSpace on Amazon, but it does not seem to be a "great" deal for the Video Owner, like me. I may have missed it, but nowhere do I see that the DVDs are encrypted so people cannot just whack copies of your work and sell them for nothing?

Right now we are using a local duplication company who is able to do good encryption but, of course it adds to our over all cost. Since our DVDs are not "movies" people would watch for intertainment we do not go to the trouble of expensive packaging. Just plain envelopes with full color labels. No one is going to place our educational material DVDs on their bookcase for all their friends to ohh and ahh over.

My understanding from reading Amazon.com is that you have to have a UPC to sell your self produced DVDs. No big problem. Lots of firms sell UPSs on line. We ahve been warned to get a gaurantee that they are Amazon.com approved UPS before you buy them, though. Next, if you made your DVD and are not just distributing a hollywood film, you must create a "New Product" page with the UPS and your standard Amazon white background pictures. Only "Professional" Pro Merchant Subscribers can do this. Not the Individual, Sell my stuff subscribers. This is what cost you $39.99 per month.

Ah, but wait! There is more... Amazon gets 15% "Referral Fee" of your sales and $0.80 "Variable Closing Fee" per DVD sold! So you are looking at about the exact cost for selling through Amazon.com that is costs us to sell on EBay. But we were hoping for a larger audience on Amazon.com .

Here's the 'skinny' on Create Space's video distribution. Just like their Book setup, the more you let them do for you, the more it costs to get setup.

Createspace doesn't charge you $39.99 per month, does it? jgaertner, was that just for them to sell your product or was that specificially through Createspace?

JG,

I once asked a similar question and I received the following reply which may also help you.

"The internet has
literally millions of distribution paths and platforms that
allow full retail quality distribution of your content.
For commercial retail distro you could simply sell your material on iTunes
or Createspace
(Amazon) and there are thousands more besides.
You can also host your own material on your own website. Of course this
requires a website retail cart or subscription portal, both subjects
somewhat outside the scope of this group but there is nothing to stop you
from hosting and selling on your own site and getting that site onto the
radar of millions through web promotion. Bandwidth is cheap and setting up
the site can be simple and cheap if you choose carefully.
But YouTube can still play a role in publicizing by functioning as a large
fishing net with which to get attention. YouTube does make it possible to
direct a viewer to an outside site by clicking either a link in the clip or
on the channel description page.
Thus you can place a promo video with clickable links (like iTunes) directly
on YouTube and catch viewer interest either directly in your content or by
routing them to your website or distributor portal.

I hope it helps!

Tom.

You can sell through Amazon as a traditional vendor or go through their Create Space setup. Look through their section on create space to get more details.

I was wondering wherther anyone has experience selling their video productions (DVDs) on Amazon? We have just produced a 2 DVDs set on a "educational" subject "how to do..." and we have had good success selling on Ebay at Buy it Now feature.

To sell on Amazon you have to have a UPC ($25.00 cost on line with vendor) for your product and pay Amazon a monthly fee $39.95 to list your custom made product. I would be very interested to hear other peoples' experiences regarding Amazon.com?

Cheers,

Wright,

There are buttloads of blank media outlets. You'll just have to wade through them. Some good outfits I've dealt with are: uline.com, usaplastic.com (for cases) and shop4tech.com.

I make roughly 300 DVDs per year, authoring on DVD Studio Pro, and printing with an Epson ink-jet printer. My question is if anyone can suggest a place to buy top-quality (TYG01) Taiyo Yuden discs.

I have been using TYG02 quality, the best quality that I have been able to find, from Supermediastore.com, and have had reasonably good luck avoiding quality issues like skipping or hesitation. (I have found from experience that anything less than TYG02 will give me problems (on my cheap "test" player - I have to assume some of my customers will not have the best players). However, on long programs (approaching 2 hours on a disc), I still have some occasional hesitation.

I encode using Compressor, and never exceed 7 MBps encode rate.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

More info needed...

Nobody's gotten the Panasonic Mini DV PVGS120 to be recognized by their OS or just you? Perhaps you can pass the Panasonic thru the Canon HDD/HD to the comp? Firewire between the cams? Tried another device? Tried WinDV? Tried Linux? Tried +R discs?

Until we know your specs and what you've tried besides "everything", it's just a guessing game...

I just looked up the MC-5 stats on Sony's website. It leads me to believe that it doesn't work with DVD-R discs, but only DVD+R. DVD-R is closer to the standards for DVD, so that could be some of your problem. I have a $90 DVD recorder I bought from Wal-Mart for live video recording. It seems to be universally compatible with DVD players and Blu Ray.

Honestly, if you're just trying to archive footace, MPEG2 is way more compressed than DV tape. Your best bet is to leave it on tapes for now. Alternatively, grab $75 and head to the nearest pawn shop. They'll have a dirt cheap MiniDV camcorder you can use as a tape deck for transfer.

It is my goal to capture the highest quality video I can to burn to
Archival DVDs with my current equipment.

I have a Panasonic Mini DV PVGS120 camcorder and boatloads of wonderful movies I want to save. But this camcorder will NOT connect to any of the 4 computers I own (firewire) Believe me, I have tried EVERYTHING with multiple computers, made tons of calls, dropped messages on forums, etc. The camcorder cannot be recognized as a device and videos cannot be imported. If this would work, I would be done and happy.

So, I got my hands on a Sony VRD-MC5 | DVDirect® MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder, which works like a champ with my Little Panasonic. Videos transfer over, and the way I understand it, the video it creates is MPEG2. To my eye, this part of the process preserves quality of the MiniDV tapes pretty well.

But ... here's where things go wrong.

Standard Def Videos from the MC5 will not play in new Sony BluRay DVD players. MPEG2 is not listed among the compatible formats for my new Sony Blu Ray, and the disk freezes up if you insert it. Only SONY camcorders can record in AVCHD on the MC5.

So what would you do?Â

Dub the videos to the MPEG2 disks using the MC5, edit them in Corel Video Studio and then output a DVD*?Â

Buy another MiniDV camcorder that the PC will recognize (I really don't want to spend the $$$ - I have a Canon HDD/HD camcorder already)

Something I'm not thinking of?

* My cursory test of this method shows "muddy" video output (like VHS
quality) but I cannot figure out where the quality loss is happening -
or how to avoid it.

I'm exasperated. Your expert opinion is needed

Â

ken burns is the documentarian who popularized zooming and panning around a photo to make it look like video. This is what you did with your photos. some people think this is cool. That's pretty sweet that you used pictures from your cell phone! I'm into internet freeware and found a free internet video editing software that can edit video from cell phones. It's called Avidemux and I'll be writing a chapter about it in my videomaker blog soon ("Free Stuff: Making Your Dream Movie for Nothing"). What version of pinnacle did you use? I don't like pinnacle AT ALL, but I've only used 11 Plus, I've heard the Ultimate versions are nice.

Pinnacle is all I know thus far anyway lol... it is Studio MediaSuite version 10.5 Titanium Edition $99.00 online, ugh! Let me know when you write your chapter for your blog, will keep reading after that.

When I used my cell phone I just took still pics not video. I have never used my video part of my cell phone, tried it once didn't like it. I made the video from just stills.

I am really jazzed that what I did in my video was similar to what someone famous does. It is just what I was seeing & feeling when making video. I will go back and try to see what you are telling me.

Thanks Chris, Barbara

Nice! I liked the "Heaven Created by GOD" at the end of your second one. The second one's transitions/music made me think of something that would be playing in a Hallmark store at Christmas time. (Yes, my Mom used to take us to Hallmark.) what kind of camera did you use? I've always wanted to take pictures like that. You have the well known "Ken Burns" effect down cold. good job! stuff I didn't like (you can skip this part until later): Like Art said above, the red credits at the end of the first one were hard to read on top of the black and white photo. It was probably the font the text was in(thicker fonts are easier to read), but extra drop shadow or a different color would help too. Many of the pictures needed to be "perked up" with either Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. Just some color correction and sharpening. The first one seemed very slow, but that might be because it was the first one I watched.

THANKS ART & CHRIS FOR YOUR COMMENTS!!

Chris, you and Art are both correct about the red script font at end of Reno video, not to justify leaving it in there, but it was 6am and I was tried lol... and I said to myself "Oh well, no one is going to read the credits anyway! That was just tired talking. Silly, won't say that again! Thanks."

Believe it or not, all those pics taken in the Reno video with the exception of the blk & wh ones were taken with my cell phone!! We were down from Tahoe in Reno buying a car, and I had no video cam or camera of any kind with me to take pics of these great views from 25 floors up in Harrah's of Reno, so, I took out my trusty Nokia cell phone lol!! You are absolutely right, I should have taken them into photoshop to perk them up! I love hearing about all these things through someone else's eyes.

The Tahoe video (hang on to your seat) were all taken with a very antique digital camera, probably one of the first made. It is a floppy disk camera!! "Sony Digital Mavica 2X" it takes incredible pictures. Yes, looking back each frame was to slow, it was one of my first videos trying to learn Pinnacle. I like that you thought of Hallmark though, and besides the snowy street shot from the 18th floor of Harrah's I liked the Heaven Created by GOD frame the most too.

Not wanting to sound totally green, tell me about Ken Burns, and his effects. Please.

Thanks again guys for your replies!! Barbara

PLEASE CRITIQUE MY TWO VIDEOS. I just found this forum last night, and am new to video making. I truly love it, and want to learn all I can. The tips & tricks page seems to be a really great place to start. I have been learning Pinnacle on my own since January of this year when I have a chance.

I would like to make travel aid DVDS for Tahoe and Reno, etc... for sale on eBay, so, when I do I want them to be high quality with great effects. I would like to speed up my learning process now. I could use anyone's advice, and would appreciate it.

I have a Michael Jordon & Tony Romo video that I need to - hold my breath -Â edit together, and get up for sale. I find the still photo videos so much easier, and just plain fun. Video videos much harder.

Thank you to anyone & everyone who replies back!!
