I use a canon HV20 with my xha1. See if you can find good used Canon HV20, 30 or 40.

I use a Canon XH-A1 to videotape barrel races and need to make it where contestants can view their race from earlier in the day. My problem is that I only have one camera and I'm still using it to film other races that continue throughout the day. I typically have my laptop so I can hook up a different camera to it that uses mini DV tapes but don't want to spend much money. Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent camcorder that uses mini DV tapes I can purchase for this purpose? I saw some tape decks but they were out of my market.

DO NOT EVER use a mini-dv rewinder.

They do not have the tape's tension monitor and do not sense the end of the reel like a camera does. The rewinder stops when it slams the tape to a halt at the end. You could easily see the leader come off the hub and then you would have a useless tape in need of repair, or worse a broken tape.

I should WISH that I have enough business that wearing out a camera would be a problem.

As long as you don't rewind during playback (aka watching the image rewind) you don't have to worry about wearing out your camera.

Any suggestions about reliable mini DV rewinder, to save wear on camera? The one manufactured by Sakar does not get strong reviews - some claim it has eaten tapes.

 Two other options are:

Streamclip 1.1 from squared5.com (you'll need to buy the $20 mpg encoder for Quicktime)

or

AVS media converter - $40

I know there should be editing software that will extract from a DVD, but I don't know what it is. I have handled this 2 different ways.Â

1. I have some software called DVDfab that will copy, extract, convert any DVD to an Mpeg file, IPOD format, PSP, etc. That is one way to extract. http://www.dvdfab.com

2. Another, rather low tech and easy way is to play the disk in a DVD player and run RCA cables out to your camcorder, record on the camcorder while the DVD is playing, and then capture from your camcorder back into your PC. I know there should be some loss with this, but I can't really detect it.Â

I hope someone has a better answer for you, because I'm curious as well.

Good Luck,

I would hook your camera or deck to the DVD player. Press play on the DVD player and record to miniDV tape. Then capture the miniDV tape.Â

You can also download handbrake. it allows you to rip the DVDs. It takes long though. Â

Is there any way to get the footage off of a dvd and into my NLE (I use Premiere Pro CS3)? It is not copyright protected it's a friends, but I want to get that footage off of the dvd into my NLE and then onto a mini dv tape.

Or which programs do this?

I was looking at a Cannon ZR900 the other day, and the sales person told me that the pro's still like to use DV tape. What do you guys think? Witch is a better format to use, DV tape, Mini DVD, or a Hard drive? Witch will have the better quility image? Any thoughts on this matter will help me make up my mind about buying a new video camera
