I forgot, when posting last, to mention my 'fall-back' graphic, if I am unable to secure the results I want with the methods I have already described. I frequently carry a Garmin 'Oregon 450' GPS with me, especially following an unfortunate event where I failed to return home by nightfall after day spent in thick 'bush', accidentally following an illegally-marked trail, and had my old GPS quit on me due to impenetrable bush-cover overhead. My night-out in the open bush, waiting for sunshine the following day, (which enabled me to navigate my way out using my wrist-watch and the sun's position), had out, searching for me, 50 Search-and-Rescue personnel, the police, a helicopter and two boats out-at-sea; something of which, to this day, I do not care to be reminded, particularly. The problem had been that of getting a message 'out', as, in the area, cellphone coverage was zilch, and I don't carry one anyway. It's no big dea; I have had nights out in the bush before, but, of course, that was before I was married and had a family at home to report that I was overdue. I was in no danger, (we have no snakes, nor bears, only possums, deer and pigs), and the only respect which gave any cause for concern, was that during the day, which had been stinking-hot, I had gulped down two-thirds of my single bottle of water.

However, I have created a handy little 'mask' consisting of a graphic of my GPS, physical, which I have also reproduced, rotated 90 deg to the left, and also to the right for those instances where I am moving, effectively across the screen, rather than up-and-down, (when I use the normal, unrotated view).

Now, the screen of the GPS, in the graphic, has been replaced by an area of 'green-screen'. I also have the map in my computer appropriate to the area I am travelling-in. The nature of the actual GPS display makes it useless for reproduction as a means of showing routes travelled on video, but small areas, copied off the map are ideal and quite visible, even though the GPS and its window only occupies a corner on the lower left-hand side of the screen. It is easy, to animate a travelling line over part of the map in the GPS's 'window' to give an indication of where I am at any one time, (the marked-route must, of course be absent from the portion of the map, in-use, as you have to animate, frame-by-frame, a 'new' line onto it). Magnified, somewhat, the screen image on a GPS seems to be somewhat pixellated, at any time, and then, it is quite in-order to use a line which pixellates naturally, as that falls into-line with the rest of the image. Simple, and works extremely well. Only disadvantage is, that it is a bit small.

Just a footnote. I have doubled the green-screen image size to 3840 x 2160 and reduced the image-size again, from there, when it has become necessary, It had made some improvement (and I have used that method, often, when creating 'chroma-based' screen-objects which were static, and only called for a single frame of information), but the files-sizes are, of course, horrendous.

I am currently putting together a video segment of an afternoon's walk of several kilometres (or 'miles', if that's what you 'do' in your neck-of-the-woods). Each portion of the overall sequence of about twelve minutes duration, is introduced by a widish-angle 'panoramic' shot taken from a tripod, which shows the track to be traversed, clearly. The intention, (and it's well on the way to fulfilment, since everything 'works'), is to animate an ever-extending white-line from end to end of the walked-over landscape-shot in full-screen, indicating progress and at any one time, and, optionally, to run the corresponding video shots in a reduced-size window. The technology is perfected, and the line travels, ever-extending as the corresponding, directly-obtained shots keep pace in the smaller 'window'. Being able to run the smaller window allows me to intermix 1920 x 1080 and 720 x 576 shots without the latter appearing to be at a disadvantage. The whole effect is created by laying-out on a photograph, the same size as the finished images, the line to be traversed in 'chroma'-compatible green, which has been lightened slightly in tone, so as to be 'visible' against the true 'chroma' green of the typical green-screen process. Both greens have been selected so as to 'disappear' when the 'chroma' function is invoked. That is then selected, and 'lifted' by means of 'copy', and plonked onto a blank 'green-screen' of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It's merely then, a matter of tracing the final 'white-line', frame by frame onto the green blank, using the 'pilot' slightly-lighter line as a guide and extending the line in even steps. It works brilliantly, but for one thing. My beautiful crisp tidy 'lines' once saved as 'frames' (one to each 'step') and brought back to the screen again, at rendering-time, have pixellated badly at the edges and no-longer stand-out against the background as they were first drawn. On projection, the lovely crisp and accurate line has gone muddy, due to the numbers of pixel which are now, neither green, nor white, but somewhere in-between, and with a line only four pixels wide, that means, effectively, the entire line.

My question, then, is this: Is it possible to save this material as a series of 'unmerged' images so that the outlines remain crisp, clear and well-defined? Has anyone 'out-there' had to overcome this problem and is able to point me in the right direction? All suggestions welcome.

Hi again,

Pinnacle Studio 14 or 15 is a good starter solution, a step over this is Avid Studio. If you want to start using low budget go to Home Hardware and buy Philipps Swirl lamp (Bright light) is 5000K lamp, buy from store a medium green cloth (Green color like CMYK 60-0-70-20) or Pantone DS 284-3C and you are in business. Also you can use common neon (Day Light) but don't mix light source.

I use Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate to my Green screen shooting, it has a easy to work with green screen package. There are a ton of videos on Youtube on how to green screen, cheap and easy if you want. Between this site and Youtube, you should be able to green screen any video you want, very easily.

Hi,

Low price software have about same technology and naturally offer same performance. With low price product the background represent one surface and must be lighted more uniformely, and the background must be smooth as possible. Talent about 6 feet in front and camera about 6 to 9 feet in front of talent that means you need a room with a minimum of 12 feet x 17 feet long (24 better) at least 4 black box, 2 to light the green screen and 2 for the talent + a small lamp to light the should in the back. If you light using a good setup any software can fit your work. That means with the eye dropper you pickup the green color and with the other button you adjust the pixel range value that all pixel inside this range becomes transparent. With time you learn and you need to buy all you need starting from a good software and light boxes, good green screen background etc...

You can start easily without to invest too much.

Regards,

Hi folks,
I have been researching info on videography and chroma-keying for the past few days. I am wanting to do some videos (instructional and others) with virtual studios. I have downloaded a few demos of software but thought I would just ask...

What is the best keying software that is both economical (say, around $100 or less if possible) and provides an easy to use keying and editing interface? I want easy, but I also want to appear quality without having to pay significantly for it. I do have Adobe After Effects 5.0 but it is kind of old (around 10 years old I think??) and I haven't been able to get anything to work with it.

Thanks
Damion

BRoach,

Paint a wall with bright green paint. I did this at my friends house and it works great. If you don't feel confortable painting your wall, or want something less permanent, go to Walmart or some other store like it and buy some bright green poster paper. These things are about 3'x3' and cost around .67 cents per sheet depending where you buy them. Just make sure they're all the same shade. Then, tape them together with clear packing tape. Hold it up on a wall so that the tape is on the back, and put a piece of tape in each corner. Get a friend to help you. You can also put some on the ground, too. Or you could even build a stand for it out of 2x4s and attach it to that. Or you could paint the projector screen, but i don't know how that would turn out.

"I had been looking at an 8x10 size because I had read that that's the
minimum for full body shots - but I wondered if a 5 x 7 would be
sufficient for waist-up shots? if so - that impact collapsible looks
promising...but again, I'm not really sure the best/inexpensive way to
hang these up. I would be transporting it each time I used it."

BRoach,

I use the 5'x7' collapsible when I don't need full body shots. Believe it or not 5 feet x 7 feet is a lot bigger than you think. The collapsible has a heavy wire frame so you can lean it up against the wall if you don't get the kit with the stand. If you use the single stand that comes with the kit, you'll need a counterweight to balance out the cross bar (I use a simple 5lb leg weight and a sand bag to hold the base of the stand steady.) If you get the collapsible, don't lose the folding instructions! Folding it improperly could cause the frame to have a stress failure and that wire unbound can be dangerous. Not to mention the collapsible comes in a handy carrying bag and if you don't fold it properly, it won't fit in the bag!

As for keying in AFX, the standard keying tools leave a lot to be desired. However, there is a keying plug-in called 'Keylight' that is pretty dang handy. Thing is if you don't have CS5 or later, you'll need to update Keylight to the very latest driver or else if you're using Vista or Win7, it will crash your system. It's purely a driver issue and the folks at the Foundry are real helpful and will point you to the proper way to reinstall the plug-in. Now, you have to have a legit copy of CS3 or later to get Keylight as part of AFX. Keylight comes with an easy to follow pdf Manual and unless you're trying to fix the most horrific key ever, keying with it is very little sweat.

The main thing you need to know about keying is not in post, but in production. When you're using your greenscreen, light that mutha up! Even lighting with all the same brightness and color temperature lights will make your life in post so much easier. As for tutorials, there's a whole bunch of them here on the VM site for free.

i recently posted a video and got some great suggestions on how to improve, one was to shoot in front of a green screen so that the background would be more professional/interesting. i have a small budget....I would only feel comfortable spending $150 at the max - and would prefer to stay within the $50 - $100 range. But I've learned quickly what the regulars on here have repeatedly said....you get what you pay for. I am looking for an adequate green screen that I would be able to work with - i've looked at the foam backed from eefx.com and saw they have an 8x10 for about $110. I just dont know how to hang it up without buying all the extra stuff - the grommets, or rod hem..... is it not possible to hang these on any wall w/o those 'extras'?

I also looked at tubetape - but it seems the last commenter on green screens was not happy with the quality.

I've also looked at amazon and saw cowboy studio, britek, and estudio all make muslin sheets affordable - some come with the stands and lights , and some just have the 'sheet' - which i'm not sure how to hang...also, the price is cheap - which is great for my budget but makes me wonder if they would key well.

I've also looked at bhphoto - they have options of just the sheet, or the impact collapsible 5 x 7, or a $150 8x 10 muslin sheet with stand.

I had been looking at an 8x10 size because I had read that that's the minimum for full body shots - but I wondered if a 5 x 7 would be sufficient for waist-up shots? if so - that impact collapsible looks promising...but again, I'm not really sure the best/inexpensive way to hang these up. I would be transporting it each time I used it.

Any advice on which route you would take as someone who's never used one before and doesn't feel comfortable shelling out too much money?

Also - I have a large, roll down projector screen that I never use, I don't know if it is possible to rig up a chromakey green sheet so that I can attach it to the screen. The projector screen is relatively easy to hang up, and it seems like itd be easy to transport and store wrinkle free....just throwing that out there in case someone has done it before.

Wow, Ken approach is pretty good. This will be a fun experiment to try and it will be great for conferences of broadcast meteorology. This approach will be excellent for teaching some basic of broadcast meteorology to elementary school children that have never been in front of a camera. Thanks Ken, I will sure have fun doing this in future conferences. Now Lindsey, I do weather forecast and to make the effect of writing or moving some clouds you need to make the animation in another program (such as Adobe After Effect) and then put it as part of the image that will be on the greenscreen. The talent must know exactly where the animations or moving images will be in the map. You can also make many different images and in each one include something new but in a different position so it appears that its moving. The talent will need a remote control so he could change the image when he feels like it. And with a little bit of acting from the talent you can pull this effect successfully. This takes practices but it sure works well. I had not include this feature in our current forecast because we don't have a monitor and I'm using Adobe Visual Communicator to make the forecast and the talent can barely see what they are doing. But as soon as I get a monitor I will tell them to start making the animated clouds, writings, etc. You can see my forecast at http://www.juracantv.webs.com

lindsey,

OK, taking a VERY low-budget approach to this.....

No video mixer.

1st, feed the map image into the monitor, and use small pieces of post-it notes to mark where the important map parts are on the face of the monitor.

2nd, now hook up the monitor to the camera aiming at the client (standing in front of a green screen). The client will see himself in the monitor, as well as marks indicating where the "writings" will go.

3rd, the client just points to the spots, rather than "writing" on them. In post production, you make the writings appear as he points to the spots.

I think that would be the easiest and cleanest way to handle it.

Good luck!

Ken

P.S. -- If you're using an LCD screen (instead of a glass picture tube), you might try removing most of the stickiness from the post-it notes. (Repeatedly sticking and removing the notes from a paper surface should reduce the stickiness.) Or just put a clear sheet of glass or plastic in front of the monitor.

New at some of this so please bear with me.

I have a potential client that wants to produce a video seminar in which he is standing in front of a large map. The idea is to use a chroma key background, a video mixer and a monitor so he can see the map in relation to his position similar to a wetherman. The problem I need to solve is this: he writes on the map in his actual presentation and wants to be able to do something similar in the video.

Since this is a rather low budget project, I want to use a simple mixer like the Sima SFX10, one camera for the subject against a blue screen and one camera for the map. I will then output the composit to a monitor for the subject to look at and another output to a DVR. I cannot determine what I need to allow the subject to "write" on the map.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

not sure what you are seeing, it's possible you have the track compositing mode set improperly.  I am not aware of any "auto chromakey" in any Vegas platform.

I just got Vegas 9 PE for christmas, and have noticed a strage effect while working on my first project.  Every time I drag a clip with a green background onto the timeline, it seems to do an automatic, poor chromakey that makes the video dark an grainy.  When I add the chromakey effect and adjust it, I can get the video to look fine.  Is this "auto-chromakey" normal?  Is there any way to turn it off?

A little off topic here, but on the Digital Juice forums, there has been an award winning NASCAR videographer/producer for several years.

His name is Bill Channell (http://www.racevideo.com) and while he is taking a break from the forums now (he just retired) would, I'm pretty sure, be more than helpful for you in your endeavors in this genre.

I've seen his video work and it is outstanding!

All you are doing in chromakeying is overlaying an image or video on a mask that is set to a color value.  just because you zoom in and the area of the color key changes, the image or video that you overlay does not zoom with the camera changes.  you would have to make adjustments to the input images or video to correspond with the camera changes.

That's exactally what I want to do. Obviously if you zoom in on talent, the chromakeyed background gets larger too. Is there an economical way to track that so they work simultaneously?

I am not sure I understand your question. Are you asking for a way of having the pan/zoom that you do on your talent match the pan/zoom in your background plate?

We produce a weekly tv show about NASCAR Racing. We are currently using a green screen behind our talent, which works well, but we'd like to

be able to incorporate camera pans and zooms. Does anyone know of a way to do this without breaking the bank?

Well, didn't work.  I applied the chromakey to the timeline, made my adjustment and exported to Flash using the Media encoder. The movie still has the background.  It's black but It's still the screen. I made sure the Alpha channel was selected but no luck.

I have a client that I shot in front of a green screen who wants that image in a Flash video with a transparent background. Uncompressed does yeild a large file and it takes a bit to render in Premiere Pro 2. I did not try to export to Flash because I didn't think it would work with the black background. I'll try that. No special way to export to Flash? Any hint as to why the audio skips and pops? The original was a hardwire lav mic that sound very good. Thanks for responding.
