I have not yet seen any comparisons between these two cameras. I know, they're both brand new on the market and there hasn't been much time to do a real in-depth analysis. So without having them in my hands, here are just a small sampling of the differences I've seen online that might tip the scales toward one or the other:

Price...
Sony: about two grand
Canon: about two grand

Interchangeable lenses...
Canon: Nope
Sony: Yup

Mic inputs...
Canon: 2 XLR's
Sony: single stereo 1/8" jack

On-board microphone...
Canon: Nope, but there's a mount + individual audio controls
Sony: Yup, that awesome 4-pod thingy

Kit lens...
Sony: 18-200mm
Canon: "35mm equivalent of" 30.4mm - 304mm

Still photo capability...
Sony: JPG, 14.6 megapixel
Canon: nope

Anybody been able to test both of these side-by-side yet?

The folks at Zacuto have finally put up this last episode and I strongly believe those of you trying to decide between a traditional video camera and a DSLR will be able to make up your minds after watching this.

As promised, today Tony Wiess and the Zacuto Team released part I of "The Great Shootout" where the top performing DSLR cameras go head to head in comparison against motion picture film. In this first episode, film latitude (the ability for film to be over or underexposed and still get an acceptable image) is examined. Though DSLR's use a video sensor instead of film, the sensitivity to highlight and shadow detail can still be measured in the same manner. Watch as the DSLR's perform against film in this series of tests and hear top flight pro's from George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch, the American Film Institute (AFI) and others from the motion picture industry give their comments. I think you'll be surprised!

So i have an opportunity to get a used cannonXL2 for only 200 more than my PD150 which I could trade. Just how superior is the XL2 to the PD 150?

I am still feeling it out, it smells a little fishy. A guy in Oakland has a jvc 200U for 3500, and could be worked lower, really wants to sell fast had it listed for a few days at 4100.00. when I said it was more money than i had considered he then offered up the XL2. the XL2 which is not listed (on craig's list, the JVC is).

He wanted me to go to Oakland with cash today or tomorrow I basically told him that wasn't happening. His story is that him and some buddies took classes and bought the cameras and then just decided they weren't that into it and he is tired of them sitting around.

Little worried about the source of the unit to be honest. How do you check if the unit is stolen is my main concern.

the guy knew about drum hours and fan hours... but was kinda vague as to his projects and where he had used the camera etc.

any thoughts as to whether I should pursue this

I know that people (regardless of occupation) have preferred tools for various reasons, whether it's familiarity, sentimentality or whatever. In the most recent issue of VM, there's a review of the new Avid. Living within walking distance of WB, Disney, Nickelodeon, etc, I'm fully aware of Avid's position in the industry. However, I'm wondering why it holds such prominence in the industry compared to Premiere or other NLE's. I'm well aware of its dominance early on, but why do Avid users contiunue to say it's so far ahead of Premiere? At home, I have a version of Premiere from a long time ago (I've mainly concentrated on web design for the past 10 years), but now I'm editing video at work and am using CS3 and the difference is night and day.

The reason I ask is for my home system. When I upgrade my system at home, I might get Avid, but is the difference in the software great enough to justify paying for a new version of Avid that would be twice as much as an upgrade to Production Premium CS4? Also, I look at what happened with QuarkXPress. It was the industry standard in print because there was no alternative that could touch it. However, InDesign came along and now people are jumping to ID (and there are several Quark-hating blogs out there) and leaving Quark behind. If Avid is better, why is it so much better? What can it do that Premiere can't?
