I have been using Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0 on my computer Dell Inspiron laptop and editing Sony camcorder clips with pretty good results. Things have changed. We recently purchased a Nikon D7000 and I'm finding the clips to be 'jumpy' when in the editing software. I set the camera at 720 HD 30 frames. My laptop is running XP Version 2002. Processor 1.70GHz; 1.23 GB RAM. I realize the company should upgrade the laptop. What I'm trying to is find either a reasonably priced laptop (PC because all our software is PC) or better handle the MOV files. A Dell product would be great because the company has Dell account but I'm willing to find anything that works better. Or if somebody has a suggestion that would be great because I'd rather not see our business manager jump out the window when I give her the costs. Thank

What type of graphics card are you currently using? The processor speed (even more so than the graphics card) determines nearly 90% of your computer's editing capability (how well it handles software). There's more to good editing capabilities than a good graphics card.

Also, the vast majority of horse-power graphics cards are expensive. If your system is within five years old, you probably have a good, stable graphics card that's good enough for editing.

About a year ago I got my first editing software, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate V.12. Now I was coming from movie maker so I didn.t care when it said magic bullet looks couldn't work on my computter. Now i'm on v.14 and it still has magic bullet. Once again it shows an error. After talking to some VFX people I know I decided I need to use this software.

So what type of graphics card do I need. I use a dell computter.

Yesterday I went to use my laptop hard for about an hour, and the thing got so hot it started to stutter, and miss keystroke commands. I checked the fans with the diagnostics, and everything seems fine. I keep the thing on a laptop pad (always on), but the thing just gets hot.

I would like to do some video editing on the laptop as well as the desktop (for when I travel), but if it gets so hot, I do not think I will be able to do so. Is it possible to ventilate a Dell Inspiron E1720 case so I do not burn up the hardware?

Thanks guys i really appreciate the help, i called Dell this morning and had them add a additional 500GB hard drive. The way i'm looking at it is i don't want to have to upgrade computers in 3 years so i put in the money to get something that will last. I'm new to this so i'm absorbing any info out there and there is a lot to absorb. My goal is to start a outdoors show in the next year or so, i hear it is a lot of work but it will be something me and my sons enjoy doing. Thanks.

Wow I'm impresed! I'm afraid to know much your high-end Dell system costed, though I'd do the same thing if I could afford it. Your PC will run just fine for video editing. Like composite said, getting an external hardrive is necesary if you don't want your system bogged down by storing large amounts of data, despite the storge capability of your internal SATA hadrive.

Bow,

Yeah, that will work just fine. But you need a second harddrive big time. You do not want to have your OS, NLE software, projects, project previews, video, graphic and audio source media all on the same drive. That's beggin' for trouble with a platinum plated cup. You should partition your current drive (50/50 should work nicely) just so you can have a separate place to store project files and non-video graphics until you can get another drive in there. A good alternative is an external drive preferrably firewire or esata (if your rig has built-in support or if you don't mind spending $45 or more for a PCI esata card) Firewire's built-in unless you want a firewire 800 capable drive. Don't forget to get a UPS backup at least 200w over what your system's power supply is and some reasonable 5.1 (Vegas doesn't support 7.1) speakers to take advantage of that capability. Looks like a 21" monitor came with it. Normally, I say get two monitors (which BTW you should if your serious about editing) but your options are to either; get another similar monitor or get an in expensive HD LCD TV to use as a client monitor. Vegas will link up to either, but when you use supporting programs like photoshop, after effects and others having that second monitor will come in handy. Having a second monitor with Vegas works well too because when you're doing your effects work in Vegas you have room to put the effects editor on the second screen.

Those are just some extras you should be seriously considering. Next time don't get the 'Home' version of any Windows product to put on your nle workstation. You won't have many of the technical controls over the OS you need that you get with 'Pro' or 'Business' versions. You also don't get all of that extra junk that comes with it. Sounds like you're just starting out so you did what you had to. Otherwise, that system should get you started no prob.

If you want to get the most bang for your buck, then definitely build your own PC. If you spend 1500-2000 bucks, build it your self, install only what you need (OS, drivers, and editing software) and keep it completely off of the internet, you can get a stable PC that will compete (horsepower-wise) with a 3k Mac Pro. True, Mac's stability is rock solid. What most people don't realize is that a lot of the problems with PCs come from the average users stupidity (i.e. downloading dangerous software and not being careful on the internet.) If you keep your PC off of the internet completely, and only install the programs you need, you will never get a virus etc.

This is not to bash Apple. I think they are fantastic, and that Microsoft ought to learn a few things from them. But I think that the majority of PC problems come from the PC manufacturers (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) not from the OS and hardware manufacturers.

So, unless you really want a Mac, I would say that the most money-efficient route would be to build your own. Hope this is of some help.

My only recommendation is to not get a Dell. I might get bashed for this but I think Dells suck. I have used a couple of them and their processing speed slows way down over a little while. My harddrive crashed on mine and another friend had dthe same problem with his laptop. HP is a good PC but also look into sony computers. Macs are awesome though and it depends on personal opinion there.

if you are considering the PC route, you can custom build a pc with very nice specs for less than $1700. it's not hard to do and you know what's in it and what programs are installed because you did it.

What you get depends on how much time you need to process your video. A Mac Pro (I have a Mac Pro w/quad processors) can take a one hour movie (after I have done all the editing) less than 2 hours to render, compress, and burn on a DVD.

Now, my wife just bought a MacBook with the 2.5 ghertz Intel processor. It is very fast. You'll need an external harddrive to store any unnecessary files so that the internal drive is available for processing. It cost @ $1,200. And it can process a movie in around 2 hours. Make sure if you get any new Mac, that you then download for free iMovie 6 which is a better movie editing software than the current iMovie. the MacBook Pro laptop costs $800 more but I don't think you get that much more for the money.
