Mark,

First, what do you mean when you say, "I set the output to H.264?" Are you changing the Compressor setting of the timeline in FCP, or are you going to Quicktime conversion and choosing H.264 compression? If you're changing your timeline Compressor, that's wrong. Keep that at ProRes422.

Second, don't even use Quicktime Conversion. Export a Master by going to File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Make sure you're exporting at Current Settings and the Make Movie Self-Contained option is check marked. Then bring your Master into Compressor to create your H.264 and MPEG files. Compressor will do a better job.

Also, you didn't explain your H.264 settings...

Mark,

I take my m2ts clips, archive them 'as-shot', then make a conversion to the PAL equivalent of your format (720 x 576) in mpg2 of good quality. I am not familiar with the procedure to be followed in Apple's 'Final Cut', because I do not use it. A great deal depends upon the quality of 'codecs', (I use 'Main Concept') and what settings you employ. For example I have reduced my GOP's to twelve, from the default fifteen. Taken overall, that sometimes gives your clips an 'edge', because of the increased density of the all-important 'I-frames'. Within mpg2, itself, I tweak everything up close to the upper-limits permitted by the DVD-Standard. That makes for somewhat larger files and longer processing-times, but pays dividends in the quality of the finished product. My philosophy is that having my footage, for editing, available as good-quality mpg2 saves a lot of hassles and permits a very direct route to disc. But, some purists might not agree with that, with (say) my bit-rate of 9200, for example, as standard. There is another school of thought which regards hoisting the rate above 7000, as a waste-of-time, just the same as there are those who say that you cannot 'improve' on 'ffmpeg' as a codec. What I do know, is that I am quite happy with the comparatively minor amount of the original m2ts image-quality which has to be sacrificed on the way to DVD. None of this addresses your problem, directly, but some of it may be helpful.

I take my ,mts files and throw them into Toast converting them to Apple ProRes 422, to edit into Final Cut Pro 7. I will edit my piece, then using Quicktime conversion in FCP, I set the output to usually h.264, and the size sometimes to 720x480, 16:9 since I seldom need pure HD, and export it to my external hard drive. If I compress I use MPEG Streamclip, but I don't usually compress all that much since I editing short pieces mostly.

I am having some trouble with codecs and compression when I am outputting in Final Cut Pro Studio 7.

I transfer all my .mts files to Apple ProRes 422, and proceed to edit. When I am done with the edit and ready to output, I generally select h.264 but sometimes I use Mpeg 4. When I output my video looks a little pixelated and not near as sharp as others that use h.264. I might be overlooking a setting when I export, hence the question here in the forum.

If you captured it with firewire.....Just convert it from .avi dv file (720x480) to .mov dvcpro (720x480). Keep it interlaced and you should have no generation loss... by the way they should be able to use a .avi dv file if you captured it with firewire.

I'm having trouble compressing a video (NTSC, .dv format) without getting blockiness in the red area. The .dv file does not have it, but when compressing for playback on a Brightsign player, every file I make has this blockiness. I've tried H.264, and both HD and SD MPEG-2 Transport Streams. (screenshot attached)

Any suggestions for file formats that wouldn't have this problem, or maybe I just need to change a setting in Compressor? I could also use Sorensen Squeeze 6 if it would help.

Currently I'm just doing trial and error, but I'm running out of time, so any advice is appreciated.

If you have Adobe's Media Encoder you use the drop down menu to get Quick Time format and use the compression of none. That will do the trick but the file will be huge. I just recreated a 30 second commercial and that is the format they wanted and it turned out to be 1.2 gigs.

So, I ended up having to cut my project in half and write a dot mov for each half and then compress each half. Little bit of a pain in the rear but it looks decent enough. Not ideal for my liking but the producer doesn't mind. I would like to know why I was getting that problem. My thought is that compressor had issues breaking down the information with the bright colors, dark shadows and the sun light coming through the trees. Any of that make sense?

I'm having some major issues when compressing my dot mov out of compressor into DVD format. Lots of flickering or artifacting is happening. These problems are not in my dot mov so it's obvious the problem lies in Compressor. My dot my is in Apple ProRes 422 and I'm compressing to DVD. The video here looks funny because it is the DVD mpeg 2 compression but you can still see the issue happening. I've tried different compression settings and am at the end of my rope. Any suggestions or help?

Yea, change your sequence settings back to ProRes. Then export a self-contained Quicktime of your timeline. (File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Make sure the drop-down menu is set to Current Settings)

Bring that exported file into Compressor and apply the TRANSPORT Stream MPEG-2.

Changing the Rate Conversion to Better or Best will not do anything unless you're actually doing a frame rate conversion.

Not sure why you want to de-interlace either. De-interlacing doesn't increase quality. The reason why it may have looked better is interlaced material doesn't look too great on a computer monitor, so de-interlacing may have led you to believe you did something good when you viewed your MPEG file on your computer. Is there a reason you're trying to de-interlace?

Also, keep in mind that the station is looking at your file on broadcast monitors, which is what you should be looking at as well. It's not doing you any good judging your image quality while looking at a computer screen.

Increasing the bit rate should result in better quality, but check with the station you are delivering to and make sure they don't have a limit. They really should have provided you with specifications. Also, do not change the GOP. It should be left at IBBP, Closed.

Also, since you're converting HD to SD, go into the Frame Controls pane, turn on Frame Controls, and change the Resize filter to Best.

Shoot in HD and to be honest, I think I have this project with the wrong sequence settings. Usually, I'm in ProRes 422. Oops. I used Program Stream MPEG-2 setting in Compressor and at first used the default settings. Junkie. Then I increased the Rate Conversion from fast to better and the Deinterlace from fast to better as well. This produced a better picture for sure but certainly not beautiful. The station approved of the test vids I sent so maybe I'm just being overly critical.

Would increasing my bitrate range give me a quantitative improvement of picture quality. Obviously, I'd like to see a noticed improvement compared to the amount of time it would take to compress.

Thanks for all your help as well. I just became a member of the community recently and this is a great resource to have.

What kind of footage are you working with, and why are you working in Apple Intermediate Codec. That's a pretty crappy codec.

Which MPEG2 preset are you using in Compressor and what are your settings?

Since you're going to broadcast TV, don't forget about staying within legal color levels: 16 - 235. Sony Vegas has tools to help with this, I am unaware of FCP's toolset so someone who does this with FCP should chime in here,

I've recently been asked to begin compressing some video for SD television. The engineer with the Television station would like an mpeg-2 format but when compressing out of Compressor the video looks terrible. Worse than compressing for a DVD. Anyone have any suggestions on mpeg-2 compression settings that will increase my quality of picture. I use FCP with the Apple Intermediate Codec in my timeline. Another question, is there another compression program that would be better for television compression.

thanks - I need a few hours/days to digest your answer to my first question - and thanks for the answer to the 'deck' question. I don't use tapes, so I guess that's something I don't really need to worry about! Thanks again -

oops...didn't answer your other question.

Umm, sure I guess you could burn out the FW or USB ports. That's not very common in my opinion though. The reason you want a deck is because you can wear out the heads if you have a tape based camera. A deck is more robust. And a deck is just another term for VTR. We just say deck because we like to confuse people and make ourselves feel smart. We're such decks aren't we?

The type of deck you want depends on the type of tape you recorded. There are decks for Beta tapes, DVCPro HD tape, miniDV tape, whatever. Here's a link to B&H:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2%7C0&ci=2129&N=4294545363

If you are recording to solid state media, i personally don't think it's THAT big of a deal to use your camera to ingest. It's nice to have a card reader if you're shooting out in the field and need an assistant to offload footage while you continue shooting.

"is there someplace online that actually explains compression settings and teaches you when to use what settings on FCP or using the mac compressor"

Hmm....sounds like something good for me to write about since I've been horrible at keeping up with my blog.

Look up the difference between Long GOP and I-frame compression. Some cameras record Long GOP based formats, such as HDV and XDCam, while others record I-frame based formats, like DVCPro HD.

I-frame codecs are more edit friendly, but Long GOP takes up less hard drive space.

Your camera, if I remember correctly, shoots HDV. So converting to ProRes gets you out of Long GOP compression (and there are some other benefits as well). When you compressed for the web, you probably converted to a codec that DOES use Long GOP compression. so it was a smaller file size and more web friendly.

....that should get you off on the right foot, at least until I write more about it on my blog
