OK, I lied. The real question is, is there some way to use the Canon MXF format (from a Canon XF100) to work with iMovie 11. I don't think I need FCP, as I am doing a simple documentary, with single camera, mostly interviews, nothing fancy at all.

The Canon website lists FCP compatibility, but that adds another 10%+ at least to the price of the camera, plus a whole new learning curve (i.e. massive time sink) I'd rather not go through.

I have found some 3rd party converters that claim to do the job, and they aren't expensive ($35), but on closer inspection, the software is actually coded in Russia, and I have a bad feeling about getting infected with a virus on my Mac.

Any experience and/or advice with this ? Please spare me the "man up and use a real pro editor" advice. I'm not a pro, I already have a complicated day job, I have limited time to spare learning another tool I mostly don't need just to get file compatibility.

Help !!!

I just licensed some wildlife footage to an educational production company. The footage was shot with a Canon ZR200 camcorder and captured via firewire into.avi. They want the raw uncompressed footage so they can edit it themselves. But they don't like .avi. I am not willing to release the original tape and cannot duplicate it so they said Quicktime format on CD or DVD would do. How do I do this in Premiere Elements 2 with as little compression as possible? When I choose to export to Quicktime, the multiple codecs to choose from under the advance tab and all the possible setting variables confuse me. Someone said I would need to download Quicktime Pro to do this properly. Is this true? Why wouldn't a free shareware converter like Apex work just as well?  What is the best way to do this?  Can someone suggest an optimal setting in Premiere 2? Computer is desktop Sony dual processor. OS = Windows XP Media Center edition. Thanks, Judy

I'm probably taking the plunge into an HD camcorder in the near future. However, I'm still using Premiere Pro 2.0 for editing, and upgrading _that_ and my computer system will cost a bit. So I'm wondering about converting AVCHD to DV-AVI so I can edit it (or try to edit it) with my current rig, until I spring for a new one. What are the tradeoffs-- I mean, other than massive files on my hard drive? Is there a loss of color depth? Is DV-AVI limited to certain resolutions, framerates, color scales, etc.?

This problem is slowly being cracked. I have valuable stuff that I can process but as you can see from the forums it's no easy task.

JVC .MOD files straight from JVC Everio are changed by well known file extension trick and as pointed out these do not have all necessary file atributes to be further processed especially by Premiere but they do for Flash 8 Pro. and .flv files are straightforward to make from converted .MOD to .mpg files.

To edit the trick is to import the .mpg files into Premiere6 & 6+ but NOT TO PLAY THEM then drag to Time line and Export Timeline as Quicktime format and fully editable .mov files can be re-imported for any editing process you need.

When I am fully satisfied and have documented procedure I'll post it If any one is interesed

First of all, sorry if my english ins´t great...but i beleive is not so bad either and i will try to explain my problem as best as i can.

Ok, this is something i feel is becoming really important for websites all over the world investing on video news reporting and i (strangelly enough) can´t find any good info about it. So, if someone could help me out i would really be thankfull.

About a year and a half i started a project of video news reporting for a newspaper website. My professional background was in video for TV (i worked as producer and director on a tv news department) and i started only then learning about this wonderfull world of web video.

Usually we make video reports and then bring them in house (on SD Cards) for editing and publishing but lately i´ve been thinking on having the camera operators send me a few clips directly from the reporting site to our offices for almost imeddiate publishing. But what´s the best way to do it?

I want to be able to receive at least decent quality clips so i could do further editing in house so i can´t ask them to send me 320X240 clips. And good quality files are heavy to send over internet and take a large amount of time.

So, does anyone had the same kind of problems? What solutions are available? What´s the best software for conversion (quality/speed)? All ideas on this subjects are important for me and i believe for many other fellow videomakers in your foruns. Thanks for your help.

Have just purchased SDHDC HDMI camcorder from Maplin at £57 off list, purely for home video use. Have also purchased Samsung HD new generation LED TV.

Problem 1, when playing files direct from camera or from a flash stick, TV tells me audio codec not supported.

Problem 2, using a Mac, OSX Leopard operating system, iMovie8 cannot see the camera.

I can copy the AVI files successfully with audio to my Panasonic DVD writer but would prefer to play on TV direct from SD card or flash. I need to convert the AVI files with advanced audio coding into something the TV can use and these are listed as:

Divx 3.11, Divx 4.x, Divx 5.1, Divx 6, XviD, H264 BP, H.264 MP, H.264 HP, MPEG-4 SP, MPEG-4 ASP Motion JPEG and with any of these the TV audio will play MP3, AC3, LPCM, ADPCM (MULAW ALAW) !

I have tried 3ivx Divx Doctor 2 but it told me I needed to purchase more sophisticated software, which I do not want to do unless I can be sure it will work. And I do not want to purchase iMovie9 unless I can be sure it will work and save in the format required after editing.

It may read like I know what I am talking about but I assure you I don't. All these file names are (as a retired, non computer savvy bloke) just gobbledegook to me.

Can anybody help please - talk slowly.....

I have some questions about source editing for DVD creation using Everio .mod files as the source. I currently film for a halau in my area using a JVC GZ-MG330 camcorder. Now, I realize that the source I'm pulling from the Everio, even on highest settings, are not going to be of the best quality but as of this time it's all I've got to work with.

Onto my questions -> I've tried various different programs and techniques for editing my videos and authoring them to DVD and I keep coming back to the TMPGEnc suite of programs as coming out with the best quality, for me at least. I've worked with the videos using PowerDirector and PowerCinema which come with it, and I've also tried Sony Vegas and Adobe Premier. Believe it or not, the Cyberlink solutions came out with some decent looking video output to the DVDs. At this time what I'm doing is using MPEG Streamclip to convert the video to a compliant MPEG format and make my cuts then using the TMPGEnc tools to tweak and then finally author the DVD.

Is there any way I can make my edits any easier, without having to re-encode and lose quality from an already finicky source? I'm mainly either cutting a full performance video into individual songs, taking out camera shifts and such between songs during the cutting process, or combining multiple song footage into 1 file so that I then can create the chapter breaks in the authoring software.

TMPGEnc has so far given me the best results, and it's somewhat frustrating because I will spend an unbelievably long time working with a new piece of software, because I'm stubborn and just 'KNOW' there has to be an easier/faster way, and then the result comes out of such low quality that I am unwilling to let it out of my hands so I go back with TMPGEnc and make short work of it to finish it out for production.

Now, I do this work for the halau for free, my wife dances and teaches hula for them and I video performances for their teaching purposes and for the families of some of the dancers. But even though I perform this service gratis, I still have some pride. I am going to be upgrading to a better camera, but for now this is the only one I have.

Thanks for any assistance that you can provide.

Hey guys,
i hope i'm posting in the right section of the forum.
so, i made a commercial shooted in DVCPRO 720p, and i made all the work in a timeline with the same settings (DVCPRO HD 50, progressive etc.).
Now, since i need to make a master that's a 4:3 DV-Pal, i export my timeline and put it directly into a DV-pal one, so that it will directly match the frame size to a 4:3 letterbox. obviously there's a loss of quality since it's a DV timeline, but i can't really understand why the footage suddenly appears to be interlaced, even if the setting of the DV timeline is progressive. i mean, watching it in a TV monitor it has the smoothness of a progressive footage, but some strange lines (really similar to the ones of a bad interlaced) appears in the footage.
any idea and/or suggestion? what am i missing? thanks in advance!
michele
