Might be the speed of your hard drive. R U using ONLY your internal, OS and programs hard drive to capture to? Is it slower than 7200 rpm? Do you have an external, Firewire, 7200 rpm HD you could utilize. Even though your laptop might be powerful enough for basic editing, your hard drive might be the choking point. There are other issues and I'm not at all familiar with your computer but it would seem that trying to use the same hard drive, especially with Premiere 5.5 still might be asking too much of the system in trying to ingest.

Hi to the folks out there,

I've recently bought a HP Pro book 6560b primarily as it still has a
firewire port so I can still transfer video from my Legria HV40. I have
installed Premiere 5.5. but when I try to capture the video I get jerky
pictures with a frame or so 'sticking'. This seems to happen in
conjunction with a sound like a burrrp/buzz. This noise is very evident
when playing a Youtube video and am wondering whether it's interfering
with something else/program I'm not aware of?

I have changed the firewire driver to the 'OHCI compliant host
controller (Legacy) as suggested on another site, rolled back the audio
driver 'IDT high definition codec' to a previous version all to no
avail.

I've used HDVsplit to transfer the video and it still happens though not
as badly as with Premiere, which makes me think it's something else on
the laptop?

I'm sure it's NOT my camera as I can capture video to my desktop that
runs XP. In anticipation of the next question "why don't I capture using
my desktop PC and then transfer the footage to my laptop?" Answer -
It's at home and I work abroad hence I have the laptop to save space.

The video runs smooth as silk via the camera viewfinder. Any ideas, suggestions, solutions will be most gratefully received.

I'm running windows 7 professional, 64bit with SP1 on a HP Probook
6560b, Intel (R) Core TM i5 2410M CPU@2.30GHz 2.3GHz with 4gigs of RAM.

Thanks in anticipation

Your right Leandro, is more convenient to buy a Blackmagic Intensity. The extra computer will be exclusively for capturing the footage, in your studio or home. In my case I have an old Pentium 4 Windows desktop computer just for capturing footage or for any Windows program (I'm a Mac user). I got it for free from a family member and use it on several occasions. I suggest to first look around if you can find an old computer with firewire for free or really cheap (from friends or family), if not you should get Blackmagic's Intensity. Everything in the video world is expensive, you need to consider the "guerrilla" solutions before investing your money. If it works, why not use it?

Thanks for the ideas and all the help guys.
But I don't get it. how can the old used pc laptop with a firewire port is a good investment?
I mean, why spend money to buy an extra laptop in the first place?
I find it way cheaper and more convenient just to pay for the Blackmagic.
plus it's easier to just carry one laptop and this small adaptor, instead of two laptops.
Just my opinion, if there is another reason that I didn't get please feel free to tell me.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it

Glad to be helpful (though keep in mind that the HDMI on your laptop is out only... it'd be great if there were an HDMI in option!). I third an older machine for capture, even an older, inexpensive duo or quad core would do the trick.

Blackmagic Intensity will work for what you want and for many other things in the future, so is a good investment. The idea cfxcorp mentioned about looking for a used computer with firewire is an excellent suggestion. Maybe if you ask around your family members or friends you can get one for free.

Looks like it will work, but do you have to transfer in normal playback speed since it will capture the stream from the HDMI port? Over time I think you will wish that you put the money toward the purchase of a new PC or notebook.

Have you considered buying a used notebook with a Firewire port and transfer to an attached external hard drive which can be easily connected to your editing PC?

The short answer is, no. There are cables that claim to do it, but they are a waste of money (the architecture is radically different between USB and FW). Maybe something like Blackmagic's Intensity Shuttle might work- does your camera have HDMI out? If so, you may be able to do HDMI through the Shuttle to USB 3.0 in... it might be worth talking with them to see.

Hi. Im a GL-2 newbie. I just picked one up for $500 and would like advice on where to go for good GL-2 gossip/communication/advice. I hope I'm here already.

Since it was used and it came with a Panasonic ME tape, I assume I should continue with the same brand and type (except all I can find are AME tapes...I hope that is okay).

I live in Corvallis, Oregon--far away from production companies that might actually give videography seminars--so, I'm looking for good online tutorials. Any suggestions?

Battery question--the one that came with the camera holds its charge for just a bit over an hour. I expect a good 2 hour battery to hold a charge for 1.5 (with display screen on). Are there recommended brands I ought to look for or just go for whatever fits the ol' vid-cam? (and, what brands should I stay away from) (can you say?)

I'm filming my first wedding tomorrow (11-11-11 at 11:00am). Wish me luck!

Hi all, I am trying to capture video from a Sony miniDV camcorder using Nero 10 and firewire. I can see the device on screen and a scrambled version of the capture. It looks as though the pixels are all there, but very scrambled up and some of the bottom of the image is being shown at the top. Audio is ok. Can anyone advise what is happening and how to fix it? Windows movie maker gives the same result. Computer system is Win7 core i5 firewire. Thanks!

"I'd like to set up my Sony laptop to act as a monitor while I am
shooting HD video. It doesn't necessarily need to *capture* the video,
but to display it...."

RF,

Without dedicated monitoring software or an onboard video card with an HDMI, S-Video an Express or PCMCIA card slot on your laptop you won't be able to monitor incoming video.

Dedicated software like Adobe's On-Location (PC/Mac) and Scopebox (Mac) are excellent choices. Unfortunately, On-Location (formerly DV-Rack) is bundled into CSx so you can't purchase it separately. Scopebox can be purchased, but only for mac laptops.

Canon, Sony give out software to do basic edits with their video and video capable cameras. The functionality for live monitoring is generally limited to capturing video. There are breakout sets which when connected via firewire or through an Express or PCMCIA slot with or w/o supplied software may allow you to live monitor as well depending on what you get.

If you dig around E-Bay or other places, you may be able to find an old copy of DV-Rack (SD or HD versions) prior to the Adobe takeover. On-Location or an old copy of DV-Rack are your best bets.

<span class="postbody">The game counsel is a good
place to start with. Some have audio and video outputs which makes
things easier and more choices on devices to hooh it up to.

Let's say you have these audio/video outputs.

Common Caputure devices, will have audio/video-INPUTS ( some also
S-video). Thier output may be USB (USB-2 recommended, fast data output,
up to 480Mbps)

The other common output is "fire-wire" (IEEE 1394). Normally when Fire
is mention thier referering to 1394a which has been around for quite a
few year ( 430Mbps, I think). Thier is "IEEE 1394b" which is really
fast , double the speed, nice to have but costs more and you can do ok
with . Regular Fire-wire or USB2 for feeding it to your
computer/lab-top.

Compusa ( Retail -store) has these devices.

Your lap-top speed (cpu) and memory size is important, you will see the
requirements on the video-caputure devices on the suggested system
specs.

Sorry, I guess that's an unclear sentence. I mean that transcoding to ProRes will reduce rendering time, and transcoding to ProRes, which means you will be working in a ProRes timeline, will keep your graphics looking nice. Working in an HDV timeline will subject your graphics to 4:2:0 chroma sampling.

"getting out of Long GOP compression and your graphics will render nicer too"

I don't think rendering from the GOP will reduce the graphics quality. Rendering from ProRes will give you a much smoother editing time, but won't increase your quality. If you have GOP, you have what you have.

Transcoding to ProRes won't increase your image quality since the image has already be subject to the in-camera compression, but it will hold up a bit better for color correction. It will also reduce rendering as well since you will be getting out of Long GOP compression and your graphics will render nicer too, assuming you will work in a ProRes timeline.

Be aware that when you're transcoding to ProRes during ingest through Firewire, the image in log and capture will appear to log behind the audio. This is normal and everything should still be in sync when you're done capturing.
