Hi to the folks out there,

I've recently bought a HP Pro book 6560b primarily as it still has a
firewire port so I can still transfer video from my Legria HV40. I have
installed Premiere 5.5. but when I try to capture the video I get jerky
pictures with a frame or so 'sticking'. This seems to happen in
conjunction with a sound like a burrrp/buzz. This noise is very evident
when playing a Youtube video and am wondering whether it's interfering
with something else/program I'm not aware of?

I have changed the firewire driver to the 'OHCI compliant host
controller (Legacy) as suggested on another site, rolled back the audio
driver 'IDT high definition codec' to a previous version all to no
avail.

I've used HDVsplit to transfer the video and it still happens though not
as badly as with Premiere, which makes me think it's something else on
the laptop?

I'm sure it's NOT my camera as I can capture video to my desktop that
runs XP. In anticipation of the next question "why don't I capture using
my desktop PC and then transfer the footage to my laptop?" Answer -
It's at home and I work abroad hence I have the laptop to save space.

The video runs smooth as silk via the camera viewfinder. Any ideas, suggestions, solutions will be most gratefully received.

I'm running windows 7 professional, 64bit with SP1 on a HP Probook
6560b, Intel (R) Core TM i5 2410M CPU@2.30GHz 2.3GHz with 4gigs of RAM.

Thanks in anticipation

Greetings!
I have a Sony HDR-FX7 HD camera, and I want to capture the HD material I have shot
into Adobe Premiere CS5.
The problem is that my HP laptop (Pavilion DV6 core i7) does not have a firewire input! only 2 USB 3.0 ports and 2 USB 2.0 !
I've even purchased a firewire to USB 2.0 cable but my laptop fails to install the drives.
Is there any way I can connect my camera to my laptop, so I can capture my material?

Hi,

I have a 7 year old GL-2 that can no longer capture. The LCD and the eye piece looks like a green to magenta gradient. When I press record the magenta and green gradient is recorded. When I put in a pre-recorded tape it looks completely normal.

If anyone has any ideas on what's wrong, or how I can fix it, if it can be fixed, please respond.

Hi all, I am trying to capture video from a Sony miniDV camcorder using Nero 10 and firewire. I can see the device on screen and a scrambled version of the capture. It looks as though the pixels are all there, but very scrambled up and some of the bottom of the image is being shown at the top. Audio is ok. Can anyone advise what is happening and how to fix it? Windows movie maker gives the same result. Computer system is Win7 core i5 firewire. Thanks!

I record sports for a small college teams using my own Canon GL2. The color and sound are great and the production timeline has been manageable. I'd shoot a game on tape one evening, do a little editing overnight and deliver discs to coaches the next morning.

Because of changes in the conference, we'll need to produce discs for the opposing team right after the game. Consequently, we need to record directly to some type of device in real time. I've seen several concepts used at other schools...outputting the signal to a computer, recording to a DVD deck, etc. but am looking for the simplest, most cost-effective method.

Does anyone have a recommendation? Details are appreciated...

Incidentally, I still plan to record to tape as well, for archival purposes...I'll use that copy to create highlight reels!

Hi,

I am new to the forum and new to video making. I have a Dazzle DVC 100 Capture card that I have successfully installed to my computer along with Pinnacle Studio 9.

Everything is okay until I am ready to record and click the capture tab. I then get the message: "Studio 9 QS cannot initialize the capture device. Please restart Windows and try again."

I have restarted but nothing change. I tried to install the 9.4.3 patch for studio 9 but it is now unavaiable as they want you to buy the newest software. My drivers are up to date for the capture card.

Any suggestions, please.

I love sound work almost as much as video. For some dumb reason Sound Design and Field Audio are always considered 'secondary' aspects of film and videomaking. Unless you plan on making a silent movie (good luck with that), you're going to have to pay attention to sound. Even at the highest ends of production you can still get bit in the backside by poor sound capture. Here is a video by Ben Slotover with some 'Tips for Good Sound'. Be advised, there is some salty language in spots so watch at your discretion.

Greetings everyone. This is going to be long but I have to explain it.

I am in the process of converting about 100 DVD's that were of family events, to AVI so I can edit them. These DVD's were converted from VHS tapes using a Sony dual deck system about 5 years ago. I also have about 30 Video8 analog tapes to convert to AVI.

I purchased 123DVDConverter from DVDVideoTool.com to convert the DVD's. My problem is that at some point on many, but not all DVD's, the converting results in pure static at some point during the process, usually near the end. The process continues to the end of the reading from the disk, then the conversion stops. If I play the disk with Windows Media Player, it plays to the end just fine. The conversion though, ends in static at some point. But it gets much worse.

I purchased the Canopus ADVC110 Video Converter along with Pinnacle 14 Ultimate and Adobe Premier Elements. I plug my Sony Video8 outputs into the ADVC110 and then a firewire to my computer. I start the conversion with either program, and all looks fine. However, at times, the digitized results turn into static, but if I look at the viewfinder of the camera, the playback is fine! This happened with the Pinnacle 510 converter as well!

I am stumped! Two different programs, two different media, two completely different processes, but the same frequent problem! The video output turns to static at some point during the process. My computer is a high end quad core, and the graphics card is an 8800 GTS. I try to convert a disk a second time, and the switch to static happens about at the same spot each time.

When I installed the 123DVDConverter on my 5 year old laptop, and try to convert the same DVD, it goes all the way though to the end without problems! Something must be wrong with my big computer? But what?

Any suggestions on what the hell is going on here? Much of the video is of me at the South Pole, Antarctica, when I wintered over in 85-86. This video stuff is addicting, and my wife says I need a hobby, but I cannot get past this intermittent problem. I have lost confidence that my conversions are complete. Thanks for any ideas!

I work in my high school auditorium, and part of my job is to produce, duplicate, and sell DVD's of most events we host. We have three cameras mounted on Eagle PTZ heads, and control them in the light booth with an eagle controller. From there the cameras are routed into our switcher/ production computer running NewTek VT5.

This is how we have been producing the DVD so far:

We record VT5's program output directly onto a DVD using an external DVD burner. When it is time to copy the disc we take it to another pc workstation that runs a robotic duplicator. This has worked okay so far, but over time the master DVD's wear out and start causing problems. Also, the time it takes the DVD drive to finalize, along with the time it takes the duplicator to create a temporary disk image file to copy from adds at least an extra half hour to our production process.

Here is what I would like to do:

I would like to take the output from the VT5 workstation (most likely Firewire,) and use the duplication pc to capture the feed live. Our shows usually run around two hours, so I would have to somehow compress the video file to fit it on a DVD. Then I need to create a disk image file that the duplication software can work with. By doing this, all I would have to do to make a copy is tell the duplication software to read the disk image, rather than search through the binder for the master DVD.

What I need help with:

I'm looking for any suggestions regarding the best/fastest software that can capture and compress the video, as well as create a disk image. Is there such a program that can do all of that? Would I have to use multiple programs? Also what file formats would be the best to use throughout the whole process?

I am also hoping to archive a file that can easily be imported into an editing program, hopefully not too large a file, but still keeping decent quality.

Random Thoughts/Questions

Is a 6 pin Firewire cable fast enough to transfer the video?

Will a 15 foot Firewire cable affect the quality or speed of the transfer?

I will be using an external hard drive to store the video files and disk images. What kind of drive will perform best, considering the tight budget we are on?

I will most likely need to trim the video at the beginning to cut out any black space/ color bars. Will this software be able to do that, or will I have to use an editor?

Can I set the compressed file size so the entire DVD is used up, keeping the quality as high as possible?

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds. I know I'm asking a lot, so any ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Many times we want to capture just 10-15 seconds or just 3 minutos of a DVD. The typical option is to rip the WHOLE DVD which can have maybe 2 hours and with a "medium powered computer" will take a whole day to capture all this in AVI using Pinnacle Studio 12.1, just example.

Why should I capture the whole DVD when I just want to have one specific section (of 2 minutes for example) to insert on another production.

(Hey, notice that I UNDERSTAND the copyrights issues... but I am talking about a technical issue.)

I heard about programms/softwares which can capture only exctracts, sections of a DVD. But what if i try to do it like VHS capture? If I connect a "domestic" DVD player to a CONVERTER (like Canopus AVC) and from there to the PC via FireWire? With this I could make real time capture (in *AVI) and select only the sections I want.

Another thing regarding this: Video Quality. Will I see the good quality like when I rip it? Or the quality is supposed to decrease? What could happen? Or if decreased we will not notice the difference unless we have MAGNIFIC eyes?

It can see the camcorder, it will start playing the tape but nothing shows in the capture window and it will run from 7-10 seconds and then it will crash PPro.

I have checked around the web for possible solutions. One was to remove webcam software, which I did (it was Logitech Webcam software). No change. I have tested the camera in other programs, Windows Movie Maker (could capture fine) and Sony Vegas 6.0d (could capture fine). I have adjusted various settings recommended by the Adobe forums but the result is the same, crash. I have reinstalled PPro CS3, still the crash happens. I have used different rolls of footage, same result.

At first I thought the firewire port might be failing. But since I can capture from other programs I eliminated that idea. All of my software is up to date and I have reinstalled my video drivers. I don't know if Quicktime, IE8 or some other piece is used by PPro and that the newer versions may cause this problem. I feel strongly that it stems from a change in the registry but don't know where to start looking. Everything worked perfectly two months ago when I finished my last big project. Any help is greatly appreciated. If I don't find a solution soon, I am moving to a Mac.

Hi all,

I bouhgt a Blackmagic capture card after reading a review article in VideoMaker from Mr. Fulton in April 2009. I liked the fact that he concluded by saying "this could be the last capture card you'll ever need". So I bought the Intensity Pro.

What I didn't realize is that this card would obligate me to buy a whole brand new computer, wayyyyy more powerful than the current one, which I thought was very decent to work with HD. (to help out, this computer is not connected to Internet by any case, it's just dedicated to HD editing).

Now, I run the Disk Speed utility, and I'm wayyyy too slow for the standards of my Intensity Pro in reading and reading, writing HD uncompressed goes all the way up to 465G/hour!

I didn't realize those numbers were that high and would ask a lot to a system.

But I really really really like to use the HDMI input to capture my footage. Firewire gives me trouble on a regular basis (dropped frames, camcorder not recognized...)

My question is : Can I use the card to capture through HDMI and in a way, capture in compressed mode ?

If I'm asking the question here, it's because I didn't get any answer back from the BlackMagic support team.

Thank you for any input!

Jean

I have a Dell Studio 540 with Vista 64 bit and have not been able to capture HD video from my Canon HV10 to Roxio 2009. I have been told that capture is not compatable with 64 bit althouh once captured, processing is superior to 32 bit. I have searched in vain for a program that can be used to caprture and asked Roxio and Microsoft if there is a fix on the way but no satisfactory answer. I'm sure someone has the solution.

I have a canon HD Vixia HF10 and just bought Pinnacle studio plus edition 12. The problem is I cant get my recordings to show up when I click the capture button. I get an error message that says

Studio is unable to connect to your video device.

If you have a DV make sure its on VTR, VCR or play mode and is connected to Firewire or 1394 port on your computer.

Right now I am connected to the computer from the mini USB to USB on the computer and I am in the play mode on the Canon. Thats the way it worked when I was using the software that came with the Canon with no problems except the software was pretty awful.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Hello.

Does Sony Vegas support any uncompressed capture devices with Vegas 9.0? Matrox MX.O2, BMD, AJA, anyone? When I check them out, they all seem compatible with Premiere and FCP, but not Vegas.

I am selling my HDV cameras, because I want the full HD spec. However, it appears that uncompressed capture is much superior to compressed (post compression) capture. Apparently full AVCHD is better than HDV, but not all AVCHD cameras have the same bitrate. The following article shows how some AVCHD cameras have too low a bitrate, making the overall quality less than HDV.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=998

I am looking at Tom Skowronski's review of the Canon HF S10. Canon boasts 900 lines of resolution. That confuses me. Why are they boasting 900 lines of horizontal resolution when the spec is 1920 x 1080? Should they not be boasting of 1080 lines of resolution? Or what am I missing here?

To get around the overcompression of AVCHD, they have a sale on the P2-based Panasonic HPX170 this week, for $2,400.00.

http://rogerscamera.com/catalog/product_info.php?redirect&origin=http://www.google.com/search?q=ag-hpx170&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7ADBR_en&products_id=5541

If I sell all of my cameras, I think I could do that; but Sony does not support the P2 format because of competition with Panasonic. If you ask me, that is outrageous.

P2 cards are spendy, but one can hook up a Focus FS-100 DTE and have hours of uncompressed record time:

http://www.videoguys.com/Search/Search.aspx?Query=Focus+Enhancements+FS-100+Portable+DTE+Recorder

But once again, I cannot do that, because Sony does not support the P2. Boo. Hiss! It makes me want to convert to a different NLE (seriously).

My problem is that I am just starting to get a handle on Sony Vegas Pro. I have been learning, but I need to begin editing in earnest soon, and I will not have time to pick up Premiere/CS4 before I have to begin editing. However, I do not want to lose all of my resolution because of overcompression due to AVCHD. So what can I do? The Sony EX1 looks beautiful, but unless they have a similar sale, I cannot touch it right now.

Apparently one can purchase cards to support uncompressed footage, but they only work with Premiere and FCP. One cannot use P2 card media with Vegas Pro, and I cannot afford an EX1 right now.

Any of you pros out there have any ideas?

Thank you,

Norman

I've been shooting video with a Sony HVR-A1U for a website. I don't have the money to buy a deck for capturing to Final Cut and I could use a spare camera for catching B-roll. Is the HDR-HC9 compatible enough to do both of these jobs well? If not can anyone suggest an affordable alternative ($500-$900)?

Hi all, I recently bought a JVC GY-HD110u for my primary camera and already have a Canon HF10 AVCHD camera that will be used mostly for wide shots and b-roll. My question is: now that my main camera is running tape, I am considering selling the canon to buy maybe an hv30 or some other consumer grade HDV format camera so that I don't have to pull the monster JVC out every time I need to capture. Would this be a reasonable move or would I be better off keeping the HF10 and buying a MiniDV VCR that I can use for capture? I am usually a fan of multitaskers over one-trick ponies, but I really love the HF10 and I can't decide which would be the better move. Obviously the HV30 would be the cheaper option since I could probably find someone to trade with, and it wouldn't really cost me much out of pocket. Also would I have to get a VCR that is meant for HD tape or would any one work since it matters mostly what the image was recorded in and not transferred? I hope my questions aren't stupid sounding but I have very little experience with tape decks.

Thanks in advance and I hope I have made sense of my querry.

Hi,

I have several months reviewing this web site and find it great, I hadn't even had the need for creating a new topic, there is

always one for what I am trying to understand, thanks to all the experienced people that is willing to help rookies like me

thanks to all !.

Now, I bought a Sony Vaio VGN series and had "blue screen" issues when trying to capture video from my Canon Gl2

using Adobe Premier several times, I did a very extensive research and found that other people in the world has had this problem with this laptop.

I sold it very cheap because of this and I am now ready to by a new one and I like to hear from the experts what laptop

recommend me for this. My budget is 900 dlls and I have a Best Buy store very close to where I am.

I am starting a new tv show in my city (small show) and will edit my sketches myself, I am using the laptop for this, will

use Adobe premier and sometimes (If I learn fast) After Effects.

Please help, Mac is not an options because my wife does not like it (mmm to be honest)
