I am looking to buy a new prosumer level camera to shoot local tourism videos and weddings and conferences. So kind of a wide-range. I also want to buy something that will be relevant and practical for several years.

I've been asking some friends for advice and one says I should stick with Sony. One says I should stick with Panasonic. One says I should get HDV. Another few says STAY AWAY FROM HDV FOREVER ITS THE DEVIL (His words, not mine).

I don't really understand the difference between HDV and DVCPro HD or what is so wrong with HDV.

I don't know if I would be okay with a $2000 camera like the Sony HDR-FX7 or if I should go all out and look for a used HVX200 kit.

I also don't know if I should look only at flash drive cameras or tape cameras.

The HVX200 looks so practical because it records to P2 cards *or* tape *or* a firestore drive. Some of the kits I've been looking at include some P2 cards and even firestore drives.

But would it be more economical/practical to just go with a traditional tape camera?

I DON'T KNOW and feel so overwhelmed. I would appreciate honest feedback if anyone can help me. Thank you!

Need advice on AVC-HD. With the issues of AVC-HD and how it requires a monster computer to edit what is the advantages or disadvantages of using MainConcept's AVC-HD to DVCPRO transcoder to convert the codec for easier editing? Panasconic offers this trancoder from it's professional video website. I've used it in the past due to Premiere CS3 not accepting AVC-HD files. I now have upgraded to CS4 so this is not an issue. Just wondering if there's an advantage or disadvantage to converting the codec to DVCPRO. AVC-HD does push my computer pretty hard.

Thanks,

What I am struggling with is my timecode. I will record timecode to tape and say that I record 00:01:50 worth. Then when I rewind my tape to 00:01:00 instead of the timecode picking up from where I rewound to it (00:01:00 ) will continue recording up from where I originally stoped (00:01:50).

How do I get the deck to lay down timecode from the previous frame and not where I stopped it?

THanks,

 Hi,

I just saw references to this model on ebay. A search on Panasonic's web site leads to a Japanese only brochure, but a Google search found a blog entry about this model being shown at NAB in April this year.  Does anybody know anything about this model? It looks like a newer/better replacement for the 200A model, but I can find no write-ups or reviews of it. The price seems to be lower that for the 200A, by about a grand or more, which makes it a very interesting alternative.

Hi all,

I volunteer for a non-profit organization. We had a production company create a video for us. They sent us all the raw footage on tapes (DVCPRO AJ-P126L) and a DVD with the Final Master Video on it in .VOB format.

Long story short, our rights to a song on the video will expire soon. Since I can not cut out the music on the VOB file, I need to get the tape footage onto the computer and rebuild the Video. I have a high end computer that I built myself. I'm a computer nerd thats why they asked me to help with this project. lol - I've never done any *real* video editing before, just playing around with home videos from a DVD Cam.

My question: What do I need to purchase to read/encode/decode these tapes onto my computer. I've looked into purchasing a deck but I'm not sure exactly what I need. Since this will be something we plan on continuing (creating our own videos) I don't mind purchasing the equipment. I just need some direction. Thanks for your help.
