I use Go Daddy's File Folder to send files to my clients. Small sample files, mind you, 1000 MB limit. Cost $10 a year. Simple to upload and send.

I use a Canon XH-A1 to videotape barrel races and need to make it where contestants can view their race from earlier in the day. My problem is that I only have one camera and I'm still using it to film other races that continue throughout the day. I typically have my laptop so I can hook up a different camera to it that uses mini DV tapes but don't want to spend much money. Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent camcorder that uses mini DV tapes I can purchase for this purpose? I saw some tape decks but they were out of my market.

I have my current setup with dual 27" displays running on a QuadCore Desktop, its nothing special but it gets my work done. Friends have been wanting me to upgrade my stuff so that I can edit their Indy projects. I have been wanting to upgrade anyway as I got a new job as a commercial editor and I would like to do some of my work at home.

I am going to build my own computer to use Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere, my budget is 15,000$

I can build a computer myself as I have built several what I have no clue about is more advanced setups for video editing. I keep hearing about Kona3G and BlackMagic but I don't know exactly how they integrate.I would love to have scopes to check all my stuff for broadcast, speakers for surround sound setup and editing.

Honestly I'm just at a complete loss of where to start once I get the base computer setup. Here is what I have so far (I'll store all my video/projects on my server):

Two Video Editing Monitors - Asus VH242H

Motherboard - Asus P6X58D-E

Processor - Intel Core i7-970 Gulftown 3.2Ghz

RAM -Corsair XMS 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 (x4)

Hard Drive - Western Digital AV-GP WD10EURS 1TB 64MB Cache SATA

Graphics Card (for two monitors) - PNY VCQFX3800-PCIE-PB Quadro FX 3800 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

That is my base to work with now what I need is to figure out the rest of the setup

Capturing HD, SD and being able to Listen to and Edit Surround Sound. Should I just buy a Surround Sound card and get some quality speakers (I was thinking KRK Speakers) and somehow to hook up a broadcast CRT monitor and then also support a HD TV connection for previewing to clients and stuff, do I just need another graphics card or should I look into something like Blackmagic or Kona?

I'm sure you'll have questions for me to help figure out more of my needs, I'll answer what I can.

Hi Chicago,

A lot of monitors have color settings that can be adjusted. Turning the blue settings down should help. If your monitor doesn't have this ability, you can cover the screen with a CTO (color temperature orange) gel. Often in movies, they will use CTO gels to cover entire windows to block the "blueness" of the outdoor light from spilling inside a room. I would imagine this would help with the blueness of your monitor spilling onto your face. However, I would try changing the color settings first, since is is essentially the same idea, and will save you a few bucks.

Yeah... but... it does make you look more realistic if you have the light from the screen reflected on your face. It's a technique that has been used in countless movies and TV shows, and for a good reason. I think the only time you would not want that realistic look is if it distracts from your message.

The best result you can get if your camera is good enough is to film in near darkness where the only light source is the monitor and show it reflecting off your skin... looks awesome and very real. I also have found that when you cut to the over-the-shoulder or POV showing the screen, you get a better result in a no-light situation than you do in a room with light.

Standard LCD monitors seem to give a better result than CRT or Plasma. I don't know why. But I have found that filming LCD monitors (I used IBM ThinkVision monitors) in complete darkness, where the monitor was the only light source, and with Linux (which has typically clearer, sharper fonts than Windows XP) gave outstanding results and it was really easy to read the text on the screen and show user activity happening on the screen in that situation. I got great contrast, really clear image, and no distortion, flicker or annoyances.

Hello,

I am video taping in front of my very large wall mounted computer screen. Actually, its a 55" Plasma TV. I have a dest facing the screen that I sit at and I have a camcorder on a small tripod with the camera facing me on the desk. I want to video tape myself as i face the computer screen. The problem with this is that I turn all blue. The room has an incandescent ceiling light above. I have temporarily cured the situation by adding an 8.5" clamp light with an incandescent 60watt bulb and two diffusers on it clamped to one side of the monitor. When I clamped it to the top of the tv, it gave me shadows underneath my eyes from my glasses that look like a football players black lines. With the light mounted to the side of the tv, one side of my face get illuminated more than the other sort of like documentary style. I can live with this for now unless anyone has any beter suggestions.

It is very bright and in my face, but teh second diffuser helps a little. I placing it to the side of the tripod, but it was so bright in my face that it didn't look good and it made a reflection in my glasses. The point of this is to be able to view the screen while making it look like I am staring into the camera. I can even have my dialogue on the screen or notes to help me remember what I'm lecturing about.

I know that when you have incanescent lights in the room, you should use incandescent lighs to light the video and if you have fluorescent lights, you should use fluorescent lighting, but my question is, which type of lighting is better matched to the bluish hue given off by my monitor?

Thanks for your help

Last May I ordered a new HP and upgraded to CS5. I just got their performance one and topped out the graphics card and memory. It smokes Full AVCHD faster than I used to edit SD. Everything is so fast and my work space in AE is huge. I also got the largest monitor they had vs. going to split screen and am totally happy with all the above.

I paid about 2,200-2,300 for the computer and ran right around 3 with the upgrade and since I was cleared for more like you are I snuck in a couple 1tb externals for storage of HD video. Yhe only thing about the whole upgrade for me was that Esata Externals are finiky with windows 7 for some reason, I haven't looked into a work around and just ran firewire to them when I need them.

This worked well for me. I am in Canada and had no problem getting the components needed.

Well... I went ahead and ordered a new computer today. It should do well.

I'm confident this will handle the HD. The i7 would have bumped the price up to a bit more than I was willing to spend.

Yes... it looks like my computer is woefully underpowered.

Intel Pentium Dual CPU T2310 @ 1.46GHz

Memory (RAM) 1.00 GB

There is no information of a video card so I'm probably just using the motherboard for video processing.

Hobbies can get expensive I think. I will take this information and decide on the editing software I'd like to use and then find a computer that will run it with power to spare.

Steve,

Right off If you're not using Windows Live Movie Maker you're going to have problems using HD video. As Crafters mentioned, the real culprit may be your computer is not fully up to the task of pushing AVCHD video. That's a common problem as all computer companies will tout their computers will allow you to 'play your videos and blah, blah, blah' but don't mention there are specific requirements the system must meet to 'play them well'.

AVCHD compressed video is currently still a bear to process compared to straight DV. At the bare minimum, you need a single-core CPU rated at 2.8GHz and 3GB of RAM just to get it to work reasonably. Actually, a dual-core CPU rated 2.66GHz (I currently use a quad-core duo 2.4 and an i7 quad-core to work with HD), 4GB of RAM (8 or more makes editing life easier) and don't forget a video card that is capable of pushing HD video. You're probably using onboard video capacity from your motherboard and that's rarely as powerful as a dedicated video card.

As for 'getting a mac' goes, you can run into a similar problem of being underpowered and just spent some more money with that option too. However, before you decide to either upgrade or get another unit altogether, are you using a laptop or desktop? Is it a name brand or an office workstation you're just using at home? Next, check out your computer specifications (CPU, RAM and Video Card=GPU) either through your written documentation or by going into the control panel and looking up 'system'.

If your components are rated below the minimum numbers I mentioned, that's your problem. If they meet or exceed those numbers then you should look into getting some inexpensive editing software like Vegas Movie Studio or the like. You'll still have to make sure your unit meets the requirements for the new software so be advised as you may have the same problem.

I am sure others will chime in as they read this.

Froms the specs on the Samsung HMX H100 the SDHC card should not be a problem at a class 10 although 4G is kind of small.

PC or MAC? If you already work with a PC understand you will have some learning curve with the MAC OS on top of trying to learn your video editing.

As far as what type of computer, and the minimum requirements should be, will depend a lot on what editing software you plan to use. There are several good editing programs out there for less than $100 to get you started. You will want to look at them, their minimum specs (take care to look at what it takes to run HD video editing as they tend to list two tiers, one for SD and one for HD) and than look into a computer that is somewhat above those specs with respect to processor, ram, and video card to display the video to give you some room to grow.

You will want one with 2 HDD, one for your OS and programs and the other for your data to make it easier when editing as well.

And yes there are many other threads that cover this as well, some in great detail.

Another newbie question:

I have just recently gotten into video making. I started out by getting the Samsung HMX H100. It is a decent camcorder for the beginner. I found that my HD videos were jumpy and/or zig-zaggy when viewing them. I thought that the SD card couldn't handle the capture rate the camera was operating at. It has no internal memory. The SD card is a 4 gig/class 10. SO... I went ahead and bought a canon hf m31. It is a great camera with 32G of internal memory. I am still experiencing the same problems.

My video editor is Windows Movie Maker that came with my computer. I got my computer mainly to browse the internet and run quicken. Now I'm starting to think that my computer is underpowered or too slow to process the videos. It has a graphics card... i think. the only information I can find says: Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelorator Driver for Mobile. I don't know if that describes the card or just the driver the computer uses with its stock video chip/card.

Now, down to the meat of the post. I am interested in learning more about video making. I want to have the tools available. I don't plan on turning pro but to just continue this as a hobby. I want to try and make short films and other produced videos. I am considering keeping my present computer and purchasing a dedicated computer for video production only... plus internet capabilities so I can upload to YouTube. With that in mind here are my questions:

Should I stay with a PC or look at a Mac?

What should be the minimum requirements for my processor, video card/graphics card.

That is basically all I know to ask about at the moment.

Is there another thread that covers this? I read a thread where a person had built a dedicated computer but was having trouble deciding on the graphics card. If you built a dedicated computer what would you put in it.

Thanks for the help.

Steve

Robert,

Really depends on how much cash you want to chuck at this and whether you're more comfy working in the mac or pc environments. Just so you know the majority of the systems you see demoing CS5's MPE are tricked out with lots of high-end RAM (up to 32GB), dual multi-core CPU's (8-12), Solid-State Drives on at least the OS drive and the mid-range or better of the 3 NVIDIA GPU's recommended. Just those components alone are verrrry expensive. For a workstation like that, cheap is not the operative word. At that level Mac's or PC's cost pretty much the same give or take a few thou' here or there.

If you're not into building your own workstations then as I said pre-built mac's or pc's are your only bets. Though both types use the very same components now (unless you use AMD CPU's) slight differences in the OS' and supporting software/gear are where they diverge. The mac guru's can tell you more about the latest 'G-whatever' and it's strong/weak points. On the PC end for pre-builts I'd have to say that the HPZ800 is the kingpin workstation (seriously rivalling anything apple has to offer too) for under $10k. Here's a review of the Z800 that goes into far more detail than I care to. If you want to know more about how to build a comparable WS, that's another post altogether.

HPZ800 Review

If you're running a serious outfit and can justify the investment, whether mac or pc you'll need a spec'd out rig to run this new software at the level to make it worth the money.

I've decided to bite the bullet and buy Adobe Creative Suite 5 Production Premium. What do you think is the best computer and/or computer configuration for this software? The computer will be largely dedicated to video production work.
