I use a Canon XH-A1 to videotape barrel races and need to make it where contestants can view their race from earlier in the day. My problem is that I only have one camera and I'm still using it to film other races that continue throughout the day. I typically have my laptop so I can hook up a different camera to it that uses mini DV tapes but don't want to spend much money. Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent camcorder that uses mini DV tapes I can purchase for this purpose? I saw some tape decks but they were out of my market.

I have my current setup with dual 27" displays running on a QuadCore Desktop, its nothing special but it gets my work done. Friends have been wanting me to upgrade my stuff so that I can edit their Indy projects. I have been wanting to upgrade anyway as I got a new job as a commercial editor and I would like to do some of my work at home.

I am going to build my own computer to use Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere, my budget is 15,000$

I can build a computer myself as I have built several what I have no clue about is more advanced setups for video editing. I keep hearing about Kona3G and BlackMagic but I don't know exactly how they integrate.I would love to have scopes to check all my stuff for broadcast, speakers for surround sound setup and editing.

Honestly I'm just at a complete loss of where to start once I get the base computer setup. Here is what I have so far (I'll store all my video/projects on my server):

Two Video Editing Monitors - Asus VH242H

Motherboard - Asus P6X58D-E

Processor - Intel Core i7-970 Gulftown 3.2Ghz

RAM -Corsair XMS 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 (x4)

Hard Drive - Western Digital AV-GP WD10EURS 1TB 64MB Cache SATA

Graphics Card (for two monitors) - PNY VCQFX3800-PCIE-PB Quadro FX 3800 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

That is my base to work with now what I need is to figure out the rest of the setup

Capturing HD, SD and being able to Listen to and Edit Surround Sound. Should I just buy a Surround Sound card and get some quality speakers (I was thinking KRK Speakers) and somehow to hook up a broadcast CRT monitor and then also support a HD TV connection for previewing to clients and stuff, do I just need another graphics card or should I look into something like Blackmagic or Kona?

I'm sure you'll have questions for me to help figure out more of my needs, I'll answer what I can.

Hello,

I am video taping in front of my very large wall mounted computer screen. Actually, its a 55" Plasma TV. I have a dest facing the screen that I sit at and I have a camcorder on a small tripod with the camera facing me on the desk. I want to video tape myself as i face the computer screen. The problem with this is that I turn all blue. The room has an incandescent ceiling light above. I have temporarily cured the situation by adding an 8.5" clamp light with an incandescent 60watt bulb and two diffusers on it clamped to one side of the monitor. When I clamped it to the top of the tv, it gave me shadows underneath my eyes from my glasses that look like a football players black lines. With the light mounted to the side of the tv, one side of my face get illuminated more than the other sort of like documentary style. I can live with this for now unless anyone has any beter suggestions.

It is very bright and in my face, but teh second diffuser helps a little. I placing it to the side of the tripod, but it was so bright in my face that it didn't look good and it made a reflection in my glasses. The point of this is to be able to view the screen while making it look like I am staring into the camera. I can even have my dialogue on the screen or notes to help me remember what I'm lecturing about.

I know that when you have incanescent lights in the room, you should use incandescent lighs to light the video and if you have fluorescent lights, you should use fluorescent lighting, but my question is, which type of lighting is better matched to the bluish hue given off by my monitor?

Thanks for your help

I'm currently using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, After effects and photoshop on a HP workstation laptop. I can't preview 1080 footage if i've done absolutely anything to it and transcoding takes an age.

I've just been given the go-ahead to upgrade both hardware and software, so i'm about to upgrade to CS5, but i have no idea what computer to get. Advice on the web is patchy at best!

ANy help in this area would be greatly appreciated. I have to be able to order this in the UK...

Another newbie question:

I have just recently gotten into video making. I started out by getting the Samsung HMX H100. It is a decent camcorder for the beginner. I found that my HD videos were jumpy and/or zig-zaggy when viewing them. I thought that the SD card couldn't handle the capture rate the camera was operating at. It has no internal memory. The SD card is a 4 gig/class 10. SO... I went ahead and bought a canon hf m31. It is a great camera with 32G of internal memory. I am still experiencing the same problems.

My video editor is Windows Movie Maker that came with my computer. I got my computer mainly to browse the internet and run quicken. Now I'm starting to think that my computer is underpowered or too slow to process the videos. It has a graphics card... i think. the only information I can find says: Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelorator Driver for Mobile. I don't know if that describes the card or just the driver the computer uses with its stock video chip/card.

Now, down to the meat of the post. I am interested in learning more about video making. I want to have the tools available. I don't plan on turning pro but to just continue this as a hobby. I want to try and make short films and other produced videos. I am considering keeping my present computer and purchasing a dedicated computer for video production only... plus internet capabilities so I can upload to YouTube. With that in mind here are my questions:

Should I stay with a PC or look at a Mac?

What should be the minimum requirements for my processor, video card/graphics card.

That is basically all I know to ask about at the moment.

Is there another thread that covers this? I read a thread where a person had built a dedicated computer but was having trouble deciding on the graphics card. If you built a dedicated computer what would you put in it.

Thanks for the help.

No USB outlet, AV Jack only. I bought a Sony DCR-HC96 trying to link one to the other and then into the computer, because all the research indicated that the DCR-HC96 was he only one with pass thru capacity, ie, converted analog to digital, but of course, can't find the right cables anywhere to connect these two either. Any help most appreciated

I was just wondering what specification for a computer people reccomend to edit HD footage, in terms of RAM, processor, graphics card etc. Ive been told i7, 6gb of ram and 1 gb graphics card is perhaps the most ideal for editing HD smoothly and reasonly speedly. Ive been torn between PC and MAC but when looking at the prices, its ridiculous i can buy a PC with i7 and 6gb ram etc for a reasonable price but when looking at a MAC with the exact same specification, it cost around 3 times as much, why is this? is a mac much better or is just simply because the fact that it's a MAC.

A very good friend of mine (getting a degree in Computer Engineering.)is going to build me a custom computer. It is gonna cost a hell of a lot less then any from a brand. And obviously I want it specifically for editing, and other video/film tasks.

My friend is a very smart tech guy, where I am not. So he raddled off names of video cards, sound cards, etc. that are top of the line for gaming mostly. But he knows nothing about Video Editing computer equipment, and I don't either. So I was wondering if I could get some help from the community.

What should I get for a great video editing computer? what kind of Video Card, Sound Card, or any other cards that will aid in video editing. As well as what Media drives should I get, etc. If you could build your own system, what would you want in it as a video profesional?

Thanks to all.

I have the opportunity to do a training video, with most of the information being presented on how to use a new program on the computer, complete with the mouse arrow and key strokes. How do you record all this activity being done on a computer? Years ago, I remember doing some recording with a windows movie program, but that was a long time ago. Is there a program you can use to record this activity on a computer, or do you need to do a CU of the screen, and watch for glare?

Hello There,

I have just purchased Vegas Pro 8. I know 9 is
coming out in 2 weeks, but I got a pretty smoking deal for 8. So I
have the software, but now I need a computer to run it on. I have been
getting mixed answers on where to get a computer. Some people on here
say don't buy from a big manufacture because they don't know what they
are doing. But I talked to some colleagues of mine (In fact, one of
them is a Vegas Expert) and they are using computers from Dell, HP,
Sony. I also have noticed some other people on here recommend building
a computer. On that note, I know how to drive the car, but not fix or
rebuild an engine like a car mechanic does. I would love to know how
to do that, but I was not blessed with those talents. Some people also
say get a local computer shop to build one, but I heard that is
expensive to do so. Plus I just moved here to Colorado and I don't
know any local shops I could trust to buy from. Bottomline is I am
looking for a computer that will be reliable, will be a workhorse. I
do not want to run into a problem 6 months later and realized that I
should have gotten more storage or a faster this or that, yada, yada,
yada.... I am guessing you guys are getting my drift. I also would
like to make sure if I go desktop that I would get a tower to be able
to make changes to the computer in the future if I need to. One more
thing to, Desktop or Laptop? It would be nice to be able to go mobile,
so if a client needs something right then and there, I have the ability
to do so. I just feel like the Desktop will tie me down and it is
bulky while moving it, but it may be good for me to do so. I realize
the Desktop will probably have a higher performance level than a laptop
to. Well, I hope I didn't leave any important info out. Thank you for
your time, your help and your responses.

Thank you,

Chad

P.S.
My budget is $5000, but I would like to spend under $2500, so I can
save money and spend money on other things I need for my video
production business. But I am willing to pay, what I need to pay to
make sure I have a very good performing computer, so I don't have to
waste my time trying to fix and deal with problems with this computer.
One more thing, I am very open to any suggestions on the direction I
need to go with getting this computer. Thank you again!

 Hi everyone

I am currently buying new parts for my desktop computer and my brother and I are trying to decide what to buy first. We want the following

1. 4GB RAM

2. 1TB Hard Drive

3. 1GB HDMI Video Card

We are saving money to buy all of them, but right now we can only buy one item (Our video making passion is kind of expensive, but we dont care because we love what we do) Our computer have a Intel Motherboard, Intel Pentium 4 processor and is able to work from 115V to 230V. It currently has 256MB Video Card, 256MB of RAM, 115GB Hard drive, runs Windows XP and it has two fans and we cannot put more.

We will use this computer for video editing (with Sony Vegas Pro 8), video special effects(with FX Home Vision Lab Studio), graphics designs (with Abobe Photoshop, Corel Paint Shop Pro and Blender), Web designing (with Microsoft Expression Web) and Audio editing (with Adobe Audition).

We want to know which of the three items should we buy first so we could start using it as an editing computer. We also want to know if the computer could be capable of handling such pressure with the current fans and motherboard.

Thank You and keep doing video.

So I'm looking to buy a new computer and editing platform. I'm currently using an older version of Adobe premiere. Anyways, my budget is about $3,500 - $4,000 and I currently get student discounts on either Final Cut Studio 2 or Adobe CS4. Should I go Mac or PC? Any help or suggestions would be great.

Hi there

I am very new to this, bought a camera have shot some footage & have captured & edited it using WMM and burnt it to disc using Image Burn.

The result on playback on the DVD is very blurred & pixellated. Actually when captured on the computer its quite blurry also. As opposed to just through the TV, looks superb...

I have Windows XP.

My questions are:

Is blurryness due to my hardware or software(or both)? I am considering getting Adobe Premier, but not certain.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi everyone:

I am posting here because by husband has the Sony VX2100 camera so this seemed like the best forum to go to :)

He has an associates degree in film and just recently got back into it as a hobby. He started shooting some weddings (helping friends out) and wanted to start doing some other projects. He needs a way to edit though and his birthday is coming up and I would like to get him a new computer and program to do that with.

What do you all recommend? I am totally clueless (and not rich) but would like something that is beyond our 6 year old Dell desktop with an old version of Pinnacle that is just TERRIBLE. I know he likes FinalCut, but is a Mac the best way to go? And which one? Thanks so much in advance!

Hello, Everyone. I trying to find the right computer for video editing and need Help! First off let me tell you what I've been through. I bought a HP m9000t with Q6700 4 gigs of ram and gt8600 card. it froze up during rendering. HP could not help at all. I sent it back. Then I bought a Dell XPS 420 Q6600 with 4 gigs of ram and a 880GTX card. Same thing in 4 differant programs, froze up during video rendering. I spent 9hrs on the phone with dell in 2 weeks, they can't figure it out either.. Now I thinking of getting a Mac pro. Ive been to the store 4 times. There all kinds of problems on that one too. Don't know what else to do. Also on both computers I was  using OS Vista and Windows Movie Maker did work with no problem at all.

I have been trying to use other programs for editing such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere 6 & 5, Roxio 9 & 10 and Muvee 6 all froze up.

What type of computer is everyone else using? please be specific. I'm try to keep under $3500. You may also e-mail me at spakls@hotmail.com

 Thanks yo so much.

Hi,
I am currently looking to purchase a new computer to run Vegas 8 and DVD Architect. I realize the importance of having a large hard drive as well as much RAM that one can get. My question to you experienced editors/users out there is; what are you using for a computer that's held up rock solid for you? Which System do you feel is better; Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista? I currently have Windows XP Pro SP2. It can be either a desk top or a laptop. I do use an external 500 GB hard drive other than the hard drive on my computer when editing.
Your suggestions in regards to computers as well as any DVD writers/burners would be most appreciated. Thanks, Ray
