Greetings,

I am just starting out in film and am having trouble getting the information I want answered by any of the suits at the big electronic stores. Unfourtunate for me, I have no friends with experience in these matters either. I am looking for some (i call them simple) answers, and I am hoping that someone here might help me.

The project: I am doing a documentary of a precarious group of people and require equipment and know how.

1st question: What Camcorder should I look into. I have a budget of about 700 dollars, and am looking at a mic, and a software compliment for this camcorder. I am hearing alot of good things about the Canon Vixia, but I have no idea if the information is accurate.

2nd question: I have heard that Vegas Software would be above my grade for a documentary, but better to have it and not need it I always say. I want to eventually burn it to a dvd to watch, would Vegas work well for this and say normal burn software?

3rd question: With a documentary I am going to be interviewing people in some pretty noisy places, and would require the tools to turn down the volume levels of the area to better hear the subject's response. Which program would I use, or would it depend on the mic or camcorder?

Any help would be appreciated...

I am starting a documentary in the next month and am looking into purchasing this or a Canon Vixia Model. I am on a budget, but I can afford about $600 on the camcorder. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this camera for the type of work, interviews and such, as I will require a mic for it.

I'll probably be running Sony Vegas for the Editing software.

I'm a comic that's shooting a documentary of me doing comedy 8 hours a day 5 days a week over the next 5 years. I've settled on the mac mini as the computer for the project. I've settled on the i-movie as a sufficient post production software. But as far as filming goes i kinda hit a wall.....I was thinking of going the flip cam route (as it being cheap and having good picture but I've read alot of reviews and have gathered that it would not be able to handle the weekly duty) I would greatly appreciate anybody's response on what you think would be the best camcorder for the project under 500 dollars. thanks

I just finished post production on a mini documentary about a Seattle luthier. We started shooting this on an XH-A1, but I happened to pickup a T2i part way through the shoot and that ended up being the main camera because it was so fun to use. That said, the AH-A1 is still a strong, flexible camera, despite being a little long in the tooth. Of course, shooting with two very different cameras requires a some dedicated work in post to make them as indistinguishable as possible.

So here is the result: http://www.americanluthier.us

I've just been watching some professional documentaries, and wondering how they are doing sound for interviews, particularly when there are conversations going on. Once in a while I thought I saw a lavalier mike clipped to someone's shirt, but more often not. Shotgun? Maybe. But what happens when you have, say, people sitting around a table, or a family in their living room talking to each other? Six shotgun mikes? And does a shotgun really give you the quality I've been hearing? Case in point: "45365."

Hello fellow Videomakers,

I'm making a documentary that is intended for festivals and some type of distribution (even self-distribution). Do I need to form a production company, such as an LLC, to protect my assets? Or, is this only necessary if I anticipate making money from my film? What is the standard legal practice?

Thanks :-)

Hi Everyone,

I recently completed a 'grass-roots' documentary - it has seven internationally known people who discuss topics from organic food, economics, sacred geometry, and physics, and so much more. It is way too long to have in independent theaters so I have decided to market the documentary through a landing page that will be up next week so that folks can purchase it. It is 4.5 hours long and bonus is 45min. - 2 disk set.

Question One: How do I go about marketing worldwide? Europe?

Question Two: How best to market in USA? Are there grass-roots companies that can help me out?

Question Three: How best to copyright the name of my documentary so that I can protect the name for future expo's that I will produce based on the documentary?

Question Four: What marketing companies are the BEST in regard to marketing grass-roots documentaries?

Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated with any of the four questions.

Thank you!

The other night I was trawling through the titles on Hulu and came across the documentary "Mac Heads." Being comprised of 'Anti-Mac'er' I wasn't going to watch it. However, being the type to give an ear to things I'm not fond of for the sake of being able to say I gave a fair listen I fired it up. Right off the bat I will admit that I barely got through half of the program and I'll mention why later.

What I was able to get through was enlightening as I had never fully understood the absolute fanaticism of Mac Heads and Mac-Fanboys. Now before you fans of Apple products leap to conclusions, know that I have worked with Mac's and PC's since '94 and have built or repaired both platforms.

Listening to the near religious accounts of those interviewed pointed out one very important thing to me... 'Marketing is Everything.' Granted their was a time when Apple's were the only computers available for 'creative types', but it wasn't that long. I started working with Mac's at a large Production House back in '96. It was a heck of a leap from my old '94 Packard-Bell 386 laptop to a Power Mac and OS 7. whatever. I liked them and far as I knew they were the only game in town. In '97 I wanted to get a desktop, but couldn't afford anything Apple had to offer at the time. However, that was right around the time Photoshop was made cross-platform. A light went off in my head as I had seen 'medium-end' workstation desktops were in my price range.

Back then it was sacrilege to even consider using a Windows based computer for anything considered 'creative'. You used a Mac. Period. Me being the 'insurgent' type anyway wanted to give it a try. So I picked up an Intel MMX Win95 workstation computer for half of what the cheapest Mac would have run me. I installed Photoshop on it lo and behold not only did it work, I could work on projects at home and transfer them to work with the help of 'Mac Drive 97'. I was sold. So at the job, I worked with the high-end expensive Mac's and at home the infinitely cheaper but capable PC.

By the time I got into video editing, I had experience in making field repairs on our Mac's (there are no Apple Stores in the Australian Outback or the Jungles of Thailand) and found that working on computers was no 'arcane' discipline only for computer geeks. After spending a crapload of money to get my PC upgraded, I figured I could do it for much cheaper (I was correct.) As time went on, I eventually built my first rig and have been doing it ever since.

Professionally, I continued to work with Mac's as necessary but never went out of my way to purchase one. When I got laptops, again they were always PC's. It wasn't until '98 that I was introduced to Apple Fanboyism when one of my co-workers was bragging about his new G3 laptop and that he could partition the drive and also put windows on it (something I still think is retarded no matter what anyone says the advantages are.)

Fast forward a few years and I'm looking to hire some new shooters for some upcoming gigs and one prospective young lady is going on about how she uses FCP and her new Mac Book Pro, blah, blah, blah. When she was done I told her that was fine and wasn't a problem because we worked cross-platform and long as she could output to whatever the client's desired format was, I didn't care what she used. She looked at me with a blank stare and said, "What, you don't use Mac's?" Knowing where this was going, I replied "Only when required." She shot back with, "But I thought all art was made on Mac's...." Believe it or not she did not call back for a follow-up interview. Too bad for her because everyone who worked on that gig got paid really well.

I've also lost potential gigs because the client wanted someone to who worked with Mac's. One almost client said, "I wasn't serious because I didn't use Mac's." Forget that I'm was a qualified Symphony Editor and so on. So watching that film and hearing people saying the equivalent of 'computer racist' remarks had me shaking my head.

Now, what finally made me stop watching at the halfway mark was the Messianic worship of Steve 'Don't Hold it That Way' Jobs. That and how these folks were literally 'glowing' when talking about how they felt loved and about how the Apple Community was a 'family'. As I said, Marketing is Everything and I will give the folks at Apple 100 thumbs up for the way they've marketed a product that works (until you absolutely don't need it to fail) to the point of having people waiting for endless hours outside their stores to buy something that makes them feel 'loved'. That's hard 'effin' core.

There is no love lost or found between me and Bill Gates. I admire him and 'Steve' for what they've done to change the world. However like him or not, 'Bill' has yet to take away my 'freedom of choice.' Microsoft just makes the OS's and I can choose from an array of other companies some great others dismal or I can build the damn thing myself. Used to be the same with Apples. Not anymore (Hackintoshes are considered 'illegal' so they don't count.) Granted, Apple has a good support system and so on but you either go to an Apple Store or one of the few 'Authorized Retailers'. If you can run with that cool.

Me, I'd like to think that I'm hanging onto the same spirit that Steve-o, Woz and Bill had back in the day when they were making this stuff in their garages vice the monolithic corporate shellgame their playing now. Don't think Apple is playing a shellgame? In 2007 they changed to Apple, Inc. from Apple Computers in Steve's own words, "To reflect our new product offerings" If you've checked lately, outside of Snow Leopard, there hasn't been too much push in the computer division, but mobile devices are where they are going. It would seem the Mac Head's 'messiah' is deserting his loyal flock. But hey, at least you'll have the 'rest of your family' when 'Dad' leaves you behind....

So with all that in mind, I'll take some Pepto and crank up the second half of that video. Maybe, I'll get through it without wanting to hurl again.

This vid goes out to all my fellow pro's and to you Intermediates, Ammy's and straight out of the box newbies. Here's an excerpt from the documentary on Screenwriter Harlan Ellison and his rather pointed perspective on writer's being paid for their services. This razor sharp wisdom applies to still, video, film shooters, sound designers, graphics people and so on. His language gets salty at points so be advised.

The days of 100% 'in your face' ads are coming to a close. Not that that stuff worked well anyway. What's happening now is a new version of the 'Soft Sell' style of advertisement. Now films and videos on what would seem to be a completely unrelated subject are now vehicles to 'alert you to a product' on a near unconscious level. In the very well done documentary 'Up There' by Malcom Murray you can see the power of the Soft Sell at it's best. Check it out....

Hello,

I've never done any video before and I want to document a trip I'm going on and also make it like a documentary where I interview people at the event I'm attending. My hope is that I can get the video played the following year at their amateur film festival. My questions are do I have to shoot in HD to be current? Do I need a prosumer camera to acheive my goal or can I use something like a consumer camcorder? This may be a one time project so I'm not terribly worried about getting a camera that will bring me to professional level in the future. Having said that obviously I won't be investing a lot of money in computer/editing hardware. I think my main concerns with this project will be low light situations, sound quality, and my own level of inexperience. Any suggestions for camera/other equipment that would suit this type of project with a complete newbie?

Thanks,

Hello,

Would you know of any company or person that may be interested in comping a couple of compact HD video cameras for my Malaria expeditions?

In return I will advertise and promote them through the book/documentary/lecture series and website. Panasonic has already given us a Toughbook laptop for field editing.

I am married to an native Amazonian, have a private preserve
there. In March I will be starting my expeditions to remote villages in the Peruvian Amazon to deliver
Malaria nets to jungle children. 3,000 children die every day from Malaria.

I will shoot a documentary and write a book about every aspect of the expeditions as well as give real time updates to US schools and the public via internet.

The book/DVD series is entitled Netting Adventures. I have an Emmy Nominated producer on board for the documentary.

If you visit my website <www.AmazonDetours.com> you can review more info.

Thank you for your input.

Sincerely,

I'm doing a little investigating for a friend who wants to make a 30 minute documentary. It will consist of some interviews as well as some still shots, and video with voice over. She does not need it at the most professional quality either. What can she expect to pay to have this done? Also, any suggestions as to who to contact? Thanks

Hello,

I'm Gilbert.

I have been working on a feature docu-comedy (with some serious parts) that is scheduled to have its premiere at a university theatre in the area later this month. It is about 88 minutes long. It is my first feature film. Most of the interactions are with people who may not be considered real actors, but there are a couple of cameos with TV personalities.

Here is a trailer/prevue:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oYd6IO-qmM

For all of you who aspire to create documentary films, here is an article by Basil Tsiokos a veteran film festival programmer on what not to do when producing documentary films. Apparently some feel his criticisms are too harsh, but as a filmmaker who cut his teeth in the biz making documentary films I found his points were well made. Also, Mr. Tsiokos being an 'insider' for the selection of film festival (Sundance) and public television (POV) programming I think he's definitely worth checking out. I also think that 'old hands' at doc making would do well to turn an eye to the article for it reaffirmed the lessons I've learned over the years.

Let me know what you think.

Hello fellow videomakers,

I've been a fan of this community for a couple of years now, but just now I'm beginning to actively participate in the daily interaction with all of you great minds. And I need your help! I've been doing some research on purchasing a digital camcorder but I feel like the more options I have the more lost I feel!

There is one thing I know for sure, though, the sound recording quality must be as best as possible and that has been one of the components I've paid close attention to when I've been looking for a camera. And on that note, there is an event that I'm planning on following and recording that takes place at night, outdoors with limited lighting! So here comes my problem ... what kind of camera is suitable for my "modest" desires!

I'm looking at a price range up to $500...but if I score from the lottery these days I won't mind an upgrade.

Thank you in advance for your kind suggestions

Happy filmmaking!

Hi (standard way to start a fourm)Im thinking, scratch that I am going to make a documentery film and need some way to get off the ground. As usual i want to stay on a super low budget (around $75) Its about weapens that super evil smarties build in school. you won't believe the things that these kids creat if you find the right materal. Basicly it is going to have a "host" yapping, then there is going to be a senero (i know thats not how you spell it) About a kid "pretending to construct it" (Not HOW to construct them.) Then Pretending (by the way, the audience isn't supposed to know that the actors will be pretending)to use it on someone. I have done a lot of planing and i am about ready to pitch this to my crew. I am working w/ a small crew and i just need some pointers.

I have neaver made a large documentery before so im going to need some help

P.s. If you think this idea is a bad idea, speak up!!

Thank you
