DVD spec requires 2 streams of data - MPEG2 for video and .AC3 for audio.

What you want to do is export a full res Master out of your editing program. Take that full res Master into dedicated encoding software, such as Adobe Media Encoder or Apple Compressor. Use that encoding software to create your MPEG2 and .AC3 files.

In order to create good looking DVDs, you have to understand compression, specifically Long GOP compression. There's a lot to it, but plenty written on the web. After doing some research, if you have any more specific questions, feel free to come on back

Nowcomer to video editing - How can I produce and burn the best possible quality DVDs (not AVHCDs or BDs). I can produce and burn excellent quality short videos to DVD when burning in AVCHD format, and that plays well on my desktop computer and on the flat screen TV, but it won't play on my lower powered laptop computer, which is probably similar to what friends and family have. Videos which I burn using the DVD format will play on the laptop, but they're horrible - extremely noisy, even somewhat pixelated. Adding video denoise suppresses some noise, but destroys most details. I'm using Cybelink Power Director 10 as the editing program - very happy with it.

@iankinnz & Vid-e-o-man Thanks for the info. I have made many standard dvds that play with no problem on older & newer dvd players, but none of them will play on my Blu-ray player...I just recently got a dvd of my daughters Christmas Play on standard dvd which plays fine in my Blu-ray player. I dont know if i am missing a setting or what; so back to the editing station i go.

CMack, as iankinnz said most blu-ray players can upconvert standard definition DVDs to play on HD tv's giving very good results. I have in the past used my Sony Movie Studio software(later models only) to burn HD files to standard DVDs that will only play in Blu-ray players or PS3 consoles giving true HD images on TV screen. My computer only had a standard DVD burner installed. I didn't have the option to add menu, etc. I have since added a Blu-ray burner and burn to Blu-ray discs now which have much larger capacity and I have the ability to add menu.

If not using a blu-ray player, I would use the computer method to get 1080p. Is there a TV out there that can run a video file from a USB flash drive without a PC or blu-ray player attached? That would be the ticket.

I believe all Blueray players are reverse compatable allowing them to play DVDs. If you can make a DVD that will play on a DVD player is will also play in standard DVD quality on a Blueray player.

After checking, YouTube offers free music with apparently no strings attached.

I think Vimeo does too but not sure. I guess I will upload my videos to YouTube

and use their enhancement feature to select and add their music.

Bill, not sure about Vimeo's policy (and they might be similar to YouTube), but usually if YouTube is made aware of a copyright violation, they remove the video from public view and allow the owner to change out the music. They have a library of free-to-use music that one can drop in. This is made up of songs that certain artists have allowed to be used. The "fair use" concept also comes into play when dealing with certain types of video projects that are made for different reasons (parody, educational, etc.). It also may be that the artist or record label doesn't really mind that their intellectual property is being used, and appreciates the publicity.

When I was deployed to Kosovo, we produced several video montages (aka "Hooah videos") featuring footage and photos of Soldiers doing their jobs. One video included "He's a Pirate" from Pirates of the Caribbean, and the other was Toby Keith's "American Soldier." They weren't done for profit, or used to sell anything. But guess which one got pulled...? Hint: Disney guards their intellectual property like Fort Knox.

Everyone has an End User License Agreement (EULA) which spells out (usually) clearly just how you may use any product (royalty free or not, music, graphics, footage, etc...).

Most rf music EULA's allow you to use the music in a compilation (video or sometimes audio) and distribute that compilation to a limited audience (e.g. if you were doing a TV show with an expected audience of > one million sets, you may need additional licensing). In no case have I ever seen the right to distribute the music alone.

Also be aware not all music used in video is rf - there are other forms of "rights managed" music (such as needle drop).

Also, depending on where you show your work, you may need to provide a cue sheet - which for some venues tells them (not you!) who owns the rights to the music and in some cases (like TV or movies) whom they (not you!) have to pay.

Confused?? Join the club!

When you purchase royalty-free music, you are paying to use that material (usually with some stipulations, like, you may use it e.g. broadcast, internet, etc., but can't resell the collection). Just because someone buys a finished project from you doesn't automatically entitle them to use of the assets- if that were the case, you would 'lose' control of your own video everytime you sell a DVD or someone views your work online.

It's easiest to think of it not as 'owning' the music, but having a license to use it. Unless it's under Creative Commons, songs require acquiring the license from each and every user to keep it above board. HTH.

It still is not clear about royalty free music. If I pay and download some royalty free music, can I attach the music and post on YouTube? What if I attach the music to a video and burn it to a DVD for someone. Do they then "own" the music and can they upload to YouTube? I just don't want anyone to suffer a lawsuit.

Hi there,

I'm trying to find out how to do this without loosing quality. I've got to make a product show for my friend when he goes to his presentation. The video will run from a DVD to a Monitor via a HDMI to DVI cable.

Yet it seems this method causes to much quality to be lost. I'm not sure what video setup I should use.

For instance PAL DV 720x576 (16:9) which has the 1.4 pixel aspect ratio OR

use the square pixels PAL DV which is 1050x576.

Can anyone clarify which would be the best or an alternative, I was thinking maybe just creating it in 1080P then running it from a computer?

Thanks.

The 20 minute limit sounds like you may be using a computer with the hard drive formatted in FAT32, which has a file size limit of 4GB. This equates to 18 minutes of DV video.

I have a question regarding Adobe Premiere Elements 8, not the Pro version.

I've looked everywhere I can think to answer this and have come up blank.

Say I have three or more saved projects (like baseballgame1, baseballgame2 and

baseballgame3). Is there a way I can join them in one time line so I can add start and end point and save them to DVD as a longer movie with tabs on the opening screen for the DVD? You could click the game1 tab to watch baseballgame1, click game2 tab to watch baseballgame2, etc. The underlying question is how to you combine projects to a larger project?

Thank you

I use Kunaki several times and the quality is great. The only problem is that you need a PC program to upload your DVD. Also if you have a slow upload Internet speed the DVD will take a long time to upload (all my DVD took around 2 days). Since I'm a Mac user, I resurrected an old Pentium 4 processor Windows machine I had at my parents house and use it mainly for Kunaki. Prices varies from $1 to $1.75 per copy and shipping is acceptable.

As you know, Charles, I'm working on the research, practical application and writing a book that hopefully will address the many issues, conflicts and options for printing and/or duplicator/printer combo units ... which are MUCH more expensive. I STILL get by using an Epson (model out of production but several name brands all print dvd blanks with inkjet white surfaces and also have available constant ink supply systems that help save BIG BUCKS on ink). I will eventually need to pin down and acquire another brand/model printer that accepts/has CISS available. The duplicator/printer robot systems are WAY too rich for my blood yet. However, if I ever do get back into the level of bulk production I once had that is where I'll look for the solution, not outside printer resources for a host of reasons, personal and otherwise.

Seems it was Kunaki that Mecca & Long uses, but at one time Long told me it was PC only. He went on to suggest a company called TrepStar that served similarly for Mac-based product. I never went to check them out but hope it gets you going in a good direction Charles. I hear you about not wanting to invest in a duplicator right now, but I have to say that even a 1-to-3 unit could save a LOT of time doing in-house duplication and possibly generate some xtra cash flow. The 1-3, up to 1-5 units in various brand are "dirt cheap" compared to what I paid for either of mine. Just saying ...

Charles, do you know Bill Mecca (facebook) or Jay Michael Long (here and facebook) who also know each other and are friends with me? If so, they both use a company I cannot remember the name of that seems to fit certain needs for economic DVD duplication. If you have no contact with them, let me know and I will try to find out the name of the resource they use.

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive, good, reliable DVD duplicating company? I have a client that will be needing to duplicate a DVD I created for him and I am searching around as I do not want to purchase a duplicator at this time.

Hi,

May be nobody on this forum has a machine cost this price, look on the web industrial DVD using silk screening and duplication. You need a floor space about 20 x 20 and you need contract. I suggest to you find a producer near your location they charge less than 0.70 to duplicate and print on DVD also they can package in DVD case add trap sheet a good DVD case cost between 0.14 to 0.22 and trapsheet 0,25 to 0,79

Personnaly try to find somebody with all equipment to produce for you is much less problem than start from 0.

Regards,

Hello, I am new to the duplication field, and was hoping you could give me some suggestions on extremely fast DVD/Blu Ray duplicators. I dont need any printing, just burning. I need a machine that can preferably duplicate a ~4GB DVD every 30 seconds or less and the same for a Blu Ray as well. I know these are extremely high standards, but I am willing to look into a machine that can do this that is priced up to $50,000.

Thanks, and any help would be very appreciated.

'Lovebaseball', the DVD-standard calls for mpg2 as the format, so converting to anything else, simply means that the material will, ultimately, be converted back to mpg2 in any case. If you wish to preserve as much quality as possible, set the 'quality', if it is adjustable, fairly high. That way, you will achieve the best possible results at the expense of slightly bigger files. I usually use variable bit-rate and 'double-pass'. That way you can push the upper setting to 9200 and let the bottom setting 'float', giving an average which still squeaks into the DVD-standard. However, if time (processing, that is), is 'of-the-essence' do not attempt double-pass, just bash the stuff through the process and settle for what comes-out.
