 Hi,

Looking for a firewire card to use in a laptop is a PMCIA card this may be scarce. The only advantage of the old technologies is that you can obtain it at a very low price. Inconvenience you have to know the system before to buy it or have a resource to guide you or you risk to buy many material. I think that birdcat suggest the best solution.

Regards,

I guess I negleted to say that my friend has a laptop so signmax first option would not work. Now, the PCMCIA http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815108019&cm_re=1394_to_usb-_-15-108-019-_-Product is $100 ontop of the purchace of an RCA converter. This is getting very expensive. It's too bad they don't make an RCA input on that PCI Express card. It's funny how the industry always seems to have a way to connect anything to anything except the only thing that you want they don't have. Thanks for your help I will relay this valuable info to my friend.

You have several options.

The first (and by far the easiest) is to purchase a combo VHS/DVD recorder. I got one at COstCo for about $140 a year ago and I have, with the click of one button, recorded VHS tapes to DVD's (ok two more buttons - menu & finalize). You can then bring the DVD into your NLE and clean it up there - VOB files are really MPEG-2 files - you can just copy & rename or treat the DVD as a camera version and capture using your normal means for that.

Another option is, if you're using a desktop, do as Max suggested and install a firewire card - I recently go this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815287005) and it works well for under $20.

If you are using a laptop, there are PCMCIA or PCI Express cards like this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815108019&cm_re=1394_to_usb-_-15-108-019-_-Product

I would not go down the road of the converters, like the Dazzle, which connect your vcr to the USB ports - I have tried them in the past and they did not work well at all.

Hi,

Is easy to solve this, go to computer store or Staple store buy a firewire card and install in your computer. This cost less than $50 also you can find second hand for few buck over eBay. New computer has no Firewire because new technology focus on USB 2.0 and now the new USB 3.0 USB cable is standard printer cable, firewire cable need to be purchased is not a current product. Probably you can find a complete high quality old capture system for 10% of the original price.

Regards,

every product for converting analog (VHS) to a digital format seems to have an output via FireWire to the input of my computer. But as I'm finding out not all PC's have a FireWire port. What now? Is there a USB solution or how else does one get there old home movies onto the computer that is not equiped with FireWire. For now, my friend has to bring his crap over to use my computer where then I have to share so that he can get it onto his computer.

Rockstar,

The diff between a 32 and 64-bit system is that a 64-bit computer architecture generally has integer and addressing registers that are 64 bits wide, allowing direct support for 64-bit data types and addresses. In english, that means a 64-bit system can compute 2x more data than a 32-bit system, 4x more than a 16-bit system and so on. With a 32-bit system you can access a tremendous amount of RAM (HP has a new system that has 192GB!) whereas a 32-bit system can access no more than 4 (2-3 if you're lucky.) Your converter sounds like you need 64-bit drivers to support its function in the 64-bit environment. Check the manufacturer's website to see if they have the new drivers.

I had SUPER converter on my old computer which was a 32-bit XP. And now I have a 64-bit Vista computer, and i installed the SUPER converter but now it stops after converting about 3-4 videos. What is the difference between 32 and 64-bit computers, what does it mean exaclty?....and if u know, why doesn't the SUPER converte function preperly...Is there something I can do?

The ADVC-100 is great, but I believe it over $200. I would recommend buying an older DV camera with analog inputs and using it as the converter. I recently found one at a pawn shop for $50 and it works great for converting my VHS.

Yes, it looks like that model of Sony Camcorder doesn't come with any analog inputs. You could use a device like the Canopus ADVC110 to do the conversion for you and come out DV that you could record onto your camcorder. We've used that model here to take some S-vhs footage and move it onto mini-DV with no troubles.

I just recently purchased the Sony DCR HC 48 Handycam... after scouring Apple's iMovie discussion boards, it appears as though I will NOT be able to transfer VHS footage digitally using this camcorder as a pass through. This is definitely a problem for me, as I was hoping to archive many VHS tapes to mini-dv. The emphasis is to archive to mini-dv as opposed to importing all vhs footage directly into iMovie, which could ultimately tie up my internal hard drive (I would like to go through the tapes and edit them at a later date).

<p class="gmail_quote">

If I buy an analog to digital converter, do you know if I can somehow transfer the vhs to a mini-dv cassette with this approach? Again, I would prefer not to directly copy footage into the computer. What about investing in a vcr/mini-dv unit such as the one linked below? It appears as though they are no longer manufacturing these but, given my situation, and the number of tapes I am hoping to archive (and eventually edit), it may be a wise purchase.
