Digital filmmaking and post has ended 35mm films dominance in the movie business. This new research looks at the future trends in post production and the filmmakers, like Spielberg, who are still loyal to film:

I wasn't sure where to post this, and after some searching didn't see anything on it, so I figured I'd post here.

I love the magazine, but became very frustrated after purchasing a year subscription via the iPad Newsstand. Every time I came across an advertisement in the magazine, the app would freeze and a large circular arrow would appear on screen (like a reload button). The only thing I could do at this point would be to open up the table of contents and try to navigate around it, but sometimes even that didn't work. Closing the app and re-opening it didn't do anything; it would come up on the same image. The only way I could reset the app seems to be to uninstall it and reinstall, and then the same issue would come up the next time an advertisement came up. This is very frustrating, as you can imagine.

Has anybody else had this issue? Is there anybody from the magazine that could offer some advice as to how to fix it? I am using an iPad 2 with the latest version of iOS (5.0.1).

Whether you're using a Canon, Nikon, Pentax or other type of HDSLR camera, the big issue is keeping that bad-boy in focus. Yes, you can spend a couple of metric tons worth of cash on focusing gear but whether you do or don't keeping good focus without auto settings must be dealt with. Here's a vid from Stillmotion giving some good basic tips for keeping focus with the Canon line of cameras and a few items for monitoring your image during shooting. These lessons apply to whatever camera line you're using so take notes... there'll be a quiz!

my canon GL1 has been sitting lonely on a shelf for a few years now. i never liked having to do video capture in order to get the video into my pc which is probably one of the reasons i gave up on video as a hobby - that is until digital camcorders that could record to sdhc came on the scene. since then, i've been rekindling my hobby since it is so each to get video into the pc now. but, i still wish i could find some use for my GL1 without breaking the bank. does anyone know if any of these things are possible and how to do it

1 - connect the GL1 directly to a pc to record directly to disk rather than to a miniDV tape. i would be willing to use the camera in a fixed studio setting if this is possible

2 - is there a cheap miniDV player that can convert a tape to sdhc or a harddrive

3 - i know there is a cool device that can connect to the DV port and record directly to a built in hard drive, but this is rather expensive - way more than what i would be willing to spend. http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=QSDV-HDV-6&Category_Code=DV&Product_Count=0

any suggestions would be appreciated.

I"ve recently graduated with a film degree from the University of North Texas. Unlike many of my fellow students, I wasn't blessed with the financial ability to buy a camera (or have one purchased for me) upon graduation. SO, I find myself as a director without anything to direct with! I'm looking for a camera (DSLR or otherwise) that would be affordable on a shoestring budget like mine. I can swing from $1000.00 to $1500.00, approximately. A starting kit (body, zoom lens, etc) is all I really need for now. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I recently read an article from Peter Jackson how he's filming the Hobbit in 48p and how he's done with and prefers the faster frame rate in all aspects. And I have to say I agree with him.

The 24 frame rate was established a very long time ago when sound was introduced to film. And mostly because projectors and film cameras of the day had an intermittant which would only react so fast. 24 frames worked back then, but why oh why are we still using it now. Everone wants digital cameras with 'native' 24p, which doesn't actually mean anything, but yet everyone wants it. There's nothing wrong with your digital footage NOT looking like the blurry film you're used to seeing. I agree that 35mm captures more color variances than most digital chips can, but the eye percieves motion oh so much faster and clearere than 24 frames a second. And isn't the ultimate goal to have footage that is exactly how our eyes see the world?

SO that's my question, discuss, debate, argue, and I'm curious what other opinions are on this. ;)

Hi everyone,

I have been looking
for a position as an intern or editor’s assistant in Los Angeles for about 3
years now, since I graduated from college with a degree in Media Arts, and I’m
starting to run out of ideas and become frustrated as to why nobody will hire
me. As far as experience goes, I have worked
at two tv stations and on the behind the scenes featurette of a large scale
film. I know Final Cut, Premiere, After
Effects and Photoshop, and spent about 2k this year taking an AVID course and
getting an AVID technical certification. I have a subscription to
Media-match.com and get job alerts sent to my email. I’ve been applying to
about 15 online jobs a week but I never get any responses. Lately I have been
calling post-houses off LA411.com and cold calling for basic internships in order to
learn a little more and just get my foot in so I can start on the ground floor
of a company and grow with the position. I have offered to work for free for a trial
period at all the places I’ve called…After about 2 months, I’ve had one
interview but no call back, and most of the people I talk to seem to just be either
incredibly flaky, or just giving me the run around. I also have a demo reel.... http://www.vimeo.com/17581129, but
after all the positions I’ve applied to it only has 8 views?

Is there something I am doing wrong or missing?

How am I supposed to break into this industry if I don’t
know anybody and nobody will take a chance on me?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Here on the forum there is a constant stream of posters asking, "What should I do to save my videos?" Now, that's a broad question. But whether you're shooting tape or one of the varieties of 'tapeless' card-based flavors, the issue these days is archiving both for long-term but primarily in the field.

The following article "Blazing a Path in the Digital Wilderness" by Carl Mrozek covers a wide range of areas including; outdoor/wildlife, workflow in the field, storage/power issues and a lot more! Though his work is primarily with P2 based tech (this ought to make Robgrauert very happy), he does talk about XDCAM and other tapeless digital professional formats.

So how can this work for you? Granted you may not be like the featured Cinematographer Dereck Joubert and drop $750k worth of equipment in a crocodile filled river and have to go fish it out, but how he dealt with that and continued on is a great example of what today's gear is capable of.

For over 100 years film has been the dominant technology for making movies and news shows. It evolved from simple b&w celluloid based stock and hand-cranked cameras to digitally enhanced 70mm Imax 3D. Now with digital cinematography rivaling (and soon to surpass) film it is just a matter of time before film is cast into the pigeonhole of 'art materials' like painting, sculpture and so on.

Discussing film's likely future are the panelists representing the high-end of Motion Picture, Independent and Corporate filmmakers in the Zacuto web series "Film Fellas." In addition to the looming end of film, they also discuss their preferences and dislikes with the rapidly changing digital technologies and how they're adapting to them. Their discussion mirrors much of what I see you all ask about in the forums. As always, if you're asking these questions, so are the pros! Let me know what you think.

I am trying to upload my old analog 8mm tapes to my PC using the RCA connections on my TV-in/tuner card. It all seems to be going well, but I find that I am getting some distortion or interference on the uploaded file. As I watch it upload, on the camera the image is fine, but on the computer there is some interference, the best way to describe it is like when the old tv stations on an antenna would go in and out angled lines on the image. What would cause this? Is there any way to get rid of it?

On another note, is there any way to clean up the images, or make them clearer? I can only upload as a WMV (I am using Windows Movie Maker to capture), I would prefer AVI. If I convert to AVI afterwards, will the picture improve? I want to create DVD's for playback on a television screen & am afraid that the image will be all grainy.

Thanks for the help

I've shot weddings as a photographer both in an official capacity and as a freelancer. I personally try to avoid doing weddings as a videographer because the majority of potential clients don't understand that my services come with a level of quality of look and content they must be prepared to pay for.

Now that the wedding video industry has started to mature, the artistic and professional quality has grown exponentially from 'Uncle Joe' and his hand held camera to Digital Cinematography.

So with that in mind, if you are looking to get into wedding video work or already making a living at it you should ask yourself; what's the next level and how far is my current work from it? Whether you are already asking yourself these questions or scratching your heads, check out the latest discussion on the topic from the latest panel of Steve Zacuto's 'Film Fellas'

I just bought the DR-100 with XLR, and 4 built in mics.

It records great sound. However there is a 'buzz' when the recorded file playback through the in-board speaker. The buzz is not recorded, and also not heard when heahphones are plugged in the device or sent thru the line out to another music system.

Has anyone seen this before? I have only 2 days to return it.

I've noticed over the last 10 years the production industry has undergone a significant upheaval. Prior to the middle '90's, if you wanted to work in the production industry you had to work for an established house, a network or affiliate, or go into major debt to start your own company. Since '96, the technology changed with the advent of DV, MiniDV, the breaking of AVID/Apple's stranglehold on Non-linear Editing and the perfection of the Sony Handycam. Fast-forward to '99 and suddenly not only were professional grade or (prosumer) cameras available (and affordable), hoards of software companies rushed to release new NLE software to the general public so they could do the unthinkable; make their own movies!

In the following 10 years, we've seen the 'guerilla filmmaker' movement evolve into the current 'independent filmmaker' movement. But with Hollywood having taken over the moniker of 'Independent Film' (c'mon, how the hell are Mel Gibson or Robert Redford 'Independent'?) by calling financed films independent and with the rising costs of once affordable production gear, is the Digital Revolution dying or is it dead?

Hi Guys,

I've been in video production for the past 13 years.  I started out doing weddings and any other events that paid (or didn't).  After some time, I upgraded my cameras and computers, which allowed me to upgrade my services.  I started producing local cable commercials for auto dealerships and eventually found a very steady income in real estate advertising.  For eight years, I leased weekly slots of airtime from Time Warner Cable and produced a "video showcase of homes", that aired on the weekends.  You've probably seen similar programming in your area.  The real estate market was great and life was good.  I put a system in place that was very efficient and allowed me to delegate and pay others to put the show together every week.  Needless to say, with the downfall of the real estate market, so too went my bread and butter.  My other clients (auto dealerships, local businesses) have scaled way back on their advertising as well.  It has made life and work very interesting.  But, we never quit!  Ever!  We get creative.  We look outside of the box.  Beyond the typical.  What I've found is a TRUE source of extra income.  I recently found a company that will pay $500 a pop selling their video email product.  No downloads, no attachments and it is crystal clear!  I am the ultimate skeptic.  I analyze everything to the point that it's almost a curse.  But, this is the real deal and they pay real money.  I've started introducing it to my existing clients in both the automotive and real estate businesses and they love it!  The potential for adding new customers because of this is unlimited.  It is an incredible tool that we (the video production community) can add to our arsenal of services.  I would encourage everyone to at least look at the opportunity.  You have NOTHING to lose and KNOWLEDGE to gain.  I think you'll be glad you did.  I am.  Please email me at bhamby@triad.rr.com and I can send you a video to watch.  Or, you can call me at 336-269-2558 if you have any questions.  Thank you so much for your time!

 Hey Guys,

I don't know much about broadcast or the analogue world, and I was just wondering: When broadcasting TV goes digital, will there be such a thing as "broadcast safe?" Didn't broadcast safe have to do with keeping your signal from interfering with another television wave? I just plain don't know....

BarefeetMedia? Any ideas? I recall you saying you've worked in broadcast for over 20 years.

giantonion on "archiving vhs to mini-dv?"

I just recently purchased the Sony DCR HC 48 Handycam... after scouring Apple's iMovie discussion boards, it appears as though I will NOT be able to transfer VHS footage digitally using this camcorder as a pass through. This is definitely a problem for me, as I was hoping to archive many VHS tapes to mini-dv. The emphasis is to archive to mini-dv as opposed to importing all vhs footage directly into iMovie, which could ultimately tie up my internal hard drive (I would like to go through the tapes and edit them at a later date).

<p class="gmail_quote">

If I buy an analog to digital converter, do you know if I can somehow transfer the vhs to a mini-dv cassette with this approach? Again, I would prefer not to directly copy footage into the computer. What about investing in a vcr/mini-dv unit such as the one linked below? It appears as though they are no longer manufacturing these but, given my situation, and the number of tapes I am hoping to archive (and eventually edit), it may be a wise purchase.
