Mark, actually it's EarlC (for Earl Chessher) not Eric, but that's cool ... call me what you want ... smile!

Yes, $600 for a 2-hour, or less, performance gig, when shot correctly and when not spending way too many hours polishing something that quickly attains a law of diminishing returns (it'll NEVER be perfect no matter HOW MANY hours you spend in post) is reasonable IMHO. I try to average $70 per hour for my services and that puts me in the ballpark of my target hourly fee.

It also keeps me competitive. There's a HUGE community of independent and professional (and other) video producers in Southern California, all of them trying to eat my lunch ... smile.

It is FAR more lucrative for me, provided the group membership is 50 or more, to go with the direct-to-parents approach. I ALWAYS exceed my minimums and sometimes copies can get into the 100-plus range ... nice at $25 a pop.

@Eric..is that $600 including the editing of the gig?I am just now getting into the area of paid work and I have no idea what to charge. Some on here have mentioned $1K/ day. That seems high these days, but I have no idea.

True, Bruce, NEVER deliver video without having been compensated, unless of course you have a proven ongoing professional relationship with the client/customer. Once that video is delivered, and/or materials returned, etc. you've lost your leverage for receiving payment.

I charge a flat fee of $600 for the gig, primarily doing what you describe. Or I allow for a fundraising cooperative approach with cost per DVD at $25 and minimum sales, sharing the revenues provided they reach specific numbers, nothing if ONLY the low minimum is sold. This is usually more successful for selling direct to parents rather than charging a flat fee or additional production fee AND trying to sell individual copies.

There are many other issues involved with shooting and selling dance recital videos and what I said above applies specifically to your "pricing" concern. A bounty of potential copyright "gotchas" also exist as well. It can be profitable but try to always be clear on everybody's expectations, including yours.

Most of my video work has been done as a hobby. I was recently offered a job to film dance recitals for a local dance academy. My idea is to use two cameras. One will capture the entire stage while the second camera will zoom in on each dancer in the the number. In post I will do some split screen and switch between cameras. This will require a lot more time editing but should make for a lot better video than just one static camera. I have no idea what to charge for this project. The recital will be 2 hours in length. Any help would be greatly apperciated!!

Thanks Dave,

Depending on the look and feel of the shot design, it can vary of course. I really didn't depend on a certain aperture setting, but went with what I needed in focus to tell the story, my distance between subject. I would say I as around 2.2 if you wanted me to guess. It would be great to have a camera assistant to take down the data, but we only had half a day at each location.

Shoot was done in a weekend. One day at a house in Northern, NJ we loved because of its modern interior and next day, at a club lounge in Brooklyn called Cafe Remy.

It took two days to edit and color grade. We were done that Wednesday.

Very well done. You are going to do well in the future. Good talent.

How does it look on the big screen? Tact sharp? OK? noise? I also have the 5D - what was you average aperture setting? How long do it take to shoot it and how long to make it in post?

OK, here is an open question: In still photography is called the aperture. In movies, it is the iris. But a DSLR like the Canon when used in stills, is it the aperture, but when used in movie mode, is it the aperture or iris? I give!!

This video was shot with the Canon 5D. After some research , I decided to go with the 5D rather than my XH-A1(and renting an DOF adapter).

Work flow was much easier with the 5D, so I was happy with my decision. Hopefully this video helps others make a choice, the new 7D should be another good option and cheaper. Hope you enjoy the video.

I'm not sure this complete suggestion will be within your budget but it is the way I'd approach the problem.

There are two elements, recording the voices and controlling the bleed from the playback.

The recording is fairly straightforward - use good quality wireless mics on each performer who's speaking. The radio packs will need careful and secure fixing and diversity receivers will probably be a good idea as well but otherwise should present no problem. However, remember that you'll pick up the dancers' breathing as well and dancers will breathe heavily so allow plenty of time for the audio post production.

To control the play-in I'd use a trick I learned years ago from a music studio sound engineer. He was always getting complaints from string players (violins, violas) when he was recording them section by section in the studio. They always found the headphones on which the backing track was played to them difficult to wear.

His solution was to play in the backing track into the studio through speakers not headphones but out of phase ie with the the polarity of the speakers reversed. When he mixed the violin/viola tracks (with the backing track in the background) into the combined track because the two backing tracks were out of phase they effectively cancelled each other out.

This isn't an exact science of course, but it's the best solution I know. I've used it often since and I think it would work well in your situation too.

Although amplitude (the loudness of the each track shouldn't matter) it's prudent to keep the track you're wanting to cancel out as low as practical.

Sorry if this is a basic question but I am new to this..

I want to record a video where the actors will talk and dance. I want to have playback for them to dance to but dont want the playback picked up by the mic used for the dialog, this will just be a condenser on a boom, or maybe just the cam mic. I will drop the final sound track in later.

Any helpful tips?

 John,

I will be using Studio 10. I know its not the best, but I am comfortable with its quirks. (Note: It is the camera, not the S/W that converts the native 1080i to SD when exporting the footage via firewire.)

I'm still wondering:

1. Crop the image from 16:9 to 4:3 or use the black-bars to maintain the 16:9

2. I know its hard without seeing the lighting, but any suggestion on actual shutter speed? I suppose I can look at the histogram and adjust for a balance between blur and DOF/Gain

you didn't state what software you are utilizing.... as far as shooting in 1080i, go for it, it will come out nice in SD. I use Vegas Pro 8, it's as easy as importing the footage and rendering a SD product out. as far as the shoot, you will need to set the shutter speed fast enough to not have motion blurring and you'll have to open the iris a bit to get proper exposure with the higher shutter rate. White balance manually and your good to go.

I Posted this is the Sony forum, but as it is not equipment specific, perhaps it belongs here...

My kids got me an early Father's day present HD1000U. (My DW looked at my B&H catalog...)

Anyways, this weekend they have a dance recital. It's a small studio, so there is no Pro videographer. Also, there is no dress rehearsal, so I can not do any test shooting. Anyone care to offer any advice for camera settings?

Scene Select, WB, Shutter, Iris, Exposure?

Even though I only own DVD quality (Standard Definition) equipment (DVD Burner, Regular TV), I was planning on shooting in HDV 1081i format, then down-converting during post production capture. Does this sound right? In the future I can always make a true HD product.

During conversion, should I choose Squeeze (black bars on top/bottom), or crop? I suppose it depends on how well I follow the action. I can always switch back and forth, although this might make for awkward viewing.

I have a sturdy tripod, but should I use steady shot?

Thanks in advance for any other helpful tips.
