Thanks Mr. Shultz. The writer, Adam Winston, has some great ideas for the rest of this story. Hope he shares them with the world one day.

My good friend and fellow producer from my music video, Raymond Vargas, came to work on this project because, first I needed him, but then became in love with the story because of the choices and decisions that kids/young people make at this point in their lives. He sees this movie as a great vehicle for anti-bullying campaigns.

That was GOOD! I see you had a fairly large gang working with you - well done! OK, tech talk time!

Was it done on a 5D? What cameras?

Where did you get that fantastic sound track. It fit in so incredibly well. You do that from scratch or get audio tracks from somewhere?

How did you capture the audio? Did you use sound effects, foley or was this all recorded on set?

Did you use dollies, sliders, steadicams or what?

Once again, most impressive!

Very well done. Quite watchable, good character development in the story an shot in a manner with no tech glitches that distract the viewer. Post was very good. Looks like you did some color finishing that 'warmed' up the overall look. My only suggestion is some tighter editing in spots that make the film 'drag' when you've got good momentum going. Again, very well done. Now go make another....

Outsourcing comes into play as a viable option when your incoming workload outweighs your output capacity. Only large studios and production houses find benefits in outsourcing. When your outfit is small, like Grinner mentioned it is much more profitable to do the work in-house and not parse potential profits with other businesses. If that's the case, it would be a lot cheaper to contract individual editors and pay them a one-time fee. But again, that's not necessary if you're managing your incoming workload.

Nice try at pitching for business though. Next time, do your research. Most of the Demographic for VMM are amateur hobbyists to single-owner production specialists. It is unlikely that you would find anyone here who was ready, willing or able to ship their post-production workload off-shore to India or anywhere else.

I can only speak to the IT aspect of off-shoring with expertise, but I would not think video production would be much different.

Outsourcing to India is not the most cost effective option any longer.

1) There are enormous overheads since most projects need full time project management dedicated to the project plus large chunks of phone time.

2) Many projects have to be done over, some multiple times due to barely qualified staff (the cheapest that can be found).

3) Language is often an issue - I'm sure we've all seen the ad where "Peggy" is talking.

4) Other third world countries are undercutting India and even India is off-shoring some of their work.

5) The quality of what I've seen coming back is mixed - sometimes it's stellar, others it's absolute garbage.

These have been my experience - I would think an intern from a film school for about $10/hour would give you better results but I personally don't outsource and see no reason to start.

I have seen a site like this - they spam my email all the time trying to get me to use their services as it will "save me time". For just weddings I don't think it is worth it - but if you had a ton of camera work, it might be worth it. On the other hand, how does your client feel about you sending off their footage to another unknown person?

Hi all,

I am Raj from India.

most of the wedding videography companies are small scale, generally owned by single person, of course there are a few exceptions.

Its is waste of time to edit and finalize all footage by yourself.

I currently handle editing part of wedding videos of some of my friends ( they became my friends after we started working together ) from Canada and UK.

It helps them to get rid of headache of post and can concentrate more on getting more contracts or marketing.

As editing costs less in India than any other country, it saves money and time too.

All the guys have given you great tips of how to do it in post. One thing to keep in mind when shooting color-for-b&w video is to keep in mind your exposure, contrast and the colors of your talent's clothing during the shoot. Remember, all colors will turn to shades of black, white and gray when you convert the footage over to B&W. Blues and browns will turn black or to darker grays, Red and Green will turn to medium gray while Orange will turn to light gray. Pink, yellow or any pastel color will turn to white. You also want to substitute Dark blue or brown for black and yellow, pink or pastel colors for white. Black and white fabrics are a 'female dog' to get proper exposure on which will translate well in B&W.

You'll end up washing out your talent's skin-shading and if you have dark or pale talent then there's that whole exposure nightmare to deal with. Lighting will be your saving grace to help separate your subjects from the background. If you're shooting outdoors, use reflectors if you don't have outdoor lighting available. If you're shooting interiors, use dedicated video lights with minimal diffusion. If you've ever seen any of those B&W films from the '40's, '50's and '60's the light is always harsh. That's necessary to create a sense of depth in the scene.

Here's a link that gives an example of how colors will translate to B&W.

Shooting for B&W

Grinner is right - All NLE's have a color correction (or other) FX that allow you to bring the saturation to 0 - This will make your footage B&W. In Sony Veags' version you can have varying degrees (from 0 to 3.0) which will have different effects on the video.

Sony Vegas has a couple of other FX that you can use:

1) Black & White - Just what it says - Blend amount of 1.0 will make it B&W, but you can adjust the slider to varying degrees of B&W (0 - Full color, 1 - B&W).

2) HSL Adjust - Change the saturation to 0.

3) Film Effects - Convert to B&W by checking the "Convert to greyscale" checkbox; add grain and/or tint by using the sliders labeled as such; add particles (dust, flicker, hair, jitter, scratches) by selecting them from the combo box and adjusting the slider to change amount to suit. Add multiple FX for multiple particle types.

all NLEs will. I tell my little trick though. While there are plugins galore for film scratches, ect., I kept an old beta from back in my linear days with reel film sctatches, grain, firt, and leader. I luma key it over footage when I wanna trash it up as it's much more organic. I can literally tell you what plugin was used for fake film trash from the back of the room it's become so recognizable.

I am interested in taking some of the video I have and making it look like old B&W film. I was wondering if any of the less expensive editing programs have the ability to make this type of conversion. I am interested in the Adobe Premier 6 but wasn't able to find if it did that.

I'd like to be able to take it to B&W,

maybe add some scratches, dirt & hair effect

and possibly change the speed so it looks like undercranked silents or like old newsreels.

I have a simple Hitachi DZ-GX5020A video camera that makes mini-dvds

I am hoping that at some point I'll be able to afford a new computer.

Yes, just edit your projects in HD and then cut out an uncompressed digital print that contains all your effects and color correction, titles and what not as the finished product. Use that as your master copy to make your SD version and later on if needed a Blu-Ray version. View it in HD while you're editing on your HD monitor. When you res it down to SD, view that version on an SD capable monitor to make sure you're good to go. Long as you set up the original template correctly for HD you will be fine for everything else.

It has been a long time...I remember you helping me out almost a year ago...many thanks.

Finally finished shooting...300+ GB of footage. Will make 25 completed DVDs when finished with post-production...finally am getting to editing now...just wanted to clear some things up before spending a lot of time doing it as I don't want to have to undo anything later.

Is it safe to say then that I should just set up my template in Vegas as HD, do my editing as such, outputting via HDMI or DVI to my 1920 x 1080 LCD, and then just render as MPEG-2 for DVD output or HD for Blu-Ray of my choosing? -or will that cause problems when my template doesn't match the output/render as settings?

Logically, I would think it wouldn't matter as the project file within Vegas should be the same regardless, and that only it's output format would change when rendering...

Want to make sure it's done right though...

Specwar,

Do your edit in the native footage (i.e. HD.) Make an HD digital print (the entire project burnt out to an uncompressed AVI or Quicktime movie. Take that DP and then transfer it into an SD 16x9 version for DVD. When you're ready to author you'll have the HD version to use.

If you can set up your monitor via HDMI, that should be your first choice. If you have a RGB RCA cable to hook up to an HD TV or monitor if you don't have HDMI. You need to view the HD footage on an HD capable monitor preferably in the native resolution (720p or 1080i/p.) When you want to see it in SD then use the SD version you made and reset your monitor for SD (720 x 480) to see it properly in that format.

But definitely do your HD cut first with any transitions and color-correction/grading in the native format before making an SD version.

So here goes...

I shot an immense amount of footage in AVCHD from a Canon prosumer Vixia. Have 1920 x 1080 .MTS files that now need editing.

Here is the deal though...

I originally shot it in HD, need to first release it in SD due to media prices, but then want the option to release it in HD later when blu-ray discs go down in price. Need to know how to set-up the templates properly in Sony Vegas Pro as well as monitors for editing. A bit confusing for me since I shot in HD, need to edit it but then output to SD, but then need to output in future to HD.

My questions are as follows:

1.

How should I set-up the Sony Vegas Pro template for my project and for color correction? Should I set it up as 1920 x 1080i HD even though it is going out first to standard definition 720 x 480? Or should I set up the template as 720 x 480 standard NTSC? How will the final decision affect future desires to output to Blu-ray as high definition?

2.

How should I set up the monitors for color correction? Should I set up a CRT via firewire so that I can see what it looks like on a standard definition CRT? Or should I output to a 1920 x 1080 LCD computer monitor? Or both? Will color correcting in one format (HD) make it look funky in another format (SD) and vice-versa?

What to recommend since I originally shot it in HD, need to first release it in SD, but then want the option to release it in HD later?

Many thanks for the help; in the gurus I trust!

D0n,

Yes this technology is definitely out of the bottle but I don't think it will run 35mm and RED shooters off permanently. There are still plenty of name brand pros out there turning out great product and while there is still demand for their skills with the existing tech they'll be around for a while.

The thing that makes the DSLR's so interesting is what you see now is nowhere near what their ultimate form will be. Both photog's and filmmakers are getting the 'kinks' worked out with the production and post workflow issues using these rigs. For filmmakers to get the real bennie's you'll have to get secondary gear like external mics/recorders, mattebox rigs, viewfinders and portable monitors. Cool thing is though that is a chunk of change, it's not even close what it would cost to rig up a dedicated video cam with a similar setup and it's lighter.

Image wise the MkII has a bigger image working area than a Super 35. The 7D is the same size as a Super 35 and the MkIV is slightly bigger. The MkII is the equivalent of a 5k camera where the most commonly used RED's are 2 and 4k. The MkIV is the most expensive of the three but you could still buy two bodies, two good lenses and some support gear for what you would pay for just the body of one RED.

I'm not familiar with the Pentax line, but have used their medium format cameras and they were quite good. I'm sure just like Nikon and Sony, they've invested their extensive knowledge into their offerings. Personally, I would like to have the MkII but am on the fence between the 7D and the MkIV as they have a few more tech issues worked out.

I hear Indie Filmmakers gushing over the RED which is a phenomenal camera, but if you blow your budget on renting a rig that you could take the same money and get multiple DSLR's that can do the same job and go more places with it that just seems smarter. I'm done with that whole 'dump money on it' attitude of production. These new cameras are just the shape of things to come.

As a Pentax shooter, I'm also looking at the k-7 with it's weather proof design to add to my workflow.

The drawback right now for me, is the pending release of the Pentax 645-d if that camera shoots video, with it's larger than any ff 35mm sensor, I'd say it could give RED a run for the money at a fraction of the cost..

So I wait for a new product announcement before buying...
